links and I so appreciate that - Thank you

I will say this - ADOBE SUPPORT SUCKS!!! and as much as I love FM, etc., all
of the techs (save one - the one who was helping right as I got
disconnected) were barely understandable and one was downright rude. And
after long, interminable holds, all they could do was parrot back my problem

NOT!!!

Now, after wasting damn near a whole day on this, I get to start all

another choice that was economically feasible for me at this point, I would
so go there but OLH like NOW was a must for several clients and WWP is not
feasible and RH8 was the version available for me now - I had no other older

And FWIW, if you google this problem, it's all over the boards - and the
problem starts for no apparently consistent reason.

Um, Tammy? Would a *free* copy of Mif2Go be economically feasible?
I can guarantee no waits on hold for support... ;-) Also there
are no license server issues; we use the Honor System instead.
It works for us, and doesn't cripple our customers. Ever.

Mif2Go doesn't do PDF, but there are plenty of non-Adobe apps
that do. We've heard good things about NitroPDF, for example:
  http://www.nitropdf.com/index.asp
Not free, the Pro version is $99. Also look at Tracker:
  http://www.docu-track.com/downloads/
We use their free viewer in preference to Adobe's. Not as much
of a memory hog.

Upgrades to Acrobat 8 not working

2009-11-11 Thread Brabson, Michelle
Framers,

When we install Acrobat on new or refurbished machines we do not have the
ability to install Acrobat 8.1 through 8.1.7 without serious ramifications to
Acrobat functionality. When this occurs, Acrobat does not allow us to enter
values on the Initial View window on the File > Properties menu in Acrobat. It
also does not allow us to save via the Advanced > PDF Optimizer window.

Note that we are able to install up to version 8.0 with these Acrobat functions
work properly, but we are concerned about the messages from Adobe describing
security issues that require the additional upgrades. Any help understanding
this problem would be appreciated.

Please copy us when you respond since I am on the Digest.

FrameMaker 7.2
Some versions have Acrobat 8.0 and
Some versions have Acrobat 8.1.7
Windows XP Version 2002 Professional Service Pack 3

RE: FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-11 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Art,
Why would moving the files eliminate the network delays?
The folder I placed the files on are on my C drive, but they are still
automatically backed up by the network - the other drive (with the longer name)
was also backed up automatically.

And, I always work with my book files open - I want to see what's happening,
and if I goof, this way I can just not save. Also, each time I made a change to
the book files (changed conditions or updated the book) I would save the files
at that step - perhaps this guzzled the precious free virtual memory.

Lastly, how would I know if my memories are marginal? I work on a laptop and
the IT people told me that I could not get more than 2G RAM on the laptop - I
would need to move to a PC.

Thanks,
Orly.

The other thing the move may have accomplished is eliminating any network
delays that could cause FM to time out waiting for the files to open

One other thing you may try is opening all files in the book before you do the
PDF, which should also eliminate any network issues.

The 2G RAM and kinda limited free space may be marginal if it's "an incredibly
large book" ... There's a lot of file swapping and temp file creation involved
in the process.

How much RAM and free disk space do you have? Creating the PDF eats up a lot
and can trigger a crash if it runs out.

Also, you don't mention how you're doing it -- printing to the PDF logical
printer or trying to use SaveAs... which I think isn't as good as printing to
the Acrobat printer.

Yes, the hotfix works and doesn't seem to break anything, so it certainly
wouldn't hurt to roll it on.

FM 7.2 and Windows 7 64-bit

Without testing it... the requirements were basically the same as for FM8,
so I'd expect it to run fine, provided you do the W7 compatibility dance and
dial it back to Windows XP 32 mode.

HUGE Problem with Adobe TCS2 and Distiller - Final Update

2009-11-11 Thread Spectrum Writing
Using TCS2 install disks, Adobe FM 9 and Robohelp will install BUT when I
try to find the Adobe PDF printer in FM it's not there and Adobe Acrobat
Extended Pro won't install at all and craps out the installation.

done with emails to the list.

I will figure out what to over the next few days and go from there.

Okay,

Status to date -

I have apparently removed now all folders/files related to TCS2 - Nothing
appears at all under the program files directory (long story there - but I
got them deleted) and nothing appears In Revos uninstaller and windows clean
install; HOWEVER, i thought I would play it safe and install FM 7.2 first as
I was successfully using this and creating PDFs before installing Adobe
TCS2, but when I install this, at the prompt to install distiller, I get the
message that setup has detected I have a more current version (Ha!) and
won't install distiller, so now I am hosed completely for FM 7.2. Where in
the hell do I go look now? I even went to the registry and couldn't find
entries to distiller, so. . .

TCS2 has managed to take me down all the way now - I can't even use FM 7.2
as distiller won't install.

Again, any and all advice is appreciated.

That part is SOP for most software uninstalls. If there are any locally
modified files -- e.g., settings/config files, user or system data of
any kind -- the uninstall program generally leaves those (and the
directory structure that contains them) behind. That way, you can
uninstall/reinstall without losing your settings, templates,
preferences, etc.

(Yeah, I know -- all that stuff is supposed to be somewhere in Documents
and Settings, not Program Files. But go uninstall any 5 or 6 randomly
selected applications, and I bet half of them will leave a Program Files
directory or three containing some kind of data.)

I'm guessing that if you explore the directories that remain, you'll see
that the application files (.exe, .dll, etc.) are gone and only data
files remain.

>From the rest of what you say, it sure sounds like there is a real
problem (not the least with Adobe support). But be aware that the mere
existence of those folders is probably not part of that problem.

If the Add or Remove Programs list doesn't include "Adobe Technical
Communication Suite 2," then presumably you've uninstalled the entire
suite. Explore the Program Files directories that remain and you should
be able to confirm that.

So it completed the FM and RH installs? At that point, go to Control
Panel > Add or Remove Programs and see if Adobe Technical Communication
Suite 2 is listed. If so, click Change/Remove to open the TCS 2
Installer (the one on your hard disk, not on the DVD).

Make a note of what the status of the products is -- which are shown as
installable and which are listed as reinstallable -- that information
may be useful to you or to support (I know, I'm an optimist) later.

Then, I'd suggest selecting all the products that can be installed or
reinstalled and trying to run this installer (not the one on the DVD).
If necessary, fire up Task Manager and end any processes that the
installer says are running, like RSO3Server.exe.

You do have admin rights, right?

Sorry, I can't think of anything else right now -- other than raising
more hell with Adobe support. Good luck!

FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

There's a lot of file swapping and temp file creation involved
in the process.

and is actually needed when I use a third party app on FM.

As for my computer's guts...
I have 1.99GB of RAM, running at 1.83 GHz

My C drive also has 20 GB of free space - don't know if that makes a difference.

**A very interesting point and solution**, ===my IT fellow suggested moving
my files to a folder directly under my C drive, so that Adobe doesn't have to

This seems to have solved the problem, at least for the day.

HUGE Problem with Adobe TCS2 and Distiller

2009-11-11 Thread Art Campbell
Sorry to lead with questions, but, assuming you haven't uninstalled:
* Are you fully patched for Acrobat and FM (a bunch of updates seem to have
just been released the last week or so)?
* Was the Adobe printer set as the system default?
* Given that it's a PDF problem... were you actually printing to the Adobe
PDF printer, or were you using SaveAs?

Have you run through the compatibility trouble shooter in W7?

Did the system ever work properly? Maybe with a different set of job
options?

If it was me, I probably wouldn't uninstall Adobe Tech Support is
supposed to provide free help for installation issues.

Do you have another system you can fall back on? I'm running pretty much
problem free on W7, but I have two 32-bit installs.

HUGE Problem with Adobe TCS2 and Distiller

2009-11-11 Thread Spectrum Writing

Windows XP Version 2002 Professional Service Pack 3

files remain.

problem (not the least with Adobe support).

RH8

Good luck!

Without testing it... the requirements were basically the same as for FM8,
so I'd expect it to run fine, provided you do the W7 compatibility dance and
dial it back to Windows XP 32 mode.

HUGE Problem with Adobe TCS2 and Distiller

2009-11-11 Thread Spectrum Writing
All,

Summary of issues;

1.) When I tried to create a PDF using Adobe FM 9 and Adobe Acrobat Pro
Extended 9, here is the message that got immediately in Distiller:

Adobe PostScript software version: 3018.101

Adobe PDF Settings file read error in PDFX4 2008.joboptions:

/CheckCompliance out of range

After trying every known resolution to solve this (it locked my system so
badly that I had to do a reboot), I took the advice from Adobe's KB and
attempted to run the uninstall/reinstall features using my TCS2 installation
disk, uninstall through control panel, and a Windows uninstaller, here is
what I have encountered:

the program folders for Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 C:\Program Files
(x86)\Adobe\Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2\Adobe Acrobat) will not
delete - under no circumstances can I get these deleted -

1.) when I say uninstall Adobe Acrobat pro 9 using TCS2 uninstall, it says
that Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 is NOT installed on my system.

2.) when I go to the control panel, nothing is showing for TCS2 or Adobe
Acrobat Pro 9

3.) when I open Windows Install clean and even Revo uninstaller, NOTHING
shows for adobe Acrobat Pro 9.

so, when I try to install using my TCS2 installation disks, FM9 and RH8
install, then the system craps out on Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended and I can't
get past this and as result, I can't install Captivate and Photoshop.

when I try to manually delete these folders C:\Program Files
(x86)\Adobe\Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2\Adobe Acrobat these are
the messages that I get:

You require permission from SYSTEM to make changes to this folder

or

The action cannot be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in
another program and I have absolutely NOTHING else open.

I called Adobe support and quite frankly, it was useless. The tech. that did
answer the phone could only parrot back my problem and offer no help and she
took my information and said that I would get a call back within 24-48 hours
and that DOES ME NO GOOD as I have client deadlines or I could pay through
the nose and get immediate support.

WITF should I pay for this? I can't even go there right now.

any and all advice is appreciated.

Re: HUGE Problem with Adobe TCS2 and Distiller

Have you tried ending those processes in Task Manager's Processes tab?

FWIW, I just shut down Acrobat, and in Task Manager, I see
RSo3Middletierservice.exe and RSO3Server.exe (which sounds related)
listed as running processes, but not MiddleTierservice.exe.

IMO, Adobe has a long history of handling installs, upgrades, and
uninstalls poorly, and I'm sorry to learn that that's still the case. My

FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-11 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Art,
I print directly to the postscript printer called "Adobe PDF" which I think is
supplied with FM. I do not use the SAVE AS feature, just from habit (using FM
from version 5) although I understand that the feature currently works in FM8
and is actually needed when I use a third party app on FM.

As for my computer's guts...
I have 1.99GB of RAM, running at 1.83 GHz

My C drive also has 20 GB of free space - don't know if that makes a difference.

**A very interesting point and solution**, ===my IT fellow suggested moving
my files to a folder directly under my C drive, so that Adobe doesn't have to
deal with long folder names under a number of other folders.
This seems to have solved the problem, at least for the day.

Thanks for all your help!!

My
sympathies.

HUGE Problem with Adobe TCS2 and Distiller

2009-11-11 Thread Spectrum Writing
all,

I have Adobe TCS installed on Win7, 64-bit system. When I try to print to a
single file or a book to a postscript file with Adobe Acrobat distiller
open, I get this message inside of distiller:

Adobe PostScript software version: 3018.101

Adobe PDF Settings file read error in PDFX4 2008.joboptions:

/CheckCompliance out of range

And FM locks on me and that's the end of the story. After many attempts to
correct this, I simply gave up and decided to uninstall/reinstall FM 9.0
thinking that would solve the issue. When I put in disk1 of my TCS2 install
disk, and request to uninstall (NOT reinstall/uninstall) Adobe FM 9 and
Adobe Acrobat Extended Pro, I can only uninstall FM 9.0! when I try to
simply uninstall and reinstall Adobe Acrobat Extended Pro 9, I get this
message:

RSo3Middletierservice. exe and MiddleTierservice.exe are running and it
WON'T let me uninstall anything else. WTF? I have absolutely NOTHING else
open during the uninstall - I have closed everything including outlook,
snagit, etc. and for the life of me, I can't uninstall.

I finally gave that up and went to a RevoUninstaller and even that won't
uninstall the rest of TCS2. I get the same message about the .exe files
being open.

I am LOCKED in uninstall hell with TCS2 and I need to be able to clean my
system and do a clean reinstall.

This TCS has been the biggest clusterf--k since day one and I am absolutely
frozen to be able to work.

Help!!

FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-11 Thread Art Campbell
The other thing the move may have accomplished is eliminating any network
delays that could cause FM to time out waiting for the files to open

One other thing you may try is opening all files in the book before you do
the PDF, which should also eliminate any network issues.

The 2G RAM and kinda limited free space may be marginal if it's "an
incredibly large book" ... There's a lot of file swapping and temp file
creation involved in the process.

Upgrading to FM 9.0 and Word filters

2009-11-11 Thread Alan Litchfield
OK. That is something that I too am interested in before committing
cash.

Historically it has been a problem ably sorted by mif2go, but does the
problem remain?

Sorry Scott, just trying to clarify the tense in your answer.
