RE: FM 7.2 deletes files from disk

2009-11-23 Thread David Shaked (Wernick)
Thanks to all who replied online and offline. The problem is now solved.

For the benefit of others who might encounter a similar problem, it might be
worth explaining the solution.

The FM files are stored in a source-control system. For OS compatibility
reasons, I had FrameMaker 7.2 and my local copy of the FM files on a
virtual disk managed by Microsoft Virtual PC. When I moved the files to a
physical disk, the problem disappeared. Likewise, the problem disappeared
when I left the files on the virtual disk and compacted the disk.

It seems possible that the problem was caused by disk corruption. I can't be
sure of this, however. In all other respects, the virtual disk worked fine.
The disk passed diagnostic tests without error.

I have worked in FrameMaker in the virtual environment for approximately two
years with no previous problem. At regular intervals, I defragment the
physical disk and the virtual disk, and I compact the virtual disk.

In any event, I moved my local workspace to the physical disk, and all is
well. FrameMaker remains on the virtual disk.

Technical Communication Suite

2009-11-23 Thread ETudsbery

Hi all,

I am interested in buying the Adobe Technical Communication Suite (TCS),
and was wondering if anyone had experience of upgrading to the TCS from a
previous version of FrameMaker.

I currently use FM 7.2 and WebWorks ePublisher 9.2. Does anyone know if FM
9.0 will work with ePublisher 9.2?

If I buy an upgrade to TCS from Fm 7.2, can I continue to use FM 7.2 and
install the other components of the TCS? If I continue to use FM7.2, can I
use it with the Acrobat 9.0 Pro Extended in the TCS?

Thanks,

RE: TOC generation in multiple language environment

2009-11-23 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Klaus,

My solution is this:

1 In your TDM file on the reference pages set up an addtional
new page. If you already have a page TDM then call the new
  page IVZ.

2 Copy everything from the TDM page to the new IVZ page.
Change the name of the text frame to IVZ.

3 Copy the first paragraph at the top of the IVZ page:
  openObjectId $relfilename:$ObjectType $ObjectId
Insert it 3 more times. Assign them these paragraph names:
  ActiveIVZ
  AktivIVZ
  ActiveTDM
  AktivTDM
This way the contents file will always work, no matter,
whether someone renames a TDM file to IVZ or vice versa.

4 Copy alle headings with TDM and insert them below the TDM
headings. Rename the TDM in these paragraph formats to
  IVZ.

5 Repeat this on the TDM page.

Now you have a contents file which you can always use no
matter whether FrameMaker would create contents files with TDM
or IVZ. Just put your contents file template into the same folder
of the book with its contents file. Then rename your template to
the name of the existing contents file. Update the book.

However, in my oppinion FrameMaker should be able to do such
a mapping (TDM - IVZ - TOC) internally. Let's see what we
get in version 10.

Best regards

Winfried

Subject: TOC generation in multiple language environment

 Dear all,

I came across the following situation (FM-9, but this does
 not matter):

 - A documentation company using the French version of FM has
 developed
 the
template and created documentation, for example, a maintenance
 manual.
Since they are `French´ the template uses style names such as texte,
titre-1 and titre-2. The table of contents file is named xyzTDM.fm
 and
the relevant style names are titre-1TDM and titre-2TDM (Table De
   Matières).

 - It is not a problem using the German version of FM to
 maintain such a
book and re-generate the table of contents. Everything works fine.

 - But when you use this `French´ template for a new FM book, you are
not happy with the results when adding the table of contents to the
 book.
Although you set up the TOC file with suffix TDM, the existing style
names titre-1TDM and titre-2TDM are not used by the
 process. Instead
 new
style names titre-1IVZ and titre-2IVZ (InhaltsVerZeichnis) are
 defined
and used for example in the reference page.

This seems to be a result of an early mislead localistion process
 (similar
to the attempt of MS to translate the macro language of Word, which
 created havoc).

How to get a correctly formatted table of contents with the German
 FrameMaker?

 I see only this method:
 - Make a copy of the template and rename the 'automatic'
 'french' style
   names to 'german' ones: titre-1TDM = titre-1IVZ
 - The flow on the reference page must be renamed from TDM to IVZ.
 - Build the book from this template
 - Insert a TOC using the 'german' suffix IVZ to avoid confusion.
The process will use the 'german' styles titre-1IVZ etc. and the TOC
will be correctly formatted from the beginning.

 Is this correct?
I expected that the setting of the suffix would also influence the
 naming
of the automatically generated styles and reference page - but this is
 wishful thingking

However, you can use fm 7* with all TCS components, although as noted, your
old version of ePublisher doesn't support FM 9.

And in general, it's pretty stable, especially if you've applied all patches
and have a decent amount of RAM.

You may get more info if you post on the TCS User group list at

RE: Technical Communication Suite

2009-11-23 Thread Jacob Schäffer
We have several customers that jumped from 7.2 to 9.03 with very little
difficulty. 9.0 was a disaster, but if you patch up to 9.01, then 9.02 and
then 9.03 *before* loading old documents I don't think you will meet much
trouble (our customers work with *Structured* FrameMaker and don't use the
GUI much -- they primarily use automation and the publishing kernel).

Last week a 7.2 customer using CMYK TIFF images in a catalogue (7.449
images) had a problem because his printer implemented new Printing
Technology and therefore no longer accepted pre-separated PS or PDF files
for print (hmmm ... perhaps he didn't want pre-separated files because of
the extra work and added responsibility, but that's another story).

7.2 (Windows version) can NOT provide proper composite CMYK output in any
way; in addition, any version before 9.X simply destroy CMYK TIFF images on
composite output (and 9.X still does when you Print to PDF instead of using
the Save to PDF option, so please *use* the Save option if you possibly can
- and ignore what others have said about their preference for Print to PDF).

Play hazard and stay with pre-9.X versions or play safe and upgrade. That's
the plain and simple choice you have - if you have a realistic view on this
matter!

I got stuck with that, too. It had a certain Art Deco geometric charm...
At first I did not like the tabs for each file, so I unchecked

Later, I wanted the tabs back, so I checked it again, but it didn't
convert the untabbed chapters back to the tabbed UI, I had to do it
myself.
I did it by dragging each file to a magic spot where the tabs belong,
and then dropping it when the magic blue line appeared.

Good luck!

Posted how-to and RoboHelp 8 scripts for recreating FrameMaker warning/notes/tips paragraphs in TCS2

2009-11-23 Thread RJ Jacquez
Dear TCS2 Users,

Here's the full blog post:
http://blogs.adobe.com/rjacquez/2009/11/using_scripting_in_robohelp_8.html

One of the most powerful new features in RoboHelp 8, which rarely gets
mentioned, is the new Scripting engine, which Incidentally is the same
scripting language also used in Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, Soundbooth and
other CS4 products

Put simply, the RoboHelp Scripting Language is a Javascript-based scripting
language that exposes APIs to invoke most of the basic functionality of
RoboHelp in an effort to automate complex or repetitive tasks.

For developing new scripts, all of our Adobe applications with scripting
support use Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit CS4, which naturally ships with Adobe
RoboHelp 8.

For more information about ExtendScript Toolkit CS4, please click
HEREhttp://www.adobe.com/devnet/scripting/.

Here's a practical example of a RoboHelp 8 Script

A common question we hear from our Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2
customers is how do I recreate warning/tip/note tables created in FrameMaker in
RoboHelp 8, where the images used are in the Reference Pages.

The following recording shows how two scripts can be used, based on the
following two scenarios:

1. If you use a two-cell table in FrameMaker.

2. A slightly modified version if you use side-heads instead, to create
warning/tip/note paragraphs.

To apply this to your documentation, please watch the recording in its entirety
and at the end of it, you will have the ability to download both scripts and
put them to work with your own FrameMaker files.

FM 7.2 deletes files from disk

TOC generation in multiple language environment

2009-11-23 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Klaus,

My solution is this:

1 In your TDM file on the reference pages set up an addtional
new page. If you already have a page TDM then call the new
  page IVZ.

2 Copy everything from the TDM page to the new IVZ page.
Change the name of the text frame to IVZ.

3 Copy the first paragraph at the top of the IVZ page:
  openObjectId <$relfilename>:<$ObjectType> <$ObjectId>

However, in my oppinion FrameMaker should be able to do such
a mapping (TDM <-> IVZ <-> TOC) internally. Let's see what we
get in version 10.

Best regards

Winfried

However, you can use fm 7* with all TCS components, although as noted, your
old version of ePublisher doesn't support FM 9.

And in general, it's pretty stable, especially if you've applied all patches
and have a decent amount of RAM.

Technical Communication Suite

That's
the plain and simple choice you have - if you have a realistic view on this
matter!

With Apologies to RJ - just can't quite feel the love or embracethis FM9 interface

2009-11-23 Thread John Sgammato
I got stuck with that, too. It had a certain Art Deco geometric charm...
At first I did not like the tabs for each file, so I unchecked
File>Preferences>Interface>Documents>Open Documents as Tabs

Later, I wanted the tabs back, so I checked it again, but it didn't
convert the untabbed chapters back to the tabbed UI, I had to do it
myself.
I did it by dragging each file to a magic spot where the tabs belong,
and then dropping it when the magic blue line appeared.

Good luck!

FM9 UI modification: rows of tabs possible?

2009-11-23 Thread Art Campbell
Following up on a couple recent threads about the FM 9 interface:

The only really thing that I seriously hate is having to scroll back and
forth along a longish bar of open file tabs to find the window I want.
Has anyone figure out a way to control the tab bar so as to make them wrap?
So you can have several lines of tabs and that all files are visible?

Cheers,

HERE.
