Framemaker fields and Trados Translation Workbench

2010-01-21 Thread Andersen, Verner Engell VEA
Hi
I use FM8 and we are in the process of translating my Framemaker manual
into German via the Trados Transltion Workbench. Then, after translation
we find out that the conversion back to .mif isn't possible.

We find errors in Glossary fields and Index entry fields that are too
long. I have reduced the number of characters in those fields by
dividing index entries into several fields and shortening the glossary
explanaition fields.

Are there other ways to solve this issue?

Best regards,

Verner

RE: Framemaker fields and Trados Translation Workbench

2010-01-21 Thread Ann Zdunczyk
Hi Verner,

The Rule is 256 characters. Your character strings cannot be longer that 256
characters. This goes for index entries, marker entries, text in the
autonumber area of the Paragraph tag. The best rule of thumb is only place
one entry per marker. Even though you can have more than one entry in a
marker you can run into problems when this is translated. If the entry does
grow past 256 character in the translation then your entry will be truncated
when it is pulled back into FrameMaker, or will not return at all. If you
have IXGen then you can use it to split markers that have multiple entries
into separate markers automatically.

Hope this helps.

Keyboard shortcut control for inserting a variable?

2010-01-21 Thread Spectrum Writing
All,

The name of the application for which I am currently developing a manual is
a hideous mix of upper and lower case letters and numbers. (Marketing
really outdid themselves on this one.) Obviously, it's a PITA to type this
creature every time I need to use it , so I set it up as a variable and have
been inserting it when needed. Of course, the Special Variable option
requires me to scroll through a list of variables to find the one that I
want and that's not that efficient either.

Deep in the fuzzy recesses of my mind, I remember something about a nifty
little keyboard shortcut to use to insert a variable (compliments of Fred
Ridder or John Posada or Richard Combs - one of you FM gurus out there!) I
remember something about the list appearing in the bottom tray of the FM
window and you used this keyboard command to scroll through the list
onscreen and select the one that you want - does this even sound close or
right to what I remember?

Anyway, if y'all have the answer, it would be much appreciated.

FW: [Free Framers] Keyboard shortcut control for inserting a variable?/FM crashing when deleting multiple variables?

2010-01-21 Thread Spectrum Writing

thanks all for the responses. BTW, I wanted to delete some old variables
from this document, and when I tried to delete multiple variables before
saving the file, the file crashes - i.e., Special Variables and scroll to
the user-defined variables portion of the list. Select a variable for
deletion and then click the Delete (Trash can) icon. Next user-defined
variable in list is automatically highlighted. Click the Delete icon.
After doing this for a few variables, BOOM, FM crashes. the only way I can
get around this - after I delete a variable, save the file, and THEN click
the Delete icon for the next selected variable in the list.

Major annoyance and not useful at all and I have noticed this behavior in
other pods that have the Delete option. has anybody else? If so, it's a yet
another bug in FM9 that didn't exist in previous versions.

Re: Keyboard shortcut control for inserting a variable?

2010-01-21 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Tammy:

It's a good idea to mention when you're cross-posting to multiple fora.

You want a quick shortcut, hence you need to start with the Escape key
and a q. Because you want a variable, you need to p. G So the
shortcut is: Escape q p (tap and release each key in sequence, case
matters.) Then type the first few letters of the variable's name; when
you see it in the tag information area, in the lower-left area of the
status bar, press Enter/Return to insert the variable.

Other quickies: Escape q then:

p for paragraph catalog
c for character catalog
C for Conditional text tags

Search Google and FrameMaker help for lists of popular and useful shortcuts.

Also, siliconprairiesoftware.com's autotext is an inexpensive and
useful keystroke saver.

Problems with updating unresolved internal xrefs in FrameMaker 7.2p158

2010-01-21 Thread lsachs2

Can someone on this list possibly explain why suddenly I'm not able to update
unresolved internal cross-references with this version of FrameMaker? I can
find unresolved external cross-referneces to other chapters, but not unresolved
internal cross-references. As a result, I can't update a book file. All the
chapters are open, of course. I'm using conditional text to generate two
different versions of a book.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, except telling me I need to upgrade
FrameMaker. That's not an option for me.

Thanks much for your help.

RE: Problems with updating unresolved internal xrefs in FrameMaker 7.2p158

2010-01-21 Thread Lief Erickson
Hi Linda--

Are any of the references to text that is hidden? If so, the x-ref will appear
to be broken. It will resolve just fine when the text is showing, but as soon
as you hide destination, the x-ref becomes unresolved. The solution is to
either unhide the hidden text, or, more logically, hide the unresolved x-ref,
since the text it is linking to is already hidden.

as soon as you hide destination, the x-ref becomes unresolved. The solution
is to either unhide the hidden text, or, more logically, hide the unresolved
x-ref, since the text it is linking to is already hidden.

Can someone on this list possibly explain why suddenly I'm not able to
update unresolved internal cross-references with this version of FrameMaker?
I can find unresolved external cross-referneces to other chapters, but not
 unresolved internal cross-references. As a result, I can't update a book
file. All the chapters are open, of course. I'm using conditional text to
generate two different versions of a book.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, except telling me I need to upgrade
FrameMaker. That's not an option for me.

 Thanks much for your help.

Re: Problems with updating unresolved internal xrefs in FrameMaker 7.2p158

2010-01-21 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Linda,
Both source and target cross references must share the same conditional text
tag or they will *report* as unresolved if either are hidden in the final
book. To see if there are really unresolved xrefs present (and not just
reported ones), add a list or index of unresolved cross references to your
book. You may get lots of unresolved xrefs in the book-generated error.log,
but none in your generated file. Go by the generated file. You might also
add a list or index of external cross references to see what's going on
there. If you have xrefs to files outside of your book path, you may have
problems. Xrefs to files outside your book in another directory path will
report as resolved if the path is good even though the files are not part of
your book. Frame can find those files. However, the hypertext link will not
work in the resultant PDF because those files are quite obviously not part
of your book.

"Use current document's formatting" applies to formats, including variables
(both user and system variables).
To identify the inset in the container, the file name would have to be
typed text, not a file name variable.

If you switch to "Retain Source's Formatting", you may create a utility
book of all insets, and then use import formats to update formats in all
insets.

We find errors in Glossary fields and Index entry fields that are too

dividing index entries into several fields and shortening the glossary

Are there other ways to solve this issue?

Framemaker fields and Trados Translation Workbench

Of course, the Special > Variable option
requires me to scroll through a list of variables to find the one that I
want and that's not that efficient either.

Lief provided the shortcut (Ctrl+0), but I'll second Huntley's recommendation
of EZVars, which gives you a modeless dialog for picking vars (like the pgf and
char catalogs) and other nifty features like converting existing instances of
WeiRdCaPApp3 to a variable. Check it out at electropubs.com.

FW: [Free Framers] Keyboard shortcut control for inserting a variable?/FM crashing when deleting multiple variables?

2010-01-21 Thread Spectrum Writing

thanks all for the responses. BTW, I wanted to delete some old variables
from this document, and when I tried to delete multiple variables before
saving the file, the file crashes - i.e., Special > Variables and scroll to
the user-defined variables portion of the list.

Keyboard shortcut control for inserting a variable?

2010-01-21 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Tammy:

It's a good idea to mention when you're cross-posting to multiple fora.

You want a quick shortcut, hence you need to start with the Escape key
and a q. Because you want a variable, you need to p. So the
shortcut is: Escape q p (tap and release each key in sequence, case
matters.) Then type the first few letters of the variable's name; when
you see it in the tag information area, in the lower-left area of the
status bar, press Enter/Return to insert the variable.

Other quickies: Escape q then:

p for paragraph catalog
c for character catalog
C for Conditional text tags

Search Google and FrameMaker help for lists of popular and useful shortcuts.

Also, siliconprairiesoftware.com's autotext is an inexpensive and
useful keystroke saver.

HTH

Peter

Nope, it's Esc q v. As you noted later Esc q p is for paragraphs.

And in this case, it's not the _quick_ shortcut either -- Ctrl+0 is faster. :-)

Lief provided the shortcut (Ctrl+0), but I'll second Huntley's
recommendation of EZVars, which gives you a modeless dialog for picking
vars (like the pgf and char catalogs) and other nifty features like
converting existing instances of WeiRdCaPApp3 to a variable. Check it

Ooops, good catch. I wasn't watching my p's and q's. Of course you're correct!

I prefer the semi-mnemonic q shortcuts to the fully-arbitrary
Ctrl+number which I find often makes me question which application I'm
in, before I key it. From the swap of p and v you caught me on, you
can see I need all the help available.

Problems with updating unresolved internal xrefs in FrameMaker 7.2p158

2010-01-21 Thread lsac...@comcast.net

Can someone on this list possibly explain why suddenly I'm not able to update
unresolved internal cross-references with this version of FrameMaker? I can
find unresolved external cross-referneces to other chapters, but not unresolved
internal cross-references. As a result, I can't update a book file. All the
chapters are open, of course. I'm using conditional text to generate two
different versions of a book.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, except telling me I need to upgrade
FrameMaker. That's not an option for me.

Thanks much for your help.

Problems with updating unresolved internal xrefs in FrameMaker 7.2p158

2010-01-21 Thread Lief Erickson
Hi Linda--

Are any of the references to text that is hidden? If so, the x-ref will appear
to be broken. It will resolve just fine when the text is showing, but as soon
as you hide destination, the x-ref becomes unresolved. The solution is to
either unhide the hidden text, or, more logically, hide the unresolved x-ref,
since the text it is linking to is already hidden.
