Can the spelling checker be trusted?

2010-05-27 Thread Shane Taylor
I've seen this error and do not use Franklin Gothic Demi, so I don't
think it's specific to that font. I've also encountered it in paragraphs
that have no overrides or character styles applied at all.

It seems like the spell checker makes the assumption that your most
likely error is omitted spaces, if it can find any smaller words in your
misspelled word. If the assumption were instead that your most likely
mistake was to have misspelled a single word, the first suggestion would
more often be correct.

PDF weirdness

2010-05-27 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Cynthia,

I remember to encounter this every some months (FrameMaker 8).
What helped was just a restart FrameMaker and Acrobat and
create the PDF file anew.

Do you scale the PDF to window size when you open the PDF?
If yes, this is the reason why you did not notice this
yourself first.

Best regards

Winfried

PDF weirdness

Classification: NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED

Yup, checked all that, and I'm printing to the Adobe PDF printer
instance. Everything's set to A4 and 100%.

Good luck, Cynthia. I've forgotten all of the details, but I've had
this happen in FM 6 and FM 7, too, so we can't blame FM 9 for this one.

I'm pretty sure the settings were on the Frame side. Sorry if a bit
vague, but I'd suggest you double-check the Print Setup settings at the
book level and make sure you have A4 under Paper - Size. Hopefully,
you're printing to the Adobe PDF instance. Double-check the Adobe
settings and make sure that page size is A4 also. The other place to
check is the Page Size settings under Format - Document - PDF setup. Do
this at the book level and you can handle every chapter at once. If all
three of those spots (Print Setup, Adobe PDF Page Size, and Format Doc)
are set for A4, you should be good. If not, hopefully others on the list
will have further ideas.

HTH,
Jim

Good afternoon all.

One of my engineers came to me today having printed out a PDF I sent him
(FM9p250, WinXP SP3).

Not a dry seat in the house - the (A4) page was a tiny rectangle in the
middle of the sheet. When I fired up the PDF in Reader on my laptop it
reported being displayed at 779% of actual size. Well, roll me over and
thrash me with a stick of limp celery.

I've checked every setting I can find and there's nothing obvious.
Anyone come across this before?

RE: Thought for the day

2010-05-27 Thread Mary Sheahan
An American friend (male) studied for a year in London.
Apparently he nearly spilled his beer when an attractive female used the phrase
"knock me up" to mean "stop by and knock on my door".
Parallel construction to "ring me up" -- but drastically different than the
American meaning!

Thought for the day

2010-05-27 Thread Mary Sheahan
An American friend (male) studied for a year in London.
Apparently he nearly spilled his beer when an attractive female used the phrase
"knock me up" to mean "stop by and knock on my door".
Parallel construction to "ring me up" -- but drastically different than the
American meaning!

Thought for the day

2010-05-27 Thread Nancy Allison
As does rooting for your team, in Australia. Expect a few startled looks, then
grins . . .

In case anyone wonders about the tech-writing aspect of this discussion, it's
the many tricky highways and byways of localization even within the English
language.

Re: Thought for the day

I found 'nice' to be most troubling after having married a Brit. In that
US it's a bit of a limp compliment, but in the UK it carries stronger
positiveness. "Did you like the curry?" "It was nice, thanks" has a
totally different effect in the two dialects, especially to her who
cooked the curry!

And it never fails to crack me up when I hear him say "I could just
murder a glass of water!" or "they do a gorgeous crab salad" -- in
Amurrican English, we don't use "murder" or "gorgeous" that way.

Thought for the day

2010-05-27 Thread Pinkham, Jim
My high school Spanish teacher used to tell the story of planning to
dine one evening with her Brit friends.

One guy said to her, "I'll come by about 6 and knock you up."

"I think not!!" she retorted, indignantly.

I saw a similar sign in a Glasgow restaurant that said, "This door is
alarmed". I thought, "How can you tell?"

Because English is used (quite) a bit differently in the UK, I kept
chuckling about the signs I saw while I was in Scotland. I knew what
they meant, but the North American meaning was quite different than the
UK meaning.

Thought for the day

2010-05-27 Thread Jenny Greenleaf
Nor should you get offended if an Australian man offers to nurse your baby.

That one really caught me off-guard the first time I heard it!

That's why we need to ask you to prepare the test case... the
process often reveals an issue you can fix on the spot.

Does the same thing happen with two files if you do it by hand?
Try making a book with two copies of your short test case; does
that work? We import the conversion template to each file
individually, because you may want to use different templates
for different files.

Are the xrefs that are not working as desired to targets in
the same file, or in different files? Maybe the problem is
that when you convert one file and update xrefs, the *other*
files in the book are not using the modified numbering formats,
so you get what they *are* using, the old one. In that case,
you will need to change your workflow a little:

1. Copy the Frame book and chapter files to another dir as
a backup.

2. Manually import the conversion template to the whole book,
and manually update xrefs from the book. Remove the reference
to the conversion template from your mif2htm.ini.

3. Run the conversion.

4. Copy the backup files back over the working set to restore
your numbering for other uses.

>So if I only have one file in my book file, doesn't matter which,
>the x-refs are updated correctly, but if I have more than one file,
>the x-refs are not updated correctly. Any suggestions?

See if that works. We haven't run into this before because
you are the first we know of to change the content the xref
is getting in the other files as part of conversion. Most
people just change the xref format, and that works fine. I
suspect this issue is because you're changing the numbering
properties too.

FM9, Mif2Go, and Cross-Refs

2010-05-27 Thread Martha Lee
Hi Jeremy and fellow Frmaers

As Jeremy suggested below,I tried manually importing the template and then
updating the x-refs with the menu. The Figure and Table x-refs display
correctly, with the single number. I then set out to create a one page test
case to send to OmniSys, and guess what, when I strip it down to one page,
the x-refs are updated correctly. Next I tried the whole file, and the
x-refs were in the correct format. Then I added a second file to the book
file, and the x-refs were incorrect. So if I only have one file in my book
file, doesn't matter which, the x-refs are updated correctly, but if I have
more than one file, the x-refs are not updated correctly. Any suggestions?

By the way, I'm on digest, so please cc me in any response.

Thanks.

Martha

See if the update after the import is working correctly. We
use an FDK call that should always do that:
F_ApiUpdateXRefs(docId, (IntT) (FF_XRUI_EVERYTHING |
FF_XRUI_FORCE_UPDATE));
And if we get a failure response, we put up an alert dialog.
But it's possible that FM9 broke something there, as it does
in so many other places... :-( So check it manually:

1. Make a backup copy of your current chapter files elsewhere.
2. Open the book, and manually import the template.
2. Update all xrefs using the menu command.
4. See if they really changed. If not, you've found an FM9 bug.
Consider going to FM8 instead; it actually works.
5. Close Frame and copy your backup files over the ones you changed.

If you see correct updating manually, but not when using Mif2Go,
we'll need a test case, as described in Appendix D: a one-page
chapter file that shows the problem. Just trim one of yours
down; it really must be that small for this purpose. Include
the .fm, .prj, conversion template, all .inis, the MIF (very
important!), and all output files, all in one .zip. Then we
can diagnose the cause and hopefully fix it, FM9 permitting.

>And if it's relevant, I'm running Windows XP64.

Make sure you installed the conversion DLLs and exes that
normally go into \windows\system32 into \windows\SysWOW64
instead. We mention this on the download page, but recheck.

This sounds familiar. I seem to recall Dov Isaacs of Adobe describing a
Windows GDI bug with certain documents, particularly larger documents set
with a high DPI, or documents with large type. I don't recall the
explanation of the bug, but the correction is to go into the AdobePDF driver

PDF weirdness

2010-05-27 Thread Pinkham, Jim

Jim

RE: FM9, Mif2Go, and Cross-Refs

Thanks.

See if the update after the import is working correctly. We
use an FDK call that should always do that:
F_ApiUpdateXRefs(docId, (IntT) (FF_XRUI_EVERYTHING |
FF_XRUI_FORCE_UPDATE));

HTH!

RE: PDF weirdness

2010-05-27 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Cynthia,

I remember to encounter this every some months (FrameMaker 8).
What helped was just a restart FrameMaker and Acrobat and
create the PDF file anew.

Do you scale the PDF to window size when you open the PDF?
If yes, this is the reason why you did not notice this
yourself first.

Best regards

HTH,
Jim

RE: PDF weirdness

2010-05-27 Thread Pinkham, Jim

Boolean expressions in unstructured FM9

2010-05-27 Thread Mary Sheahan
We have many brands in one document - each has a condition for the
brand-specific information. There are also different versions for Canadian and
domestic product. We have been maintaining separate sourcefiles for Canadian
and for domestic versions.

Now that we've jumped to FM9 (from FM7.1) , I am trying to figure out if
Boolean expressions can allow us to merge Canadian and domestic versions.
Unfortunately I am getting an invalid expression when I try to set up the
situation I would need. This is not even attempting proper syntax -- is it
possible to do this in unstructured FM9?

(Canada and Brand1) but not (Brand2, Brand3...BrandX, or Domestic)

Likewise, I would also do the same in reverse -- Domestic, not Canadian.

Thanks,
Mary

Thought for the day

Classification: NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED

My local paper yesterday referred to a car being a right-off. And a
brochure published by the Home Office (the UK ministry for domestic
affairs) about the project I'm working on refers to vehicles being
stationery. The mind boggles.
