Re: Best Adobe tool for creating context-based help?

2010-11-15 Thread Galanter, Lea
We're (the we being four separate doc sites) are planning to
transition from a system in which Word docs are transferred to
Dreamweaver (time-consuming) to using RoboHelp. (As an aside, I have
been producing documentation in Frame, but have only been producing
PDFs, not context-sensitive Help.) I bought the Adobe Tech Comm Suite
and will be authoring topics for context-sensitive Help in RoboHelp (as
well as other outputs). Because we're starting with new products, we'll
be writing topics from scratch rather than importing from Frame.

I don't have a lot of information about how the transition and the
process works yet, but I'm happy to stay in touch and share any pitfalls
and problems we encounter along the way. One thing we're making sure to
do is to plan, plan, plan -- topic structure, templates, style
guidelines, version control, folder structure, etc. I can say that
creating separate Help (the style guide) has been super-easy in
RoboHelp. My only complaint is creating styles for bulleted lists, which
seems to be impossible to do. Otherwise, I find RoboHelp quite easy to
use.

Hi, Denise.

I have used WebWorks ePublisher for several years. I create help down
to the field level and compile everything as one CHM. Most of my
FrameMaker styles map pretty well into WebWorks styles. Some setup is
involved like tweaking indents for some paragraph styles and adding your
company logo, etc. But once that is done, all you do is generate your
help book in FrameMaker then generate the output from WebWorks.

The downside is that WebWorks is a little pricey. But I haven't
upgraded for a few years because I haven't needed to. There are several
other HAT (Help Authoring Tools) out there but I found WebWorks very
easy to use.

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for the tool for crafting
context-based online help. We've always used exported text from Frame;
then
used DreamWeaver to create separate .html topics, applied our company
standard CSS, etc., but I am thinking there's got to be a better way,
because it is clunky and the last product I worked on ended up with 98
separate .html files.

I don't generally build online help (usually write User Guides, Getting
Started stuff, etc.), and would very much appreciate any suggestions
from
any expert advice!

What we're looking to do is have context-based help, which may also
provide
links to other topics, i.e., within the body of the help as well as
Additional Topics at the bottom...

Many thanks in advance! Sincerely,
Denise Salles

I use MIF2Go to export from Frame; you can configure it to generate
the context mappings as you wish.

RE: Job Posting Question.

2010-11-15 Thread Harding, Dan
I think Alan's suggestion has merit. A separate job posting/finding group
would be a great asset.

I'll post a dissenting opinion, simply because by fragmenting this list into
sublists you potentially wind up with a much smaller audience seeing the
announcement, not to mention unawareness of the existence of the new list. This
list has an established audience.

I think that with some common sense guidelines, job posting/wanted posts are
on-target for the list (feel free to disagree with any or all of the following;
I'm just throwing them out there):

1. The position should be specifically FrameMaker-related; no generics.

2. The subject line should have a title or prefix that clearly indicates it is
an employment-related announcement (EMPLOYMENT: or something similar).

3. There should be a mandatory waiting period before reposting the same
announcement (1x a month max? biweekly perhaps?)

It shouldn't be a problem as long as there are no abusers of the policy...
naïve perhaps, but hey, I can wish! :)
