[Violation] Annotations were found inside the BleedBox, TrimBox, or ArtBox on the following pages and PDFX/1-a standard

2011-02-01 Thread Joanna Przystup
I have a problem with distilling ps file with the PDFX/1-a standard.
Document is printed to ps from the FrameMaker application.

While distilling file, Acrobat Distiller creates a log containing following
message:
[Violation] Annotations were found inside the BleedBox, TrimBox, or ArtBox
on the following pages
and therefore none PDF file is produced.

I guess that it is related to the cross references. But what is strange - it
doesn't appear in all of the books. When printed document is structured - it
is printed well with the PDFX/1-a standard, and doesn't complain about
annotations.

I've found two solutions for now - but none of them is actually acceptable:
-replace all cross references with text
-do not select Generate Acrobat Data when printing

I will appreciate your help with solving this problem

Joanna

Back-saving from FM10 in a form that can be opened by older versions of

I would like to know what the backward file compatibility of Frame10 is.
What is the oldest rev of FrameMaker whose files Frame10
can open natively, without the need for an intermediate conversion to MIF?

Slash in dialog boxes become bullets in pdf

2011-02-01 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
Hi Framers,
Windows XP, Frame 8.0p277, unstructured.
Thanks for the replies to my e-mail about conditionalized cross-references -
that one is still not solved, unfortunately :(.
Now I have a new problem: When I type a slash (/) in a dialog box, it comes out
as a bullet in my pdf. I have seen it in my index and in a variable. One
strange thing though: My variable is OK in headings, but in body text the
slashes come out as bullets in the pdf. In my Frame files everything looks OK.
Any ideas/suggestions how I can avoid this? (I tried putting a backslash before
the slash, but that didn't change anything)

Thanks,
Christiane

I had the same or a similar problem. If I remember right, there were
notices popping up that the programs were unregistered, but no menus to
allow me to register them. I did something-- I forget what (deleting the
*.fm files for the SP plugins in fminit?)-- that made the menus return,
but entering the registration data would not stick and would be lost
when I closed FrameMaker.

If I recall correctly, the fix was to find the various *.fm files
belonging to the SP plugins in the fminit folder: AutoText.fm,
CHARREG.fm, etc. Right-click on each one and choose File Properties
Security Tab, and then set permissions for Users to allow everything. As
I recall, they had read-only permissions set that were the cause of the
problem.

RE: Question about some FM plugins

2011-02-01 Thread Fred Ridder

You are assuming that the missing registration that the notice is complaining
about is a license registration. But it could also be that the registration in
question is an entry in the Windows Registry, or a registration as a FrameMaker
API Client in the corresponding section of the maker.ini file. Since you're
dealing with plug-ins, my guess is that it's the latter. And if so, a further
issue is whether the API Client registration is in the all users copy of
maker.ini or the user-specific overlay maker.ini.

RE: Slash in dialog boxes become bullets in pdf

2011-02-01 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
OK, here are some more details:

* FrameMaker 8.0p277, unstructured

* Types of dialog boxes: Variable definitions and Index marker text.

* My variable format definition: SAILOR 6120/30/40/50 (just text, no
character formats or anything)

* I think my index entry was I/O connector or something similar

* The font is a special company font (Type 1)

* I don't get any missing fonts messages in FrameMaker

* Another thing: I tried experimenting a bit. When the paragraph format
had Weight = Bold, the problem was not there (that was the reason why my
headings were OK). But since I can't have all my variables in bold, I tried
changing the variable definition with commas instead of slashes. Then I changed
it back to slashes, and now the problem is gone! Exactly the same definition as
before, but now I don't see the problem. Only trouble is: I am not very
confident that the problem won't come back...

Hi Christiane

You certainly are discovering some weird phenomena! It would help if you could
give concrete examples, though. Can you post (to the list):
what version of FrameMaker
which dialog boxes you are referring to
the exact format for your variable
the character format definitions used in your variable, if any
what exactly you typed for your index entry
what fonts you are using, and the type (e.g. OpenType, Type 1, etc.)
whether you get any missing fonts messages in the FM console

These details would help immensely in trying to help you.

Upgrading to TCS3 from FM9

2011-02-01 Thread John Sgammato
I am considering upgrading to TCS3. I do not have any TCS or any RoboHelp now,
just FM9. I also have CS5 Design Premium.

TCS3 includes FM10, RH9, Acrobat, Captivate, and Photoshop. I already have
Photoshop and Acrobat in CS5. I am a little anxious about adding them again
when they are working fine already.

It looks like a regular upgrade is $1299 for the whole package. I see no
competitive upgrade deal or any upgrade that takes the CS5 into account. Does
anyone here know of better deals on TCS3? I can wait awhile it the proce is
likely to come down.

RE: [Violation] Annotations were found inside the BleedBox, TrimBox or ArtBox on the following pages and PDFX/1-a standard

2011-02-01 Thread Dov Isaacs
Joanna,

FrameMaker is not a graphic arts application. Its output is primarily RGB and
the PostScript generated by the driver is not setup to generate PDF that will
conform to the PDF/X-1a specification.

The PDF/X-1a specification doesn't allow for any of the cross reference stuff
capabilities of PDF, annotations, embedded video, etc. It is strictly for
old-style PDF CMYK and spot color printing without any transparency, layers,
JPEG2000 compression, etc.

Unfortunately, the current FrameMaker save as CMYK PDF doesn't quite work
right to yield a CMYK (plus spot color) PDF. The only workaround is to use
Distiller settings to convert the RGB to CMYK, a somewhat risky proposition, or
to use the color conversion features of Acrobat X Pro to selectively convert
colors from RGB to CMYK and then, use the Acrobat X Pro preflight function to
fix the file and create PDF/X-1a.

Is there an actual fix for this? I often get these with AI formatted files, and
my past searches indicated that it was an old bug that wasn't going to be

I have seen this thread somewhere and searched the archives
 but couldn't find it:
I am using FM 9 (all patches installed), and when I print to
PDF, some images appear with a thin black line on the right
side. I had this once before, and fixed it (so I know there's
a simple solution), but my IT guy did something to my
computer and now they are back. Does anybody remember the
 solution to this?

Not true, and Dov knows that. What Dov mean is that the only ADOBE

There are quite a few repair options out there in the wild cyperspace, and
I think Dov should have the chance to mention some of the very qualified

There are QUITE a few.

Joanna,

FrameMaker is not a graphic arts application. Its output is primarily RGB
and the PostScript generated by the driver is not setup to generate PDF that
will conform to the PDF/X-1a specification.

The PDF/X-1a specification doesn't allow for any of the cross reference
stuff capabilities of PDF, annotations, embedded video, etc. It is strictly
for old-style PDF CMYK and spot color printing without any transparency,
layers, JPEG2000 compression, etc.

Unfortunately, the current FrameMaker save as CMYK PDF doesn't quite work
right to yield a CMYK (plus spot color) PDF. The only workaround is to use
Distiller settings to convert the RGB to CMYK, a somewhat risky proposition,
or to use the color conversion features of Acrobat X Pro to selectively
convert colors from RGB to CMYK and then, use the Acrobat X Pro preflight
function to fix the file and create PDF/X-1a.

I have a problem with distilling ps file with the PDFX/1-a standard.
Document is printed to ps from the FrameMaker application.

While distilling file, Acrobat Distiller creates a log containing
following
 message:
[Violation] Annotations were found inside the BleedBox, TrimBox, or
ArtBox
 on the following pages
and therefore none PDF file is produced.

I guess that it is related to the cross references. But what is strange -
it
doesn't appear in all of the books. When printed document is structured -
it
is printed well with the PDFX/1-a standard, and doesn't complain about
 annotations.

I've found two solutions for now - but none of them is actually
acceptable:
-replace all cross references with text
-do not select Generate Acrobat Data when printing

I will appreciate your help with solving this problem

2011-02-01 Thread Art Campbell
I remember that thread you mentioned but I can't find it either...

So what I'm remembering from the thread is that it had something to do
with layers in the Photoshop file randomly appearing on the
surface

But I also don't remember the fix because it hadn't happened to me.

What I'd try as a solution is either using an alternate format like
PNG or flattening the PSD.
An easy way to do this semi-automatically is with Dr. Brown's 1-2-3
script -- you can save your open PSD file in several formats and sizes
in one pass. http://www.russellbrown.com/scripts.html

Formatting of multi-marker indexes...

2011-02-01 Thread Scott Prentice

Hi...

If you create an index from multiple marker types, is there a way to
apply different formatting to the resulting entries from each marker
type? Like, is there a way to assign one reference page to be the
formatting for the Index markers and another reference page to be the
formatting for the OtherIndex markers?

I'm thinking the answer is no .. but wanted to check with y'all.

Thanks,

...scott

I'm thinking the answer is no .. but wanted to check with y'all.

It's not clear what you want to format. But in any case, you don't assign
reference pages to anything. If you create an index, a text box containing the
IX flow is created on a reference page (which by default is also named IX). The
contents of the IX flow specify how the index is generated, ordered, and
formatted.

The IndexIX paragraph, which typically contains $pagenum, tells FM to
include page-number references to markers of type Index. You can include
another marker type in your index by creating a pgf like IndexIX, but named
after the second marker type, e.g., OtherIndexIX. It can be formatted
differently -- for instance, you could make it bold or italic -- but that
formatting will be applied only to the page number.

The Level1IX, Level2IX, etc., pgf formats are used for the index entries at
those levels. So every 1st-level index entry will have the same pgf format,
whether it's from an Index marker or an OtherIndex marker.

If you want the text for an OtherIndex entry formatted differently, the
solution is simple. But you have to do it in the marker text when you create
the OtherIndex marker. You can include character formats, enclosed in angle
brackets, in the marker text. For instance, let's say you have a char format
named Other that formats the text the way you want the OtherIndex entries to
look. To create an entry for configuration, put this in the marker text:

OtherconfigurationDefault Para Font

These things, and a lot more that you can do, are reasonably well explained in
the help/manual under Tables of Contents and Indexes.

See Richard's excellent post on this.

To summarize, you'll need to embed format command information in each
source marker.

small commercial

If you want to do this en masse, you could have IXgen selectively
bring all the markers of a given type into its Editable Marker List
utility, and then apply a character tag appropriate for the desired
marker formatting. (In just a few mouse clicks this character tag
could be applied to all the markers collected during this pass.)

Then, when you apply the Editable Marker List back to the source
documents, IXgen will convert the character tagging into the embedded
format commands needed by FM to format marker text in the
final IX document.

(This character tag/embed format command conversion feature was added
in IXgen 7. And, as a sanity check, you can toggle between tagging and
embeded commands before you apply the marker list.)

You could repeat this for each special marker type in use, assuming
you had more than one othermarker type and wanted unique formatting
for each.

Thanks,
Christiane

I recall, they had read-only permissions set that were the cause of the

Question about some FM plugins

2011-02-01 Thread Fred Ridder

You are assuming that the missing registration that the notice is complaining
about is a license registration. But it could also be that the registration in
question is an entry in the Windows Registry, or a registration as a FrameMaker
"API Client" in the corresponding section of the maker.ini file. Since you're
dealing with plug-ins, my guess is that it's the latter. And if so, a further
issue is whether the API Client registration is in the "all users" copy of
maker.ini or the user-specific "overlay" maker.ini.

Slash in dialog boxes become bullets in pdf

2011-02-01 Thread Christiane Crety (CC)
OK, here are some more details:

* FrameMaker 8.0p277, unstructured

* Types of dialog boxes: Variable definitions and Index marker text.

* My variable format definition: SAILOR 6120/30/40/50 (just text, no
character formats or anything)

* I think my index entry was "I/O connector" or something similar

* The font is a special company font (Type 1)

* I don't get any missing fonts messages in FrameMaker

* Another thing: I tried experimenting a bit. When the paragraph format
had Weight = Bold, the problem was not there (that was the reason why my
headings were OK). But since I can't have all my variables in bold, I tried
changing the variable definition with commas instead of slashes. Then I changed
it back to slashes, and now the problem is gone! Exactly the same definition as
before, but now I don't see the problem. Only trouble is: I am not very
confident that the problem won't come back...

Christiane

Hi Christiane

You certainly are discovering some weird phenomena! It would help if you could
give concrete examples, though. Can you post (to the list):
what version of FrameMaker
which dialog boxes you are referring to
the exact format for your variable
the character format definitions used in your variable, if any
what exactly you typed for your index entry
what fonts you are using, and the type (e.g. OpenType, Type 1, etc.)
whether you get any missing fonts messages in the FM console

These details would help immensely in trying to help you.

Subject: Slash in dialog boxes become bullets in pdf

Hi Framers,
Windows XP, Frame 8.0p277, unstructured.

Thanks,
Christiane

Except that the Silicon Prairie plugins don't use API clients, and even
if they had, I had copied my my maker.ini file over to the new computer
from a working installation. So they would have already been listed in
there.

Anyway, the solution for me was to set the permissions on the previously
mentioned files. There's no need to run FM in administrator mode.

Unfortunately, the current FrameMaker "save as CMYK PDF" doesn't quite work
right to yield a CMYK (plus spot color) PDF. The only workaround is to use
Distiller settings to convert the RGB to CMYK, a somewhat risky proposition, or
to use the color conversion features of Acrobat X Pro to selectively convert
colors from RGB to CMYK and then, use the Acrobat X Pro preflight function to
"fix" the file and create PDF/X-1a.

Even more unfortunate is that the feature list for FrameMaker 10 still says,

You just have to use the Macintosh or Solaris version of FrameMaker 10 to get

thin black line on some images

2011-02-01 Thread Gray, Steven (EPS)

Is there an actual fix for this? I often get these with AI formatted files, and
my past searches indicated that it was an old bug that wasn't going to be
squashed. I adjusted my workflow (at least with line art) to include Photoshop
for cropping and converting to something like PNG. If there's a way to save a
couple of steps, I'm all ear...um...eyes.

If you'd like to solve this, it'd be helpful to the rest of us if
you'd provide the standard system info: OS, versions of Frame and
Acrobat, amount of RAM, how you're importing the graphics, the
graphics file format, how you're creating the PDF, and so on.

There are quite a few "repair" options out there in the wild cyperspace, and

thin black line on some images

2011-02-01 Thread Art Campbell
I remember that thread you mentioned but I can't find it either...

So what I'm remembering from the thread is that it had something to do
with layers in the Photoshop file randomly appearing on the
surface

But I also don't remember the fix because it hadn't happened to me.

What I'd try as a solution is either using an alternate format like
PNG or flattening the PSD.
An easy way to do this semi-automatically is with Dr. Brown's 1-2-3
script -- you can save your open PSD file in several formats and sizes

Formatting of multi-marker indexes...

2011-02-01 Thread Scott Prentice
Hi...

If you create an index from multiple marker types, is there a way to
apply different formatting to the resulting entries from each marker
type? Like, is there a way to assign one reference page to be the
formatting for the "Index" markers and another reference page to be the
formatting for the "OtherIndex" markers?

I'm thinking the answer is no .. but wanted to check with y'all.

Thanks,

...scott

It's not clear what you want to format. But in any case, you don't assign
reference pages to anything. If you create an index, a text box containing the
IX flow is created on a reference page (which by default is also named IX). The
contents of the IX flow specify how the index is generated, ordered, and
formatted.

The IndexIX paragraph, which typically contains "<$pagenum>," tells FM to
include page-number references to markers of type Index.

For instance, let's say you have a char format
named Other that formats the text the way you want the OtherIndex entries to
look. To create an entry for "configuration," put this in the marker text:

configuration

These things, and a lot more that you can do, are reasonably well explained in
the help/manual under "Tables of Contents and Indexes."

See Richard's excellent post on this.

To summarize, you'll need to embed format command information in each
source marker.

If you want to do this en masse, you could have IXgen selectively
bring all the markers of a given type into its "Editable Marker List"
utility, and then apply a character tag appropriate for the desired
marker formatting.

You could repeat this for each special marker type in use, assuming
you had more than one "othermarker" type and wanted unique formatting
for each.

Hope that helps,

thin black line on some images

2011-02-01 Thread Bethany Lee
Thanks for following up, Art. Here's the info:

OS: Windows Vista; 32 bit
FrameMaker 9
Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended (I have TCS 2.5)
RAM: 4 GB
I import graphics from PhotoShop and Illustrator by reference using the .PSD
and .ai files; however, so far, I have only seen this happening to .PSD files
I print to PDF from FrameMaker, which distills it first
This thin black line is random. It does not appear on all images, and if I
recreate the PDF, it will appear on different images than the first time I made
the PDF.

If you'd like to solve this, it'd be helpful to the rest of us if
you'd provide the standard system info: OS, versions of Frame and
Acrobat, amount of RAM, how you're importing the graphics, the
graphics file format, how you're creating the PDF, and so on.

Can a single footnote be used by more than one reference?

2011-02-01 Thread Brian Chan
I have a document, in which I have the same reference to a footnote in three
different places. Can this be done? How?
?
Using structured Frame 9 on XP.

"[Violation] Annotations were found inside the BleedBox, TrimBox, or ArtBox on the following pages" and PDFX/1-a standard

2011-02-01 Thread Joanna Przystup
I have a problem with distilling ps file with the PDFX/1-a standard.
Document is printed to ps from the FrameMaker application.

While distilling file, Acrobat Distiller creates a log containing following
message:
"[Violation] Annotations were found inside the BleedBox, TrimBox, or ArtBox
on the following pages"
and therefore none PDF file is produced.
