RE: Registration marks missing

2011-02-08 Thread White, Scott
Good points from all.

The bottom line though, is anyone on here getting registration marks to appear
when using save as pdf instead of print to pdf? If so, can I get a step by step
to see if I am missing something in my settings?

Thanks in advance.

Scott,

This is likely a PDF /CropBox understanding issue, which mean that
everything might be OK afterall. Unfortunately, the term CropBox might
bring confusion although the concept is clear.

/CropBox defines the *visible* page size in a viewer. CropBox has
effectively NOTHING to do with trimming according to crop marks - although
the name says so.

/MediaBox defines the RAW print paper size, ie. when you print a letter
size on legal or A3 paper, you'll see the cut marks and use a hand-held
knife to cut :-)

/ArtBox is of absolutely no use if you wish a reference to a fixed region
(I've NEVER understood the significant value of the ArtBox EXCEPT when
placing PDF as substitute for EPS -- in which case it's totally meaningless
to apply crop marks (because they will become art))

/TrimBox, which defines the true cutting edges in real-world production
anno 2011.

In many cases ignorant designers and quite a few software packages sets both
TrimBox and CropBox *wrong* and in some cases with reversed meaning --
adding huge to overall confusion.

Personally, I discarded the Save As PDF in Frame 9 a long time ago. I did
that when I discovered it was based on more than 10 years old PostScript
Level 1 code stolen from antediluvian Unix versions of Framemaker.

So, printing to PDF from Frame is *still* ultimately the best bet *IF* and
*ONLY* if you work with RGB bitmap art (TIFF, BMP, JPG) and avoid spot
colours like the plague.

If you use CMYK TIFF, don't go to print at all *unless* you can
*successfully* use Save As PDF *or* persuade your printer to accept
pre-separated PostScript or PDF for print. And -- in this case -- don't say
go without a final proof.

Unfortunately I can't offer a bullet-proof work-around. However, my Publi
PDF software has made quite a difference for SEVERAL Framemaker users
worldwide over the past decade, of which MANY users subscribe to this list.

I have paid enormous amounts to Flexera Software to keep an Activation
Service alive for Publi PDF, and through the past 3 years the residue from
the Publi PDF *single user* edition has been approx the price of one or two
(very, very, very good though) Italian Amarone(s). Anyway, today I'm working
on other very promising projects and really only win nothingness by keeping
the Publi PDF client licensed. Hence, Publi PDF - in the form most users
know it -- is going FREEWARE quite soon (USD 850 per license today).

I really think Publi PDF could help you with your catalogue, but you'll have
to experiment with it. As FREEWARE Publi PDF is *effectively* unsupported.

A good place to start is here: http://www.grafikhuset.net/PubliPDF/

You'll find a LOT of information here:
http://www.grafikhuset.net/PubliPDF/techdocs.htm. You MUST read this stuff
if you REALLY want to know what Publi PDF can do for you. I don't answer
questions that is already answered in the techdocs section.

The latest *official* single user edition is revision 1.50.0432. This is
available for download from: http://grafikhuset.net/PubliPDF/download.htm.
This edition works with Distiller 8.X to X and GPL GhostScript 8.70 or later
(that's not true, older versions are supported, but DON'T use them). This
version may work on Vista and Windows 7 if you understand how to disable
UAC. If not, wait for version 1.9.X.

The latest *real* Publi PDF Client is revision 1.9.X. It will be published
to http://grafikhuset.net/PubliPDF/download.htm as soon as I can find the
time for it. This version runs smoothly on Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), and I
don't care anything about

Sure. Create your destinations with newlink markers in Frame and then
create the requisite hyperlink in Word.

ePublisher will even validate the links between the different document
types in your project. ;-)

And yes, this trick is also possible to do with DITA documents. You can
mix/match content from all three sources to create a unified deliverable

WebWorks 7 Character Mapping

2011-02-08 Thread Brad Anderson
Framers,

For those of you old-time WebWorks folks on the list. I have a friend that is
still using Frame 7 and WebWorks Publisher 7 to produce HTML. The process has
been working splendidly for the past 10 years. I've recently had to do a bit
of updating for him, and I'm having trouble with some of the special
characters. I think it is due to the special font mapping that FrameMaker had
internally. Most characters can be mapped fine by looking in the Windows
Character Map utility or in the FrameMaker Character Set PDF.However, there
are a couple of characters that I cannot find the \u code for. The stickiest
is the degree symbol.

If I use the \u00B0 WebWorks just blows by it and the degree (°) is output but
then renders incorrectly in the browser.

I believe this to be the result of FrameMaker internal character mapping. If I
copy the degree symbol from the character map and paste it into Frame, it
converts to something other than the degree. If I use the masculine ordinal
indicator (º) (it looks very close to the degree), everything works fine.

If anyone know how to find out which characters are mapped in Frame and how to
intercept, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Brad

Re: WebWorks 7 Character Mapping

2011-02-08 Thread Michael Müller-Hillebrand
Brad,

Starting with a certain version, WWP has an internal mapping that matches the
FrameRoman encoding to Unicode (and it handles the Mac characters also). I
remember that old charcater maps were kept in old form (mapping to FrameRoman),
but new maps used Unicode. I am not sure how to detect the difference. But you
can not mix \xfb (FrameRoman for the degree) and \u00B0 in the same character
map. Could this be the source of the problem?

I understand you first need to match the character before thinking what the
output should be.

My old WWP support pages are still available, they live here:

http://wwp.cap-studio.de/index.html.en

There is also a character lis document that might be helpful, even though it
does not show Unicode values, only Western Windows ANSI codes:

http://wwp.cap-studio.de/common/res/FM_SBCS_complete.html

I have about one request/year regarding WWP and sometimes I remember some
stuff...

Silicon Prairie's Master Page tool will solve all these heartaches. You can
specify how you want your Master Page settings once in a MasterPage.fm file
and then use paragraph tags and/or markers to apply all master pages in a
single step - no need to go through page by page. I have no financial

Hello all,

I just discovered four pages in a long document I published almost a
year ago that were missing appropriate headers. This happened because I
inadvertently had an appendix-related master page applied, rather than
Right/Left.

I'm not going to blame FrameMaker for my goof but I would like to know
if anyone else finds setting Master Page Usage to be very confusing?
Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't seem very smart, meaning, I seem to
have to keep going back and re-setting usage as pages add. Especially I
find that when I apply a master page that changes the layout from
portrait to landscape or vice-versa, I have to keep re-selecting pages
that missed the conversion because the layout caused repagination.

Either way, it seems that the only way to be sure that master page usage
is correct is to check every single page.

Am I missing something simple? I hope I'm explaining myself
sufficiently.

It would help to tell us what version of FM you're using and some more details
about how you're using master pages.

FM's master page usage isn't, by itself, intended to be smart -- just simple
and consistent. Unless you tell it otherwise, FM automatically applies the Left
master page to even pages and the Right master page to odd ones.

In recent versions of FM (starting at 6 or 7, IIRC), you can use master page
mapping to assign a specific master page when a particular pgf format occurs.
Look up master page mapping in the help or doc.

I've never used master page mapping myself. My chapter files are designed to
use the default Left and Right master pages for everything except the first
page. And the appendix files use the same master pages as the chapters. Files
that require different master pages (title page file and index) have their own
master pages different from those in the chapter files.

If you can't rethink the way you use master pages (e.g., don't create custom
master pages for an appendix), I suspect master page mapping is what you need.

Concurrent Installations of Adobe Acrobat and Reader

2011-02-08 Thread Mike Wickham
Hmmm... this is interesting. I stumbled upon it while searching for the
still unavailable 64-bit PDF iFilter v10. Adobe representatives have
been telling us for years not to have multiple Acrobat/Reader

Registration marks missing

2011-02-08 Thread Alan T Litchfield
Changing the page size will not resolve your problem since that will
only move the marks further beyond your reach (they exist beyond the
ArtBox that you see in the preview image of the file). It is probable
the marks are there but that you just cannot see them.

Here is something you can try:
Open the pdf in Acrobat and select Advanced > Print Production > Crop
Pages
With Show All Boxes selected, choose BleedBox from the drop down list
Set the Units to your preferred measure
Enter the distance you require into the Margin Controls Field (say 10mm)
Click OK.

Good Luck

Registration marks missing

2011-02-08 Thread Alan Litchfield
OK. What if you print to PDF instead, and then follow those steps?

It is preferable, I think, to have FM create the marks so that they are
accurately placed as the time of creation.

At least you are headed in a better direction :)

Registration marks missing

2011-02-08 Thread White, Scott
Good points from all.

The bottom line though, is anyone on here getting registration marks to appear
when using save as pdf instead of print to pdf? If so, can I get a step by step
to see if I am missing something in my settings?

Thanks in advance.

Scott,

This is likely a PDF /CropBox "understanding" issue, which mean that
everything might be OK afterall. Unfortunately, the term "CropBox" might
bring confusion although the concept is clear.

/CropBox defines the *visible* page size in a viewer. CropBox has
effectively NOTHING to do with "trimming" according to crop marks - although
the name says so.

/MediaBox defines the RAW "print" paper size, ie. when you print a "letter"
size on "legal" or "A3" paper, you'll see the cut marks and use a hand-held
knife to "cut" :-)

/ArtBox is of absolutely no use if you wish a reference to a fixed region
(I've NEVER understood the significant value of the ArtBox EXCEPT when
placing PDF as substitute for EPS -- in which case it's totally meaningless
to apply crop marks (because they will become "art"))

/TrimBox, which defines the true "cutting" edges in real-world production
anno 2011.

In many cases ignorant designers and quite a few software packages sets both
TrimBox and CropBox *wrong* and in some cases with reversed meaning --
adding huge to overall confusion.

Personally, I discarded the "Save As PDF" in Frame 9 a long time ago. I did
that when I discovered it was based on more than 10 years old PostScript
Level 1 code stolen from antediluvian Unix versions of Framemaker.

So, printing to PDF from Frame is *still* ultimately the best bet *IF* and
*ONLY* if you work with RGB bitmap art (TIFF, BMP, JPG) and avoid spot
colours like the plague.

If you use CMYK TIFF, don't go to print at all *unless* you can
*successfully* use "Save As PDF" *or* persuade your printer to accept
pre-separated PostScript or PDF for print. And -- in this case -- don't say
"go" without a final proof.

Anyway, today I'm working
on other very promising projects and really only win nothingness by keeping
the Publi PDF "client" licensed.

I don't answer
questions that is already answered in the "techdocs" section.

This version runs smoothly on Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit),

Please help me stop weeping

Angela,

It is certainly possible to link between FrameMaker and Word documents
with ePublisher. You'll just be working with FrameMaker's hypertext
markers to make it happen.

I've posted the required steps and a sample ePublisher project up on the
WebWorks wiki if you'd like to try it out.

Sure. Create your destinations with "newlink" markers in Frame and then
create the requisite hyperlink in Word.

ePublisher will even validate the links between the different document
types in your project. ;-)

And yes, this trick is also possible to do with DITA documents. You can
mix/match content from all three sources to create a unified deliverable
with ePublisher.

WebWorks 7 & Character Mapping

If I use the \u00B0 WebWorks just blows by it and the degree (?) is output but
then renders incorrectly in the browser.

I believe this to be the result of FrameMaker internal character mapping. If I
copy the degree symbol from the character map and paste it into Frame, it
converts to something other than the degree. If I use the masculine ordinal
indicator (?) (it looks very close to the degree), everything works fine.

If anyone know how to find out which characters are mapped in Frame and how to
intercept, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Brad

WebWorks 7 & Character Mapping

I have about one request/year regarding WWP and sometimes I remember some
stuff...

Master Page Usage confusion

2011-02-08 Thread Tim Pann

Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't seem very "smart," meaning, I seem to
have to keep going back and re-setting usage as pages add.

Silicon Prairie's Master Page tool will solve all these heartaches. You can
specify how you want your Master Page settings once in a MasterPage.fm file
and then use paragraph tags and/or markers to apply all master pages in a
single step - no need to go through page by page. I have no financial
affiliation with the software - just a very satisfied customer.

Master Page Usage confusion

It would help to tell us what version of FM you're using and some more details
about how you're using master pages.

FM's master page usage isn't, by itself, intended to be "smart" -- just simple
and consistent.
