So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

Worse, that upgrade thing is a cheat. I was contentedly using FM6 which, when
bought, had an upgrade path of two versions. That meant I could upgrade to FM
7 or FM8 when I was ready. Yeah, right.

The *same week" Adobe released FM 9 they pulled all the upgrade packs for FM8 -
just at the very moment I decided I wanted FM8 for the structured support.
Every single outlet in Australia (and I rang them all!) told me the same story
- FM8 upgrade packs are all packaged up ready to go back to Adobe, not allowed
to sell them.

Finally got hold of Adobe sales/support in Australia (not easy!), to be told
that, no, my only option now was to buy full FM9 and then apply for a downgrade
to FM8. This apparently comes as a link to an ISO in a secret corner of
Adobe's ftp facilities: they don't supply a disk in return for all that money!

Well, I did not (and still don't) want FM9 and was in no way willing or able to
beggar myself to get the FM8 upgrade I am entitled to. Luckily, with a lot of
perseverance, in March 2009, I was able to pick up a remaindered retail copy of
full FM8 from **somewhere** (at remaindered software price, natch!) so was able
to avoid the full Sting. IMO, Adobe's "moving goalpost" attitude to policy
stinks at least 200% more than the sins that Microsoft is accused of!

So, no, I never did FM 7. I guess I'm "stuck with FM 8" now, but I'm
comfortable with that. I think the Mac users have been roundly ripped off, too.

Bah!

So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

2011-03-02 Thread Don Rinderknecht
Well, you can still upgrade to Frame 10 from 8 or 9 (not just 9) but
riddle me this batman

You can upgrade to Tech Comm Suite from Frame 7 for $1299 (saves you 300
over TCS direct purchase).

I really wish Adobe would come out with a roll your own suite... I've
got CS5, but Frame 7.1... I'd like to pick my own components that I
need... for example... Fireworks is perfect for what I need, but I have
to have Photoshp. (Web "Standard" CS no longer exists.)

At the risk of going Off Topic I really miss Macromedia's upgrade
prices.

My 2 cents.

Don.

Two answers...

. First point: I was joking.

. Second point: Apple still uses FrameMaker for a lot of its own documentation,
about which, as you know, they take considerable care over style and
presentation. Also, with Mr Jobs now gone, some members of the Apple board are
showing signs of starting to think about new directions now that the
i-everything market is becoming saturated. They have $6 million to play with.

But basically I was just daydreaming: spring brings that on ;-)

Text insets

2011-03-02 Thread Martin Ley
Hi folks,

I generally shy away from text insets, as they invariably barf on me in the
target document - I get a spurious paragraph at the end of the imported inset
which appears to be the same style (but with an asterisk) as the first
paragraph of the source text.

This is a nightmare generally, and specifically if that initial paragraph is a
Head1 (for example) - I get a blank entry in my TOC.

Over the years, I have tried various ways to get around this, and thought I had
discovered nirvana in the form of an old thread:

http://www.freeframers.org/archive/00/msg01966.html

I tried the solution advocated in that thread and it seemed to work. Briefly. I
gamely began producing a whole raft of insets in one document, in their own
Flows, so I could import them into various target docs.

This week, my hard drive died, so I'm working from a bootable backup. Now, even
using the same source FrameMaker files, I seem to be back to the bad old days
of extraneous empty heading-style paragraphs. Does anyone have a clue as to how
I can get around this? Or was I just dreaming? :-(

I'm using Frame 9 (latest patches) on an MacBook Pro(OS X 10.6.6) running Win7
under Parallels Desktop for Mac. Old (dead drive) Mac had 8GB RAM. This one
only has 3GB (so reconfigured Parallels to cope).

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I'm excited about getting FM 10 here at work.
I've been using FM9 for a couple of years, and it was a huge improvement over
7.2 to me. I've used only unstructured and I'm just doing run-of-the-mill

FM 7.2 was good enough for a long time, but I discovered that it didn't play
well with some of the older books I work on, especially the large ones. Then
came FM 9 and the nifty redesign--yeah, some of it's a PITA but you get used to
it. After attending the Adobe webinar about TCS3 and one about FM 10, I am
ready to go to the next level.

Hi Leigh,
This appears to be the intended behaviour. To be honest, I can't think of a

Best of luck.

I'm trying to add some text as autonumbering at the end of a paragraph.
Regardless of the justification setting for the paragraph format, the
autonumber is right-justified, creating a LOT of blank space between the
paragraph text and the autonumber. In other words, I want

Blah blah blah - Continued

(where "-Continued" is the autonumber)

but I get

Blah blah blah..-
Continued|

where | is the right margin and the dots represent blank space. Happens
regardless of whether the autonumber is text, a building block, whatever.
What's up with this?

Thanks,
Leigh

Re: So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

2011-03-02 Thread Steve Johnson
IMHO, it's time to close out this discussion because it's become a
series of meaningless rants. Regardless of what you think about the
various versions of Frame over the years, as of the release of Frame
10, the only prior version you can get from Adobe anymore is Frame 9.
Adobe has closed the door on Frame 8, 7, and so on.

You can say whatever you want and most of us will probably agree but
propagating this discussion here isn't going to change anything. If
anybody knows how to directly contact the Frame program manager or
senior management, you should post that so all of us can take a shot
at those people and let them feel some of our frustration.

I'm trying to add some text as autonumbering at the end of a paragraph.
Regardless of the justification setting for the paragraph format, the
autonumber is right-justified, creating a LOT of blank space between the
paragraph text and the autonumber. In other words, I want

Blah blah blah - Continued

(where "-Continued" is the autonumber)

but I get

Blah blah
blah..-
Continued|

where | is the right margin and the dots represent blank space. Happens
regardless of whether the autonumber is text, a building block, whatever.
What's up with this?

Thanks,

autonumber at end of text is mis-aligned

2011-03-02 Thread Fred Ridder

That's just the way autonumbering works. The autonumber characters always
appear after the pilcrow, all the way at the paragraph's right margin setting.

The only way I see to accomplish what you want to do is to use a 2-paragraph
solution. You'd define a new paragraph tag that has whatever continuation text
string you want to use as its autonumber (using the before paragraph position
option). Then you'd define a new paragraph tag that is identical to your
regular text paragraph except that it is set to be a run-in head on the
Pagination tab of the Paragraph Designer. And to streamline things, you could
set that paragraph format to have the "continuation" paragraph as the next
patragraph tag. In use, you'd apply the "text continued" tag to the paragraph
in question, and then press Enter to insert an otherwise empty paragraph that
has the desired autonumbering string. Not pretty, but it works. And it seems
like a kind of strange requirement in the first place (IMO).

So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

2011-03-02 Thread Everette, Dimi
Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I'm excited about getting FM 10 here at work.
I've been using FM9 for a couple of years, and it was a huge improvement over
7.2 to me. I've used only unstructured and I'm just doing run-of-the-mill
technical publications, but I love FrameMaker--always have and always will
(probably!).

Dimi

Hi Leigh,
This appears to be the intended behaviour. To be honest, I can't think of a
single instance where I have wanted the autonumber to begin at the end of a

[f2a] Linkg from Visio diagrams to FM files (final deliverable is a PDF)

2011-03-02 Thread Shlomo Perets
Tammy,

You wrote:

If you are referring to including links in the native graphics that will be
carried over as interactive items to the PDF, this requires other formats
(e.g. SWF, with Acrobat/Reader 9 or later, or U3D, as well as
production-side add-ons).

Even though Visio itself supports the insertion of hyperlinks for objects
inside the drawing, this functionality is carried over to PDF when Visio
drawings are integrated into FM (which is then converted to PDF).

With Visio (or with any other graphic format you can use in FrameMaker),
simply add text frames in the anchored frame containing the graphics, with
the hypertext markers defining the links (typically gotolink markers
pointing to destinations defined with newlink markers). When the graphics
is revised/resized, you will need to review/update the size/position of the
text frames or the markers' content.

Set the graphic runaround property to "Don't Run Around", so that text
frames can placed on top of the graphics without the frame content being
"repelled".

Text frames (and the resulting PDF links) are always rectangular.
Technically, it is possible to set the link highlight property to None so
that no attention is drawn to the rectangle shape (e.g. when the link is
placed over a diamond shape).

Have you examined the joboptions for Distiller to ensure that the font

So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

2011-03-02 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
By Adobe changing their upgrade policy, to *not* allow upgrades for a
few version back, they essentially have raised their price a lot for
those who want to stay even somewhat current.

You used to be able to upgrade every three versions without a problem.
Now you have to upgrade *every* version to get the $400 upgrade price.
Essentially they raised their upgrade price 300%!

You really have to wonder whether we should be looking a for a cheaper
solution. FrameMaker is a good program, but is it really worth the price?

Two answers...

. First point: I was joking.

. Second point: Apple still uses FrameMaker for a lot of its own documentation,
about which, as you know, they take considerable care over style and
presentation. Also, with Mr Jobs now gone, some members of the Apple board are
showing signs of starting to think about new directions now that the
i-everything market is becoming saturated. They have $6 million to play with.

But basically I was just daydreaming: spring brings that on ;-)

IMHO, it's time to close out this discussion because it's become a
series of meaningless rants. Regardless of what you think about the
various versions of Frame over the years, as of the release of Frame
10, the only prior version you can get from Adobe anymore is Frame 9.
Adobe has closed the door on Frame 8, 7, and so on.

You can say whatever you want and most of us will probably agree but
propagating this discussion here isn't going to change anything. If
anybody knows how to directly contact the Frame program manager or
senior management, you should post that so all of us can take a shot
at those people and let them feel some of our frustration.

changes to Times New Roman.

The corporate face is AG Book Rounded. In the Frame paragraph designer
this displays as ‘AG Book Rounded Medium’; but in C:\Windows\Fonts the
nearest equivalent is ‘AGBookRounded-Medium (OpenType)’.

However, this doesn’t seem to be the cause, or at least not all of it. I
tried substituting ‘Myriad Pro’ (name in paragraph designer - which is
an Adobe supplied typeface, admittedly), the equivalent of which in
C:/Windows/Fonts is ‘MyriadPro-[VariantName] (OpenType)’ and this did
not get substituted.

I’ve reinstalled Acrobat and Frame since importing the fonts into
C:/Windows/Fonts and the fonts all show up in the Frame fonts list, so
it must be a foible of Acrobat X, mustn’t it?

This is the corporate typeface for titles of publications so it’s a bit
important that I resolve this soon.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Anthony,

Have you examined the joboptions for Distiller to ensure that the font

So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

2011-03-02 Thread st...@siliconprairiesoftware.com
[Sorry for the long message. A download at the could make it worthwhile.]

It's not an uncommon situation. I have several large documentation sets I
maintain that are on FrameMaker 7.0, and it's likely that's where
management says they will stay for now.

I personally have seen some of the problems that have been reported with
running older versions of Frame on Windows Vista and Windows 7. I had
tried using the compatibility settings that Windows Vista and 7 provide.
The settings helped in Windows Vista, but actually made things worse in
Windows 7. I would get the graphic frame dragging crashes, and have very
sluggish performance of the application even on very fast hardware.

My solution was to create a compatiblity shim that installs on the system.
A compatibility shim is a standard way to control operating system
settings for a specific program, allowing it to be more compatible with
the base operating system. A compatibility shim provides much more control
over the settings than the basic compatibility settings provided by the
base operating system.

I have been using the first version of this shim for a few years. I just
recently had to update it to work on a 64-bit Windows 7 machine. It makes
Frame 7 function very much like it did on Windows XP.

Since there has been some discussion about this, I decided to make the
compatibility software available for download. You can get it from the
Downloads page at the Silicon Prairie Software web site:

http://www.siliconprairiesoftware.com

It's way down at the bottom of the Downloads page.

Like the other software on the site, it's available as Shareware. If you
try the software and it helps you out, please consider paying the token
shareware fee. This one is entirely on the honor system! :-)

Hopefully you see the same benefits of the compatibility shim that I have.

Steve
