Hi Lea,
Regarding your message below, this was a problem in FM 5,and maybe FM6.
If I'm not wrong, this was fixed in FM 7 - if not FM7 then definitely by FM8.
I use it now (FM8) and it works fine- in fact, for some things I do - SAVE AS
PDF is the preferred way to print.

Have a great day!
Orly.

Hi Art,

Sadly, regardless of the fact that Adobe has owned both Frame and Acrobat for
quite a while, the collective wisdom on this list is that ?Save as PDF? should
not be used. Ever. Many folks have posted problems with this feature ranging
across four versions of Frame that I know of, and I?m a relative newcomer. A
few people have posted that it works for them, and more power to them. For
myself, I?ve given up ever even attempting it.

Good day everyone,
As I understand it, the main problem with Save as PDF has always been what
you have defined as your Default Printer. If it was anything other than Adobe
PDF, then you had no end of problems. It was my understanding that with Frame
7, Save as PDF would automatically use the Adobe PDF print definitions and
thus work as advertised. I've never had a problem with it, maybe because my

Hi!

And yet for me, documents that rendered correctly for some time (going from
FrameMaker 9 to PDF by printing to postscript (.ps) files) no longer show
just one graphic I need on my title page. So I have to save that file as PDF
to get the graphic to come across and then add that page to my PDF of the
rest of the book.

It's annoying (and time-consuming) that something that worked well before no

RE: Slightly OT: Frame 10 landscape pages not recognized in Acrobat X

2011-03-16 Thread White, Scott
I just finished an 800-page catalog using save as PDF. It was suggested
to use this option since we were running four-color. Well it worked and
didn't. It took all of our color .tif images and .eps images and
rendered them correctly. My pantone colors for section bleed tabs, all
but one, came out as spot color and had to be converted at the printer.

My Helvetica fraction fonts got substituted and I had two process the
files again, the same way, and they came out with the correct fonts.
Spent WAY too much time fixing files.

Also, when I ran the index my page numbers came out backwards in some
cases. As an example -- 546-548, 13-18, 20 -- instead of in order.

Frame 9 has really steered me back to my old MAC, running classic and
Frame 7. That was consistent and results were as expected.

Hi,

I am outside the proposed »collective wisdom on this list is that “Save as PDF”
should not be used«. There are quite a few people using this and in automated
processes it is one of the best options. Those people just don’t speak up.

What is a fact for FrameMaker 9 and 10: The so-called »pristine CMYK output« is
not working as advertised in so many situations that it is common wisdom to
recommend _selecting_ the »Convert CMYK to RGB« checkbox (and thus switching to
the behavior of earlier versions). Because the Print to File process always
works this way (converting CMYK to RGB) it may appear as if this would be the
cure for printing problems.

Debra, what you describe is really awkward and apparently not connected to the
CMYK issues, since you print to file. I don’t understand exactly what you
experience. It seems you imported a graphic on your title page that used to be
converted to PDF easily with older versions of FrameMaker but not so with
FrameMaker 10...? Could you please share a little bit more information, like
the format of the graphic and using which tools it was created? Maybe even the
graphic?

I try to speak up about this occasionally ... :)

For me, Save as PDF works well (perhaps better?) and have said so a few times
in the past.

My only usual problems is when upgrading FM or Acrobat. I have to do one or two
experiments (with the Acrobat setup) to prevent FM from crashing. After that,
all is well till the next software upgrade.

Maybe my setups are simply different in some way? I don't know ...

Debar, recently I had the situation with a client that some graphic that was
working OK in FrameMaker 7 and earlier started to make problems in FrameMaker
8+. The problem was a unusual encoding of some string inside that EPS file,
which came from FreeHand 3 or something else from the last century. Resaving
the EPS file in a current product version was the cure.

Maybe you can just re-save that TIF image using a current version of an image
editor and make sure to save it without LZW compression (this makes it harder
for apps to deal with the file) or anything that reads JPG (this reduces
quality). If the TIF is CMYK you could also try with converting to RGB.

Try one thing at a time, so you/we know what was the source of the problem.

Good luck,

Slightly OT: Frame 10 landscape pages not recognised in

2011-03-16 Thread Orly Zimmerman
Hi Lea,
Regarding your message below, this was a problem in FM 5,and maybe FM6.

YMMV,

Slightly OT: Frame 10 landscape pages not recognized in Acrobat X

Good day everyone,

As I understand it, the main problem with "Save as PDF" has always been
what you have defined as your Default Printer. If it was anything other
than Adobe PDF, then you had no end of problems. It was my understanding
that with Frame 7, "Save as PDF" would automatically use the Adobe PDF
print definitions and thus work as advertised. I've never had a problem
with it, maybe because my Default Printer under Frame is always Adobe
PDF.

As always, YMMV.

Slightly OT: Frame 10 landscape pages not recognised in Acrobat X

2011-03-16 Thread Michael Müller-Hillebrand
Hi,

I am outside the proposed ?collective wisdom on this list is that ?Save as PDF?
should not be used?. There are quite a few people using this and in automated
processes it is one of the best options. Those people just don?t speak up.

What is a fact for FrameMaker 9 and 10: The so-called ?pristine CMYK output? is
not working as advertised in so many situations that it is common wisdom to
recommend _selecting_ the ?Convert CMYK to RGB? checkbox (and thus switching to
the behavior of earlier versions). Because the Print to File process always
works this way (converting CMYK to RGB) it may appear as if this would be the
cure for printing problems.

Debra, what you describe is really awkward and apparently not connected to the
CMYK issues, since you print to file. I don?t understand exactly what you

For me, "Save as PDF" works well (perhaps better?) and have said so a few times
in the past.

My only usual problems is when upgrading FM or Acrobat. I have to do one or two
experiments (with the Acrobat setup) to prevent FM from crashing. After that,
all is well till the next software "upgrade".

Good luck,

- Michael

Hi Gillian,

I am using the beta version and it has a FrameMaker 8.0 save option. I am
not sure about the release version. However, have them save the document as
.MIF and you will be able to open it with 8.

Splitting tables across a page break: FM 8

You can insert the "Table Continuation" or "Table Sheet" variable in

Hi All,
In unstructured FM8, if I have a table that might split across a page
break if new content is added above it, is there a way that I can have a
line of text e.g., "...continued" inserted conditionally after the last
entry on the page, before the break? Ideally, I would like to do this
{whatever} with all table formats that are defined in my template.

Any ideas welcome.

Slightly OT: Frame 10 landscape pages not recognised in Acrobat X

2011-03-16 Thread Debra Laroche
Hi Michael,

It's a .tif file that's the corporate logo and until recently I had no
problem having it convert correctly from FrameMaker to PDF using the print
to .ps file (because of the landscape pages I have in several chapters of my
book). It worked fine until a week or so ago. Now I have to save that file
as PDF for it to render as I want, then add it to the PDF file created from
the postscript file when I print the entire book. This worked fine, as I
say, until quite recently. It always baffles me when previously seamless
operations become fragmented like this is for me. I tried saving the logo as
a .png file, which didn't work either. I copied it in instead of importing
by reference; again that didn't work. The only workaround I found so far is
to do what I'm doing...

Hope that helps!
Deb

Frame 10 save to Frame 8 files

2011-03-16 Thread Michael Pearson

Hi Gillian,

FM10 won't save to FM8 binary via the Save dialog, though it can do this via
ExtendScript. If a script isn't an option for, you can always have your
colleague save as FM10 MIF (or FM7 MIF, if you prefer) via the Save dialog.

Apply Master Pages not working

2011-03-16 Thread Theresa de Valence
I previously had master pages swapping correctly (by paragraph tag).
However, since then I have copied the book to a new book (cross
references working) and deleted many excess paragraph tags. Now my Apply
Master Pages is not working correctly.

This is v 8 in structured frame, but the document is not structured. As
far as I can determine, this shouldn't matter.

The only reason I can figure for the faulty Apply Master Pages is that
some of the paragraph tags in the HTML Mapping Table do not exist.

Ideas?
