In the medical device industry (which is where I currently work), we use
Warnings, Cautions and Notes in precisely the manner - and order - described

Only Warnings gets an icon (exclamation point inside a triangle).

The use of Warnings, Cautions, and Notes, specifically Warnings and Cautions,
are used differently in different technologies.

Here are some links that may hep you to decide which use best fits your needs:

And MIL-STD-38784C states:
WARNINGS : Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure,
practice, condition, statement, etc, which, if not strictly observed, could

CAUTIONS: Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure, practice,

Another thing that most people don't adhere to is that WARNINGS should come
before CAUTIONS, which should come before NOTES, when any two, or all three,
may apply to the following paragraph or section.

Linking Problem

2011-08-02 Thread Eduardo F . Cidade Sr .
Good afternoon

I’ve been experiencing a tonload of trouble linking to documents in a server
where the
address contains backslashes “\” and NOT forward slashes “/”

Problem: whenever I write the syntax to go to the hypertext link?...FrameMaker
does funny
things to the link itself….

Example:

message URL \\jetblue.com\Docs\Manuals\jbdocs\Flight Operations Training Manual
(FOTM).pdf
becomes the following when I click “Edit Hypertext Marker”…..
message URL \\jetblue.com‡ocs\smanuals\jbdocsƒlight Operations Training Manual
(FOTM).pdf

I think the use of the backslash is causing this….or……is it a bug???

So I’m trying to use any tool native to FrameMaker to keep the link intact.

This has been bothering me for a long time and it’s one of the laundry list
items I’ve been
trying to cure.

Any assistance would be most appreciated….

Re: Linking Problem

2011-08-02 Thread David Spreadbury
If your are linking to locations on Windows-based systems, enclose the entire
link in double-quotes if you have spaces anywhere in filenames or path. Windows
truncates the string at the first space but accepts the complete string if
enclosed in double quotes (), for example:

\\jetblue.com\Docs\Manuals\jbdocs\Flight Operations Training Manual (FOTM).pdf

should work.

If linking to a server from a Windows platform, backslashes are all that will
work. A forward slash results in and error - Invalid switch - /.

Frame 10 crashes and corruption

2011-08-02 Thread Martinek, Carla
A couple of us here at work are experiencing repeated Frame 10 crashes and file
corruptions while doing *simple* tasks. It so bad that one writer is
considering saving all of her work back down to FM9 format and returning to
that.

Are others having the same problem?

We're on WinXP SP3 with FM10.0.1.402.

And, on a related note, although I'm sure the developers considered it a
feature and not a bug that they introduced, I noticed that the sort order
for para styles has been messed with. Again. NOW FM10 is
sorting UPPERCASE letters prior to lowercase letters, whereas in FM9 it was
lowercase then uppercase.

I and a few others fought this battle during the FM9 beta, and as a result the
SymbolSortingBeforeAlphaNumeric=On/Off parameter was added to the maker.ini
file so you could specify your preferred sort order (in FM8 and older, symbols
sorted before alpha/numeric - in FM9, they had them sorting afterwards, unless
you changed the parameter.)

Might not be a big issue to some people, but when you have shortcuts for the F8
and F9 keys built into your style names, it plays havoc with what styles are
applied as compared to what you expect to be applied.

RE: Linking Problem

2011-08-02 Thread Fred Ridder

As others have noted, the backslash is a reserved character in FrameMaker
dialog boxes. There is a whole series of backslash codes defined to allow you
to type special characters (i.e., characters that you can't produce directly
from the keyboard with only the Shift key as a modifier) in dialogs. If you
refer to Appendix B of the FrameMaker User Guide (in PDF form in the Documents
directory of your FrameMaker installation) you will see that the substitutions
in your hypertext command mostly match the backslash codes:
\D (Shift+d) produces a double dagger, as in your example
\M (Shift+m) is supposed to produce an em-space--no idea why it came through as
sm in your example
\F (Shift+f) produces a florin, as in your example
\j is not defined and therefore comes through as literal characters, as in your
example

The trick to get FrameMaker to render a literal backslash is to double it. But
that doesn't explain why the doubled backslashes at the start of your pathname
came through as doubled backslashes in the result--it should have come through
as a single. To get doubled backslashes, you should theoretically have needed
to type four in a row.

2011-08-02 Thread Art Campbell
Could you give more details on your environment? Could you give some
details on how much RAM, how much free space; are the FM files and
graphics local or on a server, etc and what exactly do you mean
by simple tasks?

Are the files and books you're working with FM 10 files, or legacy
files that you rolled forward from earlier releases? If they did come
from earlier releases, did you MIF-wash the files in 10?

For the record, on Win 7 32 and 64 systems with 4-8 G RAM, I don't
remember the last time I had a 10 crash.

notice how it now reads openlink to make the jump

ANSI 2007 says:

DANGER: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will
result in death or serious injury. This signal word is to be limited
to the most extreme situations.

WARNING: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could
result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could
result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used without the
safety alert symbol as an alternative to "Notice".

NOTICE: "NOTICE" is the preferred signal word to address practices
not related to personal injury. The safety alert symbol shall not be
used with this signal word. As an alternative to "NOTICE" the word
"CAUTION" without the safety alert symbol may be used to indicate a
message not related to personal injury.

Only Warnings gets an icon (exclamation point inside a triangle).

The use of Warnings, Cautions, and Notes, specifically Warnings and Cautions,
are used differently in different technologies.

Here are some links that may hep you to decide which use best fits your needs:

http://www.techcommunicators.com/dkmanual/chap5015.html

And MIL-STD-38784C states:
WARNINGS : Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure,
practice, condition, statement, etc, which, if not strictly observed, could
result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.

CAUTIONS: Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure, practice,
condition, statement, etc, which, if not strictly observed, could result in
damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.

NOTE: Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure, condition, or
statement.

Another thing that most people don't adhere to is that WARNINGS should come
before CAUTIONS, which should come before NOTES, when any two, or all three,
may apply to the following paragraph or section.

Hi Eduardo,

The backslash in the marker window (sometimes) escapes the character following
it. You need to use forward slashes instead.

Linking Problem

2011-08-02 Thread David Spreadbury
If your are linking to locations on Windows-based systems, enclose the entire
link in double-quotes if you have spaces anywhere in filenames or path. Windows
truncates the string at the first space but accepts the complete string if
enclosed in double quotes ("), for example:

"\\jetblue.com\Docs\Manuals\jbdocs\Flight Operations Training Manual (FOTM).pdf"

should work.

If linking to a server from a Windows platform, backslashes are all that will
work. A forward slash results in and error - "Invalid switch - "/".

And, on a related note, although I'm sure the developers considered it a
"feature" and not a "bug" that they introduced, I noticed that the sort order
for para styles has been messed with. Again. NOW FM10 is
sorting UPPERCASE letters prior to lowercase letters, whereas in FM9 it was
lowercase then uppercase.

Linking Problem

\M (Shift+m) is supposed to produce an em-space--no idea why it came through as
"sm" in your example
\F (Shift+f) produces a florin, as in your example
\j is not defined and therefore comes through as literal characters, as in your
example

The trick to get FrameMaker to render a literal backslash is to double it. But
that doesn't explain why the doubled backslashes at the start of your pathname
came through as doubled backslashes in the result--it should have come through
as a single. To get doubled backslashes, you should theoretically have needed
to type four in a row.

Frame 10 crashes and corruption

2011-08-02 Thread Art Campbell
Could you give more details on your environment? Could you give some
details on how much RAM, how much free space; are the FM files and
graphics local or on a server, etc and what exactly do you mean
by "simple tasks"?

Are the files and books you're working with FM 10 files, or legacy
files that you rolled forward from earlier releases? If they did come
from earlier releases, did you MIF-wash the files in 10?

For the record, on Win 7 32 and 64 systems with 4-8 G RAM, I don't
remember the last time I had a 10 crash.

Linking Problem......solved

2011-08-02 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
I think it was the "way" I used the marker

I've been using "message URL" to make the jump

Instead, on a "Hail Mary Pass", I used this:

openlink //jetblue.com/Docs/Manuals/jbdocs/MANUAL SUPPLEMENTS/Onboard Delay
Escalation
Policy (ODEP).pdf

notice how it now reads "openlink" to make the jump

Internal Error 10014 when generating toc/index

2011-08-02 Thread Chittister, Robyn
Hello,

I'm using FrameMaker 10.0.1.402 on Windows 7. I have a very large book file -
30 files that total over 1000 pages. Track changes is enabled. All conditional
text is shown. All cross-references are resolved.

Sometimes, after generating the book, I will try to save it. I will then
receive the error:
Internal Error 10014, 6377587, 6370465, 6383969. FrameMaker has detected a
serious problem and must quit.
Please describe your recent actions and send this, along with the generated
file, to fmerror at adobe.com<mailto:fmerror at adobe.com>.

Even if I then deleted the generated files, any time I would generate the book,
and then try to save it, I would receive the error.

At first, it happened when I added the TOC. Then, I was able to add and
generate the TOC, but when I tried to use our template, the book crashed. I
finally got that to work. Then, I added an index, and the book crashed when I
tried to save it. Then, I could add the index, but when I imported reference
and master pages, then generated the book and tried to save it, the book
crashed.

Today, I just opened the book, which had been fine last night, generated it,
tried to save it, and the book crashed.

I tried all sorts of things this evening, and sometimes the book crashed,
sometimes it didn't. I have a very long file that details what I tried.

I have it all working now, but I don't know why it works, and I don't know how
long it will work. I saved to MIF, but a working book and non-working book are
the same number of pages and the same number of characters.

I've seen the Adobe support forum topic on this issue, and it doesn't apply
here.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Does anyone have any ideas as to what
could be happening?

Thank you!

~Robyn

Immovable objects

2011-08-02 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello All

FrameMaker 9.0 p255 on Windows Vista.

Has anyone else had problems with pods or other objects that just won't move? I
was working yesterday in an unstructured document, with the Paragraph Designer
and the Paragraph Catalog open. Neither of these was docked - that is, they
were overlying the document, and I believe my document was maximized. Neither
of the dialogs would move. Dragging the top bar had no effect. Frustrating.

Is this a FM9 bug, or a "feature"? Is there perhaps some secret combination of
things that causes this (or more to the point, stops it)?

Regards,
Roger

warnings, cautions, notes in sw documentation

2011-08-02 Thread Simon North
All the answers I have seen so far seem to relate to HARDWARE.
In a SOFTWARE context, I think it's much more common to
use something like the following (this is my wording, so no official):

Warning: an irrecoverable action (formatting a disk), permanent data
loss or other
action that may result in an irreversible change to the system (such
as deleting a user
account) or damage to the hardware

Caution: an action that may seriously affect system performance (memory usage),
make take an extremely long time (resulting in inability to use the
system), may
seriously affect the system integrity (like removing password control
or disabling a
firewall) or loss or changes as listed for a warning that are reversible.

Note: an action that may result in inconvenience or confusion or,
positively, actions
that may make usage easier.

Any way to hide unconditional text?

2011-08-02 Thread Gay Alson
Hello again, Framers,

(FrameMaker 9.0p255, Windows 7 64-bit.)

Does the following make sense?

Let's say we have 100 text inset files for use in various chapters of
various books. Each TI file starts with this:

  system variable
  system variable
Not a variable; a text description of the text inset
file.
Not a variable; an indication whether the text inset is
app-specific or global.

This information is conditionalized with the Metadata tag (which is used
only here and nowhere else in any of the TI files).

For reporting and versioning purposes, I want to copy and paste each
text inset file into a file called "TextInsets.fm". In this file, I want
to show ONLY text bearing the Metadata tag. However, although I can hide
all of the other condition tags, I can't hide unconditional text. (And I
don't want to have to tag unconditional text with a condition called
Unconditional, just to be able to hide it...!)

Am I overlooking something obvious, or a better way to accomplish this?

Thanks for any suggestions,

~~Gay
