icons on new Macs

2011-12-14 Thread Graeme R Forbes
Does anyone know how to get FM7 (and earlier) document icons to
appear on the desktop on Macs without Classic? On my new intel iMac
running Snow Leopard I see that the icons for some OS9 apps like
PageMill appear correctly, but all I get for FrameMaker docs is an
ugly generic icon.

Thanks,

Frame 9 - setting specific graphic sizes in dita xml jobs

2011-12-14 Thread Pattie Alsop
Hello all,

I'm relatively new to Frame 9. I have worked in previous versions but that was
quite a few years ago.

My problem is this:
DITA XML Job.

EDD has entries for Figure and Image tags.
Ex: Image ...
in all contexts
insert imported graphic file

My page layout is landscape, 3 columns, so when this file opens in Frame, the
graphic is cut off because it should display across the page, and not just in
one column.

I need to be able to control the object properties(?) based on the image width
attribute.
I have 3 different possible width values, 1 column, 2 column, and 3 columns
wide.

How do I achieve that?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

FrameMaker 7 for Mac, print to .ps, Distiller 6.

I am currently packaging a book to be printed in bw using the same
workflow that I've used successfully on lots of other books in the past,
either bw or spot color.

Although I have applied all the processes used for previous books (reducing
photos to 8-bit grayscale, applying Illustrator's 'convert to grayscale'
filter to line art, making sure all included graphics are CMYK and not RGB),
I seem to be unable to remove information in the C, M and Y channels in the
press-ready PDF. The problem manifests itself with inserted photos and
drop-shadows on line art. In preflight, if the C, M and Y channels are
switched off, the photos look bad.

Rather than dump this problem on the printers, I'd like to resolve it here,
but I am out of ideas. Can anyone advise me?

Re: icons on new Macs

2011-12-14 Thread Scott Turner
Can't without an pperable copy of Frame. If you are running Frame in boot camp
or a virtualization program then the icons might appear, otherwise you need to
assign a system icon to the files. Candy Bar might work. It would require a
little graphic work though.

Paragraph styles not importing correctly

2011-12-14 Thread Laura Fergusson
Hi all

I have created a template which contains two separate paragraph styles:
Caution and Warning.

The basic look and feel of the two styles is the same - lines above and below,
with an icon on the left as follows:
[cid:image005.png at 01CCBA53.8901CBF0]

All good so far. The template is fine, but when I Import All Formats from the
template into an existing file, BOTH Caution and Warning appear as Cautions.
That is to say, they LOOK the same (both say Caution and have a yellow icon),
even though they both are tagged correctly as Caution or Warning.
In other words, the Autonumbering for Warning is importing as the Autonumbering
for Caution: they BOTH say Caution: \t in the existing file.

Background info - in the template:

* The word CAUTION/WARNING is part of the relevant Caution/Warning
style, set up in the Autonumbering format as Caution:\t or Warning:\t
respectively. The small caps format is a Character style called "Caution" (used
for both Caution and Warning paragraph styles).

* The icons are on the reference pages as Caution and Warning
respectively.

* The line above and the icon are contained in a
CautionAnchor/WarningAnchor style - Paragraph Above is a single line (from ref
page), Paragraph below is the icon (taken from the reference pages). The Next
Paragraph is set to Caution/Warning as required.

* The line below is contained in the Caution/Warning style - Paragraph
Above is empty, ParagraphBelow is a single line.

I have tried importing into a completely blank document - same thing.
Have also tried deleting the existing Caution and Warning styles from the
existing document, then importing from the template - same thing.

Does anyone know what is going on? Is there a known issue with paragraph styles
not importing correctly? I have not seen this before in my many years of
Framemaker usage.
It is possible that I'm missing something

Many thanks
Laura

FW: Paragraph styles not importing correctly

2011-12-14 Thread Laura Fergusson
Since posting I have managed to solve this. It still seems odd that it didn't
work the way I had it set up but I think I must have been going wrong somewhere.

I created a new Character style called "Warning" identical to "Caution" and
used it for the Warning small caps word. Once imported, that worked ok.

I reapplied the Warning icon to the WarningAnchor style and hey presto.

Sigh. The wonders of Frame.

SGML, MIL-STD-38784

2011-12-14 Thread Ian Proudfoot
Hello Guy
I have developed several MIL-STD applications for FrameMaker.

If the requirement is to deliver only MIL-STD-38784 compliant SGML
instances, then the choice of editing software does include FrameMaker,
Arbortext and any other SGML aware application. If you also have to deliver
formatted output such as PDFs or even paper masters, then the choice is
slightly different.

A FrameMaker SGML application for MIL-STD-38784 would give you a really nice
editing environment and top quality formatted output. However, that would
need to be developed for you by a suitably experienced FrameMaker developer.
I am not aware of any ready-to-run commercial 38784 FrameMaker applications.

With Arbortext the situation is different. The FOSIs that provide the
formatted output are freely available here:
https://pubsweb.redstone.army.mil/DTD-FOSI/38784-dtd.html

Personally, I have used both, but would always choose FrameMaker over
Arbortext...

I hope this helps.

Best regards
Ian Proudfoot

a question to the SIG's list:

"I have a DOD proposal my company is bidding on and one of the tech
manual requirements is to "develop TO files (tagged instances) using
SGML according to the DTDs (Document Type Definitions) referenced in the
appendix to MIL-STD-38784... Does anyone know what sorts of animal I'm
supposed to be delivering and what program I'll use to make that happen?"

I'm pretty sure I've seen people on this FM list discussing MIL-STD
matters, so after I offered to post here, he replied:

"I'm not on the FM users group and would appreciate your posting a
message for me. I've seen various references to Arbortext vs FM and I'd
love to hear from someone who uses FM for mil-std SGML type
documentation."

Framemaker Version 7.0 (used)

2011-12-14 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Pradipta,

Are you buying a PC version? If so, I would recommend that you buy version 8
if you can find it, or at least version 7.2. FrameMaker 8 is Unicode
compatible, which you may find useful. Please let me know if you have any
questions or comments. Thank you very much.

I would like to buy Framemaker Version 7.0 (used). On eBay I saw that there
are some offers from Germany. But I live in India and am not sure whether a
cross-country sale of the software is allowed or not. Somebody told me it is
not. Can anyone please help?

Thanks -

Removing extraneous color channel information

2011-12-14 Thread David Creamer
Where did you create the drop shadows? In AI?
What format did you save the AI files as?
What were your PDF settings?
What version of Acrobat Pro do you have?
(I noticed you are using Distiller 6--is your Acrobat the same version?)

FrameMaker 7 for Mac, print to .ps, Distiller 6.

I am currently packaging a book to be printed in b using the same
workflow that I've used successfully on lots of other books in the past,
either b or spot color.

Can anyone advise me?

icons on new Macs

2011-12-14 Thread Scott Turner
Can't without an pperable copy of Frame. If you are running Frame in boot camp
or a virtualization program then the icons might appear, otherwise you need to
assign a system icon to the files. Candy Bar might work. It would require a
little graphic work though.

SGML, MIL-STD-38784

2011-12-14 Thread Hassen, Vincen D CTR USAF AFMC OC-ALC/GKBLC
With Arbortext, you would need to ensure you purchased Arbortext Print
Composer or "Arbortext Advanced Print Publisher" as I think it is now
called.

Arbortext Editor alone will not provide the required PDF output.
