Re: FrameMaker 10 Crashes When Saving a Book with Conditional Text and TT Edits

2012-09-03 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Joseph

Try the trial version of FM11. FM10 has crashes around conditional text for us,
and we can't reproduce them in FM11. It might be a different bug, but worth a
try.

If you aren't already doing this, a possible workaround in FM10 is to make sure
you save the files before updating the book.

The other day, I tried using track changes at the same time as our conditional
text scheme. FM10 seemed to cope with having one condition plus track changes
on a piece of text, but if I applied multiple conditions plus track changes, it
didn't always display the track changes correctly. It didn't crash but it
wasn't much use either. I was on a deadline so haven't investigated it
properly, or tried it on FM11. But my at-a-glance conclusion was that, yep,
conditional text and track changes are mutually exclusive for now.

Hopefully FM11 is better.

When I get time, I'll test it on FM11 and report the bug to Adobe if I find one.

Cheers
Rebecca

>>> Joseph Lorenzini  1/09/12 09:25 >>>
Hi All,

Until quite recently, I was the sole technical writer at my company. In the
last few months, a new writer was hired on. To review the edits he made to the
documentation, he turned on track text edits. In addition, he occasionally
applied conditional text to new text that he wrote. This meant that the green
TT conditional text is applied indicating new text AND conditional text is
applied to that text. Before he did this, the FrameMaker book would update and
save without a problem. I have had this book for years and it has rarely ever
experienced a crash or corruption. After he did this, each time I update the
book, FrameMaker would crash. The moment I removed the specific sections of
text that have TT edits and conditional text applied, the crashes no longer
occurred.

Has anyone seen anything like this or know how to work around this? Its really
frustrating and a shame because I think this means that conditional text and TT
edits are mutually exclusive and if you combine them you risk crashing
FrameMaker.

Here's some relevant information for debugging the issue:

--the write and I are on machines with almost identical specs: Win 7 Enterprise
64 bit, Solid State drives, 4 GB of RAM, Intel Core i5 CPU
--the writer and i are on TCS 3.5.
--we are both using Framemaker 10
--we do not work off a network share. Instead we use SVN.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

FrameMaker 11 in XML

2012-09-03 Thread Robert Leif
After reading the two interesting reviews of FrameMaker11, I still have two
questions.

1) Can I directly import elements from XML schemas, particularly, those

2) Can I format my XML with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)?

RE: Acrobat X Pro settings

2012-09-03 Thread Dov Isaacs
Chris,

There is no simple configuration file for Acrobat that can be copied between
systems or between releases of Acrobat on the same system.

Configuration settings and preferences for the most part are stored in various
registry settings (Windows) and plists (MacOS) that are not documented for the
public, can be very system specific, and are subject to change without any
notice.

As far as I know, there are no configuration settings that control whether how
a file that has "markups" (annotation comments?) will be saved.

When you are annotating a particular page of a PDF file, you are adding content
to the page, albeit simply annotation content and Acrobat considers the
annotated page as changed. If you simply save the document using Ctrl+S, the
changed pages' contents are added to the existing PDF file on disk and the page
table is modified to reflect the new copies of the changed pages. The "old"
pages remain on disk although the page table doesn't point to them anymore.
This method of saving the PDF file results in very fast updates and minimizes
the chances of data loss when saving minimal changes to a large PDF file.
However, the file size keeps on growing and noticeably so if your annotations
are very simple or few, but the pages are very complex with large amounts of
underlying content.

In lieu of save with Ctrl+S, if you use save as with Shift+Ctrl+S (not reduced
sized or optimized options), the entire PDF will be rewritten and the old,
obsolete versions of the pages you annotated will no longer occupy disk space.
This should solve your problem.

(In other words, there was nothing in the configuration of your laptop versus
desktop installations that caused the file size discrepancy, but either how you
saved the PDF file on one system versus another or the original page sizes of
the particular pages you annotated on one system versus another would cause the
file size discrepancy.)

Would anyone happen to know how to copy the Acrobat X Pro settings from a pc to
a laptop, all things being equal (same os, graphics display, etc)

The problem prompting this request is that the newly installed Acrobat X Pro on
the laptop does not save PDFs in the same way as the one on the pc.
Specifically, when I open a pdf and add markups to it in the laptop version,
the resulting saved file is huge. The same activity on the version installed on
the pc does not substantially increase the filesize.

Filesizes are an issue when working over a crowded network and I need to find a
way to make the marked-up pdfs much smaller without having to go through the
addition step of saving-as reduced file size. I want to be able to just save
the document in the same manner as was occurring on the pc.

I also noticed a very similar question was posted at the adobe forums last
summer and noone has replied to it. Hopefully someone here might know the
answer to get the same behavior out of a new Acrobat X Pro install as was
occurring on a different computer.

Bye bye FrameMaker & Adobe

2012-09-03 Thread Daniel Azuelos
  Hello to all Frame users.

I'm a User of FrameMaker since version 2,
I'm now saying you godbye because of fatal deception:
- Adobe abandonned FrameMaker on MacOS X;
- Adobe abandonned FrameMaker on Solaris;
- Adobe didn't provide any equivalent software replacement;
- Adobe is still unable to provide professionnal software running on
case sensitive filesystems (i.e. systems where you make the
difference between Adobe and adobe): ex. InDesign on MacOS X
doesn't install on a case sensitive file system.

For the ones who are using MacOS X and are involved in the fight against
any kind of malware, please consider using "case sensitive" file
systems as a safety rule.
You will make fail any ill conceived piece of software and most notably
any crapware.

Bye.

Re: FrameMaker vs InDesign

2012-09-03 Thread Robert Lauriston
I currently use FrameMaker to single-source PDF, online help (with
RoboHelp), Word (with MIF2Go), text with layout (with MIF2Go and
Word), and XHTML (with MIF2Go).

I'm pretty fed up with FrameMaker 10 but InDesign's not among the
practical alternatives. What I'd really like is a copy of FrameMaker
8.

Sure is a shame that we're stuck on this poky old Intel architecture
instead of those screaming-fast PowerPC systems. I think I still have
some of that Apple / IBM horseshit in my files.

FM8? 9? > FM10 errors

2012-09-03 Thread Robert Lauriston
I'm updating a project that was last updated with FM8 or 9.

Updating the book or saving as PDF fails with these errors:

Could not open [book]TOC.fm, because it uses unavailable fonts.
FrameMaker will create a new version of [book]TOC.fm. If you save this
new version, you will overwrite the existing file. To use your
existing file, close the new version without saving it. Then open and
save the existing file in Document format. Finally, update the book
again.
Could not open [chapter].fm, because it uses unavailable fonts.
FrameMaker did not update the generated files because of errors such
as: Couldn’t open [chapter].fm

If I have all the chapter files open, there are no errors and it works fine.

Is there some way to get rid of the errors? The "Remember Missing Font
Names" setting has no effect.

RE: FrameMaker 11 Review

2012-09-03 Thread Keith Soltys
Good review Alan. It's the first one I've seen that seems like the reviewer
actually used the program instead of just repeated a list of new features from
Adobe's Reviewer's Guide.

I'll be holding off on this one, I think. I don't use structured Frame, and
most of the improvements seem to be on that side. The object styles are a
genuine improvement, but I don't use enough graphics in my documents to make it
worthwhile upgrading just for that.

I am disappointed that they couldn't clean up some of the longstanding issues
with the interface. For example, let us increase the font size in marker dialog
box entry fields. Or provide alternatives to the standard marker text symbol -
expandable markers in place like IXgen has, for example. Or an outliner in
unstructured mode - Word has had this forever. Make the Authoring view work in
unstructured mode - Word has that too.

I could go on but you get the idea.

Re: Graphics import problems

2012-09-03 Thread Chris Coggins
Yes, there is, unless someone here can explain how to link to the graphics
stored on a Sharepoint 2007 server, which we've tried. The network links
disappear when the document is saved, forcing frame to look for the
graphics on the local drives, where they do not reside. If you know how to
make Sharepoint-linked graphics retain the network link location so that
they refresh every time the graphic has changed, I would appreciate the
guidance.

OT: Acrobat X Pro settings

2012-09-03 Thread Chris Coggins
Would anyone happen to know how to copy the Acrobat X Pro settings from a
pc to a laptop, all things being equal (same os, graphics display, etc)

The problem prompting this request is that the newly installed Acrobat X
Pro on the laptop does not save PDFs in the same way as the one on the pc.
Specifically, when I open a pdf and add markups to it in the laptop
version, the resulting saved file is huge. The same activity on the version
installed on the pc does not substantially increase the filesize.

Filesizes are an issue when working over a crowded network and I need to
find a way to make the marked-up pdfs much smaller without having to go
through the addition step of saving-as reduced file size. I want to be able
to just save the document in the same manner as was occurring on the pc.

I also noticed a very similar question was posted at the adobe forums last
summer and noone has replied to it. Hopefully someone here might know the
answer to get the same behavior out of a new Acrobat X Pro install as was
occurring on a different computer.

Thanks,
Chris

RE: How to reset Frame's Default Configuration - Resolved

2012-09-03 Thread Thomas, Lynn
Thank you to everyone who replied. Originally, when I opened the Variables
panel from the Special menu, selected my user variable then clicked the Edit
tool, the fields in the Add/Edit dialog box were completely blank. I was able
to add a new user variable just fine, but when I would open the new variable to
edit, again the fields were blank. That is what led me to believe that this
was something wrong in my Frame configuration. When I opened the Variables
panel via the Window menu however, (thank you Rick!) I am now able to edit
again. Is this a bug in Frame 9??

*All* user variables? How? Via Special > Variable, you'd have to do them one at
a time.

When you go to Special > Variable, and in the Variable dialog, select a user
variable and click Edit Definition, does the Edit User Variable dialog open?
IOW, what step in editing user variables are you unable to do?

That's because there isn't anything variable-related in maker.ini, and there's
no variable-related dumb change that you could have made to FM. Can you edit
the file? (It's possible to accidentally put a file into read-only mode, but
then you can't edit the text either.)

Whoa, you're way off base here -- mif2rtf.ini is a Mif2Go config file, not an
FM config file. It governs the conversion process when you use Mif2Go to export
an FM file to Word.

Re-installsheimer's disease, as Dov Isaacs calls it. Your problem isn't an FM
install/config problem. But I think you need to clarify exactly what steps you
take and what doesn't work before anyone can help you.

Did you refresh the display for the directory? That has always fixed

Bye bye FrameMaker & Adobe

2012-09-03 Thread Daniel Azuelos
  Hello to all Frame users.

I'm a User of FrameMaker since version 2,
I'm now saying you godbye because of fatal deception:
- Adobe abandonned FrameMaker on MacOS X;
- Adobe abandonned FrameMaker on Solaris;
- Adobe didn't provide any equivalent software replacement;

Bye.
