RE: Bookmarks don't stay set
Hi Gillian, What do you mean with they don't stay set? Do your paragraphs disappear in this dialog? Obviously not, if you delete them. I noticed that sometimes my PDFs are created without bookmarks. However, when I open the PDF setup dialog with the Bookmarks tab and just click OK, they are created correctly the next time. I did not notice any rule yet. My impression is that it's because the file was created with older FrameMaker versions. I run FrameMaker 10 on Windows 7, 32 bit. Re: save as... FM 8 Mif
It's starting to get weird, how often this subject keeps coming up. First, Maker 10 MIF should not have any problem opening up in Maker 8. So there's no obvious need to actually produce Maker 8 MIF. (Unless your work flow demands that the MIF actually be version 8.) Second, I have a free plugin on my site called SafetyMif... The idea is that whenever you perform a save operation, the plugin also saves a MIF version of your file. So you could open a book, hit Save All In Book, and you would have MIFs for all the files in the book. Then save the book, and you have a MIF for that. To easily open the files in Maker 8, you grab a dir with all the MIFs, and any referenced files. Then change the filename extension for all the doc files FROM .mif TO .fm. Then open the book, open all files in book, then save all files in book... For saving the files, you'll have to confirm overwriting the mif files (they all say .fm in their filenames) with binary. It so happens I also have a freeware tool for changing the filename extension. You can find this stuff at cudspan.net... Go into the professional pages, and look for freeware tools. The SafetyMif plugin is in the Maker 11 and 10 sections. The file extension tool is in the Java section. Good luck! cud ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: save as... FM 8 Mif
Thanks Nadine, I'm sure that mif 8, 9 and 10 are the same format regarding opening it in previous versions of Framemaker. In my case, however, I need a mif not to open it in FM but to use it in translation workflow in Trados. I'm not expert with Trados, but the agency say me that their specific version of Trados works fine only with mif 8 files. A customer of mine ask me to save a lot of FM 8 e FM 10 files, in MIF 8 format. Because this is optimized for translation workflow. I have FM 10 and I could save in MIF 10 or MIF 7 directly. I read about the possibility to save directly in FM8 or MIF8, using scripting. Could someone help me? It's about, perhaps, a free script? RE: Bookmarks don't stay set
I am having the same problem with FM10. My Acrobat version is 8.1. I go to create the PDF, set up which paragraphs I want as bookmarks, and create the PDF with the appropriate bookmarks in the file. I go back to the book later to recreate the PDF and my bookmark settings are lost and I have to recreate them. It's painful, given the awfulness of the PDF settings dialog (come on Adobe, surely you can at least give us multi-select!). It doesn't happen with all my books, but does with most of them. I haven't figured out a pattern yet. Are you selecting all the files in the book and then doing PDF Setup for all of them? That works fine for me. Re: Bookmarks Don't Stay Set
Reading between the lines, your problem may be where you are doing the settings. This now works similar to a standard printer setup. If you wish to change the default settings, you must do it from the printer control panel. If you wish to change the defaults for a specific job, you it from the print dialog prior to printing. These do not stick. For PDF settings from a FrameMaker book, to change the defaults, go to the book menu: FormatDocumentPDF Setup. Make your desired default settings, click set, and then SAVE THE BOOK. Now your chosen default settings will appear each time you Save As the PDF (or print/distill). If you make changes from the print dialog prior to printing, they will not take, even if you save the book. Next time you will again see the defaults. I think this is what is happening to you. I am not certain, but I think this change may have been made with Version 10. Previously the settings would stick if made from the print dialog box before printing, if you saved the book. On a slightly different topic, since we do not need color separations, spot printing, or any of the other higher end print operations, we find that Save As PDF works much better than print/distill. As mentioned recently, printing to a ps takes many times longer and bloats the file size. With Save As we do a pdf file from a 1000 plus page frame book in less than 2 minutes with no issues. In doing troublshooting for a large company, I find most pdf issues are caused by two errors: 1. Attempting to print to other than the Adobe PDF printer. Will not work for creating a pdf. Period. (I have seen a couple of threads in the forum recently that infer that this is what they are attempting) 2. Acrobat corruption triggered by attempting to simultaneously install multiple versions of Acrobat, including Pro vs Reader. This has been cleaned up some in the later installs, but I still see it frequently. You must fully uninstall all versions of Acrobat and then reinstall only the one version to avoid this issue. It's starting to get weird, how often this subject keeps coming up.? First, Maker 10 MIF should not have any problem opening up in Maker 8.? So there's no obvious need to actually produce Maker 8 MIF.? (Unless your work flow demands that the MIF actually be version 8.)? Second, I have a free plugin on my site called SafetyMif...? The idea is that whenever you perform a save operation, the plugin also saves a MIF version of your file.? So you could open a book, hit Save All In Book, and you would have MIFs for all the files in the book. Then save the book, and you have a MIF for that.?? To easily open the files in Maker 8, you grab a dir with all the MIFs, and any referenced files.? Then change the filename extension for all the doc files FROM .mif TO .fm.? Then open the book, open all files in book, then save all files in book...? For saving the files, you'll have to confirm overwriting the mif files (they all say .fm in their filenames) with binary.? It so happens I also have a freeware tool for changing the filename extension.? You can find this stuff at cudspan.net...? Go into the professional pages, and look for freeware tools.? Thanks, Chris! Based on what I see already, I think I will find the SafetyMIF tool quite useful, I believe! Bookmarks don't stay set
Need ideas - Moving large files from one folder to another without breaking links
Does anyone know of a program that will allow me to move several files to another folder without breaking links to graphics in other folders? We've imported graphics by using the "import by reference" option instead of copying the graphics to the document. We've done this because copying the graphics into the document bloats it. Our manuals have been created by several writers over the years. I have hundreds of files to move but haven't done it yet because of this issue. I could open each book file and FrameMaker files and just archive them but again, there are hundreds of these things to move. Any ideas are certainly appreciated. Have a great weekend! Are you selecting all the files in the book and then doing PDF Setup for all of them? That works fine for me. If the files don't all have the same PDF settings, then the book's PDF settings are a mix of all of them. My Language Service Provider (LSP) uses Trados and I use FM9 and there are no problems, so this isn't a Trados issue. It's likely an LSP issue - when I moved from MS Word 2003 to FM9, I simply told my LSP that they needed FM9 - which was brand new at the time. They didn't balk in the least. They just upgraded to FM9. Alison Craig? Keith, In FrameMaker, perform the following steps: 1. Open the book file. 2. Click Format, Document, PDF Setup. 3. Click the Bookmarks tab and make your bookmark changes. 4. Click Set. I'm not sure what you're saying. You're moving graphics files from one directory to another while leaving the FrameMaker files into which they're imported by reference in the same place? If so, are you moving all the files from one directory to another? When you do File > Save as PDF, any settings you change apply to that job only. To change the default settings for a book, select all the files in the book window, then select Format > Document > PDF Setup.
