Re: Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

2013-04-04 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I agree the bugs are annoying, but I really do appreciate the recently
added features of red underline for spelling mistakes and a history in
Find/Change dialog box. These features are time savers and make
FrameMaker more enjoyable to use. I also appreciate the built-in
scripting language.

My only gripe is the cost of an upgrade. I don't mind paying $400 every
few versions to upgrade, but $400 to upgrade a single version is too much.

Maxwell,

First, I wish to express appreciation for your sharing this
information on how to get by, given the partial demolition of a
feature which, to my knowledge, has worked just fine since the release
of FrameMaker version 1 … that’s version ONE … OH … EN … E … ONE.

Second, and particularly given much of the discussion here lately,
that you would even THINK of putting this in a “next release” fills me
with a sense of utter contempt and disgust. Have you not absorbed the
many, MANY comments from many, MANY people, both here and elsewhere,
complaining that releases 10 and 11 look much more like bug fix
releases then true version upgrades, and that the UI “improvements”
dumped upon us all in version 9 are not improvements at all, in many
ways, and break down constantly? Or are those comments just not part
of “we take your needs very seriously”?

I’ve gotta tell ya, it would be far, far more useful to most of us,
whose needs you take SO very seriously, if you (Adobe, not you
personally) would have your development team work on NOTHING but bug
fixes for a year or more … and I mean NOTHING but.

I feel unhappy writing such a harsh response, but this is a bug fix,
PERIOD. And so is almost everything else discussed here these days. We
don’t need another scripting language, we already have one that works
just fine. We don’t need “more UI improvements”, you all have
“improved” the UI far too much, far too miserably already. We don’t
need any more features … at least not NEARLY as much as we need the
core product to just plain WORK!!!

After all, is not the point of FrameMaker, in significant part, to
enable us to work more efficiently and productively than all those
Word users etc? Yes? No? Well, just in case the answer is “yes”,
here’s a news flash for you: When we have to spend countless hours
figuring out what your substitute development team has broken most
recently, improved efficiency and productivity are NOT the typical
outcomes! The same is true when we have to hire someone, not to
develop incremental functionality, but rather to develop a bug fix
that Adobe likely won’t provide, not even from here to eternity.

We need our shortcuts back. ALL of them. We need WHATEVER UI you send
our way to work … first time, every time, no matter what. If your
developers don’t know how to manage pods, then get rid of them and
create something simple … that works. (These are obviously just two
examples, not a working list.)

So …

Karen,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We do take your needs
very seriously, and have marked this issue for resolution in either a
patch or the next release of FrameMaker.

Although the values on line 95 of your maker.ini file will not
currently display in the zoom pop-up menu (only the first 4 values
will show), you may sequentially go through all of the listed zoom
values by holding down control while you move your mouse wheel forward
or backward.

Summary of tools you can use:

*EDITS TO MAKER.INI FILE:*

You can set the available zoom levels by editing line 95 of the
maker.ini file:

Zoom=25, 50, 80, 100, 120, 140, 150, 160, 200, 400

*Summary of useful keyboard shortcuts:*

Esc z i = In one zoom setting

Esc z o = Out one zoom setting

Esc z p = Fit Page in window

Esc z w = Fit window to page

Esc z f = Fit window to text frame

Esc zz = Zoom to 100 percent

Please note that you can also manually enter any percentage you wish
over the value that is displayed in the zoom menu. That zoom value
will be saved with the document.

We hope that these workarounds help you in short term while we look at
fixing this issue. This bug has been brought to the attention of Adobe
product marketing and engineering.

Custom FM-10/11 installation ruins ESTK functionality

2013-04-04 Thread Klaus Daube

I have discovered that ESTK does not work correctly if FM is not installed in the default location
C:\Program Files (x86). In my case the path for FM is
H:\Adobe\framemaker.11en\AdobeFrameMaker11

This somewhat redundant structure comes from the fact, that the custom installation does not allow a
final path, but insists to create its own directory AdobeFrameMakerxx.

If You have custom installed FM (10, 11) please confirm the following:

With File Scipts Run execute the script at

 $HOME\Samples\ScriptsAndUtilities\Hello World\FM_Hello_World.jsx

The script runs fine (any other of these samples also).
Open ESTK with File Scripts New Script
In ESTK open the file $HOME\Samples\ScriptsAndUtilities\Hello World\FM_Hello_World.jsx
Select Adobe FrameMaker 11 from the target drop down list.
Run the file with Debug Run (or F5 or clicking on the green triangle).
You get the error message

Canot execute script
Target Adobe FrameMaker 11 (11.0) provides no engine for debugging

Thanks for your help

BTW I have tested on my wife's PC: if FM ist installed in the default location, everything is fine.

Re: Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

2013-04-04 Thread Shmuel Wolfson

Elchanan,

I agree that the certain features, especially the pods feature, are not
worth the bugs. But the red underline feature makes me enjoy working
with it much more. I don't like to have worry about typos and
remembering to do spell checks.

I also agree that Abobe should supply a quality, bug-free product, since
it is quite expensive. If there is a bug, like the zoom level, Adobe
should fix the bugs in a free patch, not in a paid upgrade. I consider
the zoom level bug a major bug. I'm surprised they released it, and I'm
surprised they have not yet released a patch.

I have to agree. The complaints about the Stalinesque GUI and the

been totally ignored in two subsequent releases. It seems sadly clear
that Adobe's claim of listening to FM's end-users is lip service only.

It pains me deeply to have to admit that since upgrading to FM 9 and
10 (via TC$), my productivity has dropped significantly. No, it's still
not as bad as digging to China in Word's 9-level deep dialogs, but too
many steps have been taken in that direction. (Another example: it used
to be enough to change a graphic's dpi by clicking Set in the Graphics
Scaling dialog box. Now we also have to remember to find our way back
to the Object Properties pod and either click Apply or press tab
enough times to focus on that button and then press Enter. Slow,
cumbersome, retrograde improvement.)

I think Adobe's ultimate goal is to get everyone on a subscription plan.

I bought TCS4 with a 2-year maintenance plan to cover upgrades, but found

There were features I needed for Captivate, so I bought a TCS4 subscription
for $69 per month. (My other software was moved to secondary computers, so
it didn't go to waste.)

The key question to ask about these is do they support pdfMark PostScript
commands. This is the technology that FrameMaker uses to get bookmarks,

RE: Very slow paging in FM 10 in graphic-heavy files

2013-04-04 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Hello Tammy,

I imagine that someone has suggested this already but for speeding up temporary
navigation (e.g. if you need to zoom down to 25%), use View-Options and
uncheck graphics. This makes all graphics disappear. You can arrive at your
destination more swiftly and then reverse the process (e.g. check graphics)
so you can view the image as you write.

The keyboard short cut is ALT v o --

Other remote possibility of speed issues is if you have checked Save
FrameImage with Imported Graphics under Preferences.

I still have FM7.2 loaded (for testing comparison) on my personal WinXP
machine. I have noticed that even that older version of FM runs slower than it
did when new due to the many successive WinXP upgrades. I speculate that
there may be some connection. The PC environment has changed considerably since
FM7 and FM8 were released.

Thank you to everyone for all their insight into this issue. I have received a
myriad of onlist and offlist responses, and they range from others having
identical issues and not being able to resolve them to some resolution
depending on if you turned off graphics, pods, etc. One interesting comment
that was made to me offlist on a few occasions was that the problem seemed to
really come to the forefront after the last few rounds of Windows updates, and
that is truly something that I have noticed as well. A few people commented
that overall FM 10 response in almost every aspect was noticeably slowed after
this last round of updates and this was working local or w/ both the files and
graphics stored on a network. For now, I am going to keep all pods closed and
be somewhat thankful that I am pretty keyboard driven for commands (which harks
back to my days on older versions of FM and my age in general :)). I really do
need to keep the graphics displayed as I write for a variety of reasons, but if
that ultimately becomes the real showstopper, I will just have to work my way
around that as well. I am sooo tired of all these issues w/ newer versions
of FM. FM 7.2 and 8.0 were just as solid as a rock and quality just seems to be
going downhill exponentially w/ every subsequent release.

Thanks so much again everyone.

TVB

Similar problem in book with 36 chapters. Significant improvement in response
time attained by upgrading RAM from 4GB to 8GB. Though there is still room for
improvement.

Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

2013-04-04 Thread VLM TechSubs
Maxwell,

First, I wish to express appreciation for your sharing this information on how
to get by, given the partial demolition of a feature
which, to my knowledge, has worked just fine since the release of FrameMaker
version 1 . that's version ONE . OH . EN . E . ONE.

Second, and particularly given much of the discussion here lately, that you
would even THINK of putting this in a "next release"
fills me with a sense of utter contempt and disgust. Have you not absorbed the
many, MANY comments from many, MANY people, both here
and elsewhere, complaining that releases 10 and 11 look much more like bug fix
releases then true version upgrades, and that the UI
"improvements" dumped upon us all in version 9 are not improvements at all, in
many ways, and break down constantly? Or are those
comments just not part of "we take your needs very seriously"?

I've gotta tell ya, it would be far, far more useful to most of us, whose needs
you take SO very seriously, if you (Adobe, not you
personally) would have your development team work on NOTHING but bug fixes for
a year or more . and I mean NOTHING but.

I feel unhappy writing such a harsh response, but this is a bug fix, PERIOD.
And so is almost everything else discussed here these
days. We don't need another scripting language, we already have one that works
just fine. We don't need "more UI improvements", you
all have "improved" the UI far too much, far too miserably already. We don't
need any more features . at least not NEARLY as much as
we need the core product to just plain WORK!!!

After all, is not the point of FrameMaker, in significant part, to enable us to
work more efficiently and productively than all
those Word users etc? Yes? No? Well, just in case the answer is "yes", here's a
news flash for you: When we have to spend countless
hours figuring out what your substitute development team has broken most
recently, improved efficiency and productivity are NOT the
typical outcomes! The same is true when we have to hire someone, not to develop
incremental functionality, but rather to develop a
bug fix that Adobe likely won't provide, not even from here to eternity.

We need our shortcuts back. ALL of them. We need WHATEVER UI you send our way
to work . first time, every time, no matter what. If
your developers don't know how to manage pods, then get rid of them and create
something simple . that works. (These are obviously
just two examples, not a working list.)

So .

in the words of Capt. Picard, "Make it so." Evangelize INSIDE the company, do
whatever it takes, just get it done.

Kind regards,

Elchanan

Karen,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We do take your needs very
seriously, and have marked this issue for resolution in
either a patch or the next release of FrameMaker.

Although the values on line 95 of your maker.ini file will not currently
display in the zoom pop-up menu (only the first 4 values
will show), you may sequentially go through all of the listed zoom values by
holding down control while you move your mouse wheel
forward or backward.

Summary of tools you can use:

EDITS TO MAKER.INI FILE:
You can set the available zoom levels by editing line 95 of the maker.ini file:
Zoom=25, 50, 80, 100, 120, 140, 150, 160, 200, 400

Summary of useful keyboard shortcuts:
Esc z i = In one zoom setting
Esc z o = Out one zoom setting
Esc z p = Fit Page in window
Esc z w = Fit window to page
Esc z f= Fit window to text frame
Esc zz = Zoom to 100 percent

Please note that you can also manually enter any percentage you wish over the
value that is displayed in the zoom menu. That zoom
value will be saved with the document.

We hope that these workarounds help you in short term while we look at fixing
this issue. This bug has been brought to the attention
of Adobe product marketing and engineering.

2013-04-04 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I agree the bugs are annoying, but I really do appreciate the recently
added features of red underline for spelling mistakes and a history in
Find/Change dialog box. These features are time savers and make
FrameMaker more enjoyable to use. I also appreciate the built-in
scripting language.

My only gripe is the cost of an upgrade. I don't mind paying $400 every
few versions to upgrade, but $400 to upgrade a single version is too much.

"Or the next release?" A bug fix like this, which would return normal
functionality, should not require a paid upgrade. It should be put in a

Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

The complaints about the Stalinesque GUI and the
unworkable pod scheme began immediately on the release of FM 9, and have
been totally ignored in two subsequent releases. It seems sadly clear
that Adobe's claim of listening to FM's end-users is lip service only.

It pains me deeply to have to admit that since "upgrading" to FM 9 and
10 (via TC$), my productivity has dropped significantly. No, it's still
not as bad as "digging to China" in Word's 9-level deep dialogs, but too
many steps have been taken in that direction. (Another example: it used
to be enough to change a graphic's dpi by clicking "Set" in the Graphics
Scaling dialog box. Now we also have to remember to find our way back
to the Object Properties pod and either click "Apply" or press tab
enough times to focus on that button and then press Enter. Slow,
cumbersome, retrograde "improvement.")

Anyone looking for a writer?

2013-04-04 Thread jddav...@mmm.com
Good Morning Framers,

Is there anyone on the list in need of a Technical Writer/Online Help
Developer? I'm looking for an opportunity in the South East Michigan area
or a telecommute opportunity. I'm currently employed, but sadly my
company was acquired and they are planning on closing the Michigan office.
As I'm not willing to relocate to Texas, I have to find a new gig :-)

I have 20 years of experience and I've won regional and international STC
awards. FrameMaker and Web Works are my favorite tools, but I have
experience with other tools as well. I've designed templates, developed
style guidelines and processes, managed large documentation projects and
teams of writers, and of course, written and illustrated many software and
hardware manuals.

If anyone knows of an opportunity, please contact me off list at:
jdavis4docs at yahoo.com.

Thanks,
Jessica Davis

Looking at the FAQs for TCS4 Subscription model...

If we go with the subscription option, and an individual application in the
suite (Illustrator, for example) has a major dot release a few months before
TCS, would we receive the dot release, or have to wait until TCS does its dot
release?

I think Adobe's ultimate goal is to get everyone on a subscription plan.

I bought TCS4 with a 2-year maintenance plan to cover upgrades, but found
out that it did not cover new features released to subscription or ASA
plans.
There were features I needed for Captivate, so I bought a TCS4 subscription
for $69 per month. (My other software was moved to secondary computers, so
it didn't go to waste.)

TCS4 question - individual app updates

2013-04-04 Thread Matt Sullivan
You know, Carla, that's a great question!

I believe I got Acrobat 11 on the PC because TCS 4 came out with an incremental
update, but I didn't get it on the Mac because CS6 didn't have a similar
incremental update.

You can reasonably expect TCS to rev a point release (like 4.1) if Illustrator
or Acrobat are released, but there's no guarantee of such an update.

As a harbinger of things to come: I just got notified that the new and renewal
CS Master Suite contracts will no longer be available for sale.

They'll honor existing contracts, but then it's on to the subscription plan if
I want to license a CS Suite. After expiration of my current plan, I'll have to
gauge the financial impact of keeping most of that software around "just in
case."

Only if you have enough "points" to do so - as evidenced by the recent thread I
wrote about, they are _not_ going to give me a renewal on my last 2 year Update
Plan, since it is only for 1 license.

All small number of users (individual and business) are thus shut out with
overpricing - I think Adobe's ultimate goal is to get them to switch to some
other tool.

PDF and Alternatives to Acrobat [WAS Re: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?]

2013-04-04 Thread Rick Quatro
The key question to ask about these is do they support pdfMark PostScript
commands. This is the technology that FrameMaker uses to get bookmarks,
links, etc. in their PDFs. If you can't get these from the other tools, it
would be a serious limitation in my opinion.

Thanks for the list! It will help me during my evaluations soon. An addition
to your list:

"easyPDF" from BCL Technologies ($29.95)
http://www.pdfonline.com/easypdf/pdf-printer/

And I think, but not sure, that Pdf995 costs ($9.95) to get "without a
sponsor page" ... all their tools cost this, hence the "995" in the name. :)
Their "PdfEdit995" and "PdfSignature995" products adds the capability to add
combine/extract pages, encryption, etc.

Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

2013-04-04 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
E:
You can set the available zoom levels by editing line 95 of the maker.ini file:
Zoom=25, 50, 80, 100, 120, 140, 150, 160, 200, 400

That zoom value will be saved with
the document.

We hope that these workarounds help you in short term while we look at fixing
this issue. This bug has been brought to the attention of Adobe product
marketing and engineering.

percentage/drop-down box--you know, the one that doesn't even look like an

every time I needed to change zoom level, I'd have the slowest workflow on the
planet.

Seriously, are users expected to modify an .ini file just to set zoom-level
settings? (I understand from Shmuel's tip on Rocky Mountain Training's blog
that it's maker.ini line 95.) Most technical writers/editors are not
programmers and are neither comfortable nor familiar with modifying application
files this way. Seems dangerous for workgroups. Isn't that what user interfaces
are for?

Very slow paging in FM 10 in graphic-heavy files

2013-04-04 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Hello Tammy,

I imagine that someone has suggested this already but for speeding up temporary
navigation (e.g. if you need to zoom down to 25%), use View->Options and
"uncheck" graphics. This makes all graphics disappear. You can arrive at your
destination more swiftly and then reverse the process (e.g. "check" graphics)
so you can view the image as you write.

The keyboard short cut is ALT v o --

Other remote possibility of speed issues is if you have checked "Save
FrameImage with Imported Graphics" under Preferences.

I still have FM7.2 loaded (for testing comparison) on my personal WinXP
machine. I have noticed that even that older version of FM runs slower than it
did "when new" due to the many successive WinXP upgrades. I speculate that
there may be some connection. The PC environment has changed considerably since
FM7 and FM8 were released.

Subject: RE: Very slow paging in FM 10 in graphic-heavy files

TVB

FM 11.0 / Win 7, 32-bit / Intel i3 cpu

Similar problem in book with 36 chapters. Significant improvement in response
time attained by upgrading RAM from 4GB to 8GB. Though there is still room for
improvement.
