FM and Distiller distort Visio drawing

Roman - it might not be FrameMaker. You mention PNG. PNG is (presumably)
created via an export filter from Visio. Historically, we have had endless
problems with Visio export filters to 'foreign' (i.e. non-Microsoft) formats
producing non-faithful reproductions of images that look correct in Visio. So
my suggestion is to first check that your graphic is not being distorted by the
export process from Visio before you start looking for problems in the
FrameMaker/Distiller/PDF domain. I cannot for sure state that this is the
problem in your case, but you should check if first before looking for issues
outside of Visio.

You also mention FrameMaker's 'Save as PDF' feature. This also, historically,
has been a cause of problems, although they may have been fixed in your version
of FrameMaker (which you don't mention). So I suggest you also try saving to
.ps and distilling separately, if you have a full version of Acrobat.

Yeah, probably! ☺

Chris Despoupolis's (sp?) TocBreaker might be of use. You'd have to insert
your soft returns once and run TocBreaker to save the information. After
that, you run TocBreaker after regenerating. (http://cudspan.net/) It works
with all generated lists.

You can use Google to search the archives by specifying "site:
www.framerusers.org"

FM and Distiller distort Visio drawing

2013-06-03 Thread Robert Lauriston
I don't know about transparency, but this is what works well for me:

In Visio, use File > Page Setup > Page Size > "Size to fit drawing
contents" to eliminate unused space around the drawing, then File >
Save As > Enhanced Metafile (*.emf).

In FrameMaker, import the .emf file by reference.

For single-source motives I don't want multiple paragraph tags or a

Any documentation that includes a statement like, "To let the FrameMaker

Re: The Problem with Long Titles in Generated Lists

2013-06-03 Thread Jerilynne Knight
Another way I've done this is to insert at least 3 tab characters (not tab
stops) before the page number. Maybe that will give you a bit of automation
for those long entries.

Re: The Problem with Long Titles in Generated Lists

2013-06-03 Thread Lin Sims
Chris Despoupolis's (sp?) TocBreaker might be of use. You'd have to insert
your soft returns once and run TocBreaker to save the information. After
that, you run TocBreaker after regenerating. (http://cudspan.net/) It works
with all generated lists.

You can use Google to search the archives by specifying "site:
www.framerusers.org"

FM and Distiller distort Visio drawing

2013-06-03 Thread Roman Banks
Hi everybody,

I have a simple Visio drawing containing basic Visio shapes (e.g., a rectangle
with a green background). I inserted a PNG (an icon with a transparent
background) via Insert-->Picture-->From File and put it on top of the
rectangle. So far, everything looked perfect. However, when I embedded the
Visio drawing in Framemaker (without resizing), the icon became fuzzy and
distorted. When I opened the Visio from Framemaker - everything looked fine
again, but when I closed it, the icon had a stroke ;-). I wasn't too concerned
with that as I've seen many times that Framemaker distorts images, but when
converted to PDF, they look OK again. However, it wasn't the case this time.

When I converted the FM file to PDF (File --> Save as PDF), the icon itself
looked OK, BUT it was surrounded by a white background! In the Distiller
settings, I deselected the "CMYK to RGB" option, and generated the PDF again --
the white background disappeared, but the icon looked fuzzy and distorted as in
Framemaker.

Do you have any ideas what makes FM and Distiller distort the drawing, and how
to solve this problem?

TIA!!!

As a 'quick and dirty' method, have you tried a search/replace on a MIF version
of the file(s)? (Caveat: I have not tried this, but in MIF an xref contains the
destination file name in the XRefSrcFile tag, so it should work.)

The Problem with Long Titles in Generated Lists

2013-06-03 Thread Jay Mahler
I'm sure you've all had the problem with TOCs, LOTs, LOFs, and even indexes.
When the title reaches the end of the line (or too many index entries), the tab
character that should position the page number at right aligned tab doesn't
work, and the page number appears left justified on the second line with or
without continued text. I've always gone through and manually fixed the issue
by inserting soft returns after the lists are generated, but I have a client
with a huge document and LOTs and LOFs that are 20 pages each. Has anyone
figured out an automated way to fix this problem? My experiments haven't turned
up a solution.

Also, since I'm sure this isn't the first time someone has asked this question,
I wanted to search old posts and the archives. I can't figure out how to do
that other than looking at each month manually. Is there a search tool
available somewhere?

Length of text flow names reduced

2013-06-03 Thread info . dkpress
Dear all,

FM 11 has another quite disturbing new feature: The length of the name of a
textflow is reduced to the size of the window (18 characters with numbers;
12 characters when inserting big "M"). In Version 9 I could insert any
amount of characters in this field. The old names are still visible in full
length but new text flows names can't have more characters.

If you only use A, B, C, D its not a problem. But I reuse safety notes as
named text flows. The naming is quite tough with 12 characters.

cid:image005.jpg@01CE5314.105E2620

Maybe a task for debugging or is it a new feature?!

With best regards
