Re: Structured FrameMaker Developer's Guide for FM 11?

2013-10-17 Thread Robert Lauriston
What Structured FrameMaker documentation Adobe has created is
scattered in various places, but there are also gaping holes.

The FM11 help says "see the online manual, Developing Structured
Applications with Adobe FrameMaker 9," so I think that's an indication
that they have not updated it.

Interim tables of contents

2013-10-17 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Alastair

I just read this, have been busy lately. In case you're still looking for an
answer, it's easy: just open the chapter, go to Special > Table of Contents. If
it asks whether you want to generate a Standalone TOC, say yes. Create the TOC
with the desired set of paragraph tags. Then save the resulting TOC file and
import it as a text inset at the start of your chapter.

To update it, create the TOC again, as above, and then update the text inset.

If you've got any questions, let me know.

Cheers
Rebecca

Is there any way of generating an interim table of contents in a document?

For example, if I have a large chapter, generating a list of the chapter
headings at the start of the chapter.

Structured FrameMaker Developer's Guide for FM 11?

2013-10-17 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Does anyone know if there's an updated version of the Structured FrameMaker
Developer's Guide or reference guide available somewhere that goes beyond FM9?
The FrameMaker 11 help mentions: For more information, see the online manual,
Developing Structured Applications with Adobe FrameMaker on the Adobe
website,www.adobe.com/go/lr_FrameMaker_support_en. But that only shows the home
page for help.

There may be not that many changes, but it doesn't feel very professional to
point my client to the FM9 manuals.

Any other resources available?

Disconnected Frame and TOC

2013-10-17 Thread Karen Robbins
Hi Framers,

A disconnected text frame containing a TOC-level heading appears in the TOC
under the previous chapter instead of its own. The previous chapter used to
be part of this chapter; the disconnected frame was always disconnected
from the A flow (and its heading always appeared in the proper place).

The A flow is a two-column format.

The disconnected frame isn't part of the A flow because it is a full-width
single column and appears at the bottom of the page. It contains a heading
and body text. Several smaller text frames and some graphic lines overlap
it (can be grouped or ungrouped if that makes any difference).

Has the disconnected frame somehow retained a connection to the content of
previous chapter? How do I remove that, or otherwise get this heading to
appear correctly in the TOC?

Thanks,
Karen

Engineers as authors

You can lock it down. We've done something similar where I work--created a

RE: How to purge unwanted fonts from Reference Pages?

2013-10-17 Thread Davis, David
Ah, thanks for the tip! I hadn't actually spotted the Fonts pod yet.
( /Grumbles/ if Adobe provided a proper printed manual these days, then I might
be able to find these things more easily! :) )

The Fonts pod seems to have sorted things for me.

One the downside, I found it a bit ambiguous what it was doing - I wanted to
make sure it was changing the *paragraph styles*, not applying ad-hoc font
overrides to everything? (As that would be crazy, right?) but I'm
optimistically assuming it was doing the former.

One great thing, though, was that it lists all those instances of phantom fonts
where, obtusely, FrameMaker insists they are being "used" in the document, but,
tellingly, the Font pod can't show any instance of where they are being used.
(This is because they aren't, er, being used... )
It appears to be a great tool for purging this debris!

Hi David,

In FrameMaker 11 you can open the Fonts pod (via the View menu).
Then select the font which you have problems with and click on the
Replace icon. Select a font which you want to use instead.

headings at the start of the chapter.

Re: Shortcut keys for rotate clockwise/counter-clockwise

2013-10-17 Thread Anne Magee

I have several frame docs with landscape master pages, and I don't
have to rotate the pages to edit the text. (I'm assuming you want
the text to run along the long edge of the paper?) What I do:

1. Add a new master page
2. Use Format > Customize Layout > Rotate Page {clockwise or
counter-clockwise}
3. Add the text frames.

The main frame should be left as is, the header and footer frames
should be rotated.

You can then apply this master page like any other.

The one trick is that for some reason, Frame leaves the original
portrait text frame on the page even after the master page has been
applied. You have to fiddle around to select it and delete it and
make sure your text goes into the landscape text frame. (If both
frames are the same size, it's hard to tell which is which, which is
why I said "fiddle") If you apply the landscape master page to
multiple existing pages, you'll have to do that to all of them. If
you are adding new content, you just have to do it to the first; new
pages will use the correct text frame.

I've got Framemaker 9 but I've done this since Frame 5.

If I've misunderstood your problem, sorry.

Anne

Thanks
for the advice, everyone, but with the help of Klaus
Mueller, I got the shortcut keys I’m looking for. Here’s a
copy of part of the email he sent me:

  ■
  Generally,
you can find the default shortcuts for FM commands in the
config

files "\fminit\configui\cmds.cfg" or
"\fminit\configui\wincmds.cfg".

  ■
  The
shortcuts for those 2 commands are (in English FM versions):

  –
  Graphics:
• Rotate 90 Degrees Clockwise: Esc g+
• Rotate 90 Degrees Counterclockwise: Esc g-

  –
  Page:
  •
  Rotate
Page Clockwise: Esc pO
  •
  Rotate
Page Counterclockwise: Esc po

He’s
got a FrameScript script called “Report Commands” that
generates a list of shortcut definitions for whatever
FrameMaker you have installed, so if you have custom ones,
it’ll list those, too.

I
tried the rotate page ones and they work.

Hello
Fei Min,
you
are probably right with presuming that there is no way to
apply the "rotate page" command to more that just the actual
page.
I could not find any hint about this.
Of
course you could: Remap the command to a different, shorter
shortcut. Or: Add the command to a menu.
All this would not solve your problem, I think.

a)
One way would be to write a short program (e.g. with
framescript or with Extendscript) that lets you enter the
relevant pages and either rotates them this way or back.
(Unfortunately I am no help in writing this tool.)
b)
I thing the best approach is to work with a rotated master
page, as was already mentioned:
You
should define one new master page with landscape orientation
and a main text frame in it in the appropriate size, in a
comfortable view for editing. It is not necessary to add
headers and footers unless these were also continuous
textflows. Nor is it necessary to create different left and
right pages, as you would only use the page temporariliy.
As
you are obviously working with structured applications, this
new page should be applied to your template, so that it
becomes available in each document that you generate.
This
done, you can apply the master page to the page range where
the index is located with a single command (in the master
page menu). Then you would edit the content. The you would
reapply the master pages that are intended to be used here.
Probably you have to distinguish between right and left
pages, so this time you would need two actions to get back
to the original format.

Thanks,

Vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,

Wim Hooghwinkel

How to purge unwanted fonts from Reference Pages?

David

Hi David,

In FrameMaker 11 you can open the Fonts pod (via the View menu).
Then select the font which you have problems with and click on the
Replace icon. Select a font which you want to use instead.

Best regards

Winfried
