Re: search with RegExp RE: Now OT, I suppose. RE: Adobe pricing policies

2014-01-30 Thread Scott Prentice

By "included files" do you mean text insets?

If so .. I don't believe that a search will find anything in an inset
(certainly would be nice). Once way you can do that is to create a
special book that you use for authoring, which is different than the one
you use to create PDFs from. Add your insets to this "authoring" book,
then you can do a search across the book, and it'll find content in the
insets.

Hmm .. it would be fairly simple to create an ExtendScript that
temporarily "unlocked" all insets in a document. You could do the
unlock, search, then lock it once you've located the inset. You'd want
to be careful, but it should work.

Cheers,

...scott

pdf of mac FM shortcut keys guide

2014-01-30 Thread Craig Ede
Does anyone have a copy of the old FrameMaker guide for Macintosh shortcut keys
they could send me in PDF format? It was a laminated folded insert that was
included with the Macintosh version of FrameMaker years ago. Mine was from
around FM5 or so.

Thanks.

Hey, Max, do the Esc shortcuts still work? Sometime around FM9, some of them
(some of the table cursor movement ones) stopped working. I wish that could be
fixed, too, and expanded to add the new features and commands. They're VERY
useful for fast access to a lot of the submenus.

Those commands should work. You might also try the shortcuts Control-M for para

Make sure that you did not use Edit->Preferences and change your user interface
to "FrameMaker XML Editor" ... which does make those menus go away.

I was humming along very nicely with one of those tutorials until I hit a major
snag. I was supposd to do something with the paragraph designer, and neither
the tutorial nor the FM 12 User Guide was very clear on how to get to it. I
searched on my own, and found the menu option Format -> Paragraph -> Designer,
which looked like what I should select. So I selected it and -- nothing
happened. At least, nothing appeared that I could recognize as the Paragraph
Designer. The same thing happened with the character designer. So either I'm
making some kind of error or something's wrong with my copy of FM. I hope it's
my error and you can tell me how to correct it.

Thanks for your feedback and bringing this issue to our attention. We are

Hi Framers,

I discovered a bug with the newly released FrameMaker 12. If you Find/Change
with Regular Expressions checked, any literal replacement text is always
inserted as Times New Roman 12 point, regardless of the paragraph it is in.
This is a pretty serious bug.

IMHO, Microtype addons for Framemaker are great time savers (and headache

Well, its all fine with SEARCH with Regex in FM-12.

However, there is a severe bug in REPLACE with Regeg: any constant part in
the replacement (e.g. the words in
gugus $1 nonsense
is inserted in 12pt Times New Roman, not observing any character format in
the target text!

You can add or modify any shortcut you want.
In the folder FrameMaker\fminit\configui you can find a couple of files that
contain all of the shortcuts.
The instructions are no longer included with newer versions of FrameMaker. IIRC
Frame 7 included a PDF with instructions.

You can either modify the existing files, or (better) create a file named
customui.cfg

This should contain entries in the vein of:

'CharacterDefaultPgfFont' is a string you can find in the other .cfg files.
Find the string for the command you want to modify, and create a line in
customui.cfg.

;the semicolon indicates a comment
modifier keys: + for Shift, ^ for Control, ~ for Alt, \ for Esc

RECORDING of "What's new in FrameMaker 12" webinar from Jan 28 with time chart

2014-01-30 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Yesterday we had huge turnout at our first FrameMaker 12 webinar, which covered
many significant new features. The session is 2 hours and 15 minutes long. I am
posting info on how to access the recording and also some time stops you can
fast forward to for specific features and areas that interest you the most.

Here is the link to the recording: http://adobe.ly/1ibB3Ku
(use your Adobe.com account credentials to log-in ... once you have you won't
need to log-in again as long as browser instance is running.) If you are using
Chrome, I recommend that you clear your cache and restart Chrome before viewing.

Here are some key "time stop" points that will take you to major highlights of
the presentation:

* 1 hour 10 min = How to publish from FM12 to EPUB, HTML5
RESPONSIVE LAYOUT and more
(in answer to many questions, this is FrameMaker 12 by itself, with no
plug-ins, and no assistance from RoboHelp 11 or Tech Comm Suite 5!)
* 1 hour 36 min = Structure and FrameMaker XML Author 12
* 1 hour 50 min = MathML equations, including XML code view to edit
* 1 hour 53 min = improved XML white space handling
* 1 hour 57 min = Preview DITAMAP topic content
* 12 min = user interface enhancements
* 25 minutes = Regular Expressions used in Find/Change
(e.g. reverse date format)
* 28 min 44 sec = Generate QR code
* 30 min 28 sec = background color on text level and boxed/colored
paragraphs
* 32 min 30 sec = improved Conditional Text control, new UI and
complex expressions
* 38 min 44 sec = enhanced Smart Catalogs with search/filter to
narrow choices
* 46 min = improved collaborative workflow with Dropbox integration
and improved PDF review

Many people emailed me after the webinar asking about our 40% discount offer.
For a limited time, all existing customers of Adobe Technical Communication
Suite, Adobe FrameMaker and Adobe RoboHelp are eligible to take advantage of
this limited period promotional offer to purchase subscription licenses of
Adobe Technical Communication Suite 5 at 40% off for an entire year. This would
allow you to subscribe to the entire Tech Comm Suite 5 (FrameMaker 12, RoboHelp
11, Captivate 7, Acrobat Pro XI and Presenter 8) for only $29.99 per month, the
same subscription price as FrameMaker. Subscriptions are now a 1 year
commitment, though you are billed monthly. Perpetual (boxed DVD) licenses are
still available.

My question was ignored many times during the webinar. Do the search
enhancements include finding matches in included files? Currently, the only way
I can search for strings in my books that single-source included files is to
generate a
 PDF and search in it.

Max, maybe you can schedule a webinar by Shlomo highlighting this use of that
feature.

Re: Can't get to either the Paragraph Designer or Character Designer

2014-01-30 Thread Robert Lauriston
The new UI layered on top of the ancient one in FM9 introduced the
problem David is encountering where dialogs and windows open behind
other UI elements. It also broke many of the keyboard shortcuts I had
relied on for years. I posted a list:

Help with book folders and groups in structured docs

2014-01-30 Thread Mike
I am interested in the folder and group functionality for books, but cannot
seem to get it to work. If I try to put topics in individual files in
folders or groups, it seems to break the structure. I put the Chapter
element in the first file of a folder or group, then put the Topic elements
in files below that file. It looks like Frame cannot handle this situation.

If that is the case, I guess I don't see the benefit or purpose of folders
and groups in books.

Thanks,

RE: SGML Parser Error

2014-01-30 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Tino,

Thanks for the helpful information. I will check it out and see if this is the
problem.

Hi Rick,

one major difference between SGML and XML is that SGML is not case-sensitiv
regarding the names of elements or attributes (and name tokens).

An SGML application would treat these elements as equal or attributes/name
tokens as duplicates, although they are not meant to be. Similar names have to
be changed to unique values.

I do not well remember the details, but this posting here:

http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-html/1994Nov/0073.html

states that predefined attribute values also have to be unique.

So you should check these values as well.

Searching for "name token define SGML" I also found:
http://books.google.de/books?id=OyJHFJsnh10C

&pg=PA120&lpg=PA120&dq=name+token+define+SGML&source=bl&ots=DGsVy8uaeB&sig=wj3Xn_BOiUiuxhGPQ5zDogevNog&hl=de&sa=X&ei=K4PqUr7fLo7YsgaG-IGAAw&ved=0CGAQ6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=name%20token%20define%20SGML&f=false

Best regards - Tino H. Haida, Berlin

Rick Quatro:

Hi Framers,

I am saving a document to XML using an SGML application. I am getting the
following Console message:

Group token (2): duplicate name or name token (N) ignored.

Any directions on what might be wrong would be appreciated. Thanks.
