Re: adjusting an underline (underscore)

2014-05-01 Thread Les Smalley
The only simple option in FM is to change from a regular underline to a numeric
underline - this will change the spacing (slightly) but also change the line
weight.  Neither underlining style is adjustable, so you will have to test to
see if you like the result.

As others have said, there are a few more complex work-arounds you can use, but
these definitely increase the long-term maintenance effort for the document(s).

Can an underline be adjusted to increase the space between the underline and

Next obvious question: If the answer is yes, then how to do it?

cross reference crash postscript

2014-05-01 Thread Fred Wersan
Xrefs work OK in regular FrameMaker. The problem is in Structured Frame,
which of course, is what I am using. Uninstalling Framescript doesn't
seem to make a difference. Saving a file as MIF and then opening it
still crashes.

Re: cross reference crash postscript

2014-05-01 Thread Lise Bible
Fred,
I am also running Frame 8 on Win 7 (but unstructured). I have not had your
cross-reference crashing problem, but I did have issues when I first moved
to my new computer--I did have crashing issues, but I don't know that there
was any consistent cause.
Once I got myself fully patched, though, it's been (mostly) fine.
So that would be my only suggestion. (I was re-installing Frame 8 from CD
(DVD? don't remember) so there had been a few patches after that initial
release.)
I'm at Version 8.0p277

Use the numeric underline instead of the regular underline—this will leave some

I have a problem where cross-refs from one FM chapter to another chapter
in the same book are not being turned into links in the RH output.

In the FM files, I verified all the links are fine - no broken cross-refs.
When I generate a PDF from the FM book, all the cross-refs work.

After updating the files in RH, the file Design view shows the links with
the link text in blue and underlined, but there's no Hyperlink properties
on the right-click menu, and HTML view shows that it's missing the href that
 specifies the link destination.

There is a corresponding Japanese version for the documents and the same
is happening there as well making me think it's more likely in FM than in
 RH.

 Somewhere there is either

- a setting telling RH not to include the link destination for some
links, or
- a setting in FM telling it not to export the link destination for
links to other FM files

Any ideas where this might be?

Also - any suggestions about what I could copy from another project to fix
 this?

Help please - this was due yesterday ...

Re: FM 12 Kindle Page Breaks

2014-05-01 Thread Amit Jha
Hi Art_Campbell

You can do that using pagination in conversion settings.
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS2d2a17056e2191985844af1a142be0be50b-7ffc.html

In publish pod (File - Publish)

 1. Go to Edit settings by clicking on settings button
 2. Go to conversion setting
 3. Select the FM Para tag (where you want to have page break)
 4. Check pagination
 5. Click on Save close and publish

You can also do the Special Page Break operation as local override.

Please let us know if it is not working for you.

Thanks

Unfortunately this CSS setting isn't honored by most readers ..
Kindles are typically worse in this regard than EPUB readers.

The only guaranteed way to get a page break is to force the content
into a separate content file in the package. You should be able to do
this by starting a new FM file for each place you want a page break. I
assume you're generating the MOBI from a FM book?

  Hi Art,

I don't know if there is a way to do this directly from FM12 to mobi.
If you go to Epub, you can modify the CSS to give you page breaks then
convert the Epub to mobi. There are two CSS declarations that you can try:

 page-break-before: always;

 or

 page-break-after: always;

You will probably use the first one with the CSS for your headers that
you want to force page breaks on. Please let me know if you have any
questions or comments. Thank you very much.

Re: adjusting an underline (underscore)

2014-05-01 Thread Urszula Witherell
Although using a table cell as a formatting feature is very common in
FrameMaker, it is only acceptable for publications printed on paper.
If a document is exported to online formats, such as PDF or HTML serious issues
appear. HTML code will be converted to an HTML table, with a full set of table
tags. PDF files will be rendered not accessible according to Section 508
Compliance standards, since table should only be used as data

Your best solution for controlling a line below a paragraph, that may resemble
an underline, is to create a line on a Reference Page, then update or create a
Paragraph Format Tag that refers to that line in Below Pgf, Advanced
properties in the Paragraph Designer.

FM does not give you any direct control over the position, weight or type of the
line in an underline.

Best regards,
Urszula

I don't know any way to adjust the spacing but if you want an
underline that's further away from the text, you can use the numeric
underline. It's available from the character designer and the font

Please let me know if you are available for sporadic work. I need someone that
already has Frame and Indesign. This will be long term, but no guarantees on
how much work. It is as needed mostly editing , updates, and recreation.

Local to Maryland is great but all remote is fine too.

Trying out CHM generation in Frame12

2014-05-01 Thread Davis, David
Hello frameusers.
This week I've been playing with the 30 day trial of FrameMaker 12.

Most of my work at the moment has been generating HTML Help: my existing
workflow has been with TechComm Suite 4, authoring in Frame 11, linking the
books into RoboHelp 10 and generating CHMs from there.
I've found that workflow a bit cumbersome, and struggled quite a bit to get my
CHM files looking the same as my Frame source
(although I mostly got there in the end, not least with some help from others
on this list...)

I'm trying to see whether I could just use Frame 12 instead, and forget about
RoboHelp and TechComm Suite. (As I don't need the multiplicity of output
formats the latter can produce.)

The dialog boxes for configuring CHM output from Frame 12 look very familiar (
:) yes, they're straight out of RoboHelp) and I was quickly and easily able to
achieve about 95% of what I'd been doing in TCS4.

The only 'gotcha' I have encountered is this:
Creating a CHM from Frame12 still ignores anything that was on a Master Page or
Reference Page - so any 'boilerplate' graphics etc get ditched.
In TCS4, I'd instead used RoboHelp Master Pages to append a boilerplate
footer to each CHM topic.
Am I right that I can't do this with Frame12 alone? Or is there some
workaround I'm overlooking?
(Sadly I don't think I can do without this feature, so if it can't be done in
Frame12 alone I'll need to stick with TCS4... TCS5 is no good as it doesn't
have Illustrator, as many of you have already noted..)

Also, the Glossary feature in Frame12 seems to be broken - I ought to be able
to include GlossaryTerm markers on words, and have the marker text displayed
in the CHM as tooltips, pop-ups, etc. It doesn't appear to work though (other
people have confirmed the same issue on the Adobe Forums). Has anyone here
tried this successfully?

David
