Localization Process with FrameMaker 10

2012-09-29 Thread Anton David

Hi Alison,

Your workflow description is comprehensive!!
One thing I have to add:
You must make sure Translation memory is provided in an open format
(TMX)otherwise you are stuck to same vendor or to same tool.

Joseph:

1. When you talk about the "translator" do you mean a professional at
an LSP (Language Service Provider) or someone in-house who speaks/writes
Chinese, so you use him/her? If the latter, I don't recommend it. The
ability to speak/write a language does not a translator make. Following that
logic, anyone who speaks/writes English, can be an English technical writer
- and we all know that isn't true.

2. This is my process for an initial translation. Subsequent
translations are almost identical but some things like creating Variable
files are already done (note that my manuals are conditionalized so there
are actually 5 manuals in one unstructured FM book files (22 separate FM
files in this book):

a. Complete manuals

b. Log completed manual into VSS

c. Create a completed manual English Master file folder(s) - different
from your working folder(s)

d. Accept all Track Changes

e. Create all final PDFs and release English manuals

f. Keep a copy, by product/condition, of all finished FM files that are
used to create each PDF

g. Create a new folder(s) for translation (I do this by language as we
translate into 7 different languages at the moment - we have done up to 17)

h. Copy a writable set of English Master files into the Simplified
Chinese translation folder(s)

i. Create Variable files for translation files

j. Send files to LSP for quote (including request for creation of
translation Glossary before 1st translation begins. It's also best to have
this proofed by an in-country expert before beginning the actual translation
job.)

k. Authorize translation based on quote

l. When the job is finished, always get a copy of the Glossary and
new/updated Translation Memory (TM) so you can change LSPs at your
discretion.

m.When you do your 2nd and subsequent rounds of translation, the LSP
will process the new FM files and the TM with professional tools (like
TRADOS) to ensure that exact matches, fuzzy matches and repetitions are
factored into the price and job cycle, ensuring that only new or edited text
needs to be translated.

This is a quick overview of my process. Some might find steps c and f-h a
bit of overkill, but as I work with Medical Devices, we have an internal ISO
release process. We are also constantly applying to new countries for
Regulatory approval to sell our systems. I have learned the hard way that if
I cannot recreate on-demand, an exact copy of a specific manual type/release
- sometimes with new document numbers and languages codes - then things get
extremely difficult for me. I also need to be able to recreate translated
manuals with specific changes required by Regulatory bodies (the SFDA in the
People's Republic of China is particularly demanding)

Hope this helps,

Alison

R: FrameScript Run Error

2012-01-11 Thread Anton David
Hi Rick,

DocUtils.fsl is where it should be.
In FrameScript Search Path I found the path to SysScripts and to
SampleScripts. I added C:\Programmi\ElmSoft\FrameScript5_70 but it I got the
same error.

However your instructions put me on the right path. The missing path was the
one including DocUtils.fsl. I added Lib folder path to the Search Path tab
and it worked.

Thank you!!

Hi Anton,

Here are a couple of things for you to check:

1) Check the C:\Programmi\ElmSoft\FrameScript5_70\Lib folder and make sure
it contains DocUtils.fsl.

2) Choose FrameScript Options and click the Search Path tab. Make sure
that C:\Programmi\ElmSoft\FrameScript5_70 is included in the list of
directories. If it is not, click the Add button to add it. Click Save and
try the script again.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very
much.

Any idea of how to solve this issue?

How to search archive

2011-10-06 Thread Anton David
Dears framers,

I would like to know how you do to search the archive.
As far as I see, you have to open each single month thread to do a search.
Is there a way you can do a search on all archive contents?

I have the feeling we are not leveraging the information the best way and
many times same questions might be repeated.

Wish you a pleasant day

R: Word count in CMP files (FM8)

2011-05-13 Thread Anton David
 Hello Frederik,

I don't know whether you can do this in FM8, but usually the workflow for
translating FM documents (and updated FM documents) in the localization
world has a totally different workflow.
We usually convert FM into MIF then into some format editable under a
translation memory management tool so previous translations are constantly
leveraged. Once translation is complete, we convert back the files and
perform the required DTP tasks.

FM 8 on PC, Windows Vista, 32 bit system, 2.38 GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM.

And Frame is crashing WAY too often. In files it SHOULD be able to handle
nimbly.

Today, e.g., the only FM files open were two document files, both under 200
KB, no books or generated files. CRASH.

There was a 23 MB PowerPoint 2007 (.pptx) file also open, but still, come
ON---this is FRAME here.

Is this a Frame-Vista matter, and if so , does it get better in FM 9 or 10?

Compiling FM into help files (wfp file)

2011-01-12 Thread Anton David

 Hello all,

A client is requesting to recompile FM7 files after translation.
The template file available in the staging directory has .wfp extension.
Opening it in a text editor, I can see quadralay-wdt-80
The output files requested are .chm and compiled online help.

Is anybody able to tell me which tool has been used and which version?

Thank you

FM / how to identify new images

2010-12-15 Thread Anton David
Hello all,

I have a user guide. All images (screenshots) are in a specific folder.
Some of those images will be updated.
I need to go through all the pages to check whether those images fit
properly in the frames.
Is there a way to list which images filenames are in which files in a book
in FM7 or FM9?

Thank you

I tried to generate a List of References. It works.
Is it possible to make each item of the list a Xreference pointing to the

You should be able to add a list of references that shows the files to your
book, assuming you imported the graphics by reference.

Rather than checking the fit in frames manually, I would use a
FrameScript Rick Quatro has one that does this, and other FrameScripters
should be able to write one.

In the "Set Up List of References" dialog, tick the "Create Hypertext Links"

R: FM7 to PDF / Gibberish in bookmark instead of cyrillic font /Solved

2010-12-02 Thread Anton David
 Hello all,

We decided to use PDF controller
(http://www.i-frame.itl.info/en/feature-description/i-frame-modules/translat
ion-pack/pdf-controller.html) to solve this problem.

We have also tried FM9 (actually on a FR XP Pro OS with Cyrillic fonts
loaded but it does not work. Bookmarks still display gibberish (Yes, all
fonts from system were embedded). Maybe in the future, we will test it on a
Russian OS. Anyway, we have not found any magic from Unicode point of view
in FM9.

Has anybody else encountered the same issue? Is there a solution

The only solution is to upgrade to FrameMaker 8 or 9, which support Unicode
and carry over the text correctly to bookmarks in all supported languages
(including Cyrillic).

[Some workarounds/interim solutions are available for FM7 or earlier, but
since these require purchasing add-ons/scripts, it makes much more sense to
upgrade FM.]

R: FM9/ Framemaker cannot initialize its dictionaries/ solved

 Hello all,

I thought I should share the solution.

Jeff has advised to contact Adobe support where they said I should download

This was not the solution.
So far, I have copied the installer on a DVD and always launched the

By chance, I copied the installer on a local disk, and launched it to
install FM9 on that same disk. This was the solution, i.e. don't launch
installer from a DVD but from the local disk itself.

When I try to launch it, it displays the message Framemaker cannot

I have checked the make.ini file and it looks OK. Parameter

Subject: FM9/ Framemaker cannot initialize its dictionaries

Hello everybody,

I have installed FM9 on XP and Win7 but I get the same error.
When I try to launch it, it displays the message Framemaker cannot
initialize its dictionaries. Either the LanguageDir entry specified in the
initialization file is missing or incorrect, or the files in the LanguageDir
are missing or corrupted
After this error, Framemaker quits.

I have checked the make.ini file and it looks OK. Parameter
LanguageDir=dict.
To be on the safe side, please zip the dict folder of an FM9 installation
and send it to me.
Other suggestions welcome.

Thank you

R: FrameScript/ script to convert miffm - Solved

2010-03-17 Thread Anton David
 Dear Framers,

Many thanks for all people who kindly asnwered to my query.
I followed the advise of David Spreadbury : just renamed the file from .mif
to .fm and opened them in FrameMaker, then used the command Save all open
files and saved them as .fm. The rest is just clicking OK and Overwrite to
Save the file. Make sure you set the mouse cursor to automatically go to the
predefined button (in Control Pnale Mouse).

Anton,
I just experimented with a few Frame files, saved out as mif. I renamed the
mif to fm and opened them in Frame, without issues. Depending on how many
mif files you want to save as Frame, you can either do it manually or get
one of many freeware file renaming tools to rename your mif to fm.

Hello David,

I know that I can open the mif file in Frame. But for each file, I have to
do a Save As and then choose FM as file type, and possibly change also the
extension from mif to fm.

Anton

There is a script in FrameScript called DirSaveAsMif.fsl, but it saves into

Have you tried just opening the mif in Frame? No extra tools are needed, mif
is native to Frame.
