Smart Quotes?

Winfried,

The font I was having trouble with was Times New Roman and the smart quotes
work in that font now.

I am on Digest. I did not get your message until now.

Hi Michelle,

I use FrameMaker 8 and therefore do not know, how this is set up in FrameMaker
10.

In FrameMaker 8 there is a section [Spelling] in maker.ini which lists the hex
codes for the various smart quotes for various languages.
Maybe they are not correct in your maker.ini file. Compare it with the values
of an older FrameMaker version.
The English default in my FM 8 version is:
SmartQuotes=''

My local folder lists this for German smart quotes:
SmartQuotes=\x2c\xd4\xe3\xd2

Which fonts did you test?

Best regards

Winfried

Hello Winfried and Michelle

Thanks so much for the tip regarding the maker.ini. The original setting was:
SmartQuotes=`' (sorry, can't reproduce the angles in this email format)

I changed it to:
SmartQuotes=\xd4\xd5\xd2\xd3 )  ;English curved quotes

BTW, that ) really is there, though I have no idea what it accomplishes, or why
it doesn't break things!

This solved the problem. Now it makes no difference whether Smart Quotes is on
or off; I still get the correct characters.

I had this problem with both Minion Pro (open type) and Times New Roman (open
type). These are fonts that I have used for years in FrameMaker without a
problem, so there is no doubt that the glyphs exist. I didn't try any other
fonts, but I suspect they would have had the same problem. The issue first
arose about six months ago, long after I started using FM9, but has been
consistent ever since that time. The up side is that in the process I learned
the Alt codes for single and double curly quotes :)

The other issue of keyboard shortcuts not working is also frustrating. When I
start FM they work. Then after a time, they stop. I have been unable to narrow
it down to any cause. It confirms the impression that, unlike earlier versions,
FM9 is flaky (or as someone on the list recently described it, a dog).

Thanks again.

problem is that quote key does not produce a quote in my document.
Instead it produces a question mark. This just started happening with

FM 10 and font treatment

2011-05-23 Thread Brabson, Michelle
Hi--

My computer has Arial Black (True Type) in the Windows Font directory. When I
open documents containing Arial Black I get the following message in the
FrameMaker Console: The Arial Black font is not available. Arial Black Heavy
will be used in this session. I do not have Arial Black Heavy anywhere that I
can see. Is there any reason why FrameMaker wants to substitute Arial Black
Heavy when it is not on my computer? If I open the PDF, I see only Arial Black
in the list of fonts.

Upgrades to Acrobat 8 not working

2009-11-11 Thread Brabson, Michelle
Framers,

When we install Acrobat on new or refurbished machines we do not have the
ability to install Acrobat 8.1 through 8.1.7 without serious ramifications to
Acrobat functionality. When this occurs, Acrobat does not allow us to enter
values on the Initial View window on the File Properties menu in Acrobat. It
also does not allow us to save via the Advanced PDF Optimizer window.

Note that we are able to install up to version 8.0 with these Acrobat functions
work properly, but we are concerned about the messages from Adobe describing
security issues that require the additional upgrades. Any help understanding
this problem would be appreciated.

Remote Desktop and FrameMaker

2009-08-26 Thread Brabson, Michelle
Hi--

Does anyone know if FrameMaker works with Remote Desktop? I have this set up
and I find that several files I work with blow up. I do not have this problem
on other configurations, that is, not using Remote Desktop. I am on FrameMaker
7.2.

Any help is appreciated!

Michelle

FW: Framemaker image problem

2009-03-06 Thread Brabson, Michelle
This post is from a colleague of mine.

I have a growing problem with imported images into FrameMaker 7.2.

I typically work off a network. A few months ago, I started getting an odd
message when I'd try to save files with images that are imported objects.
(These are files I've worked on for years.) Even if I didn't change the image
but only, say, changed the footer information, I'd get the following message:

An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document.
The file has been saved, but has lost some image data.

Our production manager looked at the files, copying them to her desktop, and
had no problems. So I started working on those files on my desktop, and for a
short time, the problem disappeared, only to come back worse than ever.

Now, whenever I save a document into which I've inserted an image, I get this
message. I've tried 'FileImportFile...Import by Reference,'
FileImportFile...Copy into Document,' 'FileImportObject...Create from
File...Link,' and FileImportObject...Create from File' (without a link). I've
tried to import Canvas files (.cnv), Visio files (.vsd), plain .jpgs and plain
.gifs, and always get the same result.

Once this occurs, I have a file in the same path as my original file with a
seemingly random 3-character extension after the .fm, such as 'CO4' or '357'.
If I double-click the file and open with Frame, or if I delete the wonky
extension, the file opens, but a grey box is displayed instead of the image.

I'm on FrameMaker 7.2p158, with Window XP Professional Version 5.1 (Build
2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236 : Service Pack 3).

Our production manager found a previous post about Service Pack 3 of XP causing
problems with imported images, but she is also on Service Pack 3 and is not
having this problem.

I am on digest. Please respond directly to the e-mail addresses so we may see
your comments when you make them.

First do a shift/save all, then a shift/close all.

Is there a quick way to save and close the files?

I am saving the book and using shift/close all files but it makes me

It takes over a half hour.

 Any other way??

 Thanks

After my motherboard went feral, I had to rebuild with a new
motherboard, cpu, video card, etc. XP Pro had to be coerced into working
again, but it was OK.

But my Acrobat Pro 8 installation now refuses to make PDFs using either
FM 8 or 7.1 with either Save As or print to PostScript. After a short
time, Frame stops responding, the top menu bar disappears, and it has to
be killed.

I've Repaired, Uninstalled Repaired, Deactivated and Activated, and
muttered various incantations. Nothing seems to work.

Strangely, both Word and Excel do produce PDFs.

Any clues?

If you're using a version of Frame with an Undo feature, and you're
seeing an OK to clear history? dialog for every file you save, try
clearing this check box:

File Preferences General Show warnings while clearing history

URL does not work

2007-12-07 Thread Brabson, Michelle
Hi--

I created a hypertext marker from the command Go to URL in FrameMaker 7.2
p158 and created a PDF using Acrobat 8.1.1. When I click on the active area in
the PDF in Acrobat 8.1.1, it went to the URL I selected. When I tried to click
on the Active area with the PDF in Acrobat 7.0.9, Acrobat started to attempt to
download something. Do you know why a hot link for a URL would behave
differently in Acrobat 8.1.1 vs. 7.0.9 if I created it in A8.1.1?
