Adobe's FM9 Classroom in a Book is very basic, but will get you an
understanding of the FM10 interface, which is only slightly changed from
FM9. For more info, much of Scriptorium's Unstructured FM8 is still valid
and useful when working with Unstructed FM 10 (as I have recently). No
guide exists (that I'm aware of) concerning Structured FM9 or 10. I don't
recommend Underwood's Introduction to FM9 for Windows; it's too basic and
has an inadequate index.

All I can think of is that you are missing a DefaultParaFont (or

As far as I see, you have to open each single month thread to do a search.
Is there a way you can do a search on all archive contents?

I checked the other job options and made sure I wasn't printing to a Mac or
not checking Convert CMYK, then mif-washed the file (to use Art Campbell's

have time to research in the next week or so.

 but
maybe that's a clue to one of the situations you mention.

This message has nothing to do with the problem you describe. You will get
this message whenever you change to a different printer driver because
FrameMaker relies on the Windows printer driver to provide it with the font
metrics--the precise dimensions of each glyph in your document. In all
versions of FrameMaker from 8.0 onward, the default printer driver is the
Adobe PDF virtual printer, on the valid assumption that most users will
want to produce a PDF file as their primary deliverable output. If you print
a hard copy directly (rather than producing a PDF and printing *that* file),
you will necessarily change to a different printer driver, and FrameMaker
will warn you that the font information has changed.

I can hear you wondering why in the world a minor change in font metric
information matters to you. It matters because the subtle difference in
dimensions of individual glyphs can add up to enough of a difference to make
certain lines of text to break one word earlier or later, or to cause a line
break inside a table. The change in line breaks can potentially make the
paragraph a line longer (or shorter), and that can make the page breaks
change, and that can make the page count and the page numbers in the TOC and
 index be wrong.

FrameMaker is not alone in being affected this way. Most other word
processors (including MS Word) are affected in exactly the same way. The
difference is that other tools don't bother to warn you that anything
changed. Word has always been notorious for having instabilities in its
pagination, and at least some of that behavior is attributable to printer
 driver changes.

The positive side of my problem is that I'm getting some really good info.
Your input, Fred, is illuminating and explains a previously inexplicable
behavior of Word I've noticed on occasion.

Can't get a pdf file from FM 10

2011-08-13 Thread Cal Callahan
It's one large .fm file, not a book. Even with the pdf job option
(theoretically) saved and selected, I can't get a pdf file using either save
as or print to. Two of my cohorts also had no luck with the file.

There are unresolved cross-references and there are references to images I
thought I had removed and replaced with images imported into the file. Could
either (or both) of those be causing my problems? If not, what?

Willing to try even the least likely solutions before going through the
arduous and odious task of basically rebuilding the entire file.

One suggestion was to turn off the images and try printing again. I'm not in
the office today, but that's the first thing I'll try when I go in. Any
other thoughts?

Re: Responses to Can't get a pdf file from FM 10

2011-08-13 Thread Cal Callahan
I'm using Windows 7 and Acrobat Pro. I'm not at work right now, so can't
check how much RAM free disk space I have, but I'm sure there's plenty.

I tried print to file, print to PDF, save as PDF, print to pdf Cute Writer
(?), create pdf from Acrobat Pro, and probably some others I don't recall. I
sometimes would get the job option error message, but that seems to have
gone away since I created a job option called Standard1. I see a file not
found error from Acrobat Pro that presumably results from my opting to show
the pdf after generation.

Don't know about the font embedding or the job options setting for that, but
will check when I go back to work Tuesday.

It's a company computer, so don't know what patches have been installed, how
I would know if they had been installed, or if I can install the HotFix for
Postscript printers. (Do I need this when I'm just trying to save a file as
pdf?)

Thanks for your feedback and sorry I'm fuzzy on the details.

For example, if you're running XP but haven't applied the Microsoft

 failure.
Same thing if your large file doesn't have the temporary space on
the hard drive required to generate several sets of PS and PDF files.

Is the file failing to PDF at a particular point in the file, or at
 different points, randomly?

More details please. What exactly happens when you try to produce the
 PDF?
Any error messages? Can you print to file and distill from there? Are
 you
using Acrobat Pro or just Distiller? Are the fonts licensed for
 embedding
and the job options set to fail if not? Are all your programs fully
  patched?

Yes, you should definitely clean up unresolved references before
 printing,
but I don't think they would cause a PDF failure if you've successfully
opened the file. (They could cause a fail if you were printing from a
 book
without having opened all files first.)

Flow problems in FM10

2011-07-06 Thread Cal Callahan
Back to FM after years away, creating my first template from scratch (not
well). I have text flow A starting on pg. 2 of doc, can’t add text frame now
to start the beginning of that text in a page 1 text frame. FM window says
text added to end of flow, want it at beginning. Tried splitting
connecting text frames in various ways with no luck. What am I doing wrong?
(Or not doing.)

Motivating users/typography, etc.

2009-05-25 Thread Cal Callahan
Good points, Mike. Let's not forget that devil reverse type (drives me crazy
regardless of colors), proper use of sans serif vs. serif type, line length,
etc., etc.

There are so many considerations regarding document design you could write a
book about it. In fact, several people have. A text from one of my courses
I've taken (taught by Sharon Burton, if I'm not mistaken) might be of
interest: Karen Schriver's Dynamics in Document Design.

Motivating end users to read the user manual

2009-05-20 Thread Cal Callahan
I like Sharon's advice (ask the user directly). But I haven't seen anyone
mention context-sensitive help or conditional text.

I hope the lengthy paragraphs in your query are not representative of your
manuals--that would certainly turn off users.

A couple of guidelines:

KISS--keep it simple, sir.

Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them what you want to tell
them, then tell them what you told them

Engineers like flow charts and logic diagrams, so fire up your Visio and try
to put the points across that way.

And everyone likes pictures, so see where you can use those. (Many people
are visually oriented and don't like to read.)

I hope I haven't insulted your intelligence. I'm just picking trees out of
the forest.

FM7 and OLE

2008-09-03 Thread Cal Callahan
The problem is with MS OLE. You MIGHT work around it by removing SP3,
although this didn't work for me. (That was the only suggested solution I
found in an extensive search of the web.)

My problem, however, was a little different. After importing a Visio file,
all attempts to copy paste text from a Word doc into Frame resulted in the
text coming in an anchored frame. I got around it by running the text
through OpenOfficeWriter first.

I had no problems with Frame 8.

I would very interested in hearing how anyone else resolved this problem.
