Sad news

2011-06-14 Thread Doug Cuff
Bruce Foster, creator of many fine FrameMaker plugins, passed away
suddenly on Saturday, June 11, 2011. Although Mr Foster had been
diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September 2010, his death still came
earlier than was expected.

Mr Foster's wife Barbara Foster today responded to a recent e-mail I had
sent to Bruce requesting assistance with his Archive plugin, by letting
me know this news. Mrs Foster gave me permission to post here on
FrameUsers, and mentioned her intention of updating her late husband's
web page (http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster) with the news of his death.

Mr Foster's plugins for FrameMaker were Archive, BookInfo, ImpGraph,
MifSave, MifToFM, and RtfSave.

New Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and new, Adobe Learning Suite

I hope that FM9 will meet your needs. I also fear that it won't.

Several of the alpha- and beta-testers, including me, made the point about how
vital shortcut keys like Ctrl-8/F8 and Ctrl-9/F9 were to the way we work. We
made the point repeatedly, after several builds, and strongly.

Whether or not the developers actually listened to us in the final build, I do
not know. I haven't seen it yet. I am waiting eagerly to find out. Perhaps
someone could test out the free trial download and let us know? (I couldn't get
the download to work for me yesterday.)

Odd keyboard behavior

2008-10-17 Thread Doug Cuff
This is fairly bizarre. I've been having no problems at all with smart quotes
on FM8 p277. I spent
a moment or two wondering what Mr Griffith was talking about (but confident he
did know ;-).

My maker.ini looks like this:

; Smart Quote Characters
; SmartQuotes \xd4\xd5\xd2\xd3 ) English curved quotes
; SmartQuotes \xe2\xd4\xe3\xd2 ) German-style quotes with base quotes
; SmartQuotes \xd5\xd5\xc7\xc8 ) French-style quotes using guillemets
; SmartQuotes \xd5\xd5\xd3\xd3 ) Swedish- and Finnish-style quotes
; SmartQuotes \xd4\xd5\xd2\xd3 ) Italian curved quotes
;
; English curved quotes:
SmartQuotes=‘’“”

Plugins, Framescripts, etc.

2008-09-08 Thread Doug Cuff
I'll definitely add a filtering option for FM versions, excellent idea.

Wow--thanks! Colour me _chuffed_.

Or if you (anyone) knows of any tools that have been updated
or have suggestions for other tools that should be added, please let me know.

Character Tools and Paragraph Tools (both from Silicon Prairie Software) have
both been updated to
work with FrameMaker 8. I have a sneaking suspicion that their other plugins
are okay for FM8 too,
but I don't know that of my own knowledge.

Plugins, Framescripts, etc.

2008-09-05 Thread Doug Cuff
Regarding your list, Scott, very helpful but it would be really great if you
could organize your plugin list by Framemaker compatibility

Actually, what would be even nicer is in the search could include an option
exclude-FrameMaker-versions-earlier-than. Yeah, that's kinda greedy of me.

But my larger problem isn't with Scott's terrific list but rather with the fact
that too many of
the plugins I supported by buying are no longer being updated. (Silicon Prairie
Software is one
terrific exception.)

My employer provides me with a FrameMaker 8 license on my work desktop, but
this week I am using my
own personal laptop with my own personal FrameMaker 7.1 license. Two plugins
that simply do not
work under FM8 will allow me to burn through tedious monkey-work in hours
rather than days.

Sadly, when I need a really complex find-and-replace, I save my files as MIF
and use TextPipe Lite
on 'em (datamystic.com/textpipe/web.html). That too is my own personal license,
but now that I
think of it, I shall point out to my employer just how useful it is in hopes
they buy a few
licenses. And since TextPipe Lite isn't a FrameMaker utility, it doesn't
support finding and
changing paragraph formats or anything like that.

PDF Creation Add-on

2008-06-27 Thread Doug Cuff
We don't now remember having *uninstalled* anything about FM
 before upgrading Acrobat.

The good news is that it's easy to tell whether the PDF Creation Add-on is
*still* uninstalled.
Follow the usual Start Settings Control Panel path if the add-on is still
installed, it will
appear in the Add or Remove Programs control panel. I seem to recall it's under
Adobe PDF Creation
Add-on. I invite corrections.

 What should we do now?

It's at moments like this that I'm glad there are so many people more
knowledgeable than me on this
list. At least one of them will chime in shortly.

FrameMaker v8.0.4 (p277)

2008-05-27 Thread Doug Cuff
According to the readme, patch 277 contains one fix:

=-=-=

Adobe  nbsp;FrameMaker  nbsp;8.0.4 ReadMe nbsp;

This update resolves the critical issue found in FM 8.0.3.

After installing FM 8.0.3 ,CrossRef marker present in Framemaker file is
deleted during Show/Hide
condition because of which Cross-reference gets unresolved.

=-=-

In the meantime, some of the bugs fixed in 8.0.3 are still very much with me.
For example, Next
Pgf Tag is still broken when the paragraph tag has no text in it except for the
autonumbering.
