Hi Amy,

Yes, sorry, I tried the *.* option to copy all files, and as I mentioned it 
copies ALL files including the .bat file. If I limit it to finding only the 
types of files I want to copy then it works, in my case*.xml. But it is rather 
limiting in the case that I had, say, 10 different file types I would have 
liked.

Anyway, I'll keep playing with it.

Good stuff. This is why it's so nice to have a little DOS in your pocket so you 
can customize it for the way you work.

Jaime,
Are you copying *.*? That copies everything. I don't know of an exclusionary 
command with copy, but it may exist-I'm not an expert, I just troll the web 
until I find what I need. ;-)

For now, to copy everything except *.bat, you would need to specify only the 
file types to be copied, as in *.fm, *.backup.fm, *.backup.book, *.log, etc.

For example:
Copy *.backup.fm *.backup.book *.log  *.pdf .\ProjectBackup\

I have been messing around with your batch file idea but I am having an issue 
with it.

I want to create a batch file to copy all files in the current directory EXCEPT 
for the actual batch file, and no matter what I do using the copy command it 
simply does not work. So, do you know how I can exclude the .bat file when 
copying files?

I like having backups available in case of crashes or other emergencies, so I 
don't want to turn them off. As it's also my habit to save different "versions" 
of an active FrameMaker project in different folders, backups are only required 
for those emergencies.

That makes a lot of clutter in the folder for my FM files, and there are times 
I need to see my files without the clutter. Deleting or moving backups is not 
easy if you have lots of files; you can reorder the files any way you like but 
the backups stay glued to their parent FM files.

To get rid of the backups temporarily, I wrote an old-fashioned batch (BAT) 
file that moves backup files to a folder on my C: drive (FM_Backup) and then 
deletes the log file. It takes only a few seconds to run, and leaves a pristine 
view of the FM files.

IMPORTANT: This only works when FrameMaker is closed because FM automatically 
regenerates backup files as soon as you touch an open file.

The code I use is below. You can modify it to delete the files instead of 
moving them, change the backup folder name, get rid of the log deletion, 
whatever you'd like.

1.   In Notepad or another text editor, copy the following lines:

Move *.backup.fm C:\\FM_Backup
Move *.backup.book C:\\FM_Backup
pause
Del *.log
pause
Exit

2.   Save the file as "FM_backup.bat" or any other name as long as it has a 
BAT extension.
3.   Create a backup folder on your C drive called "FM_Backup."
You can name this folder anything as long as it matches the folder name in the 
BAT file.
4.   Copy or move the BAT file into the same folder as your working 
FrameMaker files.
IMPORTANT: You must insert a separate copy of the BAT file into every folder 
that contains your FrameMaker files.
5.   To run, double-click "FM_backup.bat."
The pauses stop the program to provide feedback as it moves the files.
6.   Don't forget to delete the backup files when they are no longer 
needed, as the backup folder gets bloated quickly.

I especially like using this when I save different "versions" of an ongoing 
project. When I open a folder containing an earlier version, I only see the 
project files.

The code uses the simple DOS commands move, delete, pause, and exit. It doesn't 
save multiple versions of backups or work from any location except where the FM 
files are stored, but you could get fancy if you're inspired to take this to 
another level.

Conditional formatting lost when pressing Enter?

Hi Everyone,

How do I maintain conditional formatting on text from one paragraph to the next.

For example, if I am typing text in a certain condition and I need to create a 
new paragraph in that same condition I want to be able to just press Enter and 
keep typing in that same condition. Every time that I press Enter I lose the 
conditional formatting in the new paragraph.

I know that I can just select the new paragraph and assign the condition to it 
manually, but I want to avoid that extra step, if possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Everyone,

How do I maintain conditional formatting on text from one paragraph to the next.

Hi Stephen,

They may be trying to cut down on the prepping of FM files for translation, 
sort of like an engineering cost. I would think that a price of $12 p/p would 
be for the prepping AND the formatting of the FM files after translation. By 
them asking you for Trados files it takes care of the prepping part and most 
probably assumes that someone else will do the formatting.

Anyway, I find this strange as in the past I have always provided FM files and 
the company doing the translation took care of everything else on their side. I 
received my Fm files translated into the target language from which I made PDFs.

Can anyone familiar with translating FM files explain why the individual is 
requesting files in Trados format? Can that be done - just pay a company to 
generate Trados files from FM files?

I used this technique a while back in FM7 to remove some obsolete conditions 
that still had instances of hidden, but unneeded text.  I deleted the 
conditions, one by one, and answered the FM prompt dialog by allowing it to 
delete all the associated conditional text.



After saving the document, it was no longer openable At All.  Trying to open 
the doc, I received an instant FM error - one of those oh-so-informative 
dialogs with lots of cryptic error numbers, none of which yielded anything 
useful when I searched for them in the Adobe knowledge base.



Luckily, I did have a backup of the document.  We use structured FM.  I 
experimented with copies of the original doc a while to try to figure out what 
was going on.  It turned out that after I deleted one particular condition, 
allowing FM to delete the associated text, the structure entirely disappeared 
from the structure window!  After that... the document was dead.  Oh I could 
see it and change it and save it, but after I closed it, reopening it would 
instantly crash FM.  No recovery possible at that point - no MIF wash possible 
or anything.



I'm guessing that some hidden para or bit somewhere that was critical to the 
validity of the document or the binary integrity of the file had been somehow 
tagged with that condition, and when I deleted it, the doc became an invalid 
file.  I worked around the problem by displaying all the text symbols and 
conditional text with indicators.  Then I searched for instances the condition 
I wanted to delete, and deleted them one by one, watching the structure view 
after each deletion.  Under those circumstances, none of the individual 
deletions caused the structure to disappear.



I believe, but can't be certain because it was so long ago, that one of the 
instances of the deleted condition occurred at the end of the document.  
Perhaps some important formatting or structure information was contained in the 
final para or closing hidden symbol of the file that the find/delete removed to 
kill the document.



But the moral of this shaggy dog story is:

I used this technique a while back in FM7 to remove some obsolete conditions 
that still had instances of hidden, but unneeded text.  I deleted the 
conditions, one by one, and answered the FM prompt dialog by allowing it to 
delete all the associated conditional text.



After saving the document, it was no longer openable At All.  Trying to open 
the doc, I received an instant FM error - one of those oh-so-informative 
dialogs with lots of cryptic error numbers, none of which yielded anything 
useful when I searched for them in the Adobe knowledge base.



Luckily, I did have a backup of the document.  We use structured FM.  I 
experimented with copies of the original doc a while to try to figure out what 
was going on.  It turned out that after I deleted one particular condition, 
allowing FM to delete the associated text, the structure entirely disappeared 
from the structure window!  After that... the document was dead.  Oh I could 
see it and change it and save it, but after I closed it, reopening it would 
instantly crash FM.  No recovery possible at that point - no MIF wash possible 
or anything.



I'm guessing that some hidden para or bit somewhere that was critical to the 
validity of the document or the binary integrity of the file had been somehow 
tagged with that condition, and when I deleted it, the doc became an invalid 
file.  I worked around the problem by displaying all the text symbols and 
conditional text with indicators.  Then I searched for instances the condition 
I wanted to delete, and deleted them one by one, watching the structure view 
after each deletion.  Under those circumstances, none of the individual 
deletions caused the structure to disappear.



I believe, but can't be certain because it was so long ago, that one of the 
instances of the deleted condition occurred at the end of the document.  
Perhaps some important formatting or structure information was contained in the 
final para or closing hidden symbol of the file that the find/delete removed to 
kill the document.



But the moral of this shaggy dog story is:

use it as our main translating too and it works great with FrameMaker files. It 
only accepts .mif files as do most if not all other translation programs.

The limited utility and additional overhead of a house-developed kludge might 
well end up making it more expensive than hiring professionals who have the 
right tools for the job or, if you do a lot of translation in-house, buying 
translation memory software.

example, Arial Unicode.

Or he may mean if the original source document fonts were changed to Korean 
fonts before translating.

The problem is easily fixed, though, by changing the font to a Korean font 
after translation.

Hi Ed, From my experience, working with those Arial subsets is not optimal, 
especially when it comes to outputting as PDF.

I would change the font to Arial Unicode instead as that is a full Unicode font.

- FrameMaker 7.1
- Windows Vista Home Premium

- Turkish text is being transfered from TTX (Trados) format to MIF. The 
characters get lost in the transfer. We found a font called Arial TUR for FM. 
Once we have the text in MIF, we change the font to Arial TUR and it is working.

- Destination paragraph style font is Arial TUR. Check and see that you have 
Arial TUR in your list of fonts for FM.

Turkish Characters Don't Display

Hi Ed, From my experience, working with those Arial subsets is not optimal, 
especially when it comes to outputting as PDF.

I would change the font to Arial Unicode instead as that is a full Unicode font.

Here is some more information from my translator.

not overwrite the same images in the English folder, right?

That behavior sounds as if you had pressed Ignore All missing files instead of 
Skip this file.

I just tried it on my FM and it will continue to give me the missing link 
dialog window for every image.

I have retaken screen shots from our UI in French, giving them the identical 
filenames as the English version and storing them in a separate directory. Note

So, let's say the English art directory contains 100 images. The French art 
directory contains 50 images, which are named identically to their english

when it doesn't find one of the missing files. When I select "skip this file," 
Frame doesn't continue loading the files that *are* in the French directory. 
Instead, it goes back to the original directory -- or goes somewhere else -- I 
haven't tracked it blow by blow.

How can I get it to stay in the French directory?

And FrameMaker looks repetitively for the same fies that I've already told it 
to skip, sometimes two or three times before it finally finishes identifying 
all the files that it can load.

How do I get this process to work smoothly?

I'm thinking of asking our translation house to load the files for me, in case 
they have some easier way to do it. but I'd rather do it myself.

I agree. That is one of the first things we make sure all of our prep team 
members know when teaching them how to process FM projects. 

It's no big deal when the links are all in one folder and no sub folders, but 
most times our client's FM projects have links in multiple sub folders.

Helping FM find graphics files
