RE: Is it possible to export a FM file without including all of the conditional text?

2011-12-08 Thread Laura Larson

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

For those who were curious, the reason I was asked to do this is that the
company who owns the manuals sometimes sells their product under a rebranding
agreement, and smaller companies do not have the justification to use Frame.
I'm not too worried about anyone else taking over that manual set. The company
has been a client for a number of years and they keep pushing work my way. And,
their customer was warned that the Word output wasn't going to look too pretty.
;-)

In terms of the export itself, the actual exporting to .rtf files wasn't a big
deal for those chapters that were mostly straight text. However, there were
plenty of tables and screen captures, which initially bloated up the manual to
640MB. Using Acrobat Pro to save as word files seriously messed up the
formatting in places, so I ended up using a combination of the two methods for
individual chapters.

As for the .mif export, that didn't seem to eliminate the conditional text that
I was trying to exclude. Maybe I just didn't know enough about how to do that.
Next time I'll try Mif2go.

Thanks again!
-Laura

Is it possible to export a FM file without including all of the conditional text?

2011-12-06 Thread Laura Larson

I have a group of manuals where I use conditional text to keep track of the
different variations.

My customer asked to have a word copy of one of the manuals. Is there a way to
choose conditional text for the manual that I want which excludes all of the
other conditional text in the final output? When exporting to an .rtf file, all
of the information gets exported, even if I'm only showing the conditional text
that I'm interested in. As a work around of last resort, I had to do a Show All
and manually strip out everything I didn't want in the final version.

There must be a better way. I've been using v7.1, but on the trial version of
10 I noticed the same thing happening. Does any one have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

RE: Adjusting dialog box sizes in Framemaker?

2007-04-19 Thread Laura Larson
I've had good results with Klaus Daube's plugin.

http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker36.html#2

The only thing I wish it would do a little better is display the full
filename of source graphics in cases where Frame is looking for missing
files. We have graphics spread all over different servers (ugly I know)
and knowing more than just a subfolder or two would be really helpful.

Otherwise, I've been very happy using it.

You can use ResHacker (cautiously! backup your files before messing with
'em) http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

Use it on the fmdlg.dll file in your fminit folder.

book paginating woes

2007-01-09 Thread Laura Larson
The file settings of the following file *did* indeed seem to be the
issue.

Thank you so much Fred, and to all who responded.

A few helpful expansions on David's excellent response:

It's the Start On setting of the *following* file in the book that
causes the behavior you describe in your "problem" files.
If you get a blank verso page in a chapter, the second place to look
(after making sure that the current chapter is set to Delete Empty
Pages) is the pagination properties of the next file in the book.

Also note that the Next Available option that David mentions is only
available from the book window. The pagination properties you set in the
individual chapter apply if you ever print that chapter on its own, and
without the context of the book there is no notion of "next available".

Finally, you can set the pagination properties for a group of chapter
files in the same operation by selecting the chapters in the book window
and then right-clicking and choosing Pagination from the pop-up menu.

Laura,

It's very likely that in the Book, the files are defined to start on
right pages in a double-sided page setup. If this is the case, Frame
will always add a blank left page, if necessary, in order to maintain
consecutive running pages as it generates and updates the Book. In such
settings, Frame will not end a file on a right page, and then continue
the next file on a right page. It must account for a left page, even a
blank one, in between.

If you don't want any empty pages and don't care which side the files
start, set the files in the Book to start on the "next available page"
and to "delete empty pages." Then, save the Book and reupdate it.

HTH,

book paginating woes

2007-01-08 Thread Laura Larson
I have two files in a book that refuse to leave out blank even pages. I
go through and reset the pagination so that both the book and files
match pagination and numbering settings to delete blank pages, and each
time I go to regenerate the TOC, in returns that extra blank page.

I've gone into my master pages and tried to reapply them, I've
reimported new page layouts from files that I know work as they are
supposed to, and I've even copied the text (we're only talking one page
here of an introduction), and the new files takes on the same
troublesome attributes. This is only an 25 page document, but the
chapter files are similar to another book so I'm reluctant to put all
the text into a single file for the sake of consistency.

The only hint of a potential error that I get is that there may be
something on the page about an irregular column layout.

The specific message is that the new column layout seems to overlap
other objects on some body pages, am I sure I want to apply the new
column layout? and the specific page that is supposedly impacted. Even
though I click Yes, nothing changes. I have nothing but text on the
page, there are no residual graphics, nor residual conditional or hidden
text for that matter.

Another error message that I've seen is that there is no mapping in the
reference pages for my master page. However, I would have thought that
if there were an error in that regard that it would have been corrected
when I reimported my new formats from a good file.

Could those vague errors be complete misdirection? Any suggestions would
be most heartening.

Using Conditional Text in Books

2007-01-03 Thread Laura Larson
Is there a way to change the conditional text settings for all of the
chapters in book at one time, rather than having to go in and reset each

I have three books that I have set up to share several chapter files,
but having to go in and change the conditional text settings for each
chapter at a time seems rather cumbersome.

I'm using Frame 7.1. Any suggestions would be most welcome!
