FrameMaker (dita) and SVN

2012-12-07 Thread Lief Erickson
I've also used TortoiseSVN for years without any issues. The local files
wouldn't be out of sync with the repository unless unversioned files that had
been created (but not added to SVN) were not committed (i.e., you have local
files the repository doesn't know about) or you had failed to update from the
repository (the repository has files [or versions of files] your local system
doesn't). I've never had issues with local files not getting committed to the
repository; and that includes working in the same building as the repository as
well as connecting through a VPN from thousands of miles away.

To Steve's point about the icons being out of sync, I have seen this from time
to time. Rather than doing a commit, one could do a SVN Cleanup where you
refresh the shell overlay icons.

The one proviso is that the originating FM doc can't change in any way after
the review PDF is created if you hope to merge comments back into it later.

Hi Deanna
First, they released Acrobat XI today or yesterday, so you'll likely be doing
your work with XI instead of X.

Next, you'll need Acrobat Pro on the machine producing the PDF, and from there
you can initiate reviews with your team using anything from Reader (9 or above)
to Acrobat Pro (9 or above). If I recall correctly, this has been true since
Acrobat 5 or so.

I have successfully run reviews with this setup and then migrated comments
back into the FM document (FM 10 and 11) with the supplied workflow, which is a
fraction of the effort required to manually apply changes to the original FM
document.

Hi,

review and comment on our FrameMaker documents. We then merge the electronic
comments into the PDF file and manually change the FrameMaker files accordingly.

For FrameMaker 11, Adobe advertises, Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip

implemented. Can you briefly explain how this feature works? Mainly I want to
know if we need to purchase Adobe Acrobat Professional X to retain our ability
to solicit electronic reviews from reviewers who don't have FrameMaker or if
the need for Acrobat Professional is eliminated by this feature in FrameMaker
11.

Thanks,

What version of FrameMaker are you using? There used to be a plugin called
CleanImport will do what you want. It's $15, but does not work with FrameMaker

Also, I'm sure Rick Quatro has a FrameScript that could do this. Perhaps
there's and ExtendScript that could do it too.

RE: PDF Shared Review problems

2011-08-04 Thread Lief Erickson
Hi Richard--

I'm not going to be much help, but are sure the comments are gone? All
reviewers when they open a shared review PDF have a .xml file created for them
in the PDF's comments directory on the shared review server. You could look in
that file to see if the comments are truly gone or if it's another problem. If
the comments are not in that file, then they're gone. If they are, then it's a
different issue (not that I know what it would be).

If your PDF is called Chapter1_review.pdf you'll have a corresponding folder
that's something like: Chapter1_review.pdf_f377ba938213ad932kdaf9321929dekli74.
It's in this folder where the reviewers comments stored in an XML file specific
to each reviewer.

Recently, I've been having problems with new comments not posting even
after author's selected Publish Comments.

This morning I'm missing comments that I know were successfully posted in
the share reviewed PDF yesterday.

Asking reviewers to update their version of Acrobat 8 and higher (Open
Acrobat and perform Help Check for updates... then installing any
updates) fixes the new comments not posting problem. However, after
updating, reviewers get upset when I also ask them to redo their comments.

Not seeing comments that I know were there previously scares me.

This is all a bit odd, since PDF shared review has behaved perfectly until
recently. Even when I went from XP to Win7 on a new computer a few months
back, PDF shared review continued to work great.

Since having the reviewers Help Check for updates... in their copy of
Acrobat 8+ seems to fix posting new comments, I suspect some recent Adobe
or Windows upgrade changed the playing field, so to speak.

Anyone else seeing problems like mine? What do you think the problem is?

I have had to add a new Condition to my books which requires me to

Ah, let me clarify:

In my normal manuals, we have a chapter containing OSHA safety
resources, and various x-refs within the other chapters point to it.
In my Mexican manuals, the Regional Safety References chapter alludes
to Mexican normas, and the other chapters have x-refs to those Mexican
safety regs listed there.

So, for instance, the Replace Group would include the following:

OSHA Crane Safety Quick Card
Equipo suspendido de acceso

The find-and-replace looks for all of the x-ref markers to OSHA crane
safety and replaces them with x-refs to Equipo suspendido.

When I work on a manual going to Mexico, I pull out the standard U.S.
Ch. 12 and put the standard MX Ch. 12 into the book instead. When I do
this, the x-refs in Ch. 2, for instance, are broken because they're
looking for the normal OSHA refs in Ch. 12.

Perhaps I've been complicating my life unnecessarily, but what I've been
doing, as I come to an x-ref in Ch. 2 that would normally point to an
item in the U.S. Ch. 12, is change it to the appropriate Spanish x-ref
for the Mexican Ch. 12. Automating that process of fixing the x-refs to
point to the appropriate resource seems like a more sensible way to go.

So the problem is that the replaced x-refs have the aformentioned font
issue when opened in FM 9.

Does that make things clearer?

All of them have a Hyperlink character tag assigned to them so the page numbers

This is automatically added after the page numbers.

But, I understand that you want the text entry itself to have formatting. I'm

Hi Richard...

Thanks for the very detailed explanation. I should have provided a bit
more info on this. I do understand how indexes are formatted and
generated, but what I was hoping for was that there was some way to
assign unique IX reference flows to each marker type and in some way
have this assign different LevelNIX para tags .. I assumed this wasn't
possible, and it sounds like this is the case. I was hoping to avoid
manually assigning character formatting to each entry.

Frank's semi-automated approach to adding the character formatting is
interesting, but it would be great if this could be done based on marker
type to reference page mapping.

I'm thinking the answer is no .. but wanted to check with y'all.

It's not clear what you want to format. But in any case, you don't assign
reference pages to anything. If you create an index, a text box containing
the IX flow is created on a reference page (which by default is also named
IX). The contents of the IX flow specify how the index is generated, ordered,
 and formatted.

The IndexIX paragraph, which typically contains $pagenum, tells FM to
include page-number references to markers of type Index. You can include
another marker type in your index by creating a pgf like IndexIX, but named
after the second marker type, e.g., OtherIndexIX. It can be formatted
differently -- for instance, you could make it bold or italic -- but that
formatting will be applied only to the page number.

The Level1IX, Level2IX, etc., pgf formats are used for the index entries at
those levels. So every 1st-level index entry will have the same pgf format,
whether it's from an Index marker or an OtherIndex marker.

If you want the text for an OtherIndex entry formatted differently, the
solution is simple. But you have to do it in the marker text when you create
the OtherIndex marker. You can include character formats, enclosed in angle
brackets, in the marker text. For instance, let's say you have a char format
named Other that formats the text the way you want the OtherIndex entries to
look. To create an entry for configuration, put this in the marker text:

   OtherconfigurationDefault Para Font

These things, and a lot more that you can do, are reasonably well explained
in the help/manual under Tables of Contents and Indexes.

 HTH!

RE: Indexing front matter

2011-01-13 Thread Lief Erickson
You could use a different marker for the content in your preface, include that
marker in your index, and use different page formatting for that marker. It
would be a new marker type that you would create. You might call it
IndexPreface or something like that.

I have done something similar with tables and figures. In my index tables and
figures are formatted differently so that they are more easily identifiable as
content in a table or a figure rather than in body text.

Subject: Indexing front matter

Hi, all.

My manuals use chapter numbering, so an index entry for page 3 of chapter 5
comes out like this:

Apple pie recipe, 5-3

The front matter has roman numerals with no prefixes, so a reference to
Technical Support in the Preface should look like this:

Technical Support, xiii

However, because the Index marker set up on the Reference page assumes there is
a chapter number prefix for every entry, the Technical Reference Support looks
like this:

4-xiii, or 1-xiii, or 0-xiii

depending on how I set the numbering property.

I know I could solve the problem by moving to straight-through numbering, or by
moving the Tech Support information to some other location in a regular
chapter, but there are problems with both these solutions. Right now, I want to
stick with figuring out how to use Frame correctly to create the entry I want,
which would be

Tech Support, xiii

I know how to set up a new IX format in the Reference page of the Index, which
would use only the $pagenum variable.

What I can't figure out is, how do I assign that format to the Preface entry
only?

Thanks for all suggestions.

Subject: FM 9 crashes when I try to save .book file with changes on Windows 7
64-bit

I recently got a new Win7 64-bit computer. I installed FM9 new on it and
applied all updates.
When I open a FM9 book and chapters created on my old 32-bit machine I
can work on it as usual, but when I save the book, FM crashes.
I have reproduced it to the point where simply opening the book file and
Saving As... causes the crash, even when no changes have been made.
Has anyone else experienced this? Am I missing something simple? Does
anyone have a good insight that will help me track this down?

RE: FM 9 crashes when I try to save .book file with changes on Windows 7 64-bit

2010-08-23 Thread Lief Erickson
I would suggest uninstalling your plugins and then trying your book. I had a
case a couple of months ago where FrameMaker would crash when I closed the
application (although I could save files and books just fine). I was able to
isolate it as very old plugin (~2000) that wasn't designed to run on Windows 7
(even though I'm using 32-bit Windows 7).

Even though I use many of the same plugins you listed, I'd suggest starting
with a plugin-free installation and add them one-by-one to see if it's a
plugin.

Good luck, John, and post up your results,

RE: Footnote color

2010-08-17 Thread Lief Erickson
Do you want the color applied universally to all footnotes through a template
or do you want each footnote to have its own color?

To apply color to all footnotes, simply change the color of your Footnote tag
in your template. You could also apply color on a one-off basis, but that
creates paragraph overrides -- something most FrameMaker users usually want to
avoid.

To apply color to the Footnote number, I think you'll need to create a
Character tag that is the color that you want and apply that Character tag to
the number.

RE: Footnote color

2010-08-17 Thread Lief Erickson
Ah, that wasn't clear to me that he wanted just the number in the footnote. I
thought he wanted the entire footnote and the number in the text.

Hmmm. Yeah, I don't know how you'd color just the number in the footnote
itself, unless you want a hack way to do it.

I could imagine that you could make the default Footnote paragraph tag the
color that you want, then use a Character tag (called Black that is set to
As-Is except for the color) to change the paragraph color back to black. Be
sure there is a space at the end of your footnote that you do not select and
include when applying your Character tag though.

Like I said, it's a bit of a hack, but does get you a colored number and black
text in your footnotes.

Hello Lief

The issue is, though, that you can't access the footnote number alone, since
it's not defined in the footnote paragraph format. Any changes to the paragraph
format are applied to the whole footnote, not just the number. As far as I can
see, there is no way to format the number differently from the text. This
appears to be so whether you are using structured or unstructured documents.
I'd be happy to be proved wrong...

I imagine it's a marker you create on your own. I've never seen a Pending
marker in the 12 years I've used FrameMaker. I'm currently using v9. So, like
Bill said, you'd have to create your own (and import/add it to all of your

Instead of using markers, I have used conditional text to accomplish what the
author has suggested. I created Draft tag. That allowed me to show/hide text
until it had been approved. Of course, there's no reason both methods couldn't
be used together. I like the idea of being able to create a List of Markers and
jump to it and like the idea of being able to hide unapproved draft text. The
List of Markers certainly makes it easier to jump to a spot than searching for
a conditional text tag.

 Marker option, eg,:

 http://www.technicalcommunicationcenter.com/2009/02/22/technical-writing-how-to-use-the-pending-marker-in-framemaker/

The problem is, Pending doesn't seem to be one of the Markers available in
FM9. I could always create my own Pending Marker but I wondered if I was
simply missing something. Does anyone know if this Marker has been removed in
 the latest versions of Frame?

No idea, and I don't have FM9 at my present location to check (it's
home). But, even if you need to create it, it doesn't interrupt the
process outlined in the article. Nice find!

FM9 - closing pods

2010-05-24 Thread Lief Erickson
Hi Mary--

You can find all of the keyboard shortcuts for FM9 here:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/9.0/Using/WSd817046a44e105e21e63e3d11ab7f7862b-7ffd.html

Although some things have changed a bit, you can still use keyboard shortcuts
for a lot of your work in FM9.

Hi folks--

Is there a keyboard method to close pods??To return them to the doc??

Count me in the long list of people with mixed feelings about FM9.
I'm a long-time FM user who dropped offlist a few years ago; I'm back now that
we finally got budgeted for an upgrade...big change. I love some of the new
features.? I'm upset about the increasing reliance on the mouse -- it's much
easier on my hands to use keyboard commands than mouse.? And admittedly I'm in
my first day using it but... geez, did they *really* eliminate that may of the
escape sequences!?

Thanks all,
Mary

RE: Utility for Book-Level Searches for Tracked Text Edits

2010-04-27 Thread Lief Erickson
If you are using Special Track Text Edits, there is no change bar
automatically. You must have change bars turned on, too. That's two things to
turn on/off/clear. With lots of files that quickly becomes a hassle.

Special Track Text Edits uses two hidden conditional text settings to show
what was added or deleted. This has no change bar. And you can't search for
these using Find, but you can locate them with the Track Edit tool bar or using
this shortcut Esc s t n.

Format Document Change Bars shows that something on the line changed, but
isn't specific about what changed. Can be searched for using the Find dialog
though.

Pick your poison.

RE: problems with long URLs in PDFs

Hi Jakob--

When you add the URL in FrameMaker are you then adding a Go to URL Hypertext
marker through Special Hypertext Go to URL? If you do that, then apply a
character tag to the text, the link should work, even if it breaks across lines
because it is the character tag that becomes the link. I've never add any
problems with any URLs I've added using Special Hypertext. I've never relied

Hi,

co-workers of mine have trouble with some long URLs that break over
lines and some may also contain special characters such as question
marks or parentheses. Please note that we're using Acrobat to create
the PDF and that the Generate Tagged PDF option is selected (as
documented here: http://www.frameusers.com/2007/09/ second article).
We use the latest patched FrameMaker 8.

Here are some samples of this problem, I give as the underlying link
what FrameMaker and Acrobat thought should be the URL to use:

- line break (indicated as [LB]) and question mark in URL:
http://www.aiaa.org/aerospace/Article.cfm?[LB]issuetocid=14ArchiveIssueID=5
underlying link: http://www.aiaa.org/aerospace/Article.cfm?

- parentheses in URLs:

underlying link:
http://www.olis.oecd.org/olis/2007doc.nsf/linkto/com-env-epoc-ctpa-cfa

- two URLs on same line become one:
International Transport Forum, for the OECD/ITF Global Forum on

(www.oecd.org/dataoecd/ [LB]

Alison,

If I understand your situation correctly, all you need to do is use the
Open All Files in Book commend from the File Menu (Shift + Open). When
you receive the Can't find the Graphic dialog, just navigate to the
new graphic directory and click on the correct file. Make sure that
update to New Path is checked, then hit OK. FM should automatically
find all of the remaining graphics in the new directory. Then just Save
ALL.

Version: FM9 (9.0p237)
Unstructured
OS: XP Pro with SP3

I received a set of Spanish files back from my LSP today and as I was
making some adjustments within the files (I do the final format tweaking
as DTP charges are outrageous) it became obvious that they had
completely screwed up my graphics - which I import by reference. As the
LSP is in Europe I am hoping there is a simple batch method to change
the relative path for my all graphics rather than have to re-link by
hand or wait for a set of corrected files.

The path is only out by one level.

The FM files sit directly above my Graphics (Linked) directory (which
is further categorized by Chapters, Appendices, etc.). However, there is
now another directory above Graphics (Linked) entitled FM

...\FM\Graphics (Linked)...

instead of

...\Graphics (Linked)\...

Is there a simple way I can get rid of the FM in the relative path (I
don't have FrameScript) or am I screwed and need to wait for updated
files from my LSP?

Alison

FYI: This isn't a mistake the LSP normally makes. I have no idea what
they were playing at but I'll be having words with them!

Subject: Relative Path Problem for Linked Graphics

Version: FM9 (9.0p237)
Unstructured
OS: XP Pro with SP3

I received a set of Spanish files back from my LSP today and as I was
making some adjustments within the files (I do the final format tweaking
as DTP charges are outrageous) it became obvious that they had
completely screwed up my graphics - which I import by reference. As the
LSP is in Europe I am hoping there is a simple batch method to change
the relative path for my all graphics rather than have to re-link by
hand or wait for a set of corrected files.

The path is only out by one level.

The FM files sit directly above my "Graphics (Linked)" directory (which
is further categorized by Chapters, Appendices, etc.). However, there is
now another directory above "Graphics (Linked)" entitled "FM"

...\FM\Graphics (Linked)...

instead of

...\Graphics (Linked)\...

Is there a simple way I can get rid of the "FM" in the relative path (I
don't have FrameScript) or am I screwed and need to wait for updated
files from my LSP?

Alison

FYI: This isn't a mistake the LSP normally makes. I have no idea what
they were playing at but I'll be having words with them!

All,

The name of the application for which I am currently developing a manual is
a hideous mix of upper and lower case letters and numbers. (Marketing
really outdid themselves on this one.) Obviously, it's a PITA to type this
creature every time I need to use it , so I set it up as a variable and have
been inserting it when needed. Of course, the Special Variable option
requires me to scroll through a list of variables to find the one that I
want and that's not that efficient either.

Deep in the fuzzy recesses of my mind, I remember something about a nifty
little keyboard shortcut to use to insert a variable (compliments of Fred
Ridder or John Posada or Richard Combs - one of you FM gurus out there!) I
remember something about the list appearing in the bottom tray of the FM
window and you used this keyboard command to scroll through the list
onscreen and select the one that you want - does this even sound close or
right to what I remember?

Anyway, if y'all have the answer, it would be much appreciated.

RE: Problems with updating unresolved internal xrefs in FrameMaker 7.2p158

2010-01-21 Thread Lief Erickson
Hi Linda--

Are any of the references to text that is hidden? If so, the x-ref will appear
to be broken. It will resolve just fine when the text is showing, but as soon
as you hide destination, the x-ref becomes unresolved. The solution is to
either unhide the hidden text, or, more logically, hide the unresolved x-ref,
since the text it is linking to is already hidden.

Can someone on this list possibly explain why suddenly I'm not able to update
unresolved internal cross-references with this version of FrameMaker? I can
find unresolved external cross-referneces to other chapters, but not unresolved
internal cross-references. As a result, I can't update a book file. All the
chapters are open, of course. I'm using conditional text to generate two
different versions of a book.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, except telling me I need to upgrade
FrameMaker. That's not an option for me.

Thanks much for your help.

Blurry vector/raster images in PDF

2010-01-12 Thread Lief Erickson
Hi All-

I have an image that is partially blurry in Acrobat. The image is a mix of
vector and raster. I have created an Illustrator CS4 drawing and I'm trying to
so how certain dialogs in our application affect the computer on which the
application runs. Portions of the computer are represented as vector drawings
and I have placed screen captures (.png from SnagIt), which are the raster
portions.

Here's what's intriguing:

1. Save As PDF from Illustrator, the resulting PDF is clear for both the
vector and raster portions. Why is this clear? So I know it's possible to get a
clear combined vector/raster image.

2. Import the Illustrator file into FrameMaker and print, the raster
portion is completely blurry, but the vector portion is crisp. Why is the
vector clear, but the raster is blurry?

3. Import that crisp PDF from Illustrator into FrameMaker and print to
file, the raster portion is completely blurry, but the vector portion is crisp.
(This doesn't surprise me because FrameMaker really imports the PDF preview of
the .ai file.)

This lead me to believe that it's a compression setting in my Acrobat PDF
printer, or something that FrameMaker may be doing to the file. I've tried
changing various image compression settings in my Adobe PDF printer, but
nothing has worked. Any hints on where to look or what to change so that both
things are clear? How can I get a mix of screen captures into a vector drawing
that remain crisp? If I need to change my workflow, that's fine.

RE: Creating an FM9 Style to Apply Forced Page Breaks

2009-06-23 Thread Lief Erickson
Alison--

You can create a style that has a large space below defined, which has
the effect of pushing everything to the next page. This is what I have
done and has worked well for years. I called mine 0PageBreak so that it
is the first tag that appears in the list when I press F9, which makes
it very easy to insert. It's also easy to search and remove all of these
artificial breaks too by using a specific paragraph tag.

Is there a way to create a style that accepts all existing formatting
and simply applies (i.e., forces) a page break? My attempts to create
such a style have failed so far.

I really don't want to have to create an Override every time I want a
page break based on layout/esthetic reasons.

I really don't want to have to create an Override every time I want a

I do not see an MS Word-style accept-reject comment option, but it

RE: Why does Frame cycle 2x ?

2009-01-22 Thread Lief Erickson
My experience is that if you leave the Find dialog box to edit
something, FrameMaker knows this and starts its search over from the
last location of the cursor in the flow until it has circled through the
file back to the cursor spot. If you don't jump from the Find dialog
into the document, FrameMaker only goes through the file once. I know of
no way to have it stop once it reaches the end of the file without
circling back through if I've made a change in the document that wasn't
using the Find dialog.

Has anyone experienced the problem of when generating a PDF from a Frame

space still reserved.

From what we can tell, it only happens on XP Pro OS and is more prone
(though not always) in text inserted by reference.

The presence of a table caption is determined by the table format as
shown in the Table Designer. You can set it to No title if you wish.

Figure captions are just paragraphs that you may or may not want to

If you are using structured FrameMaker, you can have a figure caption
inserted automatically every time you insert a figure.

 Hope this helps.

Anyone else having trouble getting this update to install?

I've tried multiple times, including from Acrobat after completely
shutting
down my system and every time it says that it detects that FM is open
and
cannot install. At least twice, FM was definitely not open.

Wondering if it's just my system or if others are having the same
problem. I
was really hoping to get my dictionary working properly.

The FrameMaker 8.0.3 update is now available via the Adobe Updater.
It will be available via Adobe's website in the very near future.

Per the readme...

List of major issues resolved in this update.

* Extended characters have extra preceding space when using Arial
Unicode MS

* FM catalogs don't sort properly.

* DITA Conref does not get resolved in some cases.

* Some higher code point characters are dropped on MIF open

* In documents with Japanese, Chinese and Korean combination fonts,
quotation marks look different than in FM7.x

* While using Combined Fonts, non-Asian characters present in the Asian
font
are displayed using the Asian font instead of the non-Asian fonts.

* Random letters disappear from textline present in oval within anchored
Frame.

* Use of page range in Index randomly adds a couple of question marks
left
and right in the generated index file.

* Characters become invisible on the screen on the next line while
hyphenating words just before the accented chars.

* The NextPfgTag remains the same when pressing Enter at the beginning
of
the line.

* FM crashes when a document containing hypertext (spread over two
lines) to
marker is saved.

* FM spellchecker does not make use of user.dct entries

* History palette does not record typing command in textline.

* FM crashes on saving a file after deleting split-ed text line.

* For a 3d imported by reference, on moving it from hidden to show all
after
applying conditional text, the referenced path is lost and has facets
which
are for u3d imported as copy

* Pressing space button at the start of line places cursor at the end of
line.

* Drag fails if the target happens to be a locked range.

* FM crashes when a graphic file with object properties dialog open is
overwritten at the system.

* Importing object to the second file when Quick Access Bar and
Formatting Bar are open and then closing the file, crashes FM.

* Converting a cross-reference to text crashes FrameMaker when the
format of
the cross-reference has been edited.

* Performing a find change using the backwards option leads to a crash.

* Change All operation of a character leads to crash.

* When an equation is applied in conditional text and hidden, it results
in
crash.

* The hyphenation of words in old netherland language changes character
case.

* In Netherland language words get corrupted when unhyphenation is done
with
the words which have dieresis.

* Garbage characters are shown in Tab stop list box if a legacy file
containing higher ANSI characters in Align field of decimal tab is
opened in
FM 8.

* Japanese tab stops do not work in FM 8.

RE: Paragraph Designer - Next Pgf Tag

2008-04-20 Thread Lief Erickson
This has been my experience, too. I find it terribly annoying because
I've designed my templates specifically with some paragraphs that are
blank.

Typing text into the paragraph makes the next paragraph feature work.
Leaving the paragraph empty simply repeats the current paragraph tag.

RE: Text Inset Problem with TortoiseSVN

2008-04-10 Thread Lief Erickson
I've used TortoiseSVN with my FrameMaker files (along with my insets)
for a couple of years and have not had any problems. Some thoughts:

+ Are the files stored on a server or locally? If they're on a server,
are the writers using mapped drives? Are the drives mapped with the same
drive letter (e.g., F:\)?

+ If the files are updated to a local directory on the hard drive, are
all writers using the same directory structure? This should be exactly
the same so that relative paths are maintained.

I'm not convinced it's an SVN problem. My guess is that it may be
directory structure related.

My client started using imported text insets for some boilerplate
paragraphs. In the folder tree, the folder of boilerplate source files
is at the same level as the folder of the FM book. Both folders are
checked into TortoiseSVN, an open-source client for Subversion, a
version-control program.

Every time a different writer opens a FM file that uses one of the text
insets, s/he gets an error message from FM saying the text inset is
unresolved. Re-importing the text inset fixes the problem for that
writer. Every writer opens the same FM file and imports the same text
inset, so there's no reason for FM to lose the link. We copied both
folders to a location outside SVN and the problem did not occur, so it
has something to do with SVN.

By the way, the book folder contains a subfolder of Xrefed image files,
and SVN doesn't interfere with those links. We're going to try Xrefing
the text insets instead of importing them, but Xrefing them means we
lose the formatting and markers (Index and Hypertext) in the source
files.

So ... anyone know what's going on here with SVN?

RE: Text Inset Problem with TortoiseSVN

2008-04-10 Thread Lief Erickson
You would not need to get locks for any text insets. Just the main
document (unless you are making changes to the text inset itself).

With multiple writers it's good practice to use the exclusive lock
feature of SVN with FrameMaker files. SVN can't merge FrameMaker's
binary files and manually merging two writers' changes is a pain. Take
my word for it.

Mike,

This is shot in the dark, but are you using exclusive locks and the
svn:needs-lock property? If so you might need to get locks for more than
just the file you're opening.

RE: Run WinOS (and FM) on a MAC OS X

2006-08-08 Thread Lief Erickson
I recently switched and a main reason that I did was a product called
Parallels (www.parallels.com) that does the same thing as VMWare. As long as
you are not looking to be a high-end gamer, Parallels is a sweet tool. It
turned my Mac into a Windows machine while staying in the Mac OS (better than
Boot Camp, which requires a reboot).

I'm not affiliated with Parallels, just a licensed user.

Hi, guys...VMWare is a company owned by my company (EMC), so I
thought I'd pass this on.

VMWare is signing up beta testers for a version that will run on MAC
OS X that will permit the creation of a partition that will allow the
running of a Windows (or other) OS.

http://vmware.rsc02.net/servlet/campaignrespondent?_ID_=vmwi.1756

...Mac even more with the ability to simultaneously run any PC
OS-Windows, Linux, NetWare and others-on Mac OS X. Switch between
operating systems by easily tabbing between applications and share
data between the two operating systems by dragging and dropping files
on the fly-all without needing to reboot. What's more, you can create
virtual machines and run them on other VMware products or run any
VMware virtual machine on your Mac.

Just passing on something you might find of interest.

Run WinOS (and FM) on a MAC OS X

2006-08-08 Thread Lief Erickson
I recently "switched" and a main reason that I did was a product called

"...Mac even more with the ability to simultaneously run any PC
OS-Windows, Linux, NetWare and others-on Mac OS X. Switch between
operating systems by easily tabbing between applications and share
data between the two operating systems by dragging and dropping files
on the fly-all without needing to reboot. What's more, you can create
virtual machines and run them on other VMware products or run any
VMware virtual machine on your Mac."

Just passing on something you might find of interest.
