Re: [Framers] FM 2017 Feature Request: Restore color and scaling to menu icons

2017-03-20 Thread Scott Turner
As an example, one only has to look at the kludge that Microsoft made of Word.
It is not as easy to do perform certain function or to access features. New and
fresh can be simply, "we needed to justify getting more money from our users."

Yes it can be done, and it is effective for printed materials. I did this for
documents back around Frame 5 onward. I used conditional text to set the
chapter bleed tabs. That was back when the company k was with produces a

Not as Framemaker does it. Closest function is embedding another file, or

SharePoint also has storage capacity issues. It is not a fully capable CVS, it
is better at content management. These are are two distinct and separate
functions. SharePoint is a sow's ear wanting to be a silk purse as far as CVS
functions are concerned.

Re: secured PDFs

2015-03-03 Thread Scott Turner
In the financial industry we are under requirements from the CFPB to provide
authorized documents to our internal users. One part of that is access to
secured online docs. We want the authorized version to be used and that is only
possible from a single online access point, ensuring that the latest authorized
version is used. We don't want them to extract anything, or to print.

Rick and Syed have the meat of it. Keep it simple.

We do not use small increments, the x.1 and so forth, because we consider all
changes to the doc as major. We don't have to worry over what constitutes a

This is also true in Structured Frame, only there you should select the the

We had that happen using FM 10 also. The best I could figure out from
information I gleaned from Microsoft and Adobe, it was a peculiar reaction

Good luck, Adobe has assumed the corporate policies toward customers that

Re: . PDF query

2014-10-20 Thread Scott Turner
The reason this hasn't been "fixed" is that it's a Microsoft OS problem, not a
FrameMaker problem. It's been made better, but Microsoft is still the culprit.
Under the Apple OS, this was a non-problem because there was no translation
from CMYK to RGB. They were separate attributes.

That depends on what DTD or schematic you are using. Since we use DOCBook, I
found that I got the best explanation of element usage from the ORielly Media
publication, DocBook-The definitive Guide.

There are other sources if information out there that are online.

Re: Import by reference question: Word conversion to FM11

2014-06-05 Thread Scott Turner
Another technique to get graphics in vector rather than raster format is to
extract the page from the PDF, then crop the image. Your final image, while
better than a simple raster graphic is still limited by the original
resolution. This does get around the horizontal band problem.

alphabetic <$chapnum>

2013-10-21 Thread Scott Turner
One thing to watch for is that all styles that use this numbering stream have
the exact same number of placeholders. Otherwise you may encounter numbering
discrepancies.

The instance you show makes me a bit nervous since the <$chapnum> variable is
in second position.

Differences in screen fonts not appearing in printed or pdf docs

2013-10-14 Thread Scott Turner
Interesting problem.

The use of two Garamond fonts from different found arises will no necessarily
produce discernibly different characters. A totally different don't family
should be used instead of two Garamond fonts.

I have noticed that on Windows, font representation accuracy diminishes when
viewing at less than 100%. I've noted that characters lose definition unless
viewed at 120% magnification.

That seems to be part and parcel of the Windows font management code under high
resolution screen viewing.

FM 8: Xref markers keep breaking and re-breaking

Ooo, yes. If you use text insets, any xref inside that text inset will be

I never used version 8. And every time my xrefs broke it was either the xref
marker had been deleted during editing or the relative path had been changed.

FrameMaker: Is any version URL-aware?

2013-09-30 Thread Scott Turner
Actually, it's the reverse process that Word uses. This way you can include a
URI as plain text and not have the program assume you wanted a link.

Unlike Microsoft, Adobe does not usually assume it knows what you want to do.

OT: Font suggestions for book?

2013-08-18 Thread Scott Turner
I have a fondness for Minion or Garamond. I think you can find a free font that
is similar to these. However, the cost is relatively small, so purchase should
be considered.

The advantage if Minion and Garamond is that they both have a relatively low
height to width ratio, making them very readable. If you opt for a free font,
look for that. Avoid Times, it's narrow, designed for newspaper columns.

Windows 7 + FrameMaker 11 = BOOM!

2013-08-13 Thread Scott Turner
We operate from network server drive, and have experienced the very same
problems while using Win 7 FM 11.

It isn't really a problem with FM, it's a server problem involving latency on
the server.

If you look at the resulting files after a crash you may see son with stable,
apparently random extensions. These are the open temporary files that FM
creates while working in an open file.

The crash occurs when the serve cannot keep up withe file writes.

Thank both Microsoft and your IT Department. Your infrastructure cannot keep up
with your companies demand.

importing HTML into FrameMaker?

The real question may be is there a method in FM, or a tool that will convert
tags from one to another. I envision a mapping tool like when you convert an
unstructured into a structured document.

Frame vs Word - the decision

2012-09-25 Thread Scott Turner
I for one think that my time is more valuable when I am writing, rather than
reformatting or performing work arounds that Word requires.

But then most of management under values what other people do.

Adobe Community Forums and Obtuse website

2012-06-19 Thread Scott Turner
After not going to the Adobe website for several years, simply because I didn't
need any support, I visited it today.

Is it simply me in my old age or has Adobe gone one better than Microsoft in
making their corporate website TOTALLY unusable? I could not find any sign of
the community forums, nor could I easily find a link to the support area.

Dov, are you reading this?

I'm a long-time customer an Adobe has basically told me today that I am not
important to them. I refuse to buy Microsoft products because of that attitude.
Is Adobe set in making my experience with them the same as with Microsoft?

Tell your masters that programmers and marketing should NOT be allowed to
design interfaces, nor do they have an clue about how to satisfy customers.

I am incensed, frustrated, and extremely angry that I can't find the
Information that I need through their now non-existent support channel.

icons on new Macs

2011-12-14 Thread Scott Turner
Can't without an pperable copy of Frame. If you are running Frame in boot camp
or a virtualization program then the icons might appear, otherwise you need to
assign a system icon to the files. Candy Bar might work. It would require a
little graphic work though.

Re: icons on new Macs

2011-12-14 Thread Scott Turner
Can't without an pperable copy of Frame. If you are running Frame in boot camp
or a virtualization program then the icons might appear, otherwise you need to
assign a system icon to the files. Candy Bar might work. It would require a
little graphic work though.

Frame 10 XML/translation question

2011-12-04 Thread Scott Turner
Nadine is correct I saying that the transition to XML would be massive, in that
you would need to learn XML, create or standardize/accommodate your document
styles to a DTD like DocBook. And then create a transformation template to
convert your current documents to XML.

It's not impossible, I've done it in two companies.

You do not have to use DITA

In all it's a big job and the setup and education would take a significant
amount of time and effort.

It's not something to do without time to do it.

There is also a third party program from Microtype, called timesavers. It is

Structured Frame Reference Guides

2011-05-11 Thread Scott Turner
Fei Min is correct. I've found that the Structure Development Guide that is in
the Online Manuals folder in FrameMaker 7 is invaluable.

Paragraph styles will always have a paragraph break in them. Text range (which
will translate to a Character style) doesn't require a para break.

Training and Tools for DITA

FM has the ability to structure unstructured documents. See tha appendix in the
fm 9 manual.

Assuming that the formatting in the fm 9 documents followed a consistent style
the transformation won't be horrible. The real work comes in building the EDD.

relative link.
