table anchor location

2013-07-11 Thread Timothy DeWees
I've been struggling to get a table anchor to be at the bottom of one page
and the table to start at the next. This is something that seems to really
be important to my client. I understand that I can tell the table to start
at the top of a page, but then the anchor ends up on a blank page all by
itself. I've tried to set the anchor format to keep it with the previous
paragraph, but rather than the anchor moving back to the previous page, it
will pull the last line of text from the previous page to the top of next
page with the anchor. I've also tried setting negative space at the top of
my table, but the anchor still takes up a little bit of space and my client
will notice this. I'm thinking there must be something simple here that I
am missing. Thanks for any help.

Converting images with searchable text

2013-06-22 Thread Timothy DeWees
I'm working in a large, complex book (3000+ pages). One of my co-workers
was tasked with creating some new images for the book using visio. I
suggested converting the visio images into pdf images and pulling them
into the book that way thinking that the text within the images would be
searchable. The text within the original pdf images is searchable. But once
the entire book is converted to pdf, the text in the images is no longer
searchable. I understand that I can run OCR on the new pdf file and the
text will be made searchable. I was wondering though if there is something
I can do in the process of converting the visio figures and pulling them
into the frame book where the text would still be searchable after the frame
book is converted to pdf? I did some research and there seemed to be
varying opinions on this, with some recommending third-party software. But
I was wondering what I could do to improve this process without using
third-party software? Thanks in advance for your help.

global master page changes

2013-03-25 Thread Timothy DeWees
I have a document that changes very frequently, sometimes every month. The
client likes to have a version in the header, such as March 2013
Version, April 2013 Version, etc. Is there a way to globally revise all
of my master pages in the book from say March to April in the header title?
I'm currently running FM10 and would prefer to do this without using
framescript since not everyone working with these documents has framescript.
Thanks in advance for the help.

The rightward arrow is Unicode U+2192.

The first thing you need to do is choose a font that that character.
At least in Windows 7, Arial, Courier New, and Times New Roman all have it.
You can use Windows' (not FrameMaker's) Character Map utility's Advanced
View to check other fonts.

If necessary, you can define a character tag to apply that font to U+2192.

Thanks Mike, I was able to correct the problem by adding a font file
timr45w.ttf to my fonts folder. I did notice the line you mentioned in the
maker.ini file, but wasn't sure why it worked with FM8 and not FM10. In any
case, I think having the right font file is better in the long run than
having it substitute. It was confusing because it turned out I had the Times
italic and bold fonts, but FM8 was substituting for the plain Times font. I
had never noticed it before. Anyway, problem solved, thanks.

Times is also one of the basic PostScript fonts built into PostScript
printers. If you can't find it installed, you may be able to locate it on
the installation disk of a PostScript printer.

You can also remap Times to Times New Roman in the [UnknownToKnowFontMap]

gotten turned off:

RE: Keep paragraph with table

2012-03-27 Thread Timothy DeWees
Thanks Stuart, I'm sure I will get the spacing just right. I'm just so busy
converting this massive document so some other writers can begin revising the
content, that I haven't taken much time for fine tuning the pgf's. I like to do
the tweaking later when nobody is waiting on me. That's one of the things I
love about frame. I'm only using a handful of pgf's in this document and will
be able to easily make formatting changes at any time during the conversion and
revision process.

Tim,

You shouldn't get any extra white space. Double check the the two Space
settings, and make sure their absolute values are equal to each other and as
large as or larger than the font size of the anchor pgf. For example, if your
anchor pgf font is 11pt, make the Space Below -12pt and the table's Space Above
-12pt. The table should then begin right below the pgf preceding the anchor
pgf. (Also check Space Below in the preceding pgf, and Space Above in the
anchor pgf -- Frame will use the larger of the two if they are non-zero.)

Best practice seems to be to create a pgf tag dedicated to holding the
table anchor and nothing else. If you set its Space Below to a
negative number equal to the font size, and set the Table tag's Space
Above to the same negative number, the pgf will take no additional

Keep paragraph with table

2012-03-26 Thread Timothy DeWees
Stuart,

Thanks very much for your suggestion. It works very well. I got a little bit of
extra white space, but the breaks look much, much cleaner. And if I tweak the
spacing some, I might even be able to get rid of the extra white space. Thanks
again.

Best practice seems to be to create a pgf tag dedicated to holding the table
anchor and nothing else. If you set its Space Below to a negative number equal
to the font size, and set the Table tag's Space Above to the same negative
number, the pgf will take no additional space itself.
Then Keep With Next Pgf will work to stick your heading to the table.

Keep paragraph with table

2012-03-26 Thread Timothy DeWees

HTH,

s.

Hi folks,

I was the guy with the problem pulling in text from a source table and
having it straddle rows in my new table. I thank you all as I got lots of
great suggestions and I promised to report back. In the end as I'm looking
at converting a 1700 page document, I decided it was time to get
FrameScript. As I know it has a pretty steep learning curve, I had Rick
Quatro set up my first script for me. I'm VERY happy with the decision I
made. I was looking at a hellish conversion and now I can convert the stuff
quickly and easily.

I don't intend this to sound like an advertisement. I've been lurking (with
the occasional post) on this list for years. I've often thought about
Framescript, but learning frame was hard enough and I was a little
intimidated by it. But with this latest massive conversion, I felt the time
was right and it was. I'm currently reading Rick's book and hope I can learn
to write my own scripts soon.

Although I haven't done it, if you Google the string: html table to excel
you'll find pages full of tools, including an Excel macro which apparently
will bring it in cleanly.

Otherwise (the method I've used in the past), you can view the source code
in another window of your browser. Copy and paste that into a text editor
(Notepad, NoteTab Pro, whatever) and do a search and replace for the cell
separator coding and row ends/beginnings to convert them either to tabs or
commas, and carriage returns, respectively.

Once you have a comma or tab delimited table, you should be able to work on
it in Excel, which I suspect will be quicker and easier for editing.

Then bring the cleaned up file into Frame by exporting as a text format FM
can deal with -- the comma or tab delimited file.

Hello Tim

A couple of things come to mind:

1. Check your para format settings, on the Table Cell tab in the paragraph
designer. There may be padding added there that you can eliminate.
2. Check the table format settings for padding inside the cells. These are
*added* to any padding referred to in #1.
3. Check other para format settings, e.g. right tabs, indents, etc.
4. Since you say this doc is converted from Word, check for hidden
characters at the end of lines. Word usually add a narrow hidden character
immediately before the paragraph mark (pilcrow). To test for this, check that
Vew Text Symbols is on, then use your right-arrow key to move a step at a
time to the end of the line. The easiest way to get rid of these hidden
characters is to save as MIF and then reopen and save as FM. It's a good idea
to do that anyway.

Hope this helps!

RE: Stop number break in table

2011-12-02 Thread Timothy DeWees
Works like a champ guys, thanks. At first it didn't appear to work, but I
forgot that the default setting for table margin in the paragraph designer
is Cell margin *plus* what you put in the box. I had to change that to
custom. Since I normally establish cell margins for a table in the table
designer rather than the paragraph designer, I wasn't as familiar with that
option. But that's a great trick because I work with tables a lot and that
will come in handy in the future.

Thanks, that does work. But one problem is that reduces the cell insets for
all cells in the table and causes text in other cells to run too close
together. That was an issue in the original Word document that I was tasked
to fix in the frame document. The whole document now looks great in frame, I
just can't get this one number to render correctly in the right column.

To test for this, check that
Vew > Text Symbols is on, then use your right-arrow key to move a step at a
time to the end of the line. The easiest way to get rid of these hidden
characters is to save as MIF and then reopen and save as FM. It's a good idea
to do that anyway.

Hope this helps!

Stop number break in table

2011-12-01 Thread Timothy DeWees
Works like a champ guys, thanks. At first it didn't appear to work, but I
forgot that the default setting for table margin in the paragraph designer
is "Cell margin *plus*" what you put in the box. I had to change that to
custom. Since I normally establish cell margins for a table in the table
designer rather than the paragraph designer, I wasn't as familiar with that
option. But that's a great trick because I work with tables a lot and that
will come in handy in the future.

Post Script error on conversion to pdf - related to table

2011-10-27 Thread Timothy DeWees
I am working in a document that was edited by someone else, so I don't know
all of the details of how the document was edited. But after I finished my
editing, I went to convert to pdf and one of the files is causing a post
script error. I was able to narrow it down to a specific file and a specific
table within that file. I deleted the table and re-built it to ensure it was
correct, but still get the PS error. If I remove the table, the error goes
away. The error looks like this:

%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: num ]%%

Stack:

2

/Heading

/T

-mark-

Note that if I build the same table somewhere else in the same file, it
works fine. It seems to be some kind of conflict with building a table
within a heading 2 subsection, but I'm not sure what's going on. Thanks for
any help you can provide.

Cannot select and delete imported image file

2011-03-23 Thread Timothy DeWees
I am working with a document where a former employee attempted to import
some image file (jpg) into anchored frames that I had set up in the template

were not correctly imported into the anchored frames, because they will move
out of the anchored frame if text is added/deleted, etc. I thought, no
problem, I will just delete the images and import them correctly into the
anchored frame. The problem is that I cannot select the images in order to
delete them. They were obviously imported by reference, since if I remove
the image source files, frame will give me a dialogue saying that the files
are missing and a gray box appears. But I simply cannot find a way to select
the images in order to delete them and re-import them correctly. Any
suggestions? The person who originally imported these is not available, so
I cannot ask him how he did the import. Thanks in advance for your help.

If the images don't move with the anchored frame, they were probably placed
directly on the page. If you can't select them, they're probably behind the
text frame. Try this: select the text frame, select Graphics Send to Back,
and then click the image to select it.

>If the images don't move with the anchored frame, they were probably placed
directly on the page. If you can't select them, they're probably behind the
text frame. Try this: select the text frame, select Graphics > Send to Back,
>and then click the image to select it.

Unresolved text inset book errors

2010-07-06 Thread Timothy DeWees
I just replaced a bunch of text insets in a book with new text inset files.
I deleted the old text inset files from the folder which are no longer being
used. Everything seems to be working fine, but when I regenerate the book, I
get a stream of unresolved text inset errors listing the file names for
those insets I deleted. However, those are no longer in use. When I do a
book search for unresolved text insets, the search does not find any. I can
even generate a pdf and everything looks fine. So there doesn't seem to be
an actual problem, it is just annoying that every time I regen the book, I
get this long list of errors. Any ideas? Thanks.

Tim

Opening book files without opening the book

2010-02-24 Thread Timothy DeWees

I am currently working with a couple of other people who are new to
framemaker. I've been using frame for a bit over two years on a near daily
basis. I use the practice of always opening a frame book before editing
individual files within that book. My concern is that by working in an
individual file without opening the book, that errors such as broken
cross-references, re-mapping of text insets, or other errors may occur. Is
my concern founded, or is it ok to edit individual book files without ever
opening the book? If anyone has a link to a discussion of this topic, that
would be particularly helpful.
