I occasionally get this with 7.1p116

Hi all,

a fellow Framer is using FrameMaker 7.2b144. Sometimes (and we don't know
how it's triggered) the keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+X, CTRL+Z and others) stop
working. When he quits and restarts FrameMaker, everything is fine again.

Is this a known bug? Has anyone had the same problem before? In which
version?

Kind regards

Subject: [Framers] Converting a frame maker document to a word document

Hello all,
I have an absolutely massive frame maker document (700+ pages including a
bibliography) that is laden with cross references and graphics. It’s a heavily
detailed scientific guide that I’m also single sourcing to produce another
guide from. I’ve gone round and round with my client on this, but they’ve
decided that they want everything in Word now, despite all my articulate
arguments about why Word is not the source tool you want to use for something
like this. That said, that means I have to convert this beast to a word
document. I know I’m probably up the proverbial creek without a paddle, but is
there any even remotely possible way to do this short of copying and pasting
everything in and manually reformatting ? I have tons across references. I have
numbered figures that need to remain numbered sequentially. I have a
bibliography that uses super scripts for cross references, etc. It’s just a
nightmare and I don’t even want to think about starting this but I don’t have a
choice.

Any and all advice short of drinking heavily and running away is appreciated

Thank you so much,
Tam

RE: PDF'd colored figures from FM to B/W?

2005-11-22 Thread peter
What printer is defined when you create the PDF?

I've seen this happen if you specified a mono printer.

Peter

Original Message

HI Everyone,
Does anyone have a clue why the following happens?

I have an FM file with a colored PDF figure (imported by Ref). (Don't ask why I
have the PDF figures and not tif or
something more suitable, currrently, that's what the client has).
The FM file looks fine.
Then, after I PDF the FM file (with the PDF figure/s) in it, my PDF figures
come out in black and white, but not colored. The
rest of the PDF is fine, including the other fig's (tif or eps or other).
I'm running FM 6 on Window 2000, acrobat 6 and/or 7 were used to create the PDF
with the same job options on all apps.

Any clues?
Thanks,
Orly.

RE: FM 7.2 starts much slower than 7.1

2006-05-19 Thread peter
There is a similar set for FM 7.1 too.

Peter

Original Message

When I received my FM7.2 upgrade I knew it was supplied with a new set of fonts
so I looked on the CD but couldn't find
them anywhere.

After inspecting my FM7.2 installation I found them all lurking in \Program
Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.2\fminit\fonts\Adobe.

I then attempted to install the fonts from there using the Windows "Fonts"
control panel. After some puzzlement I
eventually realised they were "Private Fonts" which could only be used in FM
7.2. They are clearly loaded by FM during
program startup and thus lead to the extended startup time.

RE: table anchors - best practices?

2006-06-28 Thread peter
I always anchor tables and figures in their own paragraph with a style called
Anchorline. Anchor line is set to 2pt text.
Peter

Original Message

Richard Combs had a comment in the thread "Question about the
hyperlink from the LOF to the figure":
"NOTE: There's a good case to be made for anchoring tables in their
own empty pgf, not at the end of the preceding text pgf, but I don't
want to complicate this any further. :-)"

This made me curious! I searched the archives, and I found 2 relevant
threads, which provided more food for thought:
"small paragraphs for adding tables" from Sept. 1, 2005
"RE: start a table at top of column?" from Sept 18, 2005

My take on this - and I am looking for support, comments, or
modifications - is that you should have a unique table anchor
paragraph tag for anchoring all tables. I believe this gives you best
overall control. Two reasons so far:

1. A unique tag always gives good control over material.
2. Wise formatting of this tag gives consistent spacing. And because
the formatting is built into a tag, you do not have to resort to any
manual formatting, which you might need to do, if you just
attach/anchor the table to the preceding block of text or whatever.

Right now, our policy is no separate paragraph tags for tables. I am
currently working on a monster manual with over 600 tables. There are
many situations where you have table after table with no text
inbetween. Based on this, I want to propose that we do have a unique
tag for anchoring tables. Richard's comment came at a perfect time, so
now I am asking what the rest of you think - or whether Richard wants
to reveal his reasons? I'd like to hear what people have to say.
Thanks!

regards, Karen Mardahl

RE: Problems with special characters

2006-07-05 Thread peter
Greater or equal is alt-0179 (I believe the 0 is required).

You probably need to wrap this in symbol font.

Peter

Original Message

Dear all,

I have a tough time finding shortcuts for special characters.

On the Internet, I found an Ascii table which specifies ALT + 242 for
"greater or equal than" ; unfortunately, when I type that, an "equal"
character appears.

I modified the regional options on my computer (set to French at first)
through the configuration panel but it did not change anything.

I have the same problem for the "different than" character.

Do you simply recommend using the Equation palette ?

Any help appreciated.

What version of Frame to Get Started ?

2008-05-15 Thread Peter Courlis
Good Morning,

I want to learn more about Framemaker,
I have Ver. 5.5 and have fooled with that but
need more experience...

The prices of the latest version scare me, unless
I had a contract or revenue input from writing...

Recognizing that ver. 5.5 has basic functionality,
what would be a next step?
Is it worth searching EBay for ver. 6.0 or try
to find ver. 7.1 at a reasonable price?

On occasion, I find late versions of "Upgrade" packages
available on EBay... Would some version of Upgrade 7.0
(or 7.1) bring my ver. 5.5 up to the next current level?

The recent List discussion on Jahred's "Beyond the Basics"
has stirred my curiosity, therefore I have found a copy
of that text to read and review...

Any comments appreciated

What version of Frame to Get Started ?

2008-05-15 Thread Peter Courlis
Good Afternoon,

Dov Isaacs said (in reference to Framemaker):
"what is hawked on EBay is either pirated or
stolen goods."

Gosh, I am happy that you told me that.
I have seen Framemaker listed on EBay that stipulates
"installed on one machine, only" and other variants of this
statement.

So I did wonder about that (registration and installation)
and said to myself:
"Well how would you know?"

So unless that it was stated that "it is new" or Shrink-wrapped,
and that "it is returnable" I do not even consider reading more...
I recently saw a Ver 7.2 (on EBay) with an attractive price,
that I got excited about, until I read down into the Listing and it said
"Absolutely No Returns"...
So I said: "I don't think so !!!"

Regards

Peter

You'll need to use Find to locate and select instances of the
character tag you want to remove, then manually apply Default
Paragraph Font from the Character Format Catalog, then manually apply
the character format you want.

While a FM character format can apply specific font properties to
selected text, it can't "unapply" character properties - whether
applied by a named character format, or applied as an override. "As
Is" means "do not change;" it would be great if FM offered a "Restore
Default Paragraph Font" feature.

FrameMaker -- removing heading rows in existing tables

2008-11-28 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Jim:

Table formats don't set the number or size of rows or columns;
creating or modifying a table sets these features. Table formats
remember the size and number of columns and rows of the selected table
when you create or revise a table format.

For existing tables, you might try selecting and merging (Table >
Straddle) the two heading rows. This combines the content of the two
rows, so you may need to do some clean up editing.

To revise the format to one heading row, select a new one-heading row
table, and click Update All in the Table Designer. New tables will
have the revised format.

On Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 12:54 PM, Jim Owens wrote:

RANT: FrameMaker's "help" function

2008-10-03 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Deirdre:

In FM Help, it's common that information is present, but it is
described in terms that aren't exactly the ones you expect or search
for, or it is buried in the mass of found topics.

Your search did find what you needed, about 12 lines down, in the
topic, "Breaking tables at a specific place."

Searches in Help file that's included in your FrameMaker installation
(the one that comes up with the F1 key, or from Help > Help Topics) is
and in the online Help you get by choosing Help > Complete FrameMaker
Help, which takes you to a page at Adobe.com sometimes rank responses
differently. Under User Guides, Using Adobe FrameMaker 8, clicking
LiveDocs takes you to a searchable online version of the User Guide.
Searching for table break returns the topic "Breaking tables at a
specific place" as the third entry.

This is all un- or under-documented. LiveDocs for some Adobe
applications work like wikis - you can post comments and correction
requests directly to them.

You can contribute greatly to the FrameMaker community if you'd post a
formal request at
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform to make
the FM LiveDocs interactive, and also to correct the LiveDocs, PDF,
and distributed versions of the FM Help topics "Controlling page
breaks in tables," and "Controlling where tables begin" to include
linked references to the topic "Breaking tables at a specific place."

Future generations of FM users will thank you.

In the meantime, you can download the FM 8 User Manual PDF and create
a full-text searchable index for it with Acrobat's Catalog function,
so you can perform searches any which-way you can think of, then
comment the topics you needed to find, and save. IOW, a living help

Specifying HTML Colors in FM?

Use View > Color > Definitions > Color Libraries, and select Online in
the pull-down list. Add the color(s) to the active list of colors in
the current document; you can change the name to a text name like
ShellPink, or use the #112233 notation. Then, you'll find the new
color in the options wherever in FM that you specify colors.

Perhaps someone has a suggestion about how to resolve this. I have
just?resolved all unresolved cross references in a 50-page document. When I
search for any unresolved cross references, I get a message that none are
found. Yet when I want to open or print the document, I get a message

Yes! To quote the intro to the TV show "Outer Limits," "There is
nothing wrong with your set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We
will control transmission..."

The IT update probably enabled a hidden "future technology" switch in
the spell checker. You're seeing a spell checker that tries to keep up
with the constantly-changing English language, in real time.

Actually, yes, if you don't want the frame's content to be anchored to
text and flow with it. Create a text or graphic frame with runaround
contour or bounding box property, and position it over the two
columns. The displaced text will snake down the left column, then to
the top of the right column.

Commas in paragraph tags

2008-10-27 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Chuck:

I don't have a solution, but I do have a suggestion. It sounds as if
you've found a bug in how FM processes the naming of paragraph (and
probably character) format names. If an embedded comma confuses the
running header/footer variable, it shouldn't be permitted when
defining the format's name. An explanatory alert should appear.

You might want to submit this as a bug report / feature request, at:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

Commas in paragraph tags

2008-10-28 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Charles:

You can rename paragraph formats across a book's files using only FM's
tools, this way:

* Before proceeding, from the book window, perform Shift+File > Open
All Files In Book, if they're not already open. Then, perform
Shift+File > Save All Files In Book.

* Click in a paragraph whose format you want to rename.
* In the Paragraph Tag box of the Paragraph Designer, type the new
name and click Apply.
* Check Store in Catalog and Apply to Selection.

The paragraph format now has the new name and the old properties.

* Copy the paragraph format with Edit > Copy Special > Paragraph
Format. The format is copied to the clipboard.
* With a selection in any book file or the book window, use Edit >
Find/Change > Find > Paragraph Tag and type in the old format name
exactly (spaces, symbols, punctuation, comma, capitalization, etc)
* Choose Change > By Pasting
* Select Look In > Book

* Try a few find/replace operations manually to see that things are
working correctly. If all's OK, Click Change All to propagate the
change across all the files in the book.

* Do some spot checks in the chapters to verify the results. When you
approve, from the book window, perform Shift+File > Save All Files In
Book.

If you have many files that are in different books, or are not in
books at all, you can create a new book to contain them all, just for
the purpose of changing the formats. Perform the Find/Change across
the files, BUT don't update the book, to avoid changing any properties
that are set in other books or individual chapters.

Server-based (hosted) documentation and user comments (DocBook?)

[cross-posted to TECHWR-L mailing list]

Can anyone recommend technologies to do the following:

* Hosted documentation, available on the internet as a web
service.

* Each doc topic allows users to add comments. (e.g. "Here's a
better example to do this task...")

* Management tools to moderate user comments, and to handle
documentation updates (retaining the comments).

* Authoring tools to produce said documentation.

The open source community exploits these technologies. How do they do
it? I have an inkling for a solution: FrameMaker>DocBook>ePublisher?

The common format was for image previews in FM documents, regardless
of the platform or graphic format. Without a FrameImage, a graphic
that couldn't be previewed would appear as a gray box placeholder on

InDesign as a replacement for Framemaker

2008-09-11 Thread Peter Gold
I respectfully disagree with Art's conclusion.

While this feature comparison checklist is pretty thorough, and though
it omits some features of both products, it is useful for some
purposes.

However, because it doesn't present a user's experience or evaluation
in using either product for its intended professional work, or for the
other product's intended professional work, by itself, it's not
sufficiently informative for making a decision about adopting one or
the other for one's technical-publishing workflow.

Are there any other features and tools that you rely on in FM, that
are missing in ID? Have you posted ID feature requests to the official

I agree that investing in the effort to learn things you need has its
share of pain that's usually repaid by being to work efficiently and
accurately.

However, from your statement, it's a little ambiguous which pain
you're referring to. Are you saying that the investment in pain is in
planning and the learning curve in FM? Or is the pain in investing the
effort in ID?

I reviewed the DTP Tools Cross-Reference plug-in for InDesign CS2 and
CS3 for InDesign Magazine around last December's issue. You'd have to
buy the issue to see the whole review, but very briefly: It's on par
with FM's cross-reference ability, and in some ways a little better.

There's also a free cross-reference script that creates
page-number-only references, and a commercial cross-reference tool
from Virginia Systems that I didn't test.

> versions of the same doc. Can this be done in InDesign?

ID CS3 has no conditional text, and I'm not aware of a third-party
tool that offers it. The usual workaround is to create the different
versions of content on different layers, and show or hide them as
needed. It's not a good solution for content, product, or audience
variations in a single language, because you really are maintaining
multiple copies of the common content, and have to be careful to avoid
introducing unwanted differences when editing. This is much the same
effort as maintaining one separate file for each version.

For multiple languages, where all content, or at least all text
content, is translated in each variation, layers can work. Text wrap
(FM's Text Runaround object property) is smart about working through
layers, so showing/hiding different language layers with careful
planning may simplify handling graphics in each language) and, BTW, ID
wraps text around all sides of an object if you want, not just three
sides as FM does.

However, another approach is to use ID's XML ability to filter
marked-up XML content. Mostly XML is being used with ID for
variable-data publishing, and other automated production.

There's no dedicated DITA support in ID.

> And what about
> generating a help system for InDesign, is it possible?

There's no tightly-bound partner for help from ID, though again its
XML export is one way to implement help coupled with other third-party
tools. RTF export may be another possibility. I haven't heard anyone
claim to be doing this. Yet.

ID has running header/footer variables, user-defined variables, master
pages (even master pages based on other master pages), multiple
numbering streams (1.1.1.1, and 1,A,ii,b, etc) for lists, figure
captions, etc, as FM has. Page and chapter numbering, footnotes, and
across-file numbering in books, are the same, but ID also can make
multi-page spreads with appropriate page numbers on left and right (or
on spreads of as many as ten pages) - FM can't. This isn't a common
need in technical docs, so it's not a biggie.

ID CS3 books are better than FM's in some ways, the same in some
others, and worse in a few others. ID book files are lists of files,
and instructions for processing them, like FM books. FM's cool feature
of showing filename or first paragraph content in the book list is a
good tool that ID lacks, but ID's Pages panel (like PageMaker's, if
you know PM) shows thumbnail views of the pages in the current file,
as well as identifying the master pages used on each page; you can
identify chapter-opener page thumbnails easily, which is mostly what
showing the first paragraph feature does. You can rearrange ID pages
by drag

Here's the deal:

Smart Text Reflow is one of the "smaller" new features in ID CS4. It's
a preference you need to set, and it's got some options. It adds pages
as you type, and deletes empty ones when you delete content from them,
which isn't often a designer's need.

ID has always had auto-flow for "placed" content (like File > Import >
File in FM). It creates pages as it needs them. You'll need to read
the short passage in Help, when ID CS4 is released.

FrameMaker vs. InDesign, round CS4

2008-09-23 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Sarah: (I also posted on your blog)

"...UNTIL NOW...," as the late movie trailer guy might say, I've been
under Adobe's non-disclosure agreement for ID CS4 pre-release testers.

"...BUT, IN A WORLD..." where disclosure can now be thrown to the
winds, I'll add a few comments.

ID's been sneaking up on FM's long technical-document authoring tool
set for a few releases. ID CS3 added system- and user-defined
variables, running headers, table styles (named table formats), cell
styles, named object styles, and nested styles - the ability to
specify a pattern that applies named character styles to matching
content within paragraphs - and it improved numbered lists a HUGE
amount.

ID CS4 is closing in with new additions that matter to technical
authors: cross-references, conditional text, smart text reflow
(real-time adding new pages as needed, and deleting them when empty),
along with boosting the already-powerful nested paragraph feature to
include, selecting by a GREP pattern as you noted, and also by line
number within the paragraph, so the nth line will get the character
style you specify, no matter how it wraps or flows, and the ability to
repeat (or loop) applying the sequence of styles (sort of a macro
ability.)

FrameMaker users who don't use CS3-level Adobe Illustrator or
Photoshop will need time to adjust to Adobe's corporate user
interface, and learning new ways to perform familiar tasks.

Plus, just because something's on the package label, trust - but
verify. Don't assume.

Here are a few FrameMaker features that you may miss:

 * Run-in paragraphs
 * Side headings and side-heading area
 * Paragraphs that flow with text and also straddle multiple columns,
and multiple columns AND side heads
 * Table sorting
 * No Track Changes
 * No logical conditional text expressions - AND and NOT were added in FM 8
 * No "size matters" inter-paragraph spacing - FM uses the larger of
space below and space above for paragraph spacing. ID, like most other
applications, adds the space below and space above, which makes it
more complicated to set up paragraph formats that will space as you
need, regardless of who-follows-what.
 * Frame above /below paragraphs can contain graphics, text, or a mix.
ID's rules above/below paragraph are great, but they aren't
containers.

Here are a few FrameMaker features in ID CS4 that are a little more
complicated to do:
 * To jump to a cross-reference source from within FrameMaker, instead
of Ctrl+Alt+Click, you click in the Cross-Reference panel
 * Index markers support multiple-level entries, but can't create
multiple entries in one marker like FM's ":" technique
 * Without run-in paragraphs, you need to strategize to create TOC
entries from a partial heading

There's a very good third-party conversion tool that converts MIF
files to InDesign (dtptools.com). However, migrating FrameMaker
content to InDesign depends on what FrameMaker are in them for which
InDesign has no direct counterpart, whether you use a commercial tool
or do it manually. It's something like converting Microsoft Word files
to FrameMaker. There's work to be done.

The conversion tool's nearly-clonelike reproduction of FM pages in ID
comes from its minute adjustments of paragraph formats, meaning many
formats are overridden uniquely. Most of the tweaks are paragraph
settings - space between, run-in, side heading, straddle headings,
frame above/below, table-cell properties.

One of the greatest ID features from early on is the INFINITE UNDO
UNDO UNDO! It doesn't clear its history when you perform certain
actions. You can experiment nearly forever, and roll back to "square
one." ID saves every action you perform - an instant autosave; after a
crash, it can restore almost every last one.

If you're considering ID as a replacement for FM, test-drive ID in
parallel with an FM project or two, to see if your wishes are rewarded
or exceeded, and if your needs are served. During my testing, I
compared the long-document features so much that I decided to write a
book on the core issues for FrameMaker users moving to Indesign.

FM Mac diehards - don't forget that ID works on Mac OS X, both Intel
and PowerPC G4/G5 chips. FM's stuck at 7.0 on Classic or OS 9 on Mac.

Element boundaries

2008-09-24 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Roger:

The property is saved in each file.

You can set the property for multiple files by selecting them in a
book window and using View > Show (or Hide) Element Boundaries, then
perform Shift+File > Save All Files In Book.

Space!........ABOVE & BELOW!!

2008-09-24 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Darren:

It's a good idea to avoid surprises caused by the addition of space
below/above consecutive paragraphs.

I'm not sure if you know that FrameMaker is nearly unique* in its
method of inter-paragraph space settings. It's about "size matters."
FrameMaker honors the larger of space below and space above to set the
space between them. Almost all other text-creation tools combine the
spaces. The additive method requires more thought about designing for
many possible combinations of consecutive paragraph formats.

*I believe that Ventura Publisher offers the option to work either
larger one wins, or additive.

InDesign and FrameMaker Text Entry Comparison (WAS: FrameMaker vs. InDesign, round CS4)

This is a good start, but, wait, there's more to it. While the "power
click" brings an InDesign master-page text frame to the body page,
where it works both like and differently from FM, you'll soon fill it
to overflowing, and then...

* You can only type to the bottom of the first text frame; additional
typing is "overset," as typographers call it, indicated by a red "+"
in the lower-right text-frame border, if the Screen Mode is Normal
(not Preview), and the text frame is selected (use the black arrow
tool, aka Selection tool.)

* In FM, it's called "overflow," indicated by a horizontal black line
at the bottom of the frame, if View > Borders is enabled. Because FM
documents typically are designed with auto-connect properties that
cause filled main text frames (like Flow A) to create new text frames
on new pages, it's uncommon to overflow main text flow frames
unintentionally. Main text frames on disconnected FM pages, or those
drawn on any body pages with the text frame tool, do overflow, rather
than connecting automatically to new frames on new pages. You can
connect disconnected text frames manually, using Format > Customize
Layout > Connect Text Frames, to thread text flows across frames and
pages. This is similar to the method of flowing stories across frames
and pages in most layout programs.

* In InDesign earlier than CS4, to add content across pages by typing,
you'd need to manually add pages and connect ("thread") the text
frames manually.

* You can work in the Story Editor window in all InDesign versions,
instead of a layout window, and enter text without concern about
getting stuck when a text frame becomes overset. The Story Editor
indicates where overset begins, but it doesn't stop you from adding
new content.

* In CS4, there's a new feature, Auto Text Reflow, that makes ID work
as you're expecting, based on your experience in FrameMaker, or other
non-layout-centric DTP tools and word-processors.

* ID and FM can do many of the same things, but they often work
differently, as in this example. If you're giving ID a good workout
and get stuck, these InDesign-specific resources will be helpful:

* The Adobe User-to-User InDesign Macintosh and Windows forums (often
the postings aren't platform-specific, so you need to read both to see
all questions and answers), and the Lassosoft InDesign list. Adobe.com
offers a lot of video tutorials and other resources on all the Adobe
products.

* Don't overlook the Help

* Visit the third-party InDesign book descriptions at Amazon.com. Two
very popular dedicated InDesign titles are "Adobe InDesign CS3 Visual
Quick Start," by Sandee Cohen, and "Real World InDesign CS3," by Olav
Kvern and David Blatner.

* These ID-specific resources don't address FM-to-ID issues, so if you
find that applying the FrameMaker side of your brain InDesign causes
headaches, post your questions here.

Structure View won't appear

2008-09-26 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Ben:

It's possible that the window is opening off screen. This can be
caused by lowering your screen resolution, or changing to a smaller
monitor, between the time you closed FM with the window far
off-center, and opening FM in the smaller screen.

Have you tried using the Windows control menu - the one that comes up
when you click the icon in the top-left corner of the application's
(FM's) menu bar, choosing Move, then using the cursor arrow keys to
move a possibly-off-screen structure window bqck "home?" The structure
window may be to the left, right, top, or bottom.

I believe the window settings are saved in one of the maker.ini files
(there are two, one for user, one for application; use Windows Search
to find them. Make a safety copy, then pen in a text editor or FM and
look for windows location settings: four pairs of numbers separated by
commas, to define the corner locations. I think if you change the
first one to 10,10 it locates the top-left corner ten pixels down and
ten pixels in from the left. Save the file - IF IN FM, REMEMBER TO
SAVE AS TEXT! Quit and restart FM. If this messes things up, rename
maker.ini to xmaker.ini, and rename the safety copy to maker.ini, then
restart FM.

Backup folder in Frame 7.0?

I would strongly suggest giving the folders numeric names in the
mmdd format (e.g. 20080929) then you will be easily able to find the

And building on that, you can, occasionally, convert them into a snapshot
backup directory.
Just move the files to a date-stamped directory of your choice:

/project/August_10/
/project/August_20/
/project/August_30/

As you reopen and save files in FM, the .backup.fms are created again, so
you have both a collection of last-saved files and incremental backup
directories.

InDesign's PDF export offers security options. This suggests that it's
possible to create the appropriate security code when creating the
PDF. So, perhaps there's a FrameMaker add-on or plug-in that might
offer the same options.

[Free Framers] FrameMaker 9 screen-refresh problems with VMWare Fusion 2 on Intel Mac with OS X 10.5.6 "Leopard"

2009-04-27 Thread Peter Gold
[Cross-posted to "Framers (E-mail)" ,
FrameMaker Discussion Forum ,
adobe.framemaker at forum.adobe.com]

Thanks to all who responded. Apologies for the delay in replying; I
wanted to be sure the problem was solved, which seems to be the case.

Wayne's suggestion seems to be the one that works. FrameMaker wasn't
the only thing affected; it was just the first application I tried;
its history of screen redraw issues erroneously made it the first
usual suspect. Later, I noticed that the same redraw issues existed in
Windows XP under Fusion 2 with my memory settings.

I think the principle is something like:

The memory setting for VMware Fusion controls the guest operating
system's environment - XP, in this case, and the host platform - Mac,
in this case - manages the memory needs of the application(s) running
in the VMware Fusion environment, as if it were just another Mac
application.

So, this may help me delay giving in to the hardware lust lurking in
me; I won't buy that 6GB RAM upgrade from Other World Computing right
away! But, there's this attractive 7200 RPM replacement notebook
drive that's...

On my MacBook Pro laptop, although it's got 512 MB of VRAM, I thought
the problem might also involve the refreshing of its 17" screen with
its many pixels, so I also lowered the Windows display setting to
16-bit color from the default 32-bit. I haven't seen any graphics look
bad enough for me to try setting it back to 32-bit, yet.

As usual, Les has hit the nail! It's a good solution unless your style
guide is iron-clad in its support of the common usage of enclosing
quoted material in double quotes. Although these citations are quotes,
they are also source names; it's common to use italics or other
emphasis property to identify source names, such as these heading
titles.

I'd add the suggestion that you create a uniquely-named character
format, for example, "head_cite," that applies only the unique text
properties to the referenced material; this makes it easy to modify
the appearance, if necessary, without affecting "Emphasis, bold" or
other defined character formats.

FM9 and two monitors

2009-08-05 Thread Peter Gold
On Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 12:10 PM, Mike Wickham wrote:

> You can even have multiple FM documents open on
> multiple monitors.

Although FM still doesn't offer multiple window views of a single
document in FM 9, it's always been possible to launch FM multiple
times, and open additional copies of one document for viewing
different parts of the same document at the same time. When you open
an open document in another FM instance, FM displays a message that
the document is open, and offers the options of opening an untitled
editable copy, a view-only copy, or opening the document for editing
again (with a caution.) The safest choice is to open a read-only copy,
because you can copy content from it by pressing Ctrl (Shift+Ctrl if
using FM in a Windows virtual environment on a Macintosh) and dragging
to select text for copying. Working with only one editable window and
one or more uneditable windows avoids the problem of saving the wrong
version over the correct one. In FM 9, the Track Text Edits feature is
very helpful to keep things straight; in earlier releases, you can
apply condition tags, save progressive edited versions and use File >
Utilities > Compare Documents to monitor changes.

Multiple monitors make the process easier, but you can customize your
working view on a single monitor by Right Clicking on the Windows task
bar to present the option of tiling active (non-minimized)
applications, similar to tiling document windows in a single
application.

Is it possible that either you've imported the PDF of the chart into
the frame that held the drawn graphic chart, or you've inadvertently
copied a frame on top of the frame that contains the chart? I suspect
this happened when you dragged the frame on the master page, if, while
you held Ctrl to change the text pointer to the graphic pointer in
order to select the frame, you dragged the frame with Ctrl still
pressed.

Been there, done that, trained people not to do that. A good way to

FM9 and Text Frames

2009-08-19 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Alison:

The space above the first paragraph in a text frame is ignored; space
below the last paragraph is also ignored. You can achieve the space
above by one of these approaches:

* Create a named graphic frame of the desired height on the document's
Reference Page, and in the Frame Above property in the Advance panel
of the Paragraph Designer, for the callout paragraph format, specify
the reference frame's name, to attach the frame above the paragraph.
Look up Reference Frame in FM Help for details.

* Create a character format with everything set to As Is, except set
the font size to a size that will create the extra space above. You'll
need to iterate this a few times, after you do the next step.

In the paragraph designer's Autonumber Format text box, for the
callout paragraph format, enter "\st" without quotes; this will create
a thin space in the place where autonumbers usually go. Choose the
character format you created with only a font size; this will make the
thin space taller than the main font size of the paragraph.

Look up autonumbering in FM help, then choose Specify a Special Bullet
Symbol, to see how to use special character formats with autonumbers.

Your documentation team should have a formatted TOC and index template
for the doc set you're working on. Check with your teammates and
manager for their location. When you find them, open them, and open
the unformatted generated TOC and index you created. With the
unformatted TOC active, use File > Import > Formats and choose the TOC
template to import its formatting; do the same from the unformatted

The paper size has to be "larger enough" than the page size to display
the marks. IOW, a slightly-larger paper size may not have enough room
for the marks. Try a tabloid or larger paper size.

Disappearing anchored frames: strange FrameMaker bug

2009-12-07 Thread Peter Gold
Just a quick thought: With View > Text Symbols ON, does any frame in
the text flow display the black line overflow indicator at the bottom
of the frame? This might shed a bit more light on where to seek the
missing frame. It's a bit counter-intuitive because usually this only
occurs in the last frame in a flow, one that lacks the Autoflow
property to create a "next" frame for the overflow; it sounds as if
this isn't the case for you.

Conditional Text used within a table with endnotes.

2009-12-14 Thread Peter Gold
I don't have FrameMaker available right now, so I'm working from
memory, but AFAIK, there's no Special > Endnote command in FrameMaker.
Endnotes in FrameMaker are created by manually typing the notes
somewhere in the current file, or a different file, in paragraphs that
include the auto-numbering property. Usually end notes are placed at
the end of the current file, or the separate file is placed at the end
of a book. You can place the end notes after a table, if you like. The
end note references are created by inserting cross-references to the
notes with Special > Cross-Reference, using a cross-reference format
that captures the auto-number.

Showing or hiding the cross-reference reference numbers - in the
conditional table rows, in this case - has no effect on the
auto-numbered paragraphs that are the cross-reference sources. If you
want the end notes to appear and disappear when their reference
numbers are shown and hidden, conditionalize the notes.

If you want the end notes to remain in place and renumber when the
conditonalized reference numbers are hidden or shown, you'll need to
invent a strategy.

However, I'm wondering if you're using table footnotes - they appear
after a table. The visibility of table footnotes should depend upon
the visibility of the table footnote source content. If you're using
table footnotes, are you saying that the table footnotes aren't
showing/hiding in response to the showing/hiding of the source
content, and they are not renumbering?

"Anchoring" Callout Text to a Figure

2009-12-17 Thread Peter Gold
If I understand the original poster's process, importing a graphic
with an insertion point in text creates an anchored frame. This is why
the graphic flows with the text.

It shouldn't be necessary to group text lines or text frames with the
graphic in the anchored frame, for the callouts to move with the
anchored frame; the callouts just need to inside the anchored frame.
The best way to assure that they are is to be sure that the mouse
pointer is inside the boundary of the anchored frame when you drag the
callout, then release the mouse. To select the text frame callout,
press Ctrl when you point the mouse over the text frame; this changes
the cursor to a graphic pointer. When the text frame is selected, you
can release Ctrl and just drag the callout inside the anchored frame
boundary. You can position the callouts within the anchored frame by
dragging, or by selecting and using the arrow keys to move by one
pixel per key press, or use Shift+arrow keys to move by five pixels.

There are at least three problems when learning something new that has
some similarity to something you already have experience in:

* When to stop expecting that past experience with x will work the same way in y

* When to start expecting that you're moving past the complete novice stage

* When to apply the Serenity Prayer "...the wisdom to know the difference."

Good plan, good attitude! The more information you can provide when
asking a question, the more useful the answers will likely be the
first time around. Usually this includes what operating system, what
version of FrameMaker (in Help > About FrameMaker, there's a number
like 9.something followed by p something; all of this comprises the
version number.)

Since you mentioned that your expectations from working with "X,"
perhaps it would help to name X; some of us may have experience with
X, and may have some painfully-learned experience that can help you
make the transition to FrameMaker.

Hi, Jim:

If I understand your situation correctly, I believe multiple
references to the same footnote should use the same reference number
in the main text or table cell text.

Using this model, your second reference to footnote 2 should also
display 2, so you may want to change your approach and use the
cross-reference technique to capture the number 2 from the second
footnote, rather than faking an increment to 3.

If a new footnote reference is inserted before footnote 1 or 2,
they'll increment correctly; the cross-reference to multiple instances
of 2 may require a cross-reference update action, but otherwise, as
any cross-reference, these are self-maintaining.

Unless it's possible to fake the two tables as a single table, I'm out of ideas.

Hi, from bleak warm soggy Minneapolis!

I'm not clear on what you really are looking for. If your employer is
Lockheed Martin, they should provide the FM 6.x +SGML for you to work
on their projects. If this project is a freelance project for another
client, then they may expect you to have the software.

As Art notes, the SGML smarts are built into FM 7.x and later. The
Developer's Guide PDF in the installation has the info you need,
though it's not a tutorial approach. The structured application and
files you create are very likely convertable to FM6 + SGML, by saving
as Maker Interchange Format (MIF). I don't believe there's any
different structured functionality or features in FM 7.x or later,
from FM 6 + SGML. However I believe there were changes to the
programming language in the SDK (Software Development Kit) that
requires rewriting the add-on tools you'd create with the SDK.

Your status as a registered owner of a FM release has no bearing on
whether you can buy a licensed copy of an older release from Adobe or
other authorized reseller - it all depends on whether there's any
stock. You can buy a used copy from a licensed owner; you'll need to
vet the seller and the license to be sure it's not a fake or stolen
license, and the seller should fill out an Adobe transfer of ownership
form, so you can register your purchase legally. In addition, you'll
want to verify that the disks are complete and usable, because
replacements are scarce.

There's an Adobe User-to-User Structured FrameMaker forum you may want
to look into for more focused assistance.

You'll probably get more useful responses to your questions if you
provide some context on your work situation . For example, are you
expected to be developing or refining structured FM templates? Or,
will mature templates be provided for you, and you'll only need to use
them to create or maintain content with them?

Numbering question

2009-02-24 Thread Peter Gold
Look up autonumber in FM Help. The most pertinent topic is:

Using multiple counters in an autonumber format

but most of the topics are relevant.

In File > New > Explore Standard Templates, the outline templates are
examples of different numbering styles. Choose Show Sample for each
outline template to display examples of the numbering. With the
Paragraph Designer open to the Numbering properties pane, move your
insertion pointer through the example paragraphs, and observe the
paragraph tag name and its Autonumber format to see the formats and
their results.

pilcrow before tag name in character catalog

2009-01-08 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Milan:

It is possible to use the pilcrow character in a FM format tag name.
Perhaps the document's creator used this as a convention.

To verify this, select some text tagged with this format and open the

Hi, Lea:

You asked:

Have you considered adding the files to a new book file? You can open
one or multiple selected files from a book window.

Another option is to create a folder of shortcuts for these files and
place it on the desktop or wherever it's most convenient to find, then
open the file(s) with the shortcut(s).

Text Insets Appear In TOC

2009-01-19 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Joseph:

Is there a compelling reason NOT to tag non-feature H1s with a name
like H1NonF, and extract only regular H1s for the TOC?

You can create a book file for all the non-feature documents and use
find/replace to replace all H1 with H1NonF in one pass, by:

* Make secure backups of all files involved.

* Then open and save all the files you'll be working with, so that any
changes can be reverted with File > Revert, or, from the book window,
press Shift+File > Close All Files in Book, and click No (don't save)
for each, then close the book file with no save, and start over.
Alternatively, with no book file selected, press Shift+File > Close
All Open Files, and click No for all.

* From the book window, use Shift+File > Open All Files in Book (they
open minimized), so that any changes won't be saved until you
explicitly save the changed files, or close all and reopen and try
again.

* In a file that has non-feature H1s, with the insertion point in a H1
paragraph, create and apply the H1NonF paragraph format.

* Use Edit > Copy Special > Paragraph Format to place the H1NonF on
the clilpboard.

* Use Edit > Find > Paragraph Tag > H1; whole word only (to avoid
picking up H1something) to find a H1 paragraph. Choose by Pasting from
the Replace pop-up menu.

* Click Replace, then Find Next.

Do a few like this to verify that it works the way you want. When
you're satisfied, select Document or Book and click Replace All. The
"Not Undoable" message is correct, but I've outlined the
open-all-files / close-all-files-without-saving method above to
revert, if necessary.

Outline

2009-01-28 Thread Peter Gold
Here's a method that nobody's mentioned yet. It's not complete or
perfect, but it may be useful:

* Create a TOC that extracts all the heading paragraph formats that
you want in an outline. Be sure to check Make Hypertext Links. The TOC
can be for a single document or a book.

* Modify the *TOC paragraph formats to indent the way you want.

* Format the TOC page to a narrow column, and a height that's readable
when zoomed to full-height on your screen.

* Set the zoom to Fit Page to Text Frame.

* Arrange your screen with the narrow outline frame next to the
document page frame.

* Use Frame's Ctrl+Alt+Click on a heading in the TOC to move the
insertion point to that heading, so you can edit at that location.

* Regenerate the TOC

NOTES:

- To make the links in the TOC active with a single click, instead of
with Ctrl+Alt+Click: tap Escape, tap Shift+F, tap k. The same sequence
restores editabiity.

- To reuse the outline TOC, save it to a new name. This is handy if
you've moved stuff and then need to restore the original order.

- Save the "real" TOC with a new name, and save a copy of the narrow
outline TOC to a new name. When you want to generate the real TOC,
close the outline TOC and delete or rename it, then open the real TOC,
save it to the correct name, and generate.

Soliciting hardware recommendations

2009-07-14 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Donna:

You can postpone buying Windows by installing Windows 7 Release
Candidate 1 public beta. I'm using this with Fusion 2 and TCS2 on a
2.4gHz MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.7 (latest update to "Leopard") No
significant problems in FM 9.x and Acrobat 9.x in the TCS2. Initially
I had problems with screen rewriting. Mostly this was due to setting
the Fusion memory amount higher than needed (1.0 GB seems sufficient),
and also not having enough system RAM; I had 3 GB, which left only 2
GB for the Mac OS. Replacing my 1 GB RAM chip with a 2 GB chip from
Other World Computing for around $30, gave back 3 GB for for Mac OS X,
and retained 1 GB for Fusion 2.

Jenny: you might want to look at Google's Calendar.

Art Campbell says it this way:

"I agree, four is as many as you need (and, I believe the most I've
ever seen in a published book) -- if you think you need more, it may
be because of an organizational problem."

I guess Tufte didn't verbally indicate "*" and "" with his comment.
His methods of providing multiple layers of information - sparklines,
common measurement references across graphics that vary in scale, and
various graphic schemes that indicate data and information
relationships - present much of the additional levels of information,
without additional heading levels. IOW, "organizational problem"
solutions.

cross book cross-references

2009-03-02 Thread Crimmin, Peter
Regarding cross-references that span across books.

BACKGROUND

I reviewed framer archives and I'm able to create functioning
cross-references in the resulting PDF files.
For example, a cross-reference in myBook1.pdf can find its target inside
of myBook2.pdf.

PROBLEM

But... this only works when generating the PDFs from FrameMaker. Are
there any WebWorks Automap users who use this feature?

When I generate the PDFs with Automap, the cross-references attempt to
find their targets in the individual chapter files instead of in the
generated book file. For example, a cross reference in myBook1.pdf
attempts to find its target inside myChapter2.pdf, which does not exist
(because it is generated inside myBook2.pdf).

Solutions?

If the PDF was made using Mac's Preview application, this could be the problem;
check document info for Creator.

If you get the same error when trying to Save As with all documents,
the Acrobat installation may be corrupted.

Is it possible that the new releases use more memory, and are running

You'll need to create a file that looks this way to print it this way.
You can create such a file by importing the individual files as text
insets into one "container" file. Look up text insets in FM Help.

Using Framers to network for job-hunting?

Framers

Seems like it is an appropriate time for a SpinOff [JOBS] list...
This economic storm is going to be with us awhile, therefore,
I suggest we'll share a lot of interest in a Spin Off List...

Look for the PDF or .fm document "Customizing Frame Products" in the
onlinemanuals directory in your FM installation tree. It may be in the
fminit directory. I believe that Unix FM is the only FM version that
permits customizing the fonts in dialog boxes. I may be wrong on this
- it may only customize fonts in catalog titles, like Character Format
catalog and Paragraph Format catalog, and menu titles and options.

Many unix FM properties are configurable via x-resources. I seem to
recall that an x-resource can set fonts.

Another approach is to lower your screen resolution to show less real
estate at a larger size.

Printing Structured View in Frame 8

I'm on my Mac now, so I can't try it myself. If you don't have SnagIt,

Anyway/tool to update cross-ref defs easily

2009-03-26 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Kanti:

* Depending on how you've defined the cross-reference formats to
capture the compound chapter-page numbers, you may find that modifying
the cross-reference formats and importing them across your books
works. (Back-up all files before experimenting.)

* markerworker is a free FM plug-in that might work for you. It's not
been updated in a long time, so it may not work with FM 8 or 9.

Find it at: http://www.freeframers.org/freeware/cud/

OT: Adobe TCS2--RoboHelp 8 integration with FrameMaker 9

2009-05-06 Thread Peter Kelly
Hello everybody,

I just tried evaluating the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and
found that RoboHelp 8 in particular did not produce consistent results.
I managed to corrupt every project I created only by continuously making
changes in the style mappings from FM to RH and then regenerating.
Sometimes the TOC would not generate at all. Has anyone been using RH8
and has anyone been able to get good results? If so what are you doing
right? Yes I watched the tutorial Adobe produced on FM9 and RH8, which
helped improve my results but it doesn't change the fact that RH8 seems
unstable.

Best,
Peter
