Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2019 and the limit of Windows 10?

2024-02-21 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

Since my last email on this subject, I discovered that the Adobe
ExtendScript application is still a 32-bit application, and there are
times when a regular file Open() function call will just error.

After a great deal of investigation, we have determined the cause of the
crash was due to the FrameMaker console window being closed.
I have always promoted that console windows should *never* be closed as
warnings are there for a reason!

Since you are using ExtendScript, an alternative approach may be to script
saving each component to XML individually then use XSLT to combine them.

Subject: [Framers] FrameMaker 2019 and the limit of Windows 10?

Hello Framers,

I have been investigating a problem reported by one of my customers.
They have 1 book file containing 1554 FrameMaker documents, plus 2
FrameMaker generated documents.

They have managed to publish their book file to PDF, but when they try
exporting the book to XML, FrameMaker crashes badly.

I have chopped the book up, and it appears that FrameMaker baulks after
processing around 700 files - sometimes with Internal Error, sometimes with
just hanging the app. A large number [>1400] of the FrameMaker documents
contain imported by reference graphics. Even with removing the mount point
of the graphics [so FrameMaker will show a gray box instead], and also with
setting the View > Hide Graphics option on each file,

I tried using ExtendScript to read content from each of the files, but after
approximately 710 files, I received the FrameMaker warning dialog:
Insufficient memory to display the dialog box. Close one or more windows and
try again.
i.e. Insufficient memory to display the dialog box. Close one or more
windows and try again.

According to Windows 10 [64-bit], the Task Manager indicates memory usage on
the workstation is 3.6Gb out of an available 12.1Gb.

Has anyone here experienced problems when dealing with such large book
files?

2024-02-16 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Rick,

Thank you for the quick response.
I have checked, and I am using the 64-bit version of Adobe FrameMaker 2019.

My company's software uses the Frame FDK to connect with FrameMaker.

I have deliberately disabled the software "plugin" to troubleshoot the
behaviour in structured mode FrameMaker, but as I can't even process all
the files in the book, I suspect there is a system limit.

Hi,

I recently upgraded from Frame 8 to Frame 2019. I've hit my first hiccup.

I have subtopics that are comprised either partly or entirely of conditional
text. I just attempted to do something that was seamless in FM8; insert a
standalone ToC in selected chapters of my book. It's not complex. There are
about a dozen conditional tags, 4 of which are used the most. It used to work
fine...

Now I find that all conditional text, whether it's characters or the paragraph
mark itself, is dropped from the ToC.

Example, using asterisks to simulate conditional text and numbers to represent
page numbers:

TOPIC
Subtopic 1
*Subtopic* 2
Sub*topic* 3

Becomes:

Yeah, you can sell the license.

Whether a Suite upgrade is worth it depends entirely on how often you use
what tools... what kind of work are you doing?

[Framers] Framemaker 2019 and Tech Comm Suite 2017 and 2019.

2020-02-13 Thread Richard Melanson
Hi Everyone,

I have Tech Comm Suite 2017 with FrameMaker 2017, I then separately upgraded
JUST FrameMaker to 2019. I would now like to upgrade the rest of the products
in my 2017 Suite to 2019 but Adobe says they cannot do this unless I pay for
upgrading FrameMaker again.

I have no hard feelings with Adobe that is their business practice. I am
looking for suggestions on how to get to a complete 2019 suite. Can I sell my
current 2019 FrameMaker license, I am stumped.

And is it even worth upgrading, anyone have 2019 that they can share an opinion
with me.

Thanks a million Everyone.

Subject: [Framers] Getting an old version of FM

Dear all,

Fortunately i have put aside FM-installation files since I install FM (version
4).
Hence I do not need to search for these in the net. But any other person will
have to.
It's easy to find Adobe's site with the updates of previous versions:
https://supportdownloads.adobe.com/product.jsp?product=22&platform=Windows

But wherefrom do you get the base version? Only from illegal sources such as
https://rahim-soft.com in Kandahar, Afghanistan?
For curiosity I did so and discovered that in the download package there is a
tool included to create a registration key... A help video describes how to use
this illegal method. And the FM installation files turn out to be few days
younger than those in my archive (which had been distributed by Adobe).

It seems that Adobe has now opened a channel to older versions:
https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/kb/downloaded-older-app.html offers to
chat via https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html - because in many cases (at least
in my case) not all older versions are listed in Adobe's order history on the
users account. Or the user (consultant) needs an older version to support a
customer who has that version.

Has anyone of you used this official channel to get an older version of FM, for
example, version 10?

2019-05-02 Thread Gust, Dieter
Sorry bad English - instead of exclamation marks I should say quotation marks

> I just tested FM 2019 15.0.3.603

"If you use "quotation marks" around the numeric sequence, the search works the
way you want it to."
And Yes if you insert Index entries for any of these product designations like
"123.456".
HTML would include an index search.

Hi Winfried,

additional answers:

5.) "Most of our products have order codes like 123.4567. When I want to
search for such order codes, the . is interpreted as separator between two
words. As if I want to search for 123 and 4567. I do not know a solution."

I just tested FM 2019 15.0.3.603

If you use exclamation marks round about the numeric sequence search works the
way you asked for.

6.) In my tests in update 15.03.603 search term highlighting works!

Hi Winfried,

you recognized the different layout/formatting concept between Desktop
FrameMaker with Paper/PDF Editing view and the different HTML layout and box
model.

1.) "I do not know which font will be used. "

Font substitution you may define in the resulting CSS. Once defined you can use
the CSS as part of the general conversion settings

2.) a) "Graphics conversion with SVG is best"

Sure it remains SVG

2.b) "However, if you have some other objects in the same anchored frame,
then you should convert to raster images. I find the results much better than
I expected."

This is the standard approach as the layer concept (as defined in FM) is not
supported by the HTML conversion process The quality has been dramatically
improved upon the several updates

3.) "When you have tables with table titles with several paragraphs, then you
have to use a work-around. HTML allows only a single paragraph."

See here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/10987920#10987920

4:) "I do not know how I can define which text goes into a topic title. E.g.
when my paragraph to start a new topic has a table anchor, then the whole
anchor paragraph and the whole table text will be in the topic

  title."

Well that's clear, as the table anchor defines the position of the content of
the table within the text flow. This table anchor is a DTP relict.

Therefore in my templates tables must be anchored in an separate paragraphs
called table anchor.

In addition topic title" is a very difficult term which is often misunderstood:
For a customer a topic title always is the first paragraph in a HTML Topic and
therefore it shall start with a heading.

If the topic content does not start with a heading the technical writer created
a structural mistake.

In technical aspects the topic title might be interpreted as the HTML title
tag. Therefore the conversion or topic creation process clearly must take into
account that the first paragraph (heading) and the topic title will get the
identical content.

A third aspect might be seen in the filename of the HTML topic: This can be but
only "by accident" identical with the topic title but never should be taken as
the standard topic title!

5.) "Most of our products have order codes like 123.4567. When I want to
search for such order codes, the . is interpreted as separator between two
words. As if I want to search for 123 and 4567. I do not know a solution."

6.) In my tests (FM 2019) using "wx.yz" seems to work, but highlighting didn't
work - I'll ask the FM development team regarding this issue Regards Dieter

When I enter "125.xyz" as search string, then _all_ order codes with "125"

However, only 125.xyz should have been found.
It does not matter, if I change the option "Enable Substring Search" in the
Search settings.
Or in the converted HTML5 change "Display results with all search words".
The solution user has to enclose the whole text in double quotes. Then this
works.

Here are some comments.

Betreff: Re: [Framers] [FrameMaker 2019] Customizing responsive HTML5 output:
best practices and good documentation?

Hi Yves,

I also started to convert my unstructured documentation to HTML5.
And I do not have any tutorials or best practices. I am still experimenting.
I will look for more information in the online help and in the various forums
and blogs.
My first impressions and questions:

o Default settings are good.

o I do not know which font will be used. Probably my font will be replaced
by something else. However, I do not know, which fonts are on Android
or iOS. Is there are default replacement?

o Graphics conversion with SVG is best. However, if you have
some other objects in the same anchored frame, then you should
convert to raster images. I find the results much better than I expected.

o When you have tables with table titles with several paragraphs, then
you have to use a work-around. HTML allows only a single paragraph.
  See here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/10987920#10987920

o I do not know how I can define which text goes into a topic title.
E.g. when my paragraph to start a new topic has a table anchor, then
the whole anchor paragraph and the whole table text will be in the topic
  title.

o Most of our products have order codes like 123.4567. When I want
to search for such order codes, the . is interpreted as separator between
two words. As if I want to search for 123 and 4567. I do not know a solution.

o Of course I had written documents with a certain layout. I have to find
solutions for some of my paragraph layouts (e.g. right-aligned tab stops).

o I adapt a copy of the regular settings file on our network. I do not know,
if there is a standard solution, where this settings file should reside.

Best regards

Winfried

Hi group

This problem seems to happen only when I generate webhelp from a bookmap.
When I generate webhelp from a regular ditamap, the ToC looks fine.

ideas how I can get a "real" ToC in there?

Many thanks in advance.

Absolutely. However, it will then be six months or a year before I upgrade. I'm
not about to give them money on faith that it might be fixed, as in its current
form it's unusable for my needs. There's also the possibility that the cure

My guess is Adobe took Windows out of the PDF-generation loop so that
Microsoft updates or selecting the wrong printer driver can't break
it.

This is the 1.0 release of that code. Give them six months or a year

The new PDF creation mechanism and its inflexibility is a complete dealbreaker
for me. I need to be able to easily create my PDFs in different locations with
different names on the fly. Having neither of those aspects settable at output
time nor saved on a per-file basis is utterly dain bramaged.

As much as I dislike the idiosyncrasies and instability of Frame 2017 over
Frame 2012, I won't be proceeding with Frame 2019 until/unless the PDF
functionality is fixed.

I expect the scaling issues to be a comparatively easier fix.

For now Frame 2019 is DOA (for me) and I'm sticking with Frame 2017.

Subject: [Framers] FrameMaker 2019 Issues and First Look

TCS 2019
I have purchased and installed this new version on two Win 10 computers, fully
updated with version 1803. One is a Surface Book with a native resolution of
3000 x 2000. The other is a Surface Pro 3 with a native resolution of 2160 x
1440. Both have a 2nd monitor of 1920 x 1080. This is now a 64 bit program.

*The initial download from Adobe failed, showing complete when in reality it
did not complete, making it impossible to install. An Adobe tech did a “back
door” alternate process to fix that, and was helpful with the download and
install.

Thoughts and issues so far for FrameMaker 2019 include:
The display scaling is broken. The main high-res monitor is great, with 200%
text scaling on the Book and 150% on the Pro 3. But when you move the window to
the 2nd monitor it does not rescale, making the text, menus, etc. huge. All
other apps, including Frame 2017 work as expected. This makes Frame 2019 almost
unusable on the 2nd monitor, or imagine, on any lower res monitor. 1080 is not
the newest, but is not old either. It is awful at even the lowest text display
setting of 100%. Frame 2017 had some display issues, but the scaling worked
fine.

The PDF engine is a complete remake. The TCS uses Acrobat 2017, the latest
version. The processing no longer uses the distiller. It is all internal. Frame
“Save As” PDF does not allow you to choose your file name or storage location.
The location must be set first in the Publish pod and is not held on a file
basis. Frame Print Setup does allow you to choose an output folder, but the
Publish output setting overrides it, so I see no value there. The only purpose
for the distiller now seems to be to process postscript files to a PDF. Making
a PDF in Word, Excel, etc. does allow choices for name, location, etc.

You must set the Win 10 file associations to use Acrobat 2017 as a default for
the PDF extension. If you don’t, you get nothing; no file, no error message.
This may be the issue for Susan Corcoran on her Thursday post of blank PDF.

So, overall, settings and management and creation of PDF with Frame 2019 needs
work. Lots of it. Very confusing and convoluted with lots of broken code and
different places to set things, some of which do not work. They did not get the
interface between PDF in and out of Frame correct. Settings often do not “take”
because they are stepped on by the Publish function.

The color management is now totally automatic. There is no choice of RGB or
CMYK anywhere. Evidently the new engine determines the color model for each
graphic and uses it for processing. This is an improvement if it works. This
was another of Susan's issues.

So the fixes needed include:
*Display scaling across monitors with different resolution. (High Priority)
*Save As PDF needs to work as it did in Frame 2017. Publish functions should be
an alternative, not a requirement. The Frame settings should have priority and
not default to the Publish Pod settings.

As a workaround right now, most of us will probably use the Publish pod for
everything. A real pain.
-Choose the Source Document
-Choose the output type (PDF)
-Create or Choose a settings file that is what you want -Choose an Output
Folder -Hit the “Generate selected Output” Icon in the pod -Hit the “View
Output” Icon as desired.

Wow. This is an improvement? Before I could set up the PDF in Frame once for a
file and it would work for that file every time, and I could choose a file name
and location if desired. The default file name and folder was always the Frame
name and Frame storage location. This was much better.

The above is a quick overview of a quick look at TCS 2019. There may be
settings and methods to fix some of this that I have not learned yet.

Your input is appreciated.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2019 Issues and First Look

2018-08-30 Thread Oran Petersen
In answer to Caroline's question below:
Ever since day-one the rule has been that you should have only one version of
Acrobat on your machine. When I was working for a large company managing this
stuff, one of my biggest issues was those who intentionally or accidently
loaded two version on their machine, which usually destroyed the ability to
successfully create a PDF that worked correctly. Even Reader and full Acrobat
on one machine could cause issues. I would have to uninstall all of them and
re-install the correct one.
For the later versions, Adobe installation now removes other versions for you.
So my 2 machines now have only Acrobat 2017, which is the version that comes
with TCS 2019. There is now no sign of DC or earlier versions on my machines.
2017 should convert PF to Word very nicely, better than earlier versions, so
should not be an issue for you. The install added an ACROBAT menu item to Word
and other Office 365 products, which work well. I have also printed to PDF from
older applications with no issues so far. None of them use or need the
distiller. As I stated, earlier, the distiller seems needed only to convert
postscript (ps) files.
I surmise that it is best to install Acrobat last so that it can set up the
other apps for you.

Question.

If Acrobat DC is installed on the computer, how do they influence each
other.

I use it to fine tune files created in Word.
To export from PDF to Word.

Is there an order of installation for these?

[Framers] FrameMaker 2019 Issues and First Look

2018-08-29 Thread Oran Petersen

-Create or Choose a settings file that is what you want
-Choose an Output Folder
-Hit the “Generate selected Output” Icon in the pod
-Hit the “View Output” Icon as desired.
