If you have FrameScript, the ArchiveFM.fso script does the trick. It collects
all files used in the doc and puts them in a ZIP file that maintains the folder
structure with only the archived contents.
You can get it free at https://framescript.com/framescript-6-script-library/
An added bonus: if you have an images folder with a bunch of unused or obsolete
images, you can easily purge them by running the archiveFM script, then
replacing the fat images folder with the archived one, confident that it
includes everything that you need and nothing else.

Caroline,

In FM12 (and probably FM2015 as well), the package function will pick up files
only in the same folder and its subfolders. Graphics in folders outside that
path are skipped and show up in the log file as "missing" -- a limitation, to
be sure.

Are there some specific options that must be set?

I have just tested this (again) with Rick Quatro's Archive Extendscript and
it seems to work well (as expected): graphics from different folders are
collected into a single "Graphics" folder. I guess the script can also be
modified to replicate the original folder structure, if needed.

archive follow-up and more

2015-06-24 Thread Ken Poshedly
First, thanks to _all_ for your great advice on the archiving / book packaging
feature in FrameMaker. I know now full-well that there's NO chance that we'll
upgrade to FM12 or FM2015. There IS the possibility of Squidds Finaliser, but
even the links to English-language screens for it come up as only in German.
For instance http://finalyser.com/help changes to TechComm | SQUIDDS and German
language stuff. Help, someone?
Second (and totally unrelated), is it possible to directly import MS Publisher
files into FrameMaker docs? Or must you first convert the PUB files into HTML
(or MS Word or something else) and then do a file import? Does anyone here have
some background in this?
Finally, it has been my long-time understanding from informal conversations
with other tech writers over the past 30 years that MS Publisher is used by
very, very few companies today, and that FM is by far King of the Hill, with
others (such as Quark Express and the ubiquitous MS Word) filling in the middle
area. Is there a pie-chart website that might help me out with this?
Thanks all . . .

Re: archive follow-up and more

2015-06-24 Thread Robert Lauriston
The least painful way to get Publisher docs into FrameMaker is
probably via Word, though it might be easier to start from scratch in
FM and cut and paste.

FrameMaker is the #1 desktop publishing program for tech docs, though
as a single-sourcing platform it's probably tied with Flare and there
are a bunch of runners-up.

InDesign is the DTP standard outside of tech docs. It nearly killed
Quark and is the standard for professional color prepress.

I doubt there are any reliable market share statistics on MS
Publisher, as most of its users got it as part of a MS Office suite.

Installing the Archive Program in FrameMaker 11 (Formerly: Bruce Foster's FrameMaker Archive Program)

2012-08-23 Thread Abungu, Salome (TTI Mpls)
I found an answer to my question so I thought I'd share.

The location for the archive script can be found at
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2011/07/create-a-book-packager-using-extendscript.html.

Install the Archive Program in FrameMaker 11

1. Download and extract the script (Under Code Snippets, click the link
script attached).

2. In FrameMaker 11, run the script.

a. Click File - Script - Run. A pop will appear.

b. Go to the folder where you saved the script. Select Archive-v2.jsx and
click OK.

View the Archive Program

Click File - Utilities. The archive program should be listed.

Is there a new version of the FrameMaker archive program available? I
remember that someone was working on it at one point. I just didn't know
if it is available. We are about to upgrade to FrameMaker 11. Any
information you can provide is helpful.

Thank you!

Installing the Archive Program in FrameMaker 11 (Formerly: Bruce Foster's FrameMaker Archive Program)

2012-08-15 Thread Abungu, Salome (TTI Mpls)
I found an answer to my question so I thought I'd share.

The location for the archive script can be found at
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2011/07/create-a-book-packager-using-extendscript.html.

Install the Archive Program in FrameMaker 11

1. Download and extract the script (Under Code Snippets, click the link
script attached).

2. In FrameMaker 11, run the script.

a. Click File -> Script -> Run. A pop will appear.

b. Go to the folder where you saved the script. Select Archive-v2.jsx and
click OK.

View the Archive Program

Click File -> Utilities. The archive program should be listed.

RE: Xref to text inset (was RE: Searching the archive)

2012-07-07 Thread Craig Ede
Richard tip is really great, but

The only advantage I see to using the original help method of having
FrameMaker insert one of its self-generated markers is that those markers
have three identifiers to make them reliably unique: A date/time generated
number, the current paratag name and the current contents of the paragraph
(with a limit on total characters, I believe).

This kind of lengthy Marker Target Id can be useful. There used to be a
problem with duplicate cross reference markers existing in files. When you
linked to either version of the duplicate maker you would get the correct
xref on linking, however when regenerating the file all references to the
two target reverted to the first xref marker target. Maddening! This is
fixed now, at least for FMs self-generated makers because if you copy and
paste a marker within a document, the duplicate marker is dropped in the
paste.

However, if you create a meaningful marker name in the Marker Text that
just happens to be a duplicate of one already existing in the document you
will find your xrefs going somewhere you didn't expect when you regenerate
or re-open you document.

For this reason I call the Marker Text for cross references their Marker
Target ID. Maybe Adobe should do the same since this is so critical to
getting the correct resolution of cross references.

As usual, the devil is in the details.

Re: Searching the archive

2012-07-06 Thread Mike Wickham
Cross-references need to be handled a little differently when used in
text insets. FrameMaker help says this:

==

Insert a cross-reference to a paragraph in a text inset

If you insert a paragraph cross-reference to a text inset, the
cross-reference marker is sometimes lost when the text inset is updated.
To prevent the marker from being lost, first insert a cross-reference to
the paragraph in the text inset's source document.

1.

Open the source of the inset by double-clicking the inset and then
clicking Open Source from the Text Inset Properties panel.

2.

Insert a cross-reference to the paragraph anywhere in the source
   document.

3.

Delete the cross-reference text. The marker remains.

4.

Save the source document, and then in the document that contains the
text inset, update the text inset by choosing Edit Update References.

5.

Insert a spot cross-reference, this time in the document that
contains the inset. The cross-reference uses the marker in the
   updated inset.

Using FM10 as part of TCS 3.5
Win 7

I'm creating very large, detailed, programmer-level documentation. It
seems best to include some material in more than one location in the
manual. Of course, I want single-source. Because of the different
heading levels at which the material will appear, it seems best to
insert these snippets as FM files within the two or three relevant
chapters. Just including the snippet files in the book doesn't work well
in this scenario, so I was thinking of using text inserts of FM files
within the chapter files.

The problem that I'm having is setting up cross-references and indexes
within these snippet inserts. I'd also like to use newlink markers in
the snippets and have gotolink markers reference the correct location
where a snippet appears. I'm using gotolink because I want the reader of
the PDF to be able to jump to the reference without having actual
cross-reference text inserted.

I know that I'm asking for a lot here. Does anyone have suggestions for
one or more of these issues?

They tell you to insert a paragraph cross-reference and then delete it? That's
a pretty convoluted way to insert a Cross-Ref marker, and it doesn't let you
create meaningful marker text. I suggest replacing steps 2 and 3 with:

2. With the cursor at the beginning of the paragraph you want to
cross-reference, go to Special > Marker.
3. In the Marker dialog, set Marker Type to Cross-Ref and Marker Text to
something meaningful that identifies this location. Click New Marker.

And replacing step 5 with:

5. In the document that contains the text inset, go to Special >
Cross-Reference.
6. In the Cross-Reference dialog, leave Document set to Current, set Source
Type to Cross-Reference Markers, and select the marker you inserted in the text
inset.

2012-07-06 Thread Mike Wickham
Richard,

I agree. That would definitely make things easier. I don't use text
insets, though, so I just copied the help on it, as is, not realizing
that it left out important, improved steps. You might want to go to the
help page
(http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS58D703E4-0A1F-4b6e-90BE-5B64A61C4563.html)

and tag your corrected sequence onto it. It would benefit many.

RE: Searching the archive

2012-07-01 Thread Jay Mahler
Thanks Alan and Mike.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the discussion that I needed. I guess I
just couldn't come up with the correct search string.

Here's my issue...

Jay

Hi, all;

I'm wondering what ever happened to Bruce Foster's Archive tool for FM
(v8). I am hunting around Carmen Publishing, Leximation,
Techknowledgecorp's Handy FrameMaker tools page, and various other
sites; and I can not seem to find it anywhere.

We just want to open a book, click a menu item, and have it package
the BOOK file and all of the FM, graphics, and text insets into a new
folder or ZIP file, for purposes of archiving and freezing revisions
(no, we don't have a CMS--got to do it all via folder/file operations).

If Bruce's Archive isn't available anymore, what other options do we
have? Seems like FrameScript could do it (of course) but I'm not sure if
that's our simplest or most cost-effective option (i.e., we don't need
to pack a U-Haul for a weekend trip, so to speak).

Hi, all;

I'm wondering what ever happened to Bruce Foster's Archive tool for FM
(v8). I am hunting around Carmen Publishing, Leximation, Techknowledgecorp's
Handy FrameMaker tools page, and various other sites; and I can not seem to
find it anywhere.

We just want to open a book, click a menu item, and have it package
the BOOK file and all of the FM, graphics, and text insets into a new folder
or ZIP file, for purposes of archiving and freezing revisions (no, we
don't have a CMS--got to do it all via folder/file operations).

If Bruce's Archive isn't available anymore, what other options do we have?
Seems like FrameScript could do it (of course) but I'm not sure if that's
our simplest or most cost-effective option (i.e., we don't need to pack a
U-Haul for a weekend trip, so to speak).

Suggestions?
David

Archive all imported files

2012-05-17 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Bruce died last year - that's why you don't see it around anymore. There's an
archive script built in FM 10, but I don't know of anything off the top of my
head that works in FM 8. Google the frameusers.com site to see discussions
about the Archive tool's fate.

It was horrendously buggy. The good news is that Rick Quatro has designed an

I believe you can purchase the script for approximately 80 dollars.

Fw: archive for Frame10?

2012-04-14 Thread Ken Poshedly
Well, my company find took the pricey plunge and purchased the upgrade version
of FM10 for my coworker and I (we both use FM8, though I use it better than he
does, if you recall my previous posts).

Anyway, I'm still timid about doing the upgrade installation until I can come
up
with a suitable replacement for the late Bruce Foster's archive.com plug-in.
(Bruce hadn't completed an FM10 version of archive before he died last June.)

I'm aware of the ExtendScript thing for archiving, but I also am aware that it
was still buggy, at least at that time it was being used by a few of you.

Also, I started to follow up on Klaus Müller's suggestion about a FrameScript
solution, but my Asian company balks at just about everything priced above
free,
so I'm forced to find something priced way less than the FrameScript solution.
(But thank you anyway, Klaus! You're a good guy for getting back to me
off-list!)

Due to how books are compliled here (with graphic images imported from
various
network drive folders -- through no fault of mine), we really NEED archive or a
suitable replacement for FM10, so we can keep FM10 books ready to open
elsewhere. (Even our network is a veritable house-of-cards.) And btw, simply
finding and putting all the miscellaneous graphics in one folder manually would
pull me off the other insane deadlines I'm trying to achieve.

So the bottom line/question is if the ExtendScript thingy has been stabilized
or
if another archive-type thing is out there.

archive for Frame10?

Please forgive me if you saw this post from me on February 3. For whatever
reason, my link to this list was lost so if anyone posted a reply, I never saw

But then again, if nobody answered my plea, I _really_ do need some advice.

I resubscribed to the list today.

Having just upgraded to FrameMaker 10, I am sad to only now have learned about
the unfortunate passing of Bruce Foster, author of the FM plugin archive.

Back in June of last year, Rick Quatro posted a notice about this and Adobe's
subsequent release of a free ExtendScript script for archiving FrameMaker 10
books. But Rick also said at that time he had not yet had a chance to test the
Adobe script.

So now I need that functionality.

1. Rick (if you're there), have you had a chance to follow up and test it?

2. If so, what do you think about it?

3. If not or if you don't like the Adobe script, what are other book archiving
options (if any)?

4. Thoughts, suggestions, etc from anyone else?

As far as I see, you have to open each single month thread to do a search.
Is there a way you can do a search on all archive contents?

many times same questions might be repeated.

Hi, Clara

In memory of Bruce, Rick Quatro has created ExtendScript and FrameScript
versions of the Archive plugin for use with FM 10.

He recently sent out a link to his blog where he offers these in exchange for a
small contribution to a cancer fighting organization, where Rick and his son
are doing a bike-a-thon to raise money for it.

Here is Rick's recent communication about this.

 Hello Framers,

In memory of Bruce Foster, I have released ExtendScript and FrameScript
scripts that duplicate the functionality of his Archive plugin for FrameMaker
 10. If you are using FrameMaker 9 or below, please continue to support
Bruce's family by purchasing Archive from his site:

 http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/

To find out how to receive the ArchiveES and ArchiveFS scripts for FrameMaker
10, and to fight cancer at the same time, please go to my blog:

 http://frameautomation.com/2011/06/15/in-memory-of-bruce-foster/

 Thank you very much.

I cannot get this link to work in IE9, either in normal or compatibility mode.
It shows the In Memory of Bruce Foster heading, but it shows no body text and
it's not clickable link. I did manage to pull up the page in Firefox, however.

Hi Karen

Your Question:
I am in the process of updating our company's template and would like to
know what the best way is to delete all the older formatting tags

Our Answer:
Yes there is SQUIDDS TOOLBOX for FrameMaker (www.toolboxforme.com)

Formats is a freeware module for user friendly processing with formats:
delete all individual formats (paragraph, char, table, xref, variables,
color, all).
or re-insert them - free!

Karen,

About searching the archives, if you click on the link at the bottom
of the page "http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info"
and on the web page that opens click on the button that is labelled
"Framers List", on that page you will see text "To see the collection
of prior postings to the list, visit the framers Archives."

Click on the link "framers Archives". This takes you to the archives,
for the past five years anyway.

About deleting unused tags, which is what I assume you mean when you
say "older formatting tags", I find Paragraph Tools et al from Silicon
Prairie to be very useful. http://www.siliconprairiesoftware.com/

Welcome! You can search the archives with Google. Simply append
site:lists.frameusers.com to your search string. For instance, you might use
a search string like this:

updating templates site:lists.frameusers.com

I am in the process of updating our company's template and would like to
know what the best way is to delete all the older formatting tags
(paragraph, char, table, xref, color, etc).

There are a number of plug-ins, like Clean Import, Paragraph Tools, Find/Change
Special, etc., and there are script-based solutions (using FrameScript).
MicroType is a good place to start learning about the many tools and resources
available for FM:

Search framers archive

2010-05-13 Thread Karen Pandula
Hi,

I am new to this list and I am wondering if there is a way to search the
archived topics for a particular subject?

I am in the process of updating our company's template and would like to know
what the best way is to delete all the older formatting tags (paragraph, char,
table, xref, color, etc).

Thanks,
Karen

Welcome! You can search the archives with Google. Simply append
"site:lists.frameusers.com" to your search string. For instance, you might use
a search string like this:

"updating templates" site:lists.frameusers.com

There are a number of plug-ins, like Clean Import, Paragraph Tools, Find/Change
Special, etc., and there are script-based solutions (using FrameScript).
MicroType is a good place to start learning about the many tools and resources
available for FM:

When we first moved from Word to Frame, I had several writers who kept
moving or renaming their inset folders. So I had lots of practice
editing MIF files to change inset paths. It was really pretty easy--much
easier and less time consuming than re-importing.

It's been a while, so I don't remember the exact syntax for the paths.
But I do remember that I found details in one of the Frame help PDF
files. (I assume it was the MIF one.)

 Linda,

I would use Bruce Foster's Archive tool for this task. It will copy
all referenced insets into a new folder and change the reference
pointers for you. It will also copy referenced graphics into a separate
folder in the same way. If its default folder structure doesn't suit,
you can simply move the folder to your preferred location, and when you
open the FM files again, tell Frame to look in the new location for all

The plug-in is only $25, and well worth it.

Linda,

I would use Bruce Foster's Archive tool for this task. It will copy
all referenced insets into a new folder and change the reference
pointers for you. It will also copy referenced graphics into a separate
folder in the same way. If its default folder structure doesn't suit,
you can simply move the folder to your preferred location, and when you
open the FM files again, tell Frame to look in the new location for all
files.

The plug-in is only $25, and well worth it.

Anyone have a working link to Bruce Foster's archive plugin?

Try:

http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster

for his plugins. You have to have cookies enabled ... else the site will
re-direct without settling properly.

Anyone have a working link to Bruce Foster's archive plugin?

I use Ultra Edit 32 for editing gigantic text files, including MIF and XML

Any recommendation on a text editor? I don't think I have anything other
than Notepad installed currently, as I don't use text editors a lot.

Can you edit mif files to change the text inset paths? Any gotchas?

When we first moved from Word to Frame, I had several writers who kept
moving or renaming their inset folders. So I had lots of practice
editing MIF files to change inset paths. It was really pretty easy--much
easier and less time consuming than re-importing.

It's been a while, so I don't remember the exact syntax for the paths.
But I do remember that I found details in one of the Frame help PDF
files. (I assume it was the MIF one.)
