Hi Anirae!

the question marks that show in the attached were originally simply extra
spaces in original post, in an attempt to align info about the numbering
properties.
I'll try again with the sample output and description after the sample format:

H:
1 Heading (increment 1st level heading, reset all lower-level numbers: figures,
tables and sub-headings)

H:-<

Figure 1-1 (show current heading #, increment

I think the easiest way for you to debug the issue is to make a grid outlining
the numbering formats: use a different column for each numbering building block
position (e.g. 1st level heading, figure, table, 2nd level heading, and so
forth); or maybe have two grids - one for the desired format and one for the
format as actually defined in the file/template.  In any planning layout like
this, you should include ALL the formats that use numbering, e.g. chapter
title, sections, headings, tables, figures, enumerated lists, even bullets,
etc. so you can verify that there are no conflicts.

I do not have Frame 10, but if
you can downsave a copy of a file (use SAVE AS and choose FM 7) I'd be
happy to take a look at it.  You can create a test file based on these formats,
and just have some very short paragraphs of the various formats to illustrate
the issues.  Send to me directly, there's no need to burden the list.

I hope this helps.

Hello Les,

I'm not sure what you mean by the question marks in your descriptions. Could
you please explain?

I'm still having issues with the added  "< >" tag not making any difference,
and with the figures interfering with the section numbering (1.1, 1.2, etc.).

Thanks,

Can you send your numbering properties for all the numbered tags? I'm
not sure without looking at them, but I have a feeling that you're
using the same counter position/building block for both the figures
and some of your section numbers.

If you look at this page, Adobe has a nice table about halfway down
the page showing how to set the building blocks up.

Hi Anirae!

If I read your message corrrectly, you want to have the figure numbers (and
possibly also table numbers) increment  from 1 within each major section of the
chapter containing them, and not interfere with or be altered by possible
multiple levels of sub-sections.  The major section does reset them to start at
one again.

For this to work, the figures, tables and headings will have to be in the same
numbered series (e.g. F: or H:) but you also need to use placeholders - the
empty building block < > (which does not alter, nor show the value) - for
counters that should not be affected.

One suggestion is to create a grid of your numbering needs, so you can more
easily see where you need to use the various types of numbering building block
- display only (e.g. ), incrementing (e.g. ) or ignoring (< > and note
the space between the less-than and greater-than symbols)

Here is how I would setup your formats, assuming only three levels of headings
(as per your example).  I've added a counter for tables as well, so there are 5
total numbering positions.

H:    1 Heading (increment 1st level heading, reset all
lower-level numbers: figures,
 tables and sub-headings)

H:-< >< >< >   Figure 1-1 (show current heading #, increment figure #,
don't change table or
  sub-headings)

H:< >< >.  1.1 Heading (display current heading #, don't change
figure or table #,
increment 1st subhead and reset lower
sub-heading)

H:-< >< >< >   Figure 1-2

H:    2 Heading

H:-< >< >< >   Figure 2-1

H:.< >< >< >   Table 2.1  (show current heading #, don't change figure
#, increment table #,
  don't change sub-headings)

H:-< >< >< >   Figure 2-2

H:< >< >.  2.1 Heading

H:-< >< >< >   Figure 2-3

H:< >< >..  2.1.1 Heading(display current heading #, don't change
figure or table,
show 1st subhead and increment lower
sub-heading)

H:-< >< >< >   Figure 2-4

and so forth.  As I'm not completely clear on how you are using either the
$VolNum or $ChapNum variables (or corresponding numbering building blocks,) I
have not shown those, and trust that this example will get you on the right
path fairly quickly.

Typicla auto numbering problem, Frame10 Unstructured

2012-12-27 Thread ani...@comcast.net
Framers,

Back on Frame after several years of being forced to use inferior products. The
hang of it is returning, but I have a strange auto numbering issue. Hope you
can help.

The figure numbering for the chapter breaks when I add auto numbered figures
and tables.

Several files in the book. Each file is actually its own manual, and I want the
book to see each as a volume (Vol 1, 2, 3, etc.). That's working OK. I want
each file to start with chapter t after the preliminary pages (Title page and
TOC). The Book is set up as follows:
1st file :
Volume: #1
Chapter: #1 (If I make this Read from File it doesn't change anything)

All other files:
Volume: Continue numbering from previous file in book.
Chapter: Read from File

Headings are H:Heading1, H:Heading2, etc.

If figure format is H:Figure\t, I get:

2 Heading
2.1 Heading
Figure 1-5
Figure 1-6
1.6 Heading
Figure 1-7
really messed up

If figure format is F:Figure\t, I get:
It does not recognize Heading 1 as but Heading numbers are not influenced
by inserting numbers, but the figures do not adopt the section number:

2.3 heading
Figure 1-3
Figure 1-4
2.3.1 Heading
Figure 1-6

If figure format is H:Figure\t<>.\t (as suggested by a post from some
sight), I get:

1 Heading
Figure 0-1
Figure 0-2
2 Heading
Figure 0-3
2.3 Heading
Figure 0-4
2.3.1 Heading
Figure 0-5

What should I do to get:

1 Heading
Figure 1-1
1.1 Heading
Figure 1-2
2 Heading
Figure 2-1
Figure 2-2
2.1 Heading
Figure 2-3
2.1.1 Heading
Figure 2-4
and so forth

Thank you!

Assuming these are the only 2 paragraph tags using autonumbering, use the

N:< =0>.\t

For the sub a, b c list:

RE: Auto-Numbering Problem

2010-12-20 Thread Les Smalley
Depending on your use of the two sequences, you don't need to have different
identifiers for the numbering series, but would have to redefine the numbering
definitions.

For example, if you only have the List styles as sub-steps under a numbered
set, then they should be in the same series and the definitions can be
simplified to:

Numbered1 < =0>.\t  with NextParagraph set to Numbered
Numbered  < =0>.\t   with NextParagraph set to Numbered
List  < >)\t with NextParagraph set to List

In this setup, the two numbered styles reset the second-level counter for the
List style (note you don't need a separate 'first' version) to zero by
including the < =0> building block, so that if a list is added after a numbered
item, it will always start with 1.

If instead you use either a numbered sequence or alphabetic sequence as a
standalone list, then you should either identify them as distinct numbering
series by adding an identifying label (any printable character followed by a
colon at the start of the numbering property), such as

Numbered1  N:.\t   with NextParagraph set to Numbered
Numbered   N:.\t    with NextParagraph set to Numbered *
List1  A:)\t   with NextParagraph set to List
List   A:)\t    with NextParagraph set to List *

or by using an empty building block as a placeholder so the counters are
distinct from one another:

Numbered1  < >.\t   with NextParagraph set to Numbered
Numbered   < >.\t    with NextParagraph set to Numbered *
List1  < >)\t   with NextParagraph set to List
List   < >)\t    with NextParagraph set to List *

* It is not necessary to set the NextParagraph property to the same style as is
being used, as that is the default behavior - to add a new paragraph with the
same tag and characteristics.

– Les Smalley

ps - Tammy, your "StepLetterContinued - L: :.\t" defintion will generate a
numeral, where I think you meant to use the building block for a
lower-case letter

Auto-Numbering Problem

They are unique Series labels that identify the paragraphs that are the part
of the same numbered flow. The "N" indicates that all the paragraph tags
titled "StepNumber" are to be part of the same flow and the "L" indicates
that all paragraph tags titled "StepLetter" are to be part of the same flow.
It keeps the related tags together and keeps the numbering correct as a
result. In FM's Online Help, serach for Series Label for the full blown
detail. I don't see any series Label in your definitions, so FM can't
properly number your steps.

Thanks for the quick reply, Amy. Here are the identifiers I am using:

Numbered1 .\twith NextParagraph set to Numbered)
Numbered.\t with NextParagraph set to Numbered)
List (a))\twith NextParagraph set to List (b,c...)
List (b,c...) )\t with NextParagraph set to List (b,c...)

What do N: and L: mean in your identifiers?

Thanks!

Ed,

First, what is the identifier that you use for the numbered steps and
the
letter steps? The two different numbering sequences should have
different
auto-identifiers. Here is the setup that I use and I can get your
desired
results just fine:

StepNumberBegin - N:.\t with NextParagraph set to
StepNumberedContinued
StepNumberContinued - N:.\t with NextParagraph set to
StepNumberContinued
StepLetterBegin - L:.\t with NextParagraph set to
StepLetterContinued
StepLetterContinued - L: :.\t with NextParagraph set to
StepLetterContinued

Hi, Frame Experts.

I am using the following auto-numbering scheme and can get the
"numbering" to pick up where it left off after using auto-numbers a),
b), c),... Here is an example of what I get:

1. First step...

2. Second step...

3. Third step...

a) First substep

b) Second substep

c) Third substep

   5. (Should be 4th step)

What can I do?

Thanks,
