Many years ago I used to do lots of contracting mainly
in Frame support and training. And a lot of the time when
I used this trick is was as you said, generally the reasons
documents wouldn't print was because the printer was a relic,
the content of the Frame doc came from some legacy program that
had weird hidden 'bits' and the graphics fell off the back of
a computer somewhere. Oh the stories I could tell...

Tina,

Bubbamisa!

Good try, but absolutely groundless. The "optimize for
portability" hack was put into the Windows driver to deal
with some applications, FrameMaker NOT being among them,
that injected their own PostScript into the driver's output
stream improperly, interfering with the current graphics
state of the PostScript job. It also makes a bit of a
difference how fonts and procedure definitions (what you
are calling "a shorthand version of PostScript" are put
into the job, but certainly not how they are used.

If in fact, use of the "optimize for portability" option
causes something to print that doesn't otherwise print
from FrameMaker, you are dealing with either (1) a very
traif EPS file (EPS file improperly constructed, not
following the rules for EPS files), (2) an otherwise terribly
misconfigured printer driver or print itself or (3) a very
crufty PostScript RIP / printer.

Can't print from Frame

2007-04-05 Thread Art Campbell
To amplify Dov's analysis... if you look at the Xerox spec pages for
the 45, they make a subtle point of saying that it uses a PostScript 3
EMULATOR. Not true Adobe PostScript.

As a result of fighting with emulators for years on a variety of H-P
and other Xerox printers, I think that it's a pretty safe bet that the
printer will get squirrely at other interesting times, especially when
printing clean but complex PS code that confuses the emulator.

Can't print from Frame

2007-04-02 Thread Bill Swallow
I recommend percussive maintenance. "PC Load Letter? WTF does that mean?" ;-)

Make sure the printer is config'd to handle the fonts and such. Might
also be good to see if the printer is using the right driver.

Can't print from Frame

2007-04-02 Thread Daniel Doornbos
When I have encountered this error, it was because of a problematical
EPS graphic in the document.
The faulty graphic overloads the printer's memory, hence the stack
error, and the printer outputs PostScript code, rather than interpreting
the code and printing the document properly.

Does this happen with all documents sent from your PC to this printer?
If so, I would verify that you have the correct printer driver on your
PC.

If the problem happens only on a specific document, try printing a few
pages at a time, until you isolate the page with the troublesome EPS
graphic. Then delete the EPS graphics on that page and try printing
again. If the page prints, the graphic or one of the graphics on that
page is the offender.

Or, if your document isn't too long or complez, you could delete all the
EPS graphics from the document. Then add them back one-by-one until you
find the graphic that causes the problem.

Agreed! The print driver has been my usual reason for such problems.

You can get updates from the Xerox web site ...
