Re: Can Word identify graphic file names?
It depends on how the graphics were inserted. When you insert graphics in Word you have the option to link them to the source file. If they are inserted and linked (or just linked), than in all versions of Word until Word 2007 you could select the graphic and press SHIFT+F9 to reveal the field code including the path. If they are inserted in the doc (and not linked), than Word saved them in the doc itself so there is no path. -- Regards, Shmuel Wolfson Technical Writer 052-763-7133 Carol J. I think there's a trick you can use if the Word doc is one of the new Office 2007 docx formats. The docx document is a collection of files all in xml. I think if you treat it as a zipped file you can get it to extract itself into all of its components in sub-folders (graphics included). Have a google around to find the trick - I ran across it on some Tech Writing blog somewhere this spring. Sorry, sorry. Here it is in plain text. Jeff suggested something that made me take a look at the html output. You get a folder with all your files if you save to html also, but the graphics are autonumbered image001.jpg, image002.jpg, etc. But, if you look in the htm file itself in Notepad, you can dig out the filenames. I made a test doc and imported an image called Yerkes_Inn_Salem_NY.jpg. The line in the html file, saved from that .doc file, is v:imagedata src=test_files/image001.jpg mce_src=test_files/image001.jpg o:title=Yerkes_Inn_Salem_NY/ I hope this helps! --Nancy ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Can Word identify graphic file names?
Thanks to the folks who suggested that I convert the Word docs to HTML to obtain the filenames for the graphics. If I remember, that was a trick useful when the original graphics are not available because saving to HTML causes Word to convert the graphics to gifs and jpgs. But in doing so, the HTML then references the converted file's filename, not the filename of the graphic actually used in the Word doc. Having gifs and jpgs of the graphics doesn't help me much because I need to be able to use the .eps and .tif files given to me on the CD. Is there something I should be doing to force Word to save the filename of the graphics? It doesn't seem to matter if I copy and paste a graphic or insert it by navigating to the file (sorta equivalent to Frame's importing by reference)--Word 2000 and Word 2003 still convert the file when saving as HTML. Carol Save the file to html and then open it in Notepad. ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Send list messages to fram...@lists.frameusers.com. If Word knew the name of the graphic at import, that is, if the image was imported from a file rather than pasted in, Word should still have the original name. Try saving the Word file to RTF, then run Mif2Go's exwmf.exe utility, which is in the free unlimited demo available at: http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm The User's Guide explains, in par. 29.6.2, Using the Mif2Go exwmf utility: Run the exwmf utility program included with Mif2Go on the Word RTF file, by typing on a command line: exwmf filename.rtf This utility extracts from Word's RTF the internal WMF image that Word made for each imported graphic, and names it according to the original graphic name but with a .wmf extension. For bitmaps, WMF includes a BMP of the image, rather than the original image format. But that is what Word keeps. Given the name, however, you may be able to locate the original. Another possibility is to show all Word field codes, and see if any INCLUDEGRAPHIC fields show up by the images. HTH! -- Jeremy H.
