If I was a noob, it might not bother me, but I've been working with computers
since 1971, and driven everything from dual Data General 7100's with 264k RAM
(yes, 264k, and about the size of a commercial
refrigerator) in parallel with a 92MB Winchester, all the way to Crays that we
shared with the NSA, to an 84-way IBM custom. In my software experience, FM9 is
fraught with the most unexpected behavior.

Hmm, I've got 2 workspaces created (home, office) that were variations of the
Authoring one that they ship. If I move stuff around on them and save them
again overtop of themselves, it sticks for me from launch to launch. Now - my
desktops aren't too complicated & I don't keep books open because they take up
too much space, so I haven't tested what Tammy was saying so others' results
may vary.

Yes, of course. I open in the same workspace each time...the one I set-up when
I loaded FM9.

It would be easier to think of the things that do stick: The only element of
the UI that sticks is the book hierarchical view frame.

And, other than Tammy's book width issue, you've saved your configuration off
into a named workspace, right? Are you finding any other things that don't
"stick" where you want them to?

I am filled with regret at having purchased TCS w/FM9. I evaluated the MadCap
tools a few times and it got down to "the devil you know."

One of the serious advantages of having a user-configurable workspace is that
consistent use enhances your workflow. I knew I would face workflow changes on
the switch to FM9 and accounted for the time required. I was unaware, though,
that the workspace in FM9 would not hold a configuration from launch to launch.
Each time I launch FM9, I must perform some workspace reconfiguration to put
the workspace back like it was the most recent time FM9 was open; the way I
like it; the way it has been incorporated into my workflow; the way it saves me
time.

Using FM9, just using FM9!, has become a task that I must take into account
when I size my work...Kelly.

Not that I've found. I don't know if it's a bug, but I'd call it a design flaw.
I wish I could reclaim that extra little bit of space. It makes the difference
between being able to display at a two-page spread at full screen height or not
for me.

Except for the book window-width glitch mentioned in this thread, FM 9 does
save the workspace. In fact, you can save multiple workspaces, each tuned to
a particular need. Have you watched the great video on the new user

Not that I've found. I don't know if it's a bug, but I'd call it a
design
flaw. I wish I could reclaim that extra little bit of space. It makes
the
difference between being able to display at a two-page spread at full

Not that I've found. I don't know if it's a bug, but I'd call it a design
flaw. I wish I could reclaim that extra little bit of space. It makes the
difference between being able to display at a two-page spread at full screen
height or not for me.

FM 9 Workspace (x-posted to Framers and Free Framers)

2010-02-04 Thread Spectrum Writing
All,

Thanks to so many of you for the emails and assistance in helping me to
understand how to get this "newfangled" FM workspace idea to actually work
for me. I am still having a few quirks - like having to periodically reset
it after I have been hammering away in FM all day, but it's getting better.
I do have one nagging question about the setup:

I currently have my Standard workspace set up as follows from left to right
- My book file, the pane for an individual FM file, by paragraph and
character catalogs opened and stacked on top of each other, my most commonly
used pods in a docked list, and my drawing bar. I have all of my files
opening as tabs across the top. The only thing I can't get to hold constant
is the width of my book file. I squish the book file to the width that I
want, expand my pane for my individual chapter files, and save the
workspace. When I open my workspace, it all opens as described above but
with one exception - the book file is opened wider than I want (it opens to
the same bigger width every time) and the pane for my chapter file is
squished down, so I have to squish the book file and open the chapter file
wider.

Is there a way to keep the book file squished down to the width that I want
when I open my workspace?

Thanks,

TVB
