When mixing fonts it is considered good form by typographers to make their
x-heights equal.
May I second Pat's suggestion of increasing/decreasing point size relative
to the host paras
font size but also suggest:

@ automatically setting x-heights of the embedded char format equal
to the host para format
@ increasing/decreasing char format size by a fixed percentage
relative to the host size

Character format enhancement, Was: Find / Replace special

2007-02-28 Thread Pat Christenson
Here's another character format enhance I'd find very useful. In
addition to As Is and setting a hard value, I'd like to be able to
set a relative value, such as a character format that applies a
specific font and makes it 1 point smaller than the paragraph font.

I remember Interleaf had this (years ago) and when mixing body and
code fonts, it was very useful.

that case, if you copy-special the XYZ char format from a Body pgf and
paste it into a Head3, the font, size, etc., would inherit from the
Head3 instead of being carried over from the source.

First, create the character style you need.

Second, set up FrameMaker's standard Find/Replace to search for the character
format to which you want to apply the tag.

Next, apply the tag to the first instance manually, then use Copy Special to
copy the character format

Finally, set Find/Replace Change field to 'By pasting' and run through all your
character instances, pasting the new character tag.

Thanks for the detail, Richard. Like you, I wish things were as we want,
not as they are. That's why I'm wondering if Mathieu's problem could be
solved a different way, namely with a user-defined variable.

For example, if XYZ were always bold-by-override, perhaps a variable
something like XYZ pasted
from the clipboard - by Replace By Pasting - could work.

Again, I'm not able to test this right now, but maybe there's a chance?

If it is successful, and variables aren't desired for the final state of
the document, they can be replaced by text, which would requite one more
test to see that this works as required.

Find / Replace special

2007-02-28 Thread mathieu jacquet
Hi all,

I imported a Word document into FM and here is my problem: I am asked by my
client to apply the Character format "XYZ" to any occurence appearing in
bold format (not a Character format).

1. With FM's standard Find/Replace, I can find a word with the bold
attribute but cannot apply any character format to it right?

2. With Frameexpert's plugin FindChangeSpecial 2.0 (which I bought thinking
it would solve my problem) I can find a word with the character format "ABC"
and change it to "XYZ" right?

So now how do I find a word having the bold attribute and change it to
Default font + "XYZ" character format?...

Any help much appreciated !!

Mathieu

Richard's point is excellent!

I believe that one way to avoid this problem is to create a named
character format for the purpose, whose properties are only those you
want to apply. In this example, you'd define the "NewBold" format by
clicking outside any text, or choosing Commands > Set Window To As Is in
the character designer, then setting only the Bold attribute. I
haven't tested this, but I think that pasting a named character format
that's copied to the clipboard applies only the properties of the named
format, not every property of the text. A quick test should clarify the
behavior.

Unfortunately, no. You can only copy to the clipboard an _instance_ of
the format, not the format as an abstraction.

FM interprets "As Is" quite literally. As soon as you instantiate the
char format by applying it to a text string, the attributes defined as
"As Is" are set to the existing values for that string. So, your Bold +
As Is char format becomes Bold + Palatino, 10 pt, Angle Regular,
Variation Regular, Color Black, etc. If you have FrameScript, you can
verify this by retrieving the property list of a string with a char
format applied.

I wish it weren't so. I'd like all the undefined char properties to
contain pointers to the corresponding pgf properties (or to be
null/empty, and interpreted as pointers to the pgf properties).

The procedure described by Art and Steve will get you most of the way
there, but be on the lookout for one problem. When you copy the char
format, FM copies not just the named char tag, but _all_ the formatting,
including the font, size, etc., that it inherited from the underlying
pgf.

For the 90+% or so of the strings that are in Body pgfs, or pgfs that
share Body's font, size, etc., this is no problem. But it won't work for
the strings that are in headings, table text (if it uses a different
font/size), etc. You'll have to manually apply the char tag to those.

I'm hoping against hope that FM8 will have a char format enhancement
I've asked for several years: Instead of (or in addition to) an As Is
setting, the Char Designer should support a From Pgf Format setting. In
that case, if you copy-special the XYZ char format from a Body pgf and
paste it into a Head3, the font, size, etc., would inherit from the
Head3 instead of being carried over from the source.

First, you should remove hidden characters from the Word file by
saving in FM as a MIF file, then reopening it, and saving it as the

bold format (not a Character format).

1. With FM's standard Find/Replace, I can find a word with the bold
attribute but cannot apply any character format to it right?

No.

Mathieu

Charles,

You may want to mention this to the independent JPG group at
www.jpg.org people... they don't think their format supports
transparency. See question 12 in the
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/jpeg-faq/

JPG2000 does, however.

Hi Mathieu,

Actually, despite what one other list member said, JPEG does support
transparency if you set it. However, I would not use JPG format in any
case. It supports a high number of colors, but it is considered a
"lossy" format, meaning it does not render solid-colored spaces
accurately; rather, it introduces subtle but noticeable variations.

If you are doing graphics with a very limited number of colors, GIF
would be OK. But, by far, my preference is for PNG (Portable Networking
Graphics) format. It supports the high number of colors like JPG, but it
is not lossy. It also supports transparency, though I believe older
browsers might not render transparency correctly with this format.

In any case, the answer to your problem is to make sure you are working
with a graphics program that supports transparency for a selected
(usually background) color.

Subject: Background with JPEG

Hi all,

when you import jpeg images (pictures of spare parts), is it possible
not to have a white or greyish square background appear ?

Do you import in another format or is there a trick to have the
background disappear ?

Thank you all,

Mathieu.
