In a Frame to pdf document, how do I put in an email address so that
clicking on it opens the viewer's email? I.e. I know that it can be
created (e.g. TdeV at bstw.com ), but how to do it in
Frame?

Thanks,

If you only need to output to PDF, I don't think you need to do anything. I ran
a quick test with FM 9/Acrobat Pro 8, and Acrobat Pro automatically recognized
the text in the FM file as an email address (although, I can't find how to
prevent it from doing this). You might want to give the address a character tag
in FM to make it look like a link.

Highlight the text in FrameMaker, and put in a hypertext marker as "message URL
mailto:TdeV at bstw.com" ... this comes out in the PDF as a clickable link
that will invoke the default e-mail client compose window to that address.

Inserting a hypertext marker, as described by Rick Quatro and Syed Zaeem
Hosain, which results in an Acrobat link, is recommended.

When you don't insert the marker, you may still see what looks like a
link, because of the Acrobat/Reader feature of detecting links in the
content (Edit>Preferences, General; in versions 8/9/X it is called "Create
Links from URLs", in version 7 "Automatically detect URLs from text").

This detection has some limitations, depending on the Acrobat/Reader
version used by your end users; it is not available with Reader versions
earlier than 7 (and may also also not be available in non-Adobe PDF viewers)

To have fully-functional e-mail links in all versions of Reader, I
recommend adding hypertext links in FrameMaker, so that "real" e-mail links
are present in the PDF (and not relying on auto-detected ones).

Hypertext command

2008-09-11 Thread Stephen O'Brien
I place the hypertext command below in a FM 8
document to open a PDF file on clicking the link.
It works unless the file name has an apostrophe
(happens often as the file names are in French), like below:

Type: Message Client

Command: message openfile \\civette/4654 Project d'IMSurvey.pdf

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

For now I remane the PDF file and replace the
apostrophe by undescore, but it's manual and not
practical. Would prefer getting the hypertext command to work...

Thanks for your ideas.

In the Hypertext dialog box, type \" (backslash followed by a straight
quote character) instead of the apostrophe.

hypertext problem

2011-06-20 Thread Jo Watkiss
I am trying to create a link to a specific page in a pdf file, but
cannot get the link to go to the correct page.

Both source and destination files are created in FrameMaker.

The destination file is a frame book file, that is distilled to a single
pdf file.

Each frame file re-starts page numbering at page 1. (1-1, 1-2, ... 2-1,
2-2, 2-3 ... 3-1, 3-2 etc). The PDF pages are simply numbered from 1
onwards.

If I set a link to go to page 27, it goes to 2-27, which is actually
page 45. This is the first chapter that has 27 pages.

I have tried using all the following syntaxes:

gotopage filename:pagenumber

openpage filename:pagenumber

openlink filename:pagenumber

I would prefer not to put the links in manually in the pdf (there are
lots of them).

Adding a linkname marker in the destination document works, but is not
feasible because it is a legacy document.

Any suggestions?

(FM9, Acrobat 9 on Win 7)

Thanks,

Jo Watkiss

Sure. I don't know if Frame's native HTML export supports them,
but Mif2Go certainly does, in HTML-based Help systems. See the
User's Guide, par. 6.8.3, "Displaying a topic in a pop-up window",
for a brief summary. You can view the User's Guide in OmniHelp
format at:
  http://www.omsys.com/dcl/ohusergd/

Par. 6.8.1, "Understanding pop-up hotspots, links, and topics",
shows a popup link. Naturally, you have to allow the popups in
your browser for them to work.

If you want a popup in non-Help HTML, you need to use JavaScript.
Mif2Go also supports inclusion of arbitrary JS wherever you want.

Formatting Hypertext Links

2006-05-17 Thread Doug
I currently am inserting hypertext links into my FM documents linking
to PDFs. The links work fine; after I PDF Document A, the link opens
the PDF Document B in Acrobat when click the link in PDF A.

What I want to know is this: I want the keyword I lighted when I
created the link to be formatted with blue color and underlining. Is
there a way to add this automatically when I create the link, or do I
need to create a format with the appropriate characteristics?

Applying a character format to the link text is essential (even when you
don't want to show the link distinctly), because it lets you limit the
link's area. Numeric underline is recommended, as it somewhat lower
compared to the regular underline, and also thinner.

FrameMaker lets you create the link, but does not let you control the
visual properties of the link (as available in Acrobat): highlight style or
border/underline associated with the link as an object.

[ With my FM-to-Acrobat TimeSavers add-on it is possible to to have an
underline that behaves and looks differently: it can be visible on-screen
but not printed, so that paper output is not cluttered. Properties that can
be controlled include underline color, thickness, baseline offset, link
highlight style.
These underlines are displayed uniformly in Acrobat, regardless of the zoom
level; FrameMaker's underlines -- whether single or thin -- are thick and
are displayed inconsistently (some may show up as thick and other as thin;
zoom in or out and what was thick may now be thin and vice versa).
Acrobat/Reader 6 or higher are needed to display the PDF.
A sample PDF is available at http://www.microtype.com/showcase/VisLinks.pdf
(60K); see http://www.microtype.com/improvePDF.html#19 for more information.
The entire active area created by cross-references and hypertext markers
can be automatically handled this way; applying a character format is still
needed to control the link area. ]

Hypertext Link Strangeness

2006-05-23 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
Hi All,

I've got one for you I am making hypertext links active in the PDF
output by using a "message URL" hypertext marker. I use a character tag
to identify the text to include in the link. This has worked fine for me
in the past in unstructured docs.

I have recently noticed that in my structured doc the link is not
working the way I expect. In some cases I get only a part of the address
in the link or no active link at all.

Could this be related to 7.2 or the fact that I am using a structured
doc? Do I need to define an element for the link?

Thanks,
Don.

My experience with converting structured docs with
hyperlinks to PDF is that the links don't work if you
insert the gotolink (or message URL marker) at the
before the first text character in a text line.
Instead, insert the marker at the end of the
highlighted text (i.e., just before the end bracket ])
delineating the end of the character tag.

The same goes for newlink markers. Namely, never
insert a newlink marker before the first text
character in text line.

I use EDD-defined structure rules to define the link
components, as follows:
=
GoToExt (a link to another FM document or URL)
The structure rule for this element consists of the
names of one or more marker-type elements:

(FmGotlink | MailLink | whatever else is needed)
Each element specified in the structure rule is
defined as being a marker of a particular type.

Element GotoExt is defined as a text-range element and
the format rule specifies colored text.

==
GoToint (a link to a newlink marker within the same
document). The structure rule for this element is:

(FmGotolink | whatever else is needed)
Each element specified in the structure rule is
defined as being a marker of a particular type.
=
Element NewLink (an element of type newlink marker,
which specifies the unique name of a hypertext node
within a FrameMaker document.

Obviously, no colored text is required in this case.

Most likely, the problematic e-mail links are not "real links" in Acrobat;
the activity you see is related to the "Automatically detect URLs from
text" preference (Acrobat and Reader *7 only*: Edit > Preferences, General).

Acrobat's interpretation of text-based web addresses is problematic when
the URL is split between lines, or when the "underlying" text is not
recognized properly. In the case of e-mail addresses, the presence of
characters such as dot, underscore or dash indeed causes a problem in the
interpretation (so a_b at company.com is interpreted as b at company.com).

Links that are intentionally defined in FrameMaker using hypertext markers
result in an active area, showing a 'w' or '+' in the hand icon when you
hover above it (depending on the web capture preference). In Acrobat/Reader
7, such links also trigger a Security Warning ("the document is trying to
connect to the site: http://. If you trust the site click 'Allow',
otherwise click 'Block'." There is an option to remember your action per
web address).

Web links that are detected automatically only show the hand icon, and do
not trigger the Security message.

It is possible that you have a "real" link, but that its area does not
match the corresponding text. Try activating the link tool in Acrobat to
make sure the link area is what you expect.

It is also possible that you have e-mail markers in FrameMaker, but that
there is a problem with the syntax of some markers, or they may have the
wrong type (when using Special > Marker, FrameMaker changes the default
marker type based on markers present in the selected text area, so it's too
easy to try and insert a hypertext marker but end up inserting an Index or
Cross-Ref).

Hypertext in Windows

2006-09-29 Thread Pierre Brandeis
Hi everybody

I usually use FM on the Mac (Classic in Tiger). I have no probl?me with
automatic hypertext links generated in TOCs, indexes or Xrefs.

When I happen to use the Windows version (on my clients systems) the
hypertext only half works : Crtl-Atl-Clic opens the target file and
highlights correctly the marker, but if the target window is already open in
the background, it does'nt make it active (the window stays behind). In
other words, the target window does not get to the foreground.

Is there any thing to dossier to correct this behaviour ?

No idea why it's happening, but here's something to try: Use the HTML
entity names -- "." "_" "‐" (minus the quotes, of
course) -- and see if any or all of those work.

Hi, Karen:

* Does the problem happen in FrameMaker, with Ctrl+Alt+Click, or only in

bug in Acrobat's parsing of the addresses.

* Is your Acrobat 7 updated fully? Have you tried with earlier releases

* Have you tried not making the addresses as hyperlinks in FrameMaker,
and turning on the Acrobat (and Reader) 7.x preference to detect links?
Any difference?

It seems that the email links are the ones that fail. Some work, some don't.

When you have a hypertext link in a CHM file that points to an external
website, the default behavior is to open that website within the CHM. If you
want the link opened in the browser, then the link needs to have
TARGET="_NEW" appended to it.

However, when you create hypertext markers in framemaker with TARGET="_NEW"

Has anyone come across the problem, and is there a solution?

I haven't tried this with any version of Webworks or CHM files, but when
I run my Frame files through Flare, changing

message URL http://www.adobe.com

to

message NewURL http://www.adobe.com

creates the following hypertext link in WebHelp:

Oh, this last bit is a dirty trick! You write

message URL http://www.checkpoint.com target="_blank

without a trailing quote and that may give you

http://www.checkpoint.com target="_blank">

in your HTML. Dirty, dirty!

Better: You modify the Webworks Style which is handling the
hyperlinks (Marker Style "GotoLinkOpen") to detect that you are
creating an 'external' link (check for "http://"; in the marker text)
and if that is the case add the target attribute.

Have you tried adding a second backslash at the problem points? I think
that's how to get a literal backslash, but I haven't tested...

Hypertext Links not Working

2009-10-05 Thread Heinlein, Roberta
I'm having a frustrating problem with hypertext links. We create
hypertext links in FM 7.2 to PDF files. Then we convert the FM document
to PDF. The links work. We place the files in Documentum where they are
moved to our intranet. The links work perfectly.

We just upgraded to FM 8.0. The links still work in the PDF file until
it is moved to our intranet-then the links no longer work. We don't want
to have to revert back to FM 7.2 but we can't figure out how to correct
this problem. I have tried turning on Create Named Destinations for All
Paragraphs but it still doesn't work.

I'm new to the list, but I have searched the archives and haven't found
any discussion related to this problem.

TIA

A little more info might help.

What is the nature of the links, e.g.,
-- simple x-ref's within the same file
-- cross-file within the same book
-- cross-file to other documents not in the book
-- links to URLs
-- mailto: links
-- other hypertext commands?

Do ALL links fail, or if only some, what's different?

Are you following the identical procedure as before when creating the
PDF files? Using Print to Adobe PDF vs. Save As PDF? All files open,
including book files of cross-ref targets outside this book? (If you
have cross-file links, the nature of the path information saved in the
PDF will be different depending on whether or not the target's book file
is open at the time.) Is your folder structure the same as before?

best,

Make sure you use FM8.0p273 or later. Cross-file links in PDFs authored in
earlier releases of FrameMaker 8.0 use Unicode-encoded file paths and file
names, which are not be supported in all environments.

Select Help > About FrameMaker to see the FM version.

To update your FM8 version, select Help > Updates.

The links that aren't working were created with the hypertext option
using the Open Document command. We enter the relative address a
separate file. The cross-reference links within the file seem to still
be working.

Hypertext Links not Working

2009-10-08 Thread Heinlein, Roberta
Yes, the links appear to be correct in Acrobat using the Link Tool. The
link shows as an absolute link and we put relative links in the FM file.
The absolute link is correct and changes when I move the file to another
folder-still correct for that folder. The links work correctly as well,
until the file is moved to our intranet. Although the folder names are
different in the intranet, the relative position is the same.

files located on clustered network (No IP or URL) with no success.

My process:

Select text in a paragraph,
Special==> Hypertext ==> message client ==> message openfile [path]
The PDF works fin, the link is clickable but Acrobat fails to open the file
and displays the path with French characters instead of \\

My system:

XP, SP2, FM 7.2, Acrobat 7.1 Professional

Did any of you try this feature before?

I don't know about the French characters, but I'm sure you need to use

Trouble with hypertext link

2011-07-18 Thread Tim Pann
Hello all,

Frame 9, Windows XP SP3

Is anyone a good resource to help me understand the rather odd manner
that Frame 9 does hypertext links?

I'm trying to put make a hypertext link from a phrase that's a subset of
an entire line, but Frame treats the entire line as hypertext. I'm
wondering if there's a "stop" marker I should be adding?

Trouble with hypertext link

2011-07-19 Thread Steve Johnson
Frame and/or Acrobat determine the beginning and end of a hyperlink by
a change in character tag, so try highlighting the hyperlink with any
character tag, regenerate the PDF, and see if that fixes it. If so
then choose which tag you want to use.

To elaborate a little on what Steve said:

You don't make a hypertext link from a phrase. You insert a hypertext marker at
a specific text location (if you have a text range selected, IIRC, the marker
is inserted at the beginning of the range). If you work with symbols turned on
(you should), you'll see the marker. FM extends the hotspot in both directions
from the marker to the next char format change or, if none, to the end of the
pgf. It's been this way since probably FM 3 or so.

In general, you probably want your readers to _recognize_ a link, right? So you
should apply a char tag that formats the text you want to use as the hotspot --
typically either blue or blue underlined.

Best practice, IMO: Select the hotspot text and apply your Link (or whatever
you call it) char tag. (The selected text remains selected.) Then go to Special
> Hypertext and create the hypertext marker.

By separating the creation of the hypertext command (the marker) from the
designation of the hotspot to which it applies, FM gives you greater control.
If later, you decide to extend (or shrink, or rephrase) the hotspot text, you
can do so without messing with the hypertext marker.

Trouble with hypertext link

2011-07-20 Thread Fred Ridder

Richard beat me to the punch with his excellent elaboration on the way
Hypertext links are designed to work. But I would like to add some further
elaboration on two fairly minor points.

First, the determination of the beginning and end of the active area for a
hyperlink (the "hot spot") is entorely done by FrameMaker. This information is
part of what is contained in the "Acrobat data" (as in the "Generate Acrobat
data" option in the FrameMaker Print dialog) that FrameMaker passes to Acrobat.

Second, it is not necessary for the character tag that is used to delimit the
hyperlink hot spot to actually change the format;.the tag itself is enough. In
other words, you can define a character tag that sets all the formatting to As
Is and it will still work for hyperlinks. But as Richard notes, it is usually
desirable to signal to the reader that hyperlinks actually exists at specified
points in the text.

a change in character tag, so try highlighting the hyperlink with any
character tag, regenerate the PDF, and see if that fixes it. If so
then choose which tag you want to use.

Hypertext links not working

2013-08-22 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com
2013-08-22-04T20:00Z

Windows 7 Enterprise Service Pack 1
4?GB RAM
64-bit operating system
FrameMaker 11.0.2.384
FrameMaker installed on workstation
Folder and all files on a server on the local area network in accordance with
corporate policy

I am unable to consistently encode hypertext links among five files in one
unstructured book.

Here's how the files are arranged:

NOTE: The .book file and all the target files are "children" of folder
\Abc_Def. File BEGIN_HERE.fm is "sibling" of folder \Abc_Def and is to contain
links to all four targets.

Folder \Abc_Def
File dir_Abc_Def.book
File targetA.fm
File targetB.fm
File targetC.fm
File targetD.fm
File BEGIN_HERE.fm

I moved File BEGIN_HERE.fm out of folder \Abc_Def because a recipient of the
informational product (portable document format files) wants it that way. I am
using a character tag to constrain both the newlinks and gotolinks to small
amounts of text. Before I moved file BEGIN_HERE.fm out of folder \Abc_Def,
crossreferences among all files worked flawlessly.

My latest attempt has been to specify named destinations (for example, newlink
dir_About.fm) and jumps to named destinations (for example, gotolink
dir_About.fm).

In the source .fm files, these jumps work only a small part of the time. In
the deliverable .pdf files, they don't work at all.

Robert -

Thanks for the info. I, too, haven't done this since years ago. So
long ago, in fact that I've tracked down my materials from Shlomo
Perets' training back in 2002.

Yes, all the files are part of dir_Abc_Def.book. The odd thing, for
myself, is that the "child" file, is outside the folder that contains
the rest of the book.

Nothing I've tried so far works, so I'm hoping that someone on the list
can help me find the "secret sauce" that I'm missing from the "recipe."

I haven't done that sort of thing in some years, but it used to be that
if you defined cross-references between .fm files in different
directories, all the files had to be open when you saved a book as PDF.

Also, the PDFs have to have the same relative directory relationship.
If you have ./foo/foo.book and ./bar/bar.book, links in foo.pdf will be
to ../bar/bar.pdf.

If BEGIN_HERE.pdf is generated from an .fm file instead of a .book, that
might be a problem.

Maybe .fm files have to be in the directory containing the .book file

Hypertext links not working

Tino ?

Thanks for your time, interest, and effort. Unfortunately, I failed to include
in my original posting that I must produce _separate_ .pdf files. So, I still
have the problem.

After I print the book to separate files, I check a link while all the files
are in [WatchedFolder] \ out. The links work great. Unfortunately, after I
move ?BEGIN_HERE.pdf? into its place and the other files into their place, the
links don?t work.

Please note that I?m posting this to the Frame-to-Acrobat list, too.

Hi Dave,

I just set up some files according to your description, with hyperlinks from
each "target"-file to the others and back to the BEGIN_HERE.fm.

Well, I could see no problems within the files or in the pdf...

(My files are mainly local, but I also copied the folder to an external drive
for the test.)

Just to make sure:

If "TargetA" is one example for a named hyperlink-destination in file
"targetA.fm" (and so on...), and "BEGIN" is the named destination in the file
"BEGIN_HERE.fm", the link options look like this:

Link from BEGIN_HERE.fm to the other files:gotolink
ABC_DEF/targetA.fm:TargetA (...and so forth for B, C, and D)

Link from targetA.fm to targetB.fm:gotolink
targetB.fm:TargetB

Link from targetA.fm back to BEGIN_HERE.fm: gotolink ..//BEGIN_HERE.fm:BEGIN

I am enclosing my PDF, if you don't mind.

Good luck...

Trouble with hypertext link

Is anyone a good resource to help me understand the rather odd manner
that Frame 9 does hypertext links?

I'm trying to put make a hypertext link from a phrase that's a subset of
an entire line, but Frame treats the entire line as hypertext. I'm
wondering if there's a "stop" marker I should be adding?

I haven't tried this with any version of Webworks or CHM files, but when
I run my Frame files through Flare, changing

message URL http://www.adobe.com

to

message NewURL http://www.adobe.com

creates the following hypertext link in WebHelp:

Oh, this last bit is a dirty trick! You write

message URL http://www.checkpoint.com target="_blank

without a trailing quote and that may give you

http://www.checkpoint.com target="_blank">

in your HTML. Dirty, dirty!

Better: You modify the Webworks Style which is handling the
hyperlinks (Marker Style "GotoLinkOpen") to detect that you are
creating an 'external' link (check for "http://"; in the marker text)
and if that is the case add the target attribute.

Manuals_v3.0\D90+94_02-Overview.fm:2 998348” becomes “openlink
D:‡ocs\Products\CARDIO‡AR-9400f\sm517-E063L-E099D_DAR-9400f Ops
Manuals_v3.0‡90+94_02-Overview.fm:2 998348” where “\D” becomes “‡” and “\M”
becomes “\sm”. If I use the “openObjectId” command, the backslashes are not
replaced but the link does not work.

Does anyone knows a good work around for this issue?

Thanks,

TIA

Re: Formatting Hypertext Links

2006-05-17 Thread Shlomo Perets

Doug,

You wrote:

These underlines are displayed uniformly in Acrobat, regardless of the zoom
level; FrameMaker's underlines -- whether single or thin -- are thick and
are displayed inconsistently (some may show up as thick and other as thin;
zoom in or out and what was thick may now be thin and vice versa).

==

Hypertext Marker: Message URL

2006-09-08 Thread Karen L. Zorn
I've been using the message URL hypertext marker in a newsletter I publish
in PDF. When readers who open the file in the browser window click a link,
the destination replaces the PDF in the browser window. Is there any code
that can be added to the "message url www.whatever.com" to cause the link to
open in another instance of the browser window?

No idea why it's happening, but here's something to try: Use the HTML
entity names -- "." "_" "‐" (minus the quotes, of
course) -- and see if any or all of those work.

Re: Hypertext link problems

Hi, Karen:

* Does the problem happen in FrameMaker, with Ctrl+Alt+Click, or only in
the PDF? If the hyperlink works correctly in FrameMaker, it's likely a
bug in Acrobat's parsing of the addresses.

* Is your Acrobat 7 updated fully? Have you tried with earlier releases
of Reader, like 6, 5, etc?

* Have you tried not making the addresses as hyperlinks in FrameMaker,
and turning on the Acrobat (and Reader) 7.x preference to detect links?
Any difference?

It seems that the email links are the ones that fail. Some work, some don't.
I went into the PDF and checked all converted links, then added the ones
that were missing. Frankly, this is a royal pain. But, if that's what it
takes!

Most likely, the problematic e-mail links are not "real links" in Acrobat;
the activity you see is related to the "Automatically detect URLs from
text" preference (Acrobat and Reader *7 only*: Edit > Preferences, General).

Acrobat's interpretation of text-based web addresses is problematic when
the URL is split between lines, or when the "underlying" text is not
recognized properly. In the case of e-mail addresses, the presence of
characters such as dot, underscore or dash indeed causes a problem in the
interpretation (so [EMAIL PROTECTED] is interpreted as [EMAIL PROTECTED]).

It is also possible that you have e-mail markers in FrameMaker, but that
there is a problem with the syntax of some markers, or they may have the
wrong type (when using Special > Marker, FrameMaker changes the default
marker type based on markers present in the selected text area, so it's too
easy to try and insert a hypertext marker but end up inserting an Index or
Cross-Ref).

Help: Hypertext command "popup menu"

2009-01-16 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Hi,

I use hypertext commands in the header area of a
FM 8 document (latest patch) to display a menu
(ex. Snacks) with two submenus (ex. Fruits and Vegetables). See example below:

Snacks
[Fruits]...Apple
 Orange
 Banana
[Vegetables]...Carrot
Potato

The commands on each submenu (a name with a link
to a URL) show when I click a submenu name, but
only the items in the first submenu, when
clicked, actually work (open the URL). So,
clicking Apple works, but not Carrot or Potato (and veggies are important!).

Any ideas? I really need a second and a third submenu!!

See, I am conceiving a header area of a FM
document (it automatically loads on starting FM)
that would provide access via menus/submenus to
all Documentation ressources (books, documents,
Excel files, Web sites, etc.). Makes it easy to
add new ressources and explain them to new tech
writers without having to browse subdirectory
structures, create Windows shortcuts, etc.

Thanks for any help!!

Hypertext Links to Excel Worksheets?

2009-01-28 Thread Ted Poulos
Does anyone know if it is possible, and, if so, the correct syntax for a
hypertext link from a FrameMaker doc to an Excel worksheet?
Message openfile successfully opens the Excel workbook, but I
want to designate a specific tab (worksheet) in the workbook as my destination.

Thanks,

Ted Poulos

Hypertext Links to Excel Worksheets?

2009-01-28 Thread David Spreadbury
Ted,
I don't know if this will help, but the Excel2007 Help provides the
following information on linking to a specific sheet within a workbook:

Note You may find it more convenient to create an external reference link
without opening the workbook on the Web. For each cell in the destination
workbook where you want the external reference link, click the cell, and
then type an equal sign (=), the URL (Uniform Resource Locator (URL): An
address that specifies a protocol (such as HTTP or FTP) and a location of an
object, document, World Wide Web page, or other destination on the Internet
or an intranet, for example: http://www.microsoft.com/.) address, and the
location in the workbook. For example:

Note that the link has a keyword 'Sheetx'. I would think that Frame could
use this syntax in openfile .

Maybe something like:

Message openfile \workbooks\myworkbook.xlsSheetx!A1

Hypertext/Linking Problems and WebWorks

2009-05-13 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, all!

I have a manual that we are trying to clean up past formatting issues.
According to what I have read (I don't know much about this function), I
can link to other documents using the Hypertext dialog box, choosing the
"Go to URL Command" and entering the actual address. This works fine in
Frame when I save as View Only and when I save as PDF. These look nicer
in my draft document too, with just the link in blue.

However, this manual actually gets published by running it through
WebWorks Publisher Pro (yes, older). All of the links I have set up the
above way don't work. All of the older format links do. Those older
links look something like this:
https://www.life.com/guidelines.pdf"; target="_blank">Guidelines
for Leaders
This confuses many of the people who are reviewing these as PDFs,
wanting to know why this "garbage" is in there, and what is really what
they'll see.

So, how do I get it to look nice on the draft side, and still work and
look right on the publish side?

Thanks for any and all advice!
Kristy

I wanted to clarify - the html text isn't showing up in the
post-WebWorks-ed files, only in the original Frame docs, and
corresponding PDFs.

I can think of two solutions:

1) Create two condition tags (e.g., Draft, Publish) and duplicate every
link, once for each style; tag with the appropriate condition and
show/hide appropriately before sending to WWPP or Distiller.

2) Publish to WWPP and then use
Acrobat File > Create PDF > From Multiple Files
or > From Web Page
depending on WWPP's output.

(Neither is very appealing in terms of workload/maintenance or
usability. Can't you just educate your reviewers??)

Hypertext markers: possible FM9 bug

2010-04-13 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello All

Using FM9.0 p250 on Windows XP Pro SP3. Structured Authoring environment, DITA
DTD.

We've come across a rather strange phenomenon when using hypertext markers.
Here's the scenario:

1. Add a topic element and several nested tasks, concepts, etc.
2. In one paragraph, add an fm-xref element. When the DITA CROSS-REFERENCE
dialog appears, click External Xref.
3. In the small dialog box, add the URL and the cross-ref text, e.g. "website",
and click OK. The xref is inserted as a xref element (not fm-xref) and a
messageURL hypertext marker is added, and the word "website" is a live link.
4. Add some more text in the same paragraph, immediately after the hypertext
marker.

Now I can use the right-arrow key to move right, but I can't move the
left-arrow key - the cursed cursor won't move to the left. Using the backspace
key is problematic too. I can click in the previous text and move right, but
not left.

I thought perhaps this was only happening on my (fairly old) machine, but my
colleague has also noticed it on a new Vista box with lots of RAM.

Can anyone confirm this?

Hypertext can't find target doc

2008-03-20 Thread Butler, Darren J CTR USAF AFMC 584 CBSS/GBHAC
FM.8.0, Windows XP

When using the Hypertext Command "Open Document" and adding the target file
name to the syntax, I get a "file does not exist error message" and the target
filename gets truncated. Is there a limit to the filename length?

Are you using forward slashes in the file path? You need to use forward
slashes instead of back slashes.

Rename Files - Was Hypertext command

2008-09-16 Thread FCI Info
The best - and cheaper - program to rename files is
Bulk Rename Utility.
As I know it's the only that has correct support to regular expressions.

Only a satisfied customer.
