Hello,
I sure could use a copy of this product called Template Mapper. At the moment I
am converting a ton of Word files into Framemaker and this would save me LOTS
of time and effort. Has the gentleman who created this shared it with anyone
yet, or has anyone been able to contact him. Thank you in advance everyone for
any help you can give me on this.

I use Template Mapper for jobs like these.

Template Mapper was developed by Chris Despopoulos
http://www.telecable.es/personales/cud.

It goes like this:

   1. Open the Word file in FrameMaker (that's right, just open, not
   import).
   2. Using Template Mapper, map the Word styles to the FrameMaker
Formats of your template. This is really nice because you cannot only map
Paragraph Formats, but also Character Formats, Table Formats,
Cross-reference Formats and Condition Tags. And you have a nice mapping
table in which you can simply select the FrameMaker Formats to which the
Word styles should be mapped, so you can't make mistakes here.
   3. Use these mapping tables in a Job Control Panel to apply this
   mapping to complete FrameMaker books.

What's also nice thing about this, is that you get clean FrameMaker
files:
the list of Paragraph Formats will only contain the paratags of your FrameMaker
template, not the Word styles (Normal, Heading 1, Heading 2, ...).

Kind regards

Re: Mapping of Word styles to Framemaker paragrahps

2007-09-20 Thread Yves Barbion

What's also nice thing about this, is that you get clean FrameMaker files:
the list of Paragraph Formats will only contain the paratags of your
FrameMaker template, not the Word styles (Normal, Heading 1, Heading 2,
...).

Kind regards

Anyone know how to get it? The cudspan website seems to have vanished

I use Template Mapper for jobs like these.

Template Mapper was developed by Chris Despopoulos
http://www.telecable.es/personales/cud.

It goes like this:

   1. Open the Word file in FrameMaker (that's right, just open, not
   import).
   2. Using Template Mapper, map the Word styles to the FrameMaker
Formats of your template. This is really nice because you cannot only
map
Paragraph Formats, but also Character Formats, Table Formats,
Cross-reference Formats and Condition Tags. And you have a nice
mapping
table in which you can simply select the FrameMaker Formats to which
the
Word styles should be mapped, so you can't make mistakes here.
   3. Use these mapping tables in a Job Control Panel to apply this
   mapping to complete FrameMaker books.

What's also nice thing about this, is that you get clean FrameMaker
files:
the list of Paragraph Formats will only contain the paratags of your
FrameMaker template, not the Word styles (Normal, Heading 1, Heading 2,
...).

Kind regards

RE: Mapping of Word styles to Framemaker paragrahps

2007-09-20 Thread Fred Ridder

[EMAIL PROTECTED] asked:
What is easietst way of mapping Word styles to Framemaker
pagraphs when importing from Word to Framemaker?

One solution is in Word to rename all Word styles to Framemaker
 paragraph names before importing.

I was wondering whether there was an easier way, maybe a utility?

In my experience importing more than 10k pages of Word content
into FrameMaker, the best way to leave behind the maximum
amount of Word-specific (or Word-peculiar) formatting is to
rename the styles used in the Word document to match the
style names already established in the FrameMaker template.
I used a couple of Word macros to do the actual renaming and
then check for paragraphs with unexpected styles so that I
could remap those non-compliant paragraphs by hand.

It's also possible to do the retagging in FrameMaker after
importing using FrameScript (Rick Quatro's script suite includes
a nice tool for this), but I have found that this tends to bring
more Word garbage (for lack of a better word) into the Frame
environment. I wanted the post-conversion files to be as clean
as possible, and this meant using Word style names that
matched the FrameMaker template so that you could leave
behind all the specific formatting details except the tag name.

But I must admit that the Word source documents were more
than 95% compliant with a well-controlled Word template, which
I would guess is a fairly exceptional case. With less compliant
source material there is certainly going to be more hand work
to clean up the mapping.

What Fred said.

Also, if you are going to Structured Frame, you can import the word
document and then use a conversion table to map the word styles to
structured Frame elements.

Rebecca Officer asked: Anyone know how to get it? The cudspan website seems to

From a message Jeremy Griffith posted to this list in June:

There are a few tools that can aid in this, including the
freeware cud MarkerWorker tool, available at:
http://www.freeframers.org/freeware/cud/
Note that the docs for it (and for the rest of cud's tools
there) are in CudSpanDocs.pdf there.
And Leximation has MarkerTool:
http://www.leximation.com/tools/info/markertools.php

Note that the plug-in that people seem to be talking about
in the current thread (TemplateMapper) is not one of the
free plug-ins available on the FreeFramers website.
That particular tool was offered in the past as a $200
commercial product, and I'm assuming that this is still
the case even if Chris's website is long gone.

Paragraph Tools

Paragraph Tools provides additional capabilities for working with paragraphs
in FrameMaker documents. As a documentation set ages, it tends to get
polluted with extra paragraph tags that are no longer used. Paragraph Tools
can help. Its capabilities include listing paragraph tag usage, removing
unused paragraph tags from Frame documents, converting paragraphs to use
different tags, and locating and removing paragraph tag overrides. It also
contains a routine that generates a report listing all the characteristics
of the paragraph tags defined in a document.

Paragraph Tools is $10 for a single-user license, $100 for a site license,
and is available for FrameMaker 6.x and 7.x on Windows and Macintosh.

What's also nice thing about this, is that you get clean
FrameMaker files: the list of Paragraph Formats will only
contain the paratags of your FrameMaker template, not
the Word styles (Normal, Heading 1, Heading 2, ...).
You typically get Word style names (and style definitions)
in converted FrameMaker document in two scenarios:

1) When you use Open on a Word document file instead
of FileImportFile, FrameMaker brings in the Word
stylesheet, or at least those styles that are flagged as
in use in the current document. If you simply rename
the styles in FrameMaker, you still have all of Word's
format definitions. You really need to use a tool like
TemplateMapper to do a proper job of converting the
formatting as well as the tag name. For this reason, I
always advise against using Open with non-native files.

2) If you use FileImportFile, you'll only get the Word
style names that are actually applied to paragraphs in
the source file. If you prep the source file by renaming
the Word styles to match your FrameMaker template,
you should not be getting Word style names in the
FrameMaker file, and if you use the Reformat Using
Current Document's Formats option in the Import Text
Flow by Copy dialog, you won;t get any of the Word
paragraph format definitions, either.

Mapping of Word styles to Framemaker paragrahps

2007-09-20 Thread Yves Barbion
Indeed, Chris seems to have disappeared. It's been a while since I've heard
him and other FrameUsers have been looking for him as well (google for
"Chris Despopoulos").

Mapping of Word styles to Framemaker paragrahps

Note that TemplateMapper was not one of the free plug-ins
from Chris Despopoulos (cudspan). He used to charge $200
for it.

You typically get Word style names (and style definitions)
in converted FrameMaker document in two scenarios:

1) When you use Open on a Word document file instead
of File>Import>File, FrameMaker brings in the Word
stylesheet, or at least those styles that are flagged as
in use in the current document. If you simply rename
the styles in FrameMaker, you still have all of Word's
format definitions. You really need to use a tool like
TemplateMapper to do a proper job of converting the
formatting as well as the tag name. For this reason, I
always advise against using Open with non-native files.

2) If you use File>Import>File, you'll only get the Word
style names that are actually applied to paragraphs in
the source file.

   3. Use these "mapping tables" in a "Job Control Panel" to apply this
   mapping to complete FrameMaker books.

What's also nice thing about this, is that you get "clean" FrameMaker
files:
the list of Paragraph Formats will only contain the paratags of your
FrameMaker template, not the Word styles (Normal, Heading 1, Heading 2,
...).

Kind regards

You're right, Scott. TemplateMapper is available directly from Chris. The price
is in the $200 range. Chris has a full-time job, so response can be a tad slow,
but TemplateMapper still works like a charm.
