figure out what it was.

Re: [Framers] Table numbering issue

2020-10-26 Thread Doug
I use the table anchor to enable me to use xrefs to link to the top of
the table. Our captions are below the tables, so if I link to the
caption, the table displays off the top of the screen. This way the
entire table displays on-screen when the user clicks the xref.

If you know another way to ensure the table displays on-screen, I'd
love to hear it.

Re: [Framers] Table numbering issue

2020-10-26 Thread Lin Sims
Two questions:

1. Why are you bothering to have numbering on the table anchor tag? Just
put it in the Table Title tag: T: Table .
2. Did you check to see if the document numbering for paragraphs in Chapter
Five is "Restart Paragraph Numbering" or "Continue Numbering from Previous
Paragraph in Book"?
The first will have the table numbering continue, and the second restarts
it from 1, which sounds like what you're looking at.

[Framers] Table numbering issue

2020-10-26 Thread Doug
My Book has 8 chapters, with tables in chapters 5, 6, and 7 (which are
separate FM documents). My numbering uses the following setup, and it
works great.

Paragraph Format Format
Table Anchor  T::
Table Caption T:Table :

However, if I add tables to any of the chapters 1-4, none of the table
numbers increment. The table in chapter 5 still stays Table 1, and
none of my test tables in chapters 1-4 increment their table numbers
to account for the tables in the previous chapters.

It's almost as if none of the first four FM documents share variable
data with the other FM documents, whereas FM documents 5-7 do share
variable data.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Hopefully there's something I'm
doing wrong that is obvious to someone...

Thanks!

Hi Tom,

You can do it manually in Acrobat Professional by using the menu under the

I recently saw a pdf document that used small Roman numerals for title page
and front matter (per Chicago Manual of Style) with rest of book in normal
numbers. When in the PDF, if you were in the front matter, the page number
in Acrobat/Reader would display the Roman numerals and Numeric when you were
in the rest of the manual, so that the page number in the Reader page
navigation toolbar always matched the actual page in the document.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how the writer did that (I don't know
if the document was created in FM). If I set front matter pages in Roman
numerals and Chapter pages in Numeric, then print the book to pdf, I only
see consecutive pages in the toolbar (e.g. ii is shown as 2 in the toolbar).

Am I trying to do something that you can't do when printing FM to PDF?

Re: [Framers] Printing FM12 to PDF -- Page numbering issue

2016-01-18 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

As a user I find it easier when a book is numbered consecutively.
That means: 1 is the title page (although the title page does not have
a page number displayed).

You can find out easily which application was used to create
the PDF. In Acrobat press CTRL + D (or in the File menu click Properties).
In the Document Properties dialog click the Description tab.
There the application is listed to create the PDF.

Best regards

Winfried

Tom,

I've used Rick's PageLabeler plug-in for a long time, and it's great. I print a
large book as both a single PDF and as individual chapters, and the plug-in
accommodates both styles when using Chapter-pageNo numbering. I'm using it on

the document was created in FM). If I set front matter pages in Roman numerals
and Chapter pages in Numeric, then print the book to pdf, I only see
consecutive pages in the toolbar (e.g. ii is shown as 2 in the toolbar).

Am I trying to do something that you can't do when printing FM to PDF?

Hi Tom,

You can do it manually in Acrobat Professional by using the menu under the Page
Thumbnails panel (on the left side of the screen). The command is called Number
Pages. When you get tired of doing it manually, take a look at my PageLabelerES
script. Here is a link to it on my web store; I will send you the documentation
offlist. Thanks.

I recently saw a pdf document that used small Roman numerals for title page and
front matter (per Chicago Manual of Style) with rest of book in normal numbers.
When in the PDF, if you were in the front matter, the page number in
Acrobat/Reader would display the Roman numerals and Numeric when you were in
the rest of the manual, so that the page number in the Reader page navigation
toolbar always matched the actual page in the document.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how the writer did that (I don't know if

Paragraph numbering issue

2007-07-10 Thread Fred Ridder
It sounds to me like you have the book file has the numbering
properties set to restart the paragraph numbering in each chapter
files. It's important to remember that numbering properties set
in the book file (by highlighting components in the book window,
then right-clicking and shoosing Numbering Properties in the
context menu) override any settings that are made in the
individual files so that you can use the same component files
in multiple books that may have different numbering setups.

And are you remembering to execute the Update Book command
to refresh all the numbering after you make any changes in the
book-level numbering properties? The numbering does not update
on the fly when you chang ethe setup; you must explicitly tell
FrameMaker to perform the update.

Thank you Fred, Ann, and Jeremy for your replies. All suggested that I review
the numbering properties at the book and document levels for consistency.

Fred, however, wins the scalp on this bug with the following suggestion:

"And are you remembering to execute the Update Book command

book-level numbering properties? The numbering does not update
on the fly when you change the setup; you must explicitly tell

Paragraph numbering issue

2007-07-09 Thread William Abernathy
All: I'm having a difficult time finessing this one, and I think I need someone
to help me come at it from a different angle. I have chapterwise paragraph
numbers that I want to reset on every chapter break, and I have a set of
requirement numbers that I want to sustain across chapter boundaries. Hence:

...
Section 5.10.6
blah blah
Requirement 47: Thou shalt Foo

Chapter 6

Section 6-1
blah-blah
Requirement 48: Thou shalt Bar

The problem is that I still end up with:

Section 6-1
blah-blah
Requirement 1: Thou shalt Bar

The current Heading p-tags are: C:<$chapnum>..< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>\t
(for Heading1, outputting "N.1 [Section Title]" and resetting all subheadings
in the C: series). At the chapter break, the Chapter title P-tag resets the
entire series with C:<$chapnum>.< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>< =0>.

The current Requirement p-tag is: R:Requirement

I have set the paragraph numbering properties to continue paragraph numbering
from chapter to chapter, under the theory that the C: series will be reset by
the chapter title regardless. Nonetheless, the R: series doggedly resets at the
chapter breaks. As things stand, I'm having to cook up a fudge p-tag setting at
the chapter breaks, which is obviously unacceptable.

What am I doing wrong?

*Where* did you set the numbering properties? The settings made
from the book file override those made from the chapter file.
Sounds like the book could be resetting the paragraph numbering.

RE: Text Flow and Figure Numbering Issue

2007-06-11 Thread Sam Beard
Harry,

Thanks for the information, but perhaps there's some confusion. I'm
not using Word for any of this. It's all staying in Frame. The
information section I'm having a problem with is from another Frame
document that someone else wrote and I need to include in my document.
Everything worked fine except for the figure numbers for two figures
that are contained in the same anchored frame. The figure captions are
included in text boxes inside the larger anchored frame and the figures
themselves are in anchored frames inside the larger anchored frame. The
figure captions have no flow indicators assigned to them, unlike all the
other figure captions in the document, which is why they're out of order
with the rest of them, I believe.

I could simply redo those figures and their captions, separating them
out from the larger anchored frame, and I may yet have to do just that.
However, I'm trying to keep the look the same as much as I can, which is
why I asked for some help in figuring out how to assign the flow and
make them join the rest of the document. However, I'm not having any
luck on getting answers. Unless it's ME that's misunderstanding YOU!

I would suggest the following.

Take the original information you have in FM.

Save the information in a Word document.

Capture the text.

Put it in the 'word' document.

Do what you need to do so that the format in your word document has is
'the same as' the FM image

Copy this information from the 'word' document

Paste it into the 'new' word document wheere you want it.

Set up your captions

Yo9u should see a 'good' segment in your document.

If the App Note is an active document, why not just import it instead
of copying it into your chapter. You'd have the option of using the
Chapter's settings, which I surmise would solve the numbering
problem... Unless, of course, the author of the App Note did something
exciting like numbering things manually.

I'm working on a chapter to a user's manual. In this chapter, I
copied and pasted in another document that serves as a technical note,
basically, when on its own. In my chapter, I'm adding it in to a
maintenance chapter. This document has one anchored frame in it that has
two graphics side by side, with figure title paragraphs below them. The
problem is that they're not in the same flow as the rest of the document
and, hence, the numbering is being thrown off. They're listed as numbers
7.8 and 7.9, with the appropriate cross-references to them in the text.
However, they SHOULD be numbered 7.13 and 7.14. I tried to connect the
text flows so the numbering would get corrected, but Frame won't let me
do that, probably because they are in text boxes inside an anchored
frame. So, how do I either connect them to the text flow of the rest of
the document or, at the least, change the numbers so they match up with
the rest of the document and don't throw off my numbering?

Thanks much in advance for the help!

Umm, that can't be right. You can't put an anchored frame inside another
anchored frame, only inside a text frame (the anchor is an object in a
text flow). Probably, the figures are in graphic frames inside the
anchored frame. Possibly, they're in anchored frames inside the text
frames containing the figure captions (bad idea).

In any case, this sounds awfully complicated. If you must have the
figures side-by-side, each with its own figure captions, use a 2-column
table. That way, your figure captions can be part of the main flow of
the doc, which should solve your numbering problem.

> The figure captions
> have no flow indicators assigned to them, unlike all the
> other figure captions in the document, which is why they're
> out of order with the rest of them, I believe.

OK, I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you referring to the _flow
property_ of the _text frames_ that contain the figure captions?
Looking back at an earlier post, I see that you seemed to want to make
those text frames part of the main text flow. You can't do that (they're
objects within the flow).

Or are you referring to the figure caption paragraphs' autonumbering
sequence (usually a letter followed by a colon)? If that's the case,
yeah, you'll have to make them part of the same numbering sequence as
the other figure captions if you want them to be part of the same
numbering stream.

Or maybe there's some third thing going on here that I'm not getting?

Text Flow and Figure Numbering Issue

2007-06-07 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

Please forgive the cross-posting, but I thought it best to post to
both lists to get the answer. I'm using Frame 7.2 on Windows XP.

Text Flow and Figure Numbering Issue

2007-06-07 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

More info: The information I'm inserting into this chapter from the
technical note was written by someone else. I'd like to try and keep the
information as visually similar as possible to avoid any confusion among
those that might see both. However, the only thing I can think of doing
to resolve this issue is to re-insert the images again, as two separate
anchored frames instead of inside a single frame. Is there another
option to keep it visually similar?

Thanks much in advance!

Chapter Numbering Issue

2007-03-29 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

I'm using Frame 7.2b144 on Windows XP.

We had some serious network issues starting sometime last Thursday or
so, continuing up until late last night/this morning. They seem to be
resolved for now, but we've had some strange issues come up since then.
For example, I have a book with several chapters in it. A couple of
these chapters were corrupted in some manner and two of them showed this
same numbering issue. I resolved it in one, but I'm not quite sure how,
so I don't know how to resolve it in the other. Instead of the chapter
and page numbering continuing as it should from chapter file to chapter
file, the book shows only one page in the chapter, even though there ARE
several more pages. For example, Chapter 8 is pages 309 to 316, Chapter
9 is 317 (with 42 pages actually in the file), and Chapter 10 is pages
318 to 337. A previous file did the same thing, but I don't remember
what I did to resolve it. I tried a number of things and finally just
stumbled upon the answer. But, nothing seems to be working this time.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated it!

I assume you've opened the chapter files in question and confirmed
they're OK and all the pages are there.

1) In the book window, select all the files after the first chapter
(i.e., chapters 2 through whatever, plus appendices, index, and anything
else that has continued page numbered).

2) Right-click the selection and click Numbering.

3) In the Numbering Properties dialog, click the Page tab.

4) On the Page tab, select Continue Numbering from Previous Page in
Book, and click Set.

5) In the book window, click the Update/Generate button and update the
book and all generated lists.
