RE: FM8 crashes

2008-09-17 Thread Hayward, Morgan (Bolton)
Hi Charlie,

We had a similar problem directly related to Microsoft Office software.
The longer we worked with FM8 in a single session, the higher the
likelihood that opening an e-mail through Outlook, opening/creating a
Word document, or opening/creating an Excel document would cause FM8 to
crash. According to Adobe technical support, FM8 creates a series of
temporary files in your Temp folder and then deletes them once you close
your session. If you don't have a lot of RAM or have a slow processor,
doing anything with Microsoft Office like what I've described will cause
it to crash because there isn't enough space in the Temp folder.

You can either make sure your Temp folder is completely empty before
every time you start FrameMaker (won't stop the crashes completely),
only use FM8 when all Microsoft Office applications are closed, or
upgrade your PC.

I recently upgraded to a dual core 3.0 GHz processor with 2.0 GB of RAM
and haven't experienced a crash since. My co-workers however are still
suffering and see maybe 14 crashes a day.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Morgan

With Outlook and FM open, FM seems to crash for no reason and I often
get very sluggish performance in Outlook. Users around me report no slow
down in their Outlook.

Has anyone else had problems running FM8 concurrently with MS Office or
other programs? Would a faster processor make a significant difference?

Thanks,

RE: FM8 crashes

2008-09-16 Thread Bernard Aschwanden (Publishing Smarter)
If you find FM crashes often feel free to email me offlist and I can send
you a little batch file I have that deletes the font cache (often found here
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fntcache.dat) and reboots. The font cache has caused FM
crashes on PDF builds time and again on my system.

I've also given this to a few clients who have reported general success.
It's not a promise that this fixes anything, and it's also no promise that
if things go wrong I'm to blame. It comes with the usual "if this works,
great, and if not then it's not my fault and you can't sue me" side of
things :)

RE: FM8 crashes

2008-09-16 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
I had to add my two-cents.
We had three systems running FM8 on XP SP2. Two had 1 GB of RAM, one had
2 GB.
We had all the updates to Frame 8. We found FM8 would crash several
times a day, and always whenever we used an MS Office app. The most
frequent culprit was trying to open a mail attachment.
Recently, one of us got a new system with a Core2Duo processor and 2 GB
or RAM. No more crashes.
We're currently lobbying for the other two systems to be upgraded.

I haven't run FM 8 (same version, standalone unstructured) very much
since I upgraded, but I will say that I have Outlook open constantly and
haven't seen any FM or Outlook issues. I'm running on Vista, Core2 Duo
2.20 GHz, 3 GB RAM.

Just a datum,
