RE: Frame Postscript Output Problem

2009-10-06 Thread Oran Petersen

One thing I did not see mentioned in this recent thread is the possiblity of
file name issues.

Over the years I have seen hundreds of frustrated users trying desperately to
created postscript or pdf and getting nothing but cryptic (or no) messages and
failure. In every case the problem was their file name. Some insist on using
special characters and writing novels in their file names, which is against
"best practices" but often works in Windows most of the time. Printers and pdf
all use Postscript code, which goes back to dos days, and which is therefore is
less tolerant of these "bad" names than Windows in general. The first thing you
should try is renaming the file to the old 8.3 standard with no special
characters. Even in this day I still see this issue a couple of times a year.

Re: Frame Postscript Output Problem

2009-10-05 Thread Scott White
Ok. I do not have any problems with Save as PDF UNTIL you enter color
output into the equation. Then all bets are off.
We do spot color and tints and this way will not work reliably, nor
has it ever. Nor will printing to .ps and distilling with acrobat.

We just except that the PDFs will have to be run through pitstop or
some other software and all is well.

The only time this ever worked for us, is when we had 7.0 running on
the mac. This is the reason I still keep my old iMac which can run
classic.

In your original post you indicated that your client could create a

successfully by using Save As. Are there any problems with that
method?

I
ask because I went through this issue when I first learned that it is
"best
practice" to set your default printer and print to Adobe PDF (which I
did
using the Sundorne utility). As with your client, printing to Adobe
PDF,

however, would produce no output. I tried all of the things that have
been
suggested to you on this forum. I've seen nothing new here that I had
not
tried. Nothing changed - I still could never get any output. I did
discover
though that using the Save As method produces PDFs quickly with no
missing
text or similar issues that used to be reported when using Save As,
so I

have been using the Save As PDF method successfully ever since.

(This is me touching wood...) I'm not sure what I'll do if Save As PDF
stops
working for me, but hopefully I never have to cross that bridge.

Does not get created.

OK, try this:

1) Select File > Print Setup.

2) In the Print Setup dialog, make sure Printer Name is set to Adobe
PDF, and click Properties.

4) On the Adobe PDF Settings tab of the Properties dialog, set
Adobe PDF
Output Folder to Prompt for Adobe PDF filename and check View

5) Select Start > Printers and Faxes. Right-click Adobe PDF and
click

Properties.

6) On the Ports tab of the Properties dialog, see which port Adobe
PDF

is assigned to.

The port seems to vary depending on Acrobat version. I recently
installed Acro 9, and now have two new ports, My Documents\*.pdf and
Desktop\*.pdf (the former is selected).

But as Jacob noted, for your client's installation, Adobe PDF should
probably be using the FILE: port. If the FILE: port has
disappeared for

some reason, click Add Port, select Local Port, and name it "FILE:"
(sans quotes). It must be all caps and have the colon.

TO continue this saga, I checked with my client this morning about the
Adobe PDF writer port. Her's is set exactly as mine is -- Port: My
documents\.pdf.
Just for grins I had her change the port to desktop\.pdf. She is going
to run a test.

I'll also try setting up a port just for file as had been suggested.

I need to check the log that gets generated with this next test as
well. And check to see if she has permissions to write to her desktop
though she is able to export data from our filemaker solution to the
desktop so I doubt that is a problem.

RE: Frame Postscript Output Problem

2009-10-01 Thread Fred Ridder

Also, make sure that there really is a FILE: (all caps, with the colon) port
set up on the system. I recall that there used to be a problem with one
generation of FrameMaker/Distiller installation where the FILE: port was being
deleted, and this broke the ability to print to file or to create PDF directly
by printing to the Adobe PDF virtual printer.

Re: Frame Postscript Output Problem

2009-10-01 Thread Alan Litchfield
In whch case there is a problem in your file you are trying to print.

Possible/probable things to look for are graphics, especially malformed eps
graphics, corrupted links and cross references, etc.

When the ps process fails it shouild be producing a log file in the same
directory as that you are atempting to save the ps file into. That will tell
you on what page the ps process is failing and may give some indication of
what it is that is causing the failure. Typically the log file stops on the
page prior to that on which the failure actually took place. So if the last
output was for page 9, then look to page 10 for the error.

There is no such thing as "PDF creator." If she has Distiller 8
installed, then the Adobe PDF printer instance uses that (with its
default job options, so you may want to make sure that's set correctly).
Don't select Print to File. Just print to the Adobe PDF printer and when
prompted, specify the PDF file name and location.

I'm asking the question to determine if both your manual distilling
process and the automatic process are broken, or if one is working.
We've already determined that your manual process is broken.

RE: Frame Postscript Output Problem

Checking the "Print to File" switch is not a good idea when you want to
create PostScript files.

Instead, try to connect the printer instance to the FILE: port, restart
Framemaker and then print again.
