Yes, I have it installed with FM 9 (TCS 2). I haven't used FM 9
extensively yet, but I've had no problem with Setprint.

I don't have this whole thread in front of me to remember what the
initial problem was, but you can probably also eliminate steps 2 and 3
by installing the free SetPrint utility
(http://sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm). It sets the
Adobe PDF virtual printer as the default for FrameMaker (without
changing it anywhere else in Windows).

RE: Can't produce PDF from FM 9 + Acr 9 on Windows 7 -- Solution Found

2010-08-23 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hi Emmy and Framers

There is a recent thread on Framers about the "Rely on system fonts" issue. It
included the following, mostly from Dov Isaacs of Adobe:

The Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance that is used to create PDF
(either by printing to it or by using the FrameMaker Save as PDF feature) has
a special option in its "driver plug-in" component labelled Rely on system
fonts only; do not use document fonts. This option is accessed as follows
from the Adobe PDF printer:

*

Adobe PDF > Properties > Advanced > Printing Defaults > Adobe PDF Settings
*

Adobe PDF > Properties > General > Printing Preferences > Adobe PDF Settings
Both of these need to be set the same way.

There was more in the thread, but I wanted to note the fact that the setting
must be turned off in two places if you want it to stick. For more information,
Google "rely on system fonts" site:lists.frameusers.com.

Thank you all for attempting to help me with my Windows 7 problem. I eventually
managed to create a pdf using the following procedure.

With the FM 9 doc open:
  1. Select File > Print. The Print Document window opens.
  2. Check Print to File box and change .prn to .ps.
  3. Change Printer to Adobe PDF and click Setup. The Print Setup window opens.
  4. Click Properties. The Adobe PDF Document Properties window opens.
  5. Uncheck "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts"
  6. Click Print. Voila, pdf.

Seems to be working now. This list is a great resource. Even if the right

Hi Emmy,

You can avoid step 5 by doing this. Make sure FrameMaker is not running.
Click the Start button and choose Devices and Printers. Right-click on the
Adobe PDF printer and choose Printing Preferences. On the Adobe PDF Settings
tab, uncheck Uncheck "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts"
and click OK. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Thank you very much.

RE: Can't produce PDF from FM 9 + Acr 9 on Windows 7

2010-08-19 Thread Emmy A.
Hi, Syed,
I would agree with you. I've been successfully saving Frame files to pdf on my
XP box for years, with bookmarks and links all working perfectly and graphics
looking good. So I was looking forward to doing the same on my Windows 7
machine. However, not only can I not use "Save as PDF" on the Windows 7
machine, I also can't print to the PDF printer. The same thing happens either
way -- Frame 9 becomes unresponsive and just hangs. But if I create a .ps file
(with Frame 9) on my XP machine and open that file on the Windows 7 machine, a
pdf is created.
Don't have Frame 7.2 installed on the Windows 7 machine, but I could try
checking to see if that still works. I miss the older interface on Frame 7.2.
The new interface on Frame 9 requires more mousing, and tagging is clunkier. If
"Save as PDF" doesn't work, it'll just be one more thing I'll miss.
Thanks for your help!
Emmy

2010-08-19 Thread Art Campbell
SaveAs PDF is an alternate route, not a shortcut It's been kind of
problematic for several releases and uses its own settings. Some
people have never had a problem with it, but I'm not one of them, and
I think most people would do well to avoid it -- numerous bugs have
been filed against it.

If a PS file is being created, that means that the PDF logical printer
is working.

So if it is working, why not just uncheck the Print To File checkbox
on the FM print dialog box and let Distiller automatically create the
PDF for you? No need for two steps. Juts make sure you have Generate
Acrobat Data checked and PrintToFile unchecked, and it should just
happen.

What I would do is take a PS from your XP machine and distill it on
Windows 7. That will tell you whether or not there is a problem with
Distiller.

Next, FM > PS on Windows 7 to see if there is a problem creating the PS.

Then take that info and also post it on the Adobe Acrobat and Frame forums.

RE: Can't produce PDF from FM 9 + Acr 9 on Windows 7

2010-08-19 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Emmy.

The "consensus" here in this list is that "Save as PDF" has problems with
proper PDF creation and printing to the PDF device is better. However, I am one
of the hold-outs against this general "consensus". From FM 6 on through FM 8, I
have found that "Save as PDF" gives me "more correct" PDF generation - I have
written about this in the past, so if you look at the archives, you will find
my comments.

With FM 9, I am not as sure yet - I have to repeat my usual PDF generation
tests again that I do with every new version of FM and have not yet done so (no
documents generated yet - haven't done much writing in the past few months).
Because my experience with every release of FM from 6.0 onwards has been that
the options you select, make FM either work or not work (with "repeatable"
crashes), and they seem to be different from each version on. Once I find the
right set of parameters, then everything is fine from that point ... till I
upgrade FM to the next version!

Regardless of my complaints about this issue, you would have to pry FM from my
cold, dead fingers before I would go use any other product (like Microsoft
Office Word ... even the Office 2010 that I now have) to get my documentation
work done! :)

Yes. No change in behavior. Frame just hangs.

2010-08-19 Thread Steve Johnson
Something else to try: Get someone to give you a .ps file from any
source application and see if you can distill it to PDF on your
system.

Re: Can't produce PDF from FM 9 + Acr 9 on Windows 7

2010-08-18 Thread Steve Johnson
Is the Adobe PDF driver your Windows default driver? Can you produce a
PDF with any other application? Is there anyone you work with or have
communicated with who can do this in the same environment?

Save As PDF and printing to .ps are legitimately different options and
you shouldn't expect them to work or not work in sync.
