Re: Page count even or no
For our main user manuals and training guides, the PDFs are set up just like a regular book, with odd/even layouts and an even number of pages. I use roman numerals for the front material. As for the odd/even layouts, our design doesn't include a scholar's margin, so it really just affects the headers/footers - and shouldn't affect on-screen viewing to much. We feel that while some users will view these books on-line, many users will print these books and design them accordingly. We also have minor documents that are typically attached to a knowledge base article. Most of these do not have a ToC and are single-file documents. For these documents I omit blank pages and there is no front material. Michael Norton | Technical Writer ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Page count even or no
It's my assumption that the purpose of a PDF is to represent a printed book, so I will typically include all the bits that make that PDF into a book if printed. There are still lots of people who print PDFs (or at least parts). If someone reading the PDF online has to jump over a blank page here or there, that seems like a minor inconvenience compared to the bad pagination when printed double sided. Whether you start with page "1" or "i" seems less important to me and I can totally see the point of forgoing the roman numbering, since that's a holdover from when the frontmatter was generated separate from the body. (I do still prefer the roman numbering, just because it "feels" better to me though.) If you're providing PDFs primarily as "online documentation," that seems like a bad idea to me. PDF is a horrible format to read online. It's certainly fine in a pinch or if that's all that is provided, but a well thought out HTML-based (searchable and fully indexed) set of online docs, is much more efficient. RE: Page count even or no
I have a few clients that say exactly what you say " since everyone reads PDFs online and hardly anyone prints a manual anymore" they want the chapters to end just when they end, regardless of page number, and then I have clients who are insistent on double-sided PDFs for proper pagination upon printing. The more complicated/technical the document, the more that I tend to be in Rick Quatro's camp (especially because of my age as well!) RE: Page count even or no
Hi Gillian, The important thing for me is that the right hand pages are numbered odd and the left hand pages even. I want it to paginate correctly in case I decide to print it out. Printing a PDF that I want to read is not unusual for an old guy like me. It doesn't bother me if there are blank pages here and there to make the pagination correct.
