[Frameworks] B W on colour stock

2011-11-28 Thread Shumona Goel
Dear Friends,

I am trying to print a 16mm black and white film onto colour stock because
there is no black and white print stock available in India, nor is there a
lab that would process it. I recently did a test that had a strong magenta
tint.

Is it even possible to get a black and white image? I am beginning to
wonder whether HD projection may just be the only route.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Warmly,
Shumona

 Subject: [Frameworks] Travelogues

 Hello you,

I am trying to pull together a list of experimental films that either fall
directly under the category of travelogue or bear witness to travel and
distance from a point of origin on the part of the filmmaker. These would
not be so much ethnographic works which are part of a sustained cultural
exchange, but films made as a result of the filmmaker passing through and
acknowledging the looming spectre/problem/pleasure of the tourist film.
Warren Sonbert, perhaps John Smith's The Hotel Diaries? I'm sure there
are others...but can you name them?

 Thanks/Grazie/Kiitos!

Hi Shumona,
I was able to do this for a film that had some black and white and some color.
The lab just has to do answer prints, filtering out the dominant
color until they get it right.
But it is possible to get it just right, if they are willing to work at it.

also of interest, women fighting in general.

The opening of Fuller's 'Naked Kiss' (woman/man, not woman/woman, but amazing
as filmmaking and gender representation)

several with women in fight competition:
The Next Karate Kid
Girl Fight
Million Dollar Baby

The whole 'babe's kick ass' subgenre of action movies (and TV). Most of these
have the women fighting men or non-human creatures, rather than other women.
(I'm sure there are scenes of woman/woman combat in the genre, though none come
immediately to mind...)
The 'Buffyverse'
The Resident Evil franchise
Dark Angel (TV)
Deathproof
Transporter II

I'm assuming when you said 'young girls' (which I would take to mean elementary
school age) you meant 'young women' (adolescents) c.f. the real-life incidents
of hazing and beatings in roughly the 13-17 age bracket. But I can't think of
any examples of either off the top of my head... (Is there a fight scene in

I beleive there's one of adolescents fighting in Thirteen

For adult women: there's a long comic tradition in classic Hollywood films of
catfights which are almost always for amusement of male onlookers; you could
track them down with IMDb's keyword feature.

A classic example: Dance GIrl Dance (d. Dorothy Arzner)

A recent interation: Bandidas with Salma Heyek and Penelope Cruz

For women fighting (often with women) there's a very substantial Asian lineage
of warrior women.

Perhaps the best example of that would be Heroic Trio (Vastly superior to
Crouching Tiger, IMHO)

There are many recent articles and even books on the Warrior Woman ripe, easily
researched with a Google search

Many women in prison films have such sequences.

Third Eye Cinema
Dec 01

Co-presented by Third Eye Cinema

Thursday, Dec 01 at 07:00PM

Robbie Land’s 16mm films provide a personal vision of the southeast United
States, re-imagining our familiar surroundings, both natural and man-made. His
unusual methods include pasting plant life and other items directly on to the
filmstrip to painstakingly create vibrant, colorful and haunting imagery.
Program includes: Precipice—An unconventional dance film that achieves a
pointillist study of motion;Old Florida Salt Marsh—Combining video footage cut,
glued and taped directly to the celluloid; Micanopy Winter Wonderland—Featuring
an antique jukebox converted into a diorama; Betty Creek—A portrait of the
plant life located in the Appalachian Mountains; Bioluminescence—Uses direct
application, time-exposure and micro-cinematography to magnify the beauty of
nighttime phenomenon.

Not sure where to start! I'm sure theres quite a few but some recent ones off
the top of my head would be:

Tokyo Gore Police
Mean Girls
D.E.B.S.
Jennifers Body
Kick Ass

All very different but depends on where you are coming from and how young you
had in mind!

It's been a long time since I've seen carrie but I can't imagine it doesn't
have some kind of fighting scene, phenomena maybe, I might be stretching things
a bit on those last two. Do the scenes in the exorcist count?

What about heathers, not seen it in a scary number of years so maybe it was
all more psychological stuff. I honestly can't remember that much about it now
beyond a few images in my head and Christian Slater pulling strange faces...

catfights which are almost always for amusement of male onlookers; you could
track them down with IMDb's keyword feature.

A classic example: Dance GIrl Dance (d. Dorothy Arzner)

A recent interation: Bandidas with Salma Heyek and Penelope Cruz

For women fighting (often with women) there's a very substantial Asian
lineage of warrior women.

Perhaps the best example of that would be Heroic Trio (Vastly superior to
Crouching Tiger, IMHO)

There are many recent articles and even books on the Warrior Woman ripe,
easily researched with a Google search

Many women in prison films have such sequences.

[Frameworks] printing colour neg onto BW stock

2011-11-28 Thread John Woods
Anyone have any tips on printing colour negative onto black and white stock? I
understand you need to print onto camera stock as the orange mask can act as a
safelight to the orthochromatic print stocks. Are there any other pitfalls to
be aware of?
