Brakhage’s sour grapes, or notes on experimental cinema in the art world

Erika Balsom Carleton University

abstract

This article examines the place of experimental cinema within the contemporary
muse- um in order to challenge the commonly held assumption that it is somehow
opposed to, or at least outside, the art world. Despite possessing a degree of
material truth, the perceived separation between experimental cinema and the
art world has led to an unfortunate lack of interrogation into the alliances
and antagonisms that exist between them, partic- ularly as they have shifted
over time. This article insists on the historicity of such relation- ships and
traces how they have changed from the 1970s to a contemporary moment that sees
experimental cinema in a closer relationship to the art world than ever before.
The integration of experimental film into the museum is a key feature of the
preoccupation with all things cinematic that has marked the art of the past two
decades, prompting new questions as to the place of experimental film amongst
the mediums of art practice. This article assesses not the distance so often
thought to exist, but rather the proximity between experimental cinema and the
art world in our moment.

[Frameworks] First person narrative

2012-02-23 Thread Gene Youngblood
Colleagues,
Can anyone think of narrative (or storytelling) films that use the
first-person, present tense (subjective) mode of address, other than in
interior monologues? It must be done through speech, so “direct cinema” (a form
of storytelling) doesn’t count. Examples, if there are any, can be from any
tradition, commercial to experimental.

[Frameworks] Other gear

2012-02-23 Thread Steven Gladstone
Sorry to bug you again, but I found a small box with Projector Belts, a
few rubber, but mostly the spring metal kind. A couple of smallish glass
transistors with 7 pins, a small package of Baia 8mm splicing tapes, and
even a few Recotron 400 needles.

Figure someone on these two lists could use this, and I'd like to see it
go to a good home. Free, please come get.

I'm in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Best.

[Frameworks] eiki xenon sound question

2012-02-23 Thread Ekrem Serdar
Hey folk,

I was haphazardly trained on an Eiki ex 6120 (being only experienced with
smaller projectors). The sound on it was recently fixed, and it's
probably the first time it's actually being used for optical in many a
moon. However, it has a number of issues, most notably a warble, and I'm
trying to narrow the exact issue. (And I can't seem to find a manual
online.)

One thing I noticed is that the optical sound roller seems to roll
outwards as the film progresses; I uploaded images with the roller in and
out right here

Out: http://imgur.com/hZPhz
In: http://imgur.com/KVMmR

I presume this is the main issue, but let me presume ignorance here and
ask you folk. Is the fact that it moves normal?

Re: [Frameworks] First person narrative

2012-02-23 Thread David Tetzlaff
I'm guessing from the OP that only Ferris Bueller counts as what Gene is asking
for, the others being examples of interior monologues. Another question, Gene,
is whether you are seeking examples of this that occur as exceptions within
more conventional narrative address, or only instances that dominate the
narrative, or only examples where the whole story is told in this form?

There would really be 4 fundamental categories of character speech here (as
well as examples that blur the distinctions). It might help, Gene, if you could
be more specific about your inquiry along these lines.

* interior diegetic:
What we hear via voiceover is what we imagine the characters are thinking, they
are talking to themselves inside the world of the story. (Example: Taxi Driver)
Again, I'm assuming that this is what you DON'T want.

* interior non-diegetic:
We only hear the characters via voice-over, but they are talking to US,
breaking the 'fourth-wall'
(Example: Sunset Boulevard, The Opposite of Sex)
If you think I'm just plucky and scrappy and all I need is love, you're in
over your heads. I don't have a heart of gold and I *don't* grow one later,
OK? But relax. There's other people a lot nicer coming up - we call them
 losers.

* exterior diegetic
We see and hear the characters speak at the camera directly, but the camera is
part of the diegesis. Examples would include 'cinema verite' documentary (which
differs from direct cinema in being interuptive rather than merely
observational), diary films (Sherman's March, Pincus). Double Indemnity. All
the 'found-footage' fictions like Blair Witch Project or where parts of the
narratives are told via 'news' footage (District 9).

* exterior non-diegetic
We see and hear the characters speak at US directly, breaking the 4th wall, and
other characters in the diegesis are not aware of these asides. (Examples:
Ferris Bueller, the TV show 'Moonlighting'.)

An example that blurs the last two somewhat is the TV show 'Once and Again'
Wikipedia: One of the show's unique aspects was the interview sequences
filmed in black and white and interspersed throughout each episode, where the
characters would reveal their innermost thoughts and memories to the
camera.(http://tinyurl.com/6pbmfve)
These 'interviews' had no specified provenance within the diegesis. (There was
no frame that a doc was being made about these people.) It was more like an
omniscient narrator had the power to isolate them from their location in
narrative time and space and solicit their thoughts. But the characters did not
address their comments to an external AUDIENCE or acknowledge their part in a
story. They spoke as if they were addressing some sort of sympathetic other who
might exist in the world of the story, though not involved in the events of the
story.

Re: [Frameworks] eiki xenon sound question

2012-02-23 Thread 40 Frames
Your warble or wow and flutter is usually the result of too much slack
around the sound drum, which is
usually the result of an issue before or after the drum.

If your sound drum is moving outward during projection, I'd say that's the
culprit.

Robert Film Services. I believe they did the 35mm loopers for a Rodney

Re: [Frameworks] eiki xenon sound question

2012-02-23 Thread Todd Eacrett

The sound drum should not move laterally at all. If it's moving in and out that
much it's probably not a bent spindle or worn bushings. More likely when it was
fixed someone left out a spacer or the compression spring that keeps it all
tight (curved spring steel piece between the flywheel and bolt on the other end
of the sound drum spindle -- or maybe they put it on backwards?).

You might be able to find a manual at film-tech.com.

I'm just working from memory, but can take a look tomorrow and confirm how the
sound drum assembly should go together.
