Thanks for the tips, Mark.

I just spoke with a Kodak rep, who told me they are taking orders for 7363
ONLY until the end of this month (which is the end of this week!)

American markets. I am not surprised. I predicted as such.

Beta program is completely sold out!
Posted on August 23, 2014 by admin

We have just sold out our entire beta program.

Everyone who has come forward and got a spot in the program will
receive their purchase contract by Monday the 25th of August.

We are extremely excited with the prospect of delivering all these
 cameras as soon as possible!

Thanks for your early support, we wouldn’t have been able to pull this
 off without you.

 Best regards

 Hi all,

I spoke to the L.A. Kodak rep yesterday, and 7363 16mm hicon is on back
order, but the current plan is for Kodak to most likely fill any order as
long as it comes in basically NOW.

So if you want any of this stuff, call 1-800-621-FILM and place an order
while you can. You will likely be told it's on back order, but you should
be able to place an order anyway. It's not a 100% guarantee at this point
that you'll get the stock, but it's very likely.

The same should be the case for 5363 35mm hicon, which I believe is also
 being discontinued.

 All the best,

 Mark Toscano

[Frameworks] Cameraless Filmmaking emulation in photoshop

2014-08-27 Thread Warren Cockerham
Frameworks:

A few years ago, photoshop offered a filmstrip function in its video
tools. You used to be able to emulate cameraless filmmaking techniques in
this mode. I believe Gregg Biermann used this technique in some of his
work. You can still work with video frame-by-frame in photoshop. But, it
looks like the filmstrip function has disappeared in the last few PS
versions. Does anyone know where one might work this way digitally? Does
GIMP offer up this functionality?

Re: [Frameworks] Cameraless Filmmaking emulation in photoshop

2014-08-27 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi Rajesh,

I know PS still ingests video and you're still able to work frame-by-frame.
Many folks still use PS for rotoscoping and video cutouts because the
aesthetic looks handmade - like Kelly Sears' Voice on the Line
http://vimeo.com/8700224. But in CS3, there was a filmstrip function that
allowed you to work on a strip of video as if it were a strip of film and
the product would kinda resemble a cameraless film without discreet frames
like... Len Lye's Color Box https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PgNr0IZRDE ,
Ben Russell's Trypps 1 http://vimeo.com/7480364 , Jodie Mack.s A Joy,
http://vimeo.com/8375376Brakhage's Night Music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk8Bs2w5pUI, etc. I'm trying to show
examples of digital simulacra of the real/organic thing... or a different,
digital, material-alienated thing

But thanks for the suggestion; that dude's pretty excited about some
smart-object video packaging. And yes, those filter packages in PS are
examples of digital simulacra that are both material and labor alienating
for sure. But, I'm looking specifically for this cameraless, frameless,
digital example.

thanks again,
Warren

I have heard this complaint for decades from filmmakers who have their
originals stored in Du Art. This includes Sandy Daley who could not
retrieve her original 16mm negs of Robert Having His Nipple Pierced. In the
late 80's Du Art (the supposed Rolls Royce of Labs) wanted to charge her a
fortune to retrieve her negatives. I do not know whatever the outcome was.
This is part of Du Art's legacy I do not think that history will miss this
 place.

Holding original experimental films for ransom is unforgivable no matter
who the filmmaker is. The $200k should have been used to investigate those
negatives that belong to the cinema art world.

Yeah, it was about the time Brazil was released and I did not even liked
that movie...
Forget to say the son of one of the (bankrupt) partners was the only person
present in the whole facility as it was vacated, he was a die hard Punk who
wore the standard issue punk look (very dated by 1988) even wearing shades
indoors... The guy looked like one of those Blade Runner extras, very tall
and pale.
At least he was a nice person, but must people who showed up to pick up
material freaked out when they saw him.
