Re: [Frameworks] shooting a projection with 16mm film

2019-06-28 Thread Christopher Ball
I would shoot a test at 24fps, 16fps and maybe some longer exposures if you
have the options on your camera, and the longest shutter speed available.
You only need to shoot a few seconds of each option. You could also shoot
a few feet, then break off the film and shoot a few feet again and push
process the 2nd section. I wouldn't push more than 1 stop.

One very quick way to estimate if you have anywhere close to enough light
is to shoot some stills, even on a digital camera, using 1/48th of a second
exposure time and 500 ASA setting. That will give you an approximation of
shooting at a 180 degree shutter at 24fps. If there is a good exposure on
the digital still, then likely you will be fine for film. If the digital
still is quite dark (or non readable) that will tell you that you probably
dont have enough light. You could even estimate a 1 stop push by shooting
a second still at 1000 ASA.

I don't always read my Hyperallergic emails when they arrive but in sifting
though a batch last night I found mention of this Suzan Pitt obituary in
Animation Magazine. It contains some career details I'd not known and also
has a link to a recent 25 minute interview on Vimeo that was done as part
of a Great Woman Animators project.

Re: [Frameworks] shooting a projection with 16mm film

2019-06-28 Thread Nicole Baker
Hi Christopher,
Thanks so much for responding. Your comments on exposure in other low
light situations have really helped put some perspective on shooting this
projection. My fastest lens is a 1 inch that opens to 1.4, and I am using
a 500T stock. I think the best thing to do is as you say, shoot a test.
The people who run the planetarium have been really welcoming, so going for
a test and then returning will work out.
Thanks again!

Hello,

Neus Miró curated an exhibition around this topic in 2013 at the Fundació
Joan Miró of Barcelona.
In fact *Insomnia *was the title she used. Hollis Frampton, Lis Rhodes and
Ben Rivers were some of the filmmakers included.

Here's the link of the catalogue:

 Dear Frameworkers,

I am currently working on the theme of insomnia/chronic sleeplessness
for a thesis, as well as for a forthcoming video and performance work. I
would be curious and grateful to know if you can recall
films/videos/contemporary art where there's something related to insomnia
as a mental or cultural state (a scene, a spark triggering a plot, as a
 topic, etc.).

 Here is my current list:

Ingmar Bergman, *Hour of the Wolf*
 Danillo Correale,

*No More Sleep No MoreSofia Coppola, Lost in TranslationSean Ellis,

 Jim Jarmusch,
 *Only Lovers Left Alive*Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle
