[Frameworks] collective remembrance/memorials as film?

2019-03-05 Thread Anderwald + Grond
Dear frameworkers,
We are in search of experimental films and video artworks that can be
understood as memorial or engage in remembering collective events or
catastrophes.
From Alain Resnais' Nuit et Brouillard to Colectivo Los Ingrávidos’ works, e.g.
Memorial, we are interested in moving image artwork that is invested in
collective, public remembering of historic events and would be very glad about
suggestions.
Thank you,
Ruth

16mm colour anamorphic film with optical sound, 63 minutes

Also, did not John Whitney make a Super8 film on a lunar eclipse?

[Frameworks] FINAL CALL Art Competition/Survey @Kunsthaus Graz, Austria

2016-01-10 Thread Anderwald Grond

LIVING IN A DIZZYING WORLD
Art Competition and Survey

FINAL CALL!
Registration until 14th January 2016

What is this about?
In an increasingly destabilised world, every individual has to deal with
overwhelming and dizzying situations on a daily basis, be it on a personal
level or on a political scale.
Dizziness arises locally, and situationally, and combines various elements. It
can clear a way ahead, stir things up, move heaven and earth - dizziness is a
destabiliser. Artists working with moving image art (film, video, gif, etc) or
with time based media art are invited to create a work. The aim of the
competition is to increase artistic awareness for the condition of the world we
live in and to propose artistic concepts and ideas on how to cope with the
challenges to come.

Who?
Artists and students working with moving image art or time based media art who
are willing to take part in both the art competition and the accompanying
survey are invited to participate.

Register at d...@uni-graz.at until 14th January 2016.

Art competition and survey from 18th January until 1st February 2016
Artists are asked to create a piece of time-based art from 2 to 10 minutes on
the topic Living in a Dizzying World. After two weeks, participants must upload
their artwork to a provided server. In addition, an online survey giving some
general personal information has to be completed and while working on the
artwork, artists answer questions on their artistic process. The aim of the
survey is not to strip the artistic process of its mysteries or its
individuality. Rather, it seeks to help artists to gain a better understanding
of the process they undergo, the needs and conditions that come with it, and
what kind of support is relevant and helpful.

Prizes
The Main Award is inclusion of the artwork in an international group exhibition
based on the theme Dizziness–A Resource, in 2017 at Kunsthaus Graz. The 2nd to
4th prizes will see the works presented at an artist’s lecture at Kunsthaus
Graz, autumn 2016. A website will promote the best ten works.

Jury
Katrin Bucher Trantow, chief curator at Kunsthaus Graz
, Austria
Sergio Edelsztein, director of CCA–Tel Aviv , Israel
Anna Jermolaewa , artist, Austria

 Dear Frameworkers,

A small group of students and alumni are programing an American Indian and
Indigenous film screening series at CalArts for the end of the month. This
will be a week long event from March 30th to April 3rd.

I'm reaching out to all of you for suggestions as we finalize our programming
 in the next coming weeks.

The program covers a range of forms and techniques and any suggestions will
be appreciated and looked at. We are specifically looking for work made by
American Indian and Indigenous peoples, not simply about.

Programs will be arranged around such topics as:
The Construction of Knowledge in Ethnographic Film Practices
The Preservation and Conservation of Indigenous Land and Rights Contemporary
 Indigenous Art and Crafts
Personal Narratives and Histories on the Reservation.

As the event draws closer I'll send out the program details for those
interested in the Southern California and Los Angeles area.

Thank you for any help and suggestions.

[Frameworks] HASENHERZ N°12 Helga Fanderl

2013-09-20 Thread Anderwald Grond
After summer break HASENHERZ brings you the fantastic films by Helga Fanderl.

Don't miss it. Helga Fanderl will be here, too.

http://www.hasenherz.at

Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten, Graz
Mariahilferplatz 3, 8020 Graz, Austria
Saturday, September 28, 2013 11 a.m.

German-born and Paris-based filmmaker Helga Fanderl has been making Super-8
films since the mid 1980s. The films show what’s happening in front of the
camera as well as the simultaneous logical process of its transformation by
using the chronology of the event as cinematographic writing. With the Super-8
camera I can react very quickly: the eye against the viewfinder, the camera
close to the body, perceiving and filming simultaneously. Since 1990 her work
is represented in film museums, museums of modern and contemporary art,
exhibition spaces, galleries, art house cinemas, and other locations: Deutsches
Filmmuseum, Frankfurt; Arsenal, Berlin; Portikus, Frankfurt, Museum für
Zeitgenössische Kunst, Basel; Anthology Film Archives, New York; Centre
genevois de gravure contemporaine, Geneva; Musée d’Art moderne, Strasbourg;
Kunsthalle Bielefeld; Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt; Centre Wallonie de
Bruxelles, Paris; The New York Public Library, Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris;
Babylon Mitte, Berlin; Cineteca di Bologna and more.

Since January 2012 the artists Ruth Anderwald + Leonhard Grond have been
curating a monthly screening and discussion series. This series is inspired by
Arnold Schönberg, who created the Society for Private Musical Performances in
1918 in Mödling, Austria. At their meetings, works would be performed,
discussed, and then performed again, with the intention of making performances
of newly-composed music more comprehensible. Ruth Anderwald + Leonhard Grond
use this very method to encourage a more complete understanding of experimental
films and videos. If the artists whose work is being shown, are not present,
they can be cut into the discussion via skype. http://www.hasenherz.at

»Dear Ruth and Leo, This is to let you know that I found my HASENHERZ
experience to be most productive and stimulating. The idea of viewing,
dicussing then re-viewing a filmmaker's film is excellent and that I know of,
not done anywhere else. Good luck! I hope the series continues for a long time.
Best,
Vivian Ostrovsky«

This time HASENHERZ travels to Australia to bring you animation films of Wendy Vaintiy.Come and see for yourself!http://www.hasenherz.atKulturzentrum bei den Minoriten, GrazMariahilferplatz 3,8020 Graz, AustriaSaturday, May 25, 2013 11 a.m.in conversation with artist Fiona Rukschcio.48 year old Adelaide, Australia based Wendy Vainity is the newest discovery in the 3D animation circuit. Wendy is a "cat lover/try hard gardener/port Adelaide power supporter/freeware addict." Her collection of homemade 3D animations ranges from the surreal to the creepy to the outright bizarre. Her animations raise questions about the distinction between outsider art and just plain art.But there's a clear sense of humor in the videos and a sarcastic edge to her internet presence. These clips are not, as they might have seem to be, intentionally wierd internet art. In 2012 artists Ruth Anderwald + Leonhard Grond start their series HASENHERZ.Imagine the format the following way: International artists are being shown. Duration: Approximately one hour. In the style of Schönberg's Association for private musical performance (founded in 1918) the concept of wanting to understand the new, is now transferred to the medium of experimental film and lyricism:The movies on display are being repeated and in between screenings they are discussed. The same form of presentation applies to readings. As it was the goal of the format`s model “to provide artists and art lovers with a real and profound knowledge of modern music“, similiar should be achieved for the experimental film/video and lyricism. If the artists whose work is being shown, are not present, they can be cut into the discussion via skype or telephone.»Dear Ruth and Leo, This is to let you know that I found myHASENHERZexperience to be most productive and stimulating. I think Bruce McClure's live 16mm performances have been some of the more
disorienting cinematic experiences I have had. It could also said that the
texts that he often hands out at his screenings could also have a dizzying
 mental effect on the reader.

 Hello Frameworks!

I may have the opportunity to teach a short workshop on the Film Journal
genre at the University of Minnesota this spring... which means I need to
 learn more about it first.

I would love some suggestions about major practitioners of this form
throughout film history, especially those whose work is purchaseable /
 accessible in a non-print-rental form.

I'm also interested in critical writing on the subject.

Besides Jonas Mekas, whose work should I be exploring?

 Thanks very much!
