There's also Teching (Sam) Hseih's* One Year Performance 1980-1981 (Time
Clock Piece) *which I believe exists somewhere in 16mm format. Sam punched
a time clock on the hour every hour for one year in his studio. He shot one
frame of 16mm film for each time clock punch. He shaved his head at the
beginning of this performance - the time lapse/animated hair growth serving
as a record of the performance. I believe he was institutionalized briefly
right after this performance - he didn't sleep for more than an hour at a
time for one year... punching a clock several times a day is maddening
enough. A link explaining the work: http://vimeo.com/16280427

There's Jodie Mack's* Dusty Stacks of Mom* that is currently playing all
over the world. Search the title and you'll find tons of info on it and
it's relationship to work, labor, capitalism, MOM & pop business, etc.

I also made a video a few years ago called *Between the Sheets* that I can
send anyone on the list a password protected link to. Description: A hidden
cellphone camera documents the trek of a box of sheets as it travels
through a Wal-mart Distribution Center. Part roller coaster ride, part
Marxist critique, this cat and mouse game was shot on the final day of ten
years of service by associate 2569.

It's only password protected because my sister still works there and is
supporting two kids with the job. I really can't jeopardize her job (no
matter how shitty the conditions are and how politically unjust the entire
corporation is) with my silly little video that could be easily found with
a simple internet search. But art folks, you might be interested.

Getting work:

nestled deep in Ken Jacob's STAR SPANGLED TO DEATH
is another film by James Otis - ON YOUR OWN (1981)
a cut-up found film shot in an employment agency (circa the 1960s?)
with editing structured around the repeated words "job" "jobs"

Getting to work:

Mark Ostrowski's LA LINEA (2012)

as well as
William Carlos Williams's poem

Hello Insa.

The Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles did a project in 2010 entitled WORK.
There were 23 short films that examined various aspects of work (immigration,
globalization, bad jobs, good jobs, capitalism, neighborhood stories, etc...)

It is powerful piece. We would be happy to mail you a DVD.

Be well,

I would like to build a list of video art and films

“Modern Times”-style factory scenes in narrative films are endless and not
relevant to this query, but I’ll take the opportunity to remember the marvelous
sausage factory scene with Bulle Ogier in Alain Tanner’s “La Salamandre”
(1971). An entirely different spin, again not relevant here, is the factory
sequence at the beginning of “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning” (1960), with
Albert Finney and the rat.

One of the best variations on workers leaving the factory, Standish Lawder’s
“Necrology.” To object that these people aren’t necessarily leaving work is to
ignore the fact that we all work in the social factory every day. In that
sense, we never leave work.
