Re: [Frameworks] Original soundtrack recordings of Avant-Garde films

2019-12-10 Thread Eric Theise
Regrettably I don't know the films of Johan van der Keuken – "an
independent, leftwing filmmaker who is too experimental and formalist for
many political people and too politically pointed for many followers of the
avant-garde" it says here at
https://www.ejumpcut.org/archive/onlinessays/JC34folder/Vanderkeuken.html –
but I do know that Willem Breuker composed a number of soundtracks for him.
They are sprinkled across his and the Kollektief's discography but this
release is only film music:

This page might also be a fruitful resource:

Re: [Frameworks] Original soundtrack recordings of Avant-Garde films

2019-12-09 Thread Rodrigo Faustini
I believe these weren't mentioned yet:

1. Gil Wolman - L'anticoncept
https://www.discogs.com/Gil-J-Wolman-LAnticoncept/release/746950 (Not a
full/original soundtrack but edited excerpts I believe)

2. Thomas Köner + Jürgen Reble - soundtrack for the performance Tabula
Smaragdina
https://www.discogs.com/Thomas-K%C3%B6ner-Kaamos/release/103733 (Reble
contributed for the cover also)
Plus other collaborations with Reble and Yann Beauvais: Zyklop
https://www.discogs.com/Thomas-K%C3%B6ner-Zyklop/release/122875

3. Metamkine has this interesting avant garde cinema-related series
entitled Cinema Par L'Oreille (with Ruttman's Weekend and Jérome
Noetinger's own music, with Metamkine providing the covers)

Re: [Frameworks] Original soundtrack recordings of Avant-Garde films

2019-12-07 Thread Salah Hassanpour
Apologies if it’s been mentioned before (I took a quick glance at the reply thread) but Bobby Beausoleil made music for Kenneth Anger’s Lucifer Rising (1972). It’s quite compelling despite the musician’s, er, biography. Also, along the same “deep ambient” spectrum of music, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma used to work with late Paul Clipson and if I recall one of his more recent albums is a tribute to the latter. I would recommend using Discogs as a good database. Look at the labels associated with the soundtracks and try to see which version is available. Often, you might find unreleased cues/songs if you search for the most recent reissue. Salah HassanpourFrom: mrktoscSent: December 7, 2019 17:09To: Experimental Film Discussion ListSubject: Re: [Frameworks] Original soundtrack recordings of Avant-Garde films Gunvor Nelson made the My Name is Oona soundtrack herself with some input from Patrick Gleeson.  Steve Reich was not involved, but his work had inspired the piece and he was a friend of Gunvor’s at the time.   I think a lot of this common misconception comes from the film’s end credit, “Tack Patrick Gleeson / Steve Reich”, but “tack” is “thanks” in Swedish. And I don’t believe it’s been released anywhere. Mark On Dec 7, 2019, at 1:28 PM, Christine Downing <downing.christ...@gmail.com> wrote:Greetings,I don't know if this is on vinyl or CD, but Gunvor Nelson's film, "My Name is Oona," has a sound track by Steve Reich.Best regards,Chris Downing On Sat, Dec 7, 2019 at 3:51 PM Albert Alcoz <albertal...@gmail.com> wrote:Thank you very much for all these valuable answers. It seems that the subject is very extensive. A list of splendid sound recordings has come out! All the best,Albert On Fri, Dec 6, 2019 at 4:51 PM Petri Kuljuntausta <petri...@gmail.com> wrote:Erkki Kurenniemi's music Hyppy (Jump) for the film Hyppy (Jump, 1965),directed by Eino Ruutsalo.Pan Sonic has composed several film soundtracks and these has been released.Petri Kuljuntausta's music Stagecoach for the film Stagecoach (2010)9', directed by Sami van Ingen.Petri Kuljuntausta's music Navigator for the film Tomato One (2006)6', directed by Sami van Ingen.Petri Kuljuntausta's music Five Fragments of the Extinct Empathy forthe film Five Fragments of the Extinct Empathy (2011) 7' (experimentaldocumentary), directed by Anna Nykyri. On Thu, Dec 5, 2019 at 6:25 PM Carlos Kase <carlosk...@gmail.com> wrote:>> The soundtrack for Christian Marclay’s GUITAR DRAG (2000) was issued as a single-sided LP in 2006.>> https://www.discogs.com/Christian-Marclay-Guitar-Drag/release/684902>>> On Dec 5, 2019, at 7:03 AM, kris <krislimb...@posteo.de> wrote:>> we released on our experimental music label emitter micro two> soundtracks for movies by film maker John Bock:>> https://emittermicro.com/em-011-1/> https://emittermicro.com/em-011-2/>> what comes to my mind is that ECM released a godard "sound track" to the> movie Nouvelle Vague with the complete film sound (everything but the> image)> https://www.ecmrecords.com/catalogue/143038752245/nouvelle-vague-complete-soundtrack-jean-luc-godard>> best kris>>> On 12/4/19 11:42 PM, Rob Gawthrop wrote:>> Many of the sound from Jeff Keen’s films re on  JEFF KEEN: NOISE ART on> Trunk Records (CD).>> It would be good if Steve Reich’s track for Robert Nelson's  Oh Dem> Watermelons and Brian Eno’s for  Malcolm LeGrice’s Berlin Horse was were> available.>> I’d be interested to hear of suggestions for others that would stand on> the’re own as CD or Vinyl recordings>> Robwe released on our experimental music label emitter micro two soundtracks for movies by film maker Jowe released on our experimental music label emitter micro two soundtracks for movies by film maker John Bock:>>> https://emittermicro.com/em-011-1/> https://emittermicro.com/em-011-2/>> what comes to my mind is that ECM released a godard "sound track" to the> movie Nouvelle Vague with the complete film sound (everything but the> image)> https://www.ecmrecords.com/catalogue/143038752245/nouvelle-vague-complete-soundtrack-jean-luc-godard>> best kris> hn Bock:>> https://emittermicro.com/em-011-1/> https://emittermicro.com/em-011-2/>> what comes to my mind is that ECM released a godard "sound track" to the> movie Nouvelle Vague with the complete film sound (everything but the> image)> https://www.ecmrecords.com/catalogue/143038752245/nouvelle-vague-complete-soundtrack-jean-luc-godard>> best kris>>> PS Earthquake Orgy (Flaming Creatures) on the Tony Conrad / Jack Smith> CD is great.>>> On 4 Dec 2019, at 22:01, Adam Hyman <a...@lafilmforum.org> a...@lafilmforum.org>> wrote:>> Once upon a time there was a label called Table of the Elements.> (Their website is defunct)  They issued multiple CDs of wo

Greetings,
I don't know if this is on vinyl or CD, but Gunvor Nelson's film, "My Name
is Oona," has a sound track by Steve Reich.
Best regards,

Re: [Frameworks] Original soundtrack recordings of Avant-Garde films

2019-12-04 Thread John Matturri
Have three of the top ones, from Tony Conrad's label, and a couple of the
others. The Jack Smith recordings were done in Tony's Ludlow Street
apartment, which which was a hotbed of activity during the mid-sixties.
Especially notable after John Cale, feeling the heat move in because of his
work for Lamonte Young's thriving drug business, moved in with fellow
Lamonte band member Conrad, met Lou Reed and formed The Primitives, the
precursor of the Velvet Underground. Tony found the cheap VU paperback on
the street and Angus Maclaise, living in the same building, as the first
drummer, until their first gig, when he refused to do it because the pay
violated his anarchist principles. Luckily someone knew someone whose
sister was a girl drummer...

A few years ago I was talking to my friend Jeff Perkins (himself a former
roommate of Yoko, who herself also was a paramour of Lamonte) and mentioned
the influence on me of a Lamonte Young concert, with Cale and Conrad, in a
little theater on 3rd Ave. His remark was So you were the other guy in the
audience. I knew, from being sidled up to, that at least Allen Ginsberg was
also present, do I went to the Internet and found that there were 3 such
concerts on 64, precisely before Cale moved into Ludlow. I had been to
other avant garde events but for me this was the start of the sixties.

I remember suavely mentioning to the niece twins that I knew a couple of
musicians who were involved with the Velvets, not mentioning that they
(Conrad and Henry Flynt) were Among the geekiest of Harvard math geeks.

Once upon a time there was a label called Table of the Elements. (Their
website is defunct) They issued multiple CDs of works by Tony Conrad and
Jack Smith. Mostly audio only things, but perhaps among them was a
soundtrack or two to a film of one or the other?Š

Actually, it looks like probably not, but some interesting things

Hello,

I'm researching soundtracks of Avant-Garde films that have been published on
Vinyl, cassette or CD. It is not easy to find many cases because generally the
soundtracks are not original.

Does anyone know other cases besides those mentioned here?
