Re: [Frameworks] Hi-8 deck/repair

2012-10-03 Thread Rajesh Barnabas
On a related note, any clues on getting a tape out of an old hi-8 camcorder
without taking it apart? The thing went kaput on me. Still has power, just
the gate won't release tape. I bought another on Craigslist and is working
great, but still have tape stuck in the old one. Thanks ahead of time...

2012-10-03 Thread David Tetzlaff
Be careful of the Digital-8 camcorders. I never knew anyone who had a digital
camcorder who didn't have a broken digital 8 camcorder. If Jeff says they give
good results when working, I absolutely take his word for it. But caveat emptor
when buying a used one, and don't pay too much.

A lot of High-8 camcorders and decks were much better made, but at this late
date, the capacitors on anything can be pooped out. So you wouldn't want to buy
anything that's been sitting in storage without giving it a good use test
first. On any of the better-made units, the transport should be OK if it hasn't
been abused, so tape-eating isn't the most likely problem. Just whether it
works at all, and has a clean video out.

I'm assuming Tony's comment translates as "with old tech it can be easier and
cheaper to just buy something, rather than hunt down and pay for a rental,"
which is often true in my experience as well. Helps to know what you're looking
for, but I think Steven's been around the block enough to navigate the
territory.

I would call a place like DCTV (Downtown Community Television) or MNN
(Manhattan Neighborhood Network) and see whether they have any hi-8 decks
still in use.

Better solution: buy a Digital-8 camcorder (has to be a higher model number)
that can play back 8mm and Hi-8 tapes via FireWire. These apparently give
better results than any analog decks, according to tests by Wilson Chao, who
had to do this for some broadcast stuff a while back.

Re: [Frameworks] Hi-8 deck/repair

2012-10-03 Thread Flick Harrison
Best best is a new deck. Digital 8 decks and cams are newer and easier to
find, and will work with 8 and Hi8 (8 works in hi8 decks but not nec.
vice-versa). Your local video art co-op or whatever should have cheap access
to some sort of video8 gear.

Look inside the tape door with a flashlight, could be as simple as loose object
like a paperclip, part of a tape package fell in there . Blow some compressed
air into the camera tape mechanism. Carefully, just to see if hair or dust is
jamming it.

Also shake the camera a bit to see if anything's loose.

You could run a cleaning cassette for a few seconds as well.

All this is a bit wishful.

If you think you got something out of all that, test with a non-important tape.

Most likely camera needs pro repair.

You could maybe try holding the little switch on the side of the tape, open the
top of the cassette, stick a pencil into the gears and wind the tape forward a
bit to get away from the chewed up bit. I think there's also another switch you
have to hold in the centre of one face of the cassette to release the lock.
Hard to explain but google might turn up some instructions. You can later try
capturing that bit once you have a known-good deck.

If you cant turn the gears it might be a tape problem. Chewing up multiple
tapes though suggests a bad deck.
